Dear friends,
I just decided to quickly drop by to let you know that the reports out of Novorussia are nothing short of incredible. Okay, this is not, repeat, *NOT* confirmed, but sources are reporting that Novorussian forces have bypassed Mariupol from the north and have entered the Zaporozhie region! I find this hard to believe, but some sources indicate that there is an offensive on Berdiansk. If true, this is almost scary as this means a very long flank opening to a Ukie counterattack from the North. There have been reports over the past few days that the Ukies are fleeing Mariupol, but I still would be very careful. The Ukies in the first southern cauldron came very close to breaking out through the north and I just hope that no Ukie force is considered finished until it is really, truly, finished.
Still, the speed at which the Ukies are retreating might (not sure!!) that they have reached their breaking point. If so, then this conflict is coming to some kind of a new phase.
Another thing which really made my day is the news that Putin told Poroshenko and Co. “we are not a party to this war – talk to the Novorussians”. Beautiful and perfectly timed!
We should know more by tomorrow morning.
In the meantime – keep open threading!
Cheers,
The Saker

Could someone here explain the strategic importance of the Azov Sea to the the Novorussians?
.
That is pretty obvious. NAF can be easily supplied by Russia from the sea. And perhaps by shelling Kiev forces by the Russian navy, without a full scale invasion.

Happy Days if that’s true mate.
Let’s hope so.
As for a fourth mobilisation – surely that will just push a place like Transcarpathia soon enough into open revolt – particularly if the Novorussians start advancing in the South & East.
They would certainly want to join the “winning side” as early as possible wouldn’t they?
Do people think a relatively unified Ukraine would still exist or that it could split into perhaps as many as 4 different regions that go their separate ways.
Transcarpathia ends up with a partition between Hungary/ Slovakia
Crimea goes to Russia
Novorossiya goes Independent or to Russia
The rump of NW Ukraine becomes a kind of Polish protectorate full of raging seething Nazis?
This might be one of the reasons for the recently imporoved strength of the Novorussians:

It is otherwise a pro-EU presstitute outlet, but sometimes tidbits like this one are interesting. Nice to see that Serbs still know where they come from.
Oh and this one really rocks:

The junta Transcarpathian unit who decided to quit killing for the ZPC/NWO:

“Through one of the checkpoints on the Orekhovskaya track yesterday tried to break through about 400 soldiers of the Ukrainian army. According to Deputy regional military Commissar Mikhail Logvinov, they were soldiers of the 5th battalion of the territorial defence…”
The translation is confusing, but there was some other unit that objected to the unit leaving. It appears it was eventually worked out and the unit was allowed to continue home. From the sound of this, it appears that the ZPC/NWO central command is losing their ability to enforce their orders to the troops. This unit’s pulling out could influence other junta units to call it quits. Hope so.

Orban – one of the true leaders in Europe. He is perhaps the man who can lead Europe onto a path of sanity.
The first thing he needs to do is talk to the likes of Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic for a start and get them to all immediately resign from NATO.
There will be a perfect pretext for a mass resignation from NATO next week when the US/UK/Fogh of War/ Polish warmongers pontificate and issue threats from the safety of a Welsh resort.
This is the perfect time for any sensible countries – and I could add the likes of Germany, France, Italy, Spain & Portugal could surely be persuaded NATO has also outlived its usefulness.
If the likes of US/UK/Poland and the Baltic States won’t to stay in NATO and isolate themselves from the world community – let them.

@American Kulak @Grieved @Anonymous: Taking the south sounds reasonable, remembering that back in March Kherson, Nikolaev and Odessa wanted to join with Crimea (Strategic Culture Foundation) and recently (Aug. 4) a rally was held in Kherson – Odarchenko asked the Council of National Security of Ukraine to invoke martial law, stating that Russian tactics for destabilization of the situation in Kherson had changed (Ukrinform). Yesterday, Odarchenko took it upon himself to attempt to assuage military wives and Maidan activists by calling the participation of the Kherson battalion in the war zone a ‘crime’ and saying they had to be sent back.
Ukrinform yesterday reported reconnaissance in the C.Chaban area of the Kherson region by three Russian helicopters.
@John97205. If you look at Itar-Tass, Khadjimba has said what he is interested in: building up tourism in the off-season,developing the beautiful mountain area, seeing that a Caucasian highway gets finished, improving the rail, getting investors for those and other projects – which doesn’t sound like someone concerned with sending money his country doesn’t have out of the country. But could Kadyrov make use of a sea route?

*Americans engage in these kinds of propaganda exaggerations routinely and have done so throughout their history. After the onflict is over, they only rarely go back and correct the exaggerations and these remain historical “facts” for Americans. Example, one among many, the Americans “shot down” over Korea more MiG-15’s than there were MiG-15s in that war.

Saker’s puzzlement over the claim of a Russian incursion is more than justified. The Foreign Policy press organ is most ambiguous even two days later: it talks of “NATO’s response to Russia’s latest incursion into Ukrainian territory”. but it goes on to say “Russian tanks, troops, and artillery reportedly crossed into a previously unbreached border of eastern Ukraine on Tuesday, Aug. 26, opening a third front near the city of Novoazovsk and leading Ukrainian forces into a chaotic retreat”. If it was the latest of a number, how can it be just something that reportedly took place?? FP also insinuates that it was not the first time (“latest” “previously unbreached”: this is the corning-the-goose technique at work…). One wonders what the chaotic reptreat was really owing to. The “reported” crossing opened “a third front”. So the upshot of ther article is the Russians are in there and fighting. If you have the stomach for it, the FP story is here:

Because if we don’t root all of it out, we won’t be able to stop any of this, anywhere.
It looks to me like the Ukraine gambit was not just to smack Russia upside the head for Syria, but to grab her warm-water port in Sevastopol while building up IS to grab her other one in Syria. Which effort is ongoing, and Biden, Boehner et. al. are certainly behind it. If we want to stop all of this, we have to root ALL of them out. Because they’re all in it together, and ultimately it’s not a matter of liking them or not, it’s just judging them on the Evil they do, getting them out of the positions where they have the power to do it, and replacing them with people with the principles not to.

“KIEV, August 28. /ITAR-TASS/. CyberBerkut anonymous hacker group released a new portion of the Ukrainian army’s hacked data on Thursday, showing large losses inflicted by east Ukraine militias on pro-Kiev troops.
Over the week of August 16-23 alone, self-defense fighters of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics seized 14 T-64 tanks, 25 infantry fighting vehicles, 18 armored personnel carriers, one armored reconnaissance and patrol vehicle, one Uragan multiple launch rocket system, two Gvozdika self-propelled artillery guns, four D-30 howitzers, four mortars, one ZU-23-2 air defense system and 33 vehicles, according to the hackers’ data.
“Therefore, our estimates alone show that the defenders of the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics seized 79 T-64 tanks, 94 infantry fighting vehicles, 57 armored personnel carriers and 24 Grad multiple launch rocket from June 20 to August 23 during the Ukrainian military’s punitive operation,” hackers said.” Now they haven’t confirmed it yet, but still…

Today should be pretty funny. Now that the NAF is winning, Pig Poroshenko is attempting to play the ‘Russian invasion’ card for real at the UNSC. Fortunately Andersen’s emperor’s new clothes ends with the procession carrying on.
A day after her Kiev visit, Mrs Merkel told German ARD television:
“There can only be a political solution. There won’t be a military solution to this conflict”
I’m not so sure about that, but then she added this interesting statement…
…if Ukraine opted to rejoin the Eurasian Union with Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia, then Europe would not make “a huge conflict” out of it.
I’m sure it wouldn’t, LOL.
One can assume her proposal was broached privately some time ago. Taken together, they indicate the EU is desperate to wash their hands of this mess, and not fully aware of what’s transpiring on the ground. More importantly, they form the context for the militia’s sudden reversal of fortune, and the breakneck speed at which its operations are expanding.
That context makes it critical that the new NAF maximize the facts on the ground before the start of the coming political negotiations. If the gains can be consolidated, Strelkov’s dream of a strategically important and economically viable Greater Novorossyia can be nursed back to health and into the Eurasian Union, while the EU gets left with a dysfunctional Banderistan stuck to its shoe.

Before end of September the EU needs urgent acceptance of the inevitable or the face utter disintegration of Kiev. I still think Poroshenko will be lucky to be living in Israel by the end of September. They’re storming his palace right now. For all the wrong reasons, of course, but he’s in a bit of a bind, now isn’t he.
Dear All,
Allow me to place some issues in perspective.
In the history of the Jewish people, always, their leaders used their correligionists as a bargain chip. This is a long and dark story which perhaps someone will be able to gather the pertinent info and expose it.
They were lead to the gas chambers by their rabbis with the indecent claim that it was an offer to God, lead to wars which they were bullied to take as their own in Israel. But the facts spell it clear out for anyone to see. Kolomoisky, yatnesiuk, poroshenko, and their criminal ilk, are nothing but continuators of a very present long tradition.
To make things worse, most Jews as most peoples on Earth adore authority, even and specially when authoritarian or even coercive, but as long as some crumbs are distributed, unfortunately, most people will consent to this relation and participate somewhat.
This sounds cynical. Indeed, they are the fruits of a long and rich life experience. It is what it is.
When people like Strelkov, Mogzovoi, Motorola, Gubarev and simple folk of Novorossyia come to the fore and manifest themselves by their deeds, then the sun illuminates the very fact that we are children of a cosmos, which lies as much inside ourselves as inside, there we see that there ie little difference between the two.
Cheers,
Patagonian
@Martijn That’s something improvised. I’d not feel very safe inside such a thing when the bullets started flying.
They have another improvised thing, a troop bus based upon an old vehicle that, because of its shape is called The Loaf. Looks almost like a VW camper van with some kind of wire mesh over its wheels and the glass of its windows covered in metal sheets and all painted green. I doubt it’d protect against a forceful spit let alone bullets.
Problem is that nobody ever died in the A Team shows. The bullets and bombs are for real in Ukraine. :(
Slavery = Liberty (refer to the statue of liberty) – how many blacks were put into slavery in the U.S.? oh let’s not talk about the Indians that were slaughtered and thrown into the reservation camps.

Kill ’em all and let God sort them out !
Dear All,
I forgot to mention the obvious mechanism, as behaviourism would put it, for the Jewish leaders to lure the people to commit suicide and go to war. It is, as always is, fear, the selling of exclusivism and very seasoned with mistification. These are, unfortunately, not exclusive to jews. The Other is presented as subqualified and real life conditions are somewhat produced at times, to set the basis for further action.

All sides want to hide how many killed. Will come out when its over. Sure many more junta soilders killed as they are the ones invading and the rebels can easily ambush them. Imagine this the might of the American military machine could not defeat the Vietnames, Afghans, Al Quada in Iraq, etc…American has not won a war since WWII (which Soviets really won). So there is no way in hell that the rag tag army of Kiev can defeat a popular rebellion.
a conventional army, no matter how good, cannot fight a determined guerilla army. Seen that over and over since 1945. That’s something that pisses me off too. The South should have feigned defeat and entrapped the Yankees in a guerilla war and the same with Germany in 1945. F*ck all this honor on the battlefield s*it. The idea is to win!
The only way they can win would be to totally flatten the place like Russia did in Chechnya and break the will of the resistance. To do that Kiev would need NATO. Sure NATO won’t risk full scale war with Russia over this. They may want to prolong the war for reasons of war profiteering (arms manufacturers) but wouldn’t want a real world war.

Nora: Your idea of a lottery is perfect. Actually, with technology, we can (in effect) represent ourselves. Which is the way God intended B-T-W. The comments (and voices) on this blog-site and others are much more powerful than what we have in DC. Don’t know about you — but I stopped listening to them ages ago. If it comes out of DC (SOS) or MSM (also SOS) I literally and figuratively turn it off and state the Truth in contrast to their lies. The act of speaking Truth to lies is more than simply some “get-off” moment. It puts Truth into consciousness — which has HUGE impact. And that’s what we’re doing here.
To umbeddu citadels: Salam back to you my friend… “first we will come out with our sanity and pride intact”. The most important element of Truth is SANITY. Having a healthy mind requires a moral basis. Evil is always insanity. Fear is also insanity. When we take a moral stand we are dwelling in sanity.
The “pride-thing” is not as much of an issue for me. Americans have been largely “proud” of an illusion. I’d rather be sane than proud any day.
Finally — folks here are too concerned about what the US is doing — or will do — in any of these situations. To quote a rather good writer “All was confusion in the house of Oblonski”. The USG(SOS)is too busy looking in the mirror, seeing its fading beauty and youth wasted on zog triviality — hoping for some handsome distraction to heal the emptiness inside. USGs about to throw herself in front of that oncoming train — aka Building-7 and world opinion — hurdling down the tracks. (To my Russian friends — not every American you meet is totally ignorant of your great literature — I refer to it constantly in my descriptions — even in business — although few of my audience “get” the metaphor or literary allusion — but at least I put it out there…sigh).
Nora — don’t fret too much about the political process. I have little faith in any human or politician to save us. Even Ron Paul — as much as I admire him. Each of us is perfectly capable of “saving” ourselves. In that sense it doesn’t much matter who’s “in charge”. None of them are really. Don’t be limited by what the ballot-box says. We have the world at our fingertips. We can follow (read, ingest, dwell) any leaders or thinkers we choose. Americans never liked following “leaders” anyway. Frankly — our DNA was self-selected as driven-risk-takers. So, I’m perfectly happy with a Congress that’s feckless. Wouldn’t have it any other way.
I’m so grateful for the unfolding good in Novorussia. Wow. Those people deserve a break. For. Sure.

The Washington toadies are publishing their usual full spectrum of negative propaganda towards the Russian Federation (see: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/us-says-russian-denials-over-ukraine-absurd-2014-08-28?cb=logged0.3230708325777001 ).
The Eastern Ukraine pro-Russian separatists are brave, cunning and no how to defeat the fascists in Kiev. Little by little they will achieve their objective.
Fwd from Canuckistan:
Just a quick update. Based upon the rapid updates to the CBC propaganda piece of the day, Kiev and NATO are hell bent on ratcheting up the war-mongering and fear factor. Whatever their “plans” are, they seem to be hard selling their version of events.
On another note, the EU is now threatening to scrap the Canada/EU trade deal due to it being an “affront to democracy” in their own words.
Sorry for not providing links at the moment due to device limitations but hopefully someone can help with that since this is a rather fast moving and very fluid situation…
In Lviv, they are still running collections for funding the military. They have also pinned up lists of the names of the dead from Lviv alone.
The Novorussia army has been scanning the documents of the Ukrainian dead. This website has links –
“Thousands of passports, military tickets, tender letters to loved ones. Personal Affairs, dry reports of the commanders and naive children’s drawings from home. Soldier notebooks and unsent letters… Poroshenko, you bloody pig. You should be put to death on maganoy tree themselves protrusive Ukrainians. … Some almost children… Not to forget, ctco many of them were called back in April, believing that they caused a 10-day duties…”
Something that has been asked persistently – why is so quiet outside Donbas and why are there not more volunteers?
This article may provide clues, albeit in a slightly cryptic manner. It covers a discussion between the narrator and two others, one a Ukrainian native to the Black Sea and the other a Chechen born in the USSR.
The first is working on the formation of a brigade in the South covering the Mykolaiv, Odessa and Kherson region. The second commands one division of the emerging brigade. The members are mostly local resident, with some international volunteers, many of them high quality professionals. Their main aim is to prevent a repetition of “the nightmare that is happening in the Donbass. Protecting the local population from fascist bastards”.
They are looking into dealing with the 299th air brigade based at Kulbakino base ~100 km east of Odessa. This appears to have been the base for Su-25 aircraft used in the south-east.
Maybe the plan was for the south east to be used to train the core of an army and to drain the Ukraine military. In the meanwhile, other areas would be quietly building up forces capable of continuing against a much degraded Ukrainian military.
The DPR and LPR will be the first Popular Republics ……. but more will come.
It’s a shame thay had to suffer so much, thanks to the USA and the EU have had to pay such a high price, but will not have been in vain because they expected a better and brighter future.
It´s give some envy, because they finally are removed from “the caste” above.

With regard to Putin’s estimates of money to bring Ukraine into a place where they were able to operate in the EU marketspace – that is not anything to do with rebuilding destroyed infrastructure.
The reason that Yanukovych pushed the EU deal aside was because he saw the same numbers as the junta saw and the junta tried to withdraw from the EU agreement as well! It did not d hem much good though.
The money refers to the costs of bringing Ukrainian business and legal systems into line with the EU. Stuff like moving quality standards from the GOST system used in the Russian Federation and the near abroad. This is all sorts of technical standards in many different fields. But there is not just a single EU standard, for example in steel production there’s at least German, British Italian and French – bear in mind that up until now most steel went in one direction – eastward.
Ukraine can not afford these costs, but the Association Agreement was not designed to produce an equitable playing field, its purpose was to open the Ukraine market up to an asset strip by EU and US firms – doubt me? Read the agreement, I have!
Now, of course the costs of association will be much, much higher and again nobody to pay them.
Russia still does not want Ukraine. My best guess is that they are seeking to create a land link between Transniestria running eastward across the top of the Crimean peninsula and toward the Donbass region. This was the region offered to Akhmetov as his kingdom recently.
Transiestria is a poverty stricken land locked area that depends upon Russia but with a recalcitrant Ukraine is being suffocated. I was there only once and I can tell you that any place that makes Moldova look well off is not in a good situation. They need some form of land bridge to the ‘world’.
I reckon that Moscow will settle for the cost of such a territory for the strategic benefits it offers and with the hope that the manufacturing centres in the east can be revitalised and subsidise the cost of the venture. What happens to Ukraine in such a scenario is anyone’s guess but I can imagine a retreat to a standard of living similar to Moldova’s where much of the rural economy is essentially cash free.
Of course, all this presupposes that the rebels can maintain their gains, finish off their job and defend the new frontier which will be a long one with a very narrow hinterland, easily split up by attackers.
Yes technology does provide a means of allowing direct democracy and completely dispensing with professional politicians now:

Ukraine crisis: Canada’s jets edge closer to Russian airspace
The Canadian Press Posted: Aug 28, 2014 3:19 PM ET Last Updated: Aug 28, 2014 3:19 PM ET

Canadian fighter jets will be patrolling the edge of Russian airspace next week as part of NATO’s response to the unravelling situation in Ukraine.
At least four of the six CF-18s sent overseas by the Harper government earlier this year have arrived at Siauliai Air Base in Lithuania, where they will fly air policing missions over the Baltic states.
The formal handover of responsibility is expected to take place early next week.
The Canadian jets will be working alongside fighters from Portugal, Germany and Belgium, which will be carrying out flights from bases in another Baltic state.
The missions are meant to reassure European allies unnerved by Russia’s seizure of the Crimean Peninsula, as well as the military action currently unfolding in eastern Ukraine.
The jets, which had been based in Romania on a training exercise, are tasked with defending Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian airspace because those countries are unable to do so on their own.
The deployment comes against the unfolding backdrop of heavy fighting and an apparent Russian invasion, and brings Canadian fighters as close to Russian territory as they’ve been since the crisis began.
Ukraine claims Russian incursion
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called an urgent session of the national security council on Thursday after two columns of Russian tanks reportedly entered the country’s southeast earlier in the day.
“Destabilization of the situation and panic, this is as much of a weapon of the enemy as tanks,” Poroshenko told the security council, according to the Interfax news agency.
Russia’s latest escalation is an outrage that will have repercussions, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said as he called on President Vladimir Putin’s regime to halt its apparent invasion, as well as the flow of arms to separatists.
The Harper government will review what further sanctions and other measures can be taken, Baird said, but he stopped short of specifics about what sort of response could be expected.
Last spring, Prime Minister Stephen Harper described the annexation of Crimea as a “slow-motion invasion” of Ukraine. Baird said the events of the last few days indicate the Russians have accelerated their efforts.
“This is absolutely unacceptable, irresponsible and absolutely reckless,” he said in a conference call from Zagreb, Croatia.
“It is also deeply and shamelessly dishonest. While Russian President Putin talked about ceasefires with President (Petro) Poroshenko in Minsk, his military was busy fighting on Ukrainian soil.”

AGS,
I do fret. I can’t help it. But I really do see things differently here, profoundly spiritually but coming from a very different place — Injun values I guess. What keeps going through my head is, “To those whom much is given, much is expected.” Through what I know was simply the luck of the draw — certainly nothing I did — I grew up having a lot. And one of the best gifts my father ever gave me was his conviction that one passes it along, gives back, helps level the playing field so that others at least have the same chance to become equally fortunate — or at the very least, make sure that no one suffers or goes without. But chiefs were expected to give away whatever they had if that was needed to ensure everyone else was ok. So it’s kind of a melding of both cultures, I guess — bc we’re sure talking the OT prophets as well as the Two Great Commandments, and I see rendering unto Caesar as a bit of an instruction to follow The Words In Red with an eye to doing what I can to make this world a better place now, rather than just hoping to end up in one myself later.
I certainly have no faith in any politician — no more believe in the Great Man Will Save Us kind of stuff than you do: actually, now that I think of it, that’s really quite un-American, isn’t it. But to me — and this is deeply personal, I guess — I save myself best by helping those in need and trying to make this a country where everyone can have the kinds of opportunities I did. The playing field is certainly not level but it can be made so; right now it’s quite deliberately tilted and that’s just plain wrong. And when we persist in doing to others elsewhere what we’ve done since day one to people of color here, yeah, I’m gonna fight it.
But I’m really curious as to your choice of the word “feckless” for Congress; I think I might have used a few others… ;~)

NATO tracks Russian troops
NATO estimates that as many as 1,000 Russian troops are fighting inside Ukraine with an additional 20,000 clustered on the border as support — or reinforcements.
“Over the past two weeks we have noted a significant escalation in both the level and sophistication of Russia’s military interference in Ukraine,” said Dutch Brig.-Gen. Nico Tak.
“We have also detected large quantities of advanced weapons, including air defence systems, artillery, tanks, and armoured personnel carriers being transferred to separatist forces in Eastern Ukraine.”
The military alliance also released a series of satellite images supporting its claim.
Major U.S. banks, meanwhile, reported they were the target of a massive cyberattack that defence officials suggested may have originated in Russia.
Defence analysts expressed little surprise at that revelation, noting Russia’s military strategy involves the use of cyberwarfare to disrupt and cripple adversaries.
Baird called the recent events a “significant provocation” in advance of next week’s NATO summit in Wales, where the alliance’s leaders are expected to hold a special meeting with Poroshenko.
Asked to characterize the latest developments, Baird described Russia’s move as an “incursion” and an “invasion,” but stopped of short declaring it an act of war.
Ukraine is not a member of NATO, unlike other eastern European nations; the alliance is not automatically obliged to come to its defence.

“Why can,t the Novorussian forces take back Donetsk airport? I would have thought that would have been relatively simple.”
Assaulting when you have the choice to outflank and encircle is just killing your own men for no reason.

“Strelkov in this sense is repeating Chutkov and Zhukov’s strategy at Stalingrad — wait until the enemy is at his most exhausted point then spring the trap and close the pincers.”
Yes, very impressive so far, fingers crossed.

“Of course we have the longer running, even simpler, comparison of chess (Russia) vs checkers (US).
I admit that I used to think in those terms. That’s not hard when you have, seemingly, buffoons like Nuland, Kerry, Psaki, Samantha Powers and so on.
What’s convinced me otherwise is that, regardless of the ostensible players, Republicans or Democrats, buffoons or “realists”, gravitas or cheap sentimentality, rain or sunshine, the game goes on.”
The neocons are buffoons but they’re psychopathic buffoons which is why you’re right that they won’t ever stop.
Permanent peace can only come from foreign policy regime change in the USA i.e. the American people realizing that letting neocons run US foreign policy will get the whole world blown up.
Saker
You wrote “… Novorussian forces have bypassed Mariupol from the north and have entered the Zaporozhie region …”
Put it a bit different and it makes much more sense. I would write:
“… rebel activity, likely carired out by partisan sleeper cells, are said to happen currently also in the north and west of Mariupol as far as n the Zaporozhie region blocking roads there …”
We have asked ourselves for long why we see so few partisan activity outside the range of territory under Novorussia control.
Well, here it is problably. I’ld say, not a bad choice to start partisan activity now at these places.

On militarymaps.info it looks like Kiev manages to draw together enough military to seriously trouble their opponents.
Things might get a lot tougher for them very soon. Mayb now the army people found a reason to fight, too.
Re: Anonymous 28 Aug 00:11
A brilliant post, with detailed and well argued analysis. May I request Saker to respond in detail to three key points raised in above-mentioned post:
(1) Assuming a Novorussian victory, Ukraine will likely split into two (perhaps 3). Had Putin moved in right when Crimea was accepted into RF, the outcome would have been the same – BUT much cleaner.
(2) The western Ukraine will be used in perpetuity by NATO to gnaw at the underbelly of Russia. NATO agents and troublemakers will keep slipping into and out of Novorussia and Russia. And NATO can use the west Ukrainians to drop a dirty bomb, or bombs, over Novorussia and Russia.
(3)And now Finland is also going to host a NATO missile base.
So, it seems, huge troubles and calamities still lie ahead. AND THIS WHY by acting proactively Russia could have mitigated (2) somewhat and risk (3) may not have even arisen. Festering wounds create lots of long term problems. Prompt, direct, and powerful action, justified by the simple but ethically sound political statement that Russia will not allow NATO to install a puppet govt next door and to kill civilians may have been a successful surgery.
Thanks in advance for comments.
–A happy but worried reader
Nora — I agree with you that we are caretakers of whatever human material “good” we are given. It’s a blessing to live without fear or want — but if based on others misery — it doesn’t really profit us much. Good leaders make sure their “people” don’t go hungry. So yes, it is an honor, privilege and responsibility to help others in need. Oblesse oblige was the best quality of the old school Patricians. Some were better at it than others.
I call Congress feckless because they are. Focused on reelections and raising money. Not on the tedious grind of governing. And certainly not governing by constitutional principles. Each and every one of them are bought by some “group” or another. Most are Israel-firsters — which means they’re traitors to America. They’re an embarrassment to thinking Americans.
I don’t mean to denigrate your concerns. We are all worried about the future. I believe life is changing here and it may not be for the better in a material sense. I see this as a good thing. Not because I’m some “rapture” crazy (I know — its unkind of me to call them out — but they give Christianity a bad name…) but because I know that God is just. And regardless — we must play the hand we are dealt.
“From 29 to 30 August in Yalta at the hotel “Yalta-Intourist” will be held the 2nd International Conference “Russia, Ukraine, New Russia: global issues and challenges.”
I wouldn’t post information like that online. It gives the enemy an eaay target.
I’m sorry , why do I care again that a bankrupt former Russian state is being reunited with Russia again ?
See I DON’T care …The Ukraine is on the other side of the planet and has absolutely nothing to do with the United States …
Want to know what will change for not only me but every other American if Russia takes over all of the Ukraine …..NOTHING …..
besides the Ukraine is better off under Russian administration anyways , their country was near collapse before this started and the EU was NOT going to help them ….
The only reason Europe even cares about the Ukraine now is because they are scared of Russia and want them around as a buffer state , but they don’t REALLY want to provide any aid to that nation ….And we Americans don’t want any of OUR money spent on them either ….
Mohamed,
;~) Glad to know I’m not the only one! Today, I apparently couldn’t type my name — I think it came out Na or something (?!?).
I’m still chewing on your hypothesis, btw. I don’t like the guy, I sure don’t trust him, but would be more than happy if he is actually thinking about the welfare of this country instead of himself. That would at least make him better than the Clintons or Dubya, who couldn’t think period.
Paul Cockshott,
But Liberalism and representative government since 1688 were never intended to become an Athenian democracy — in fact, people worked very hard on both sides of the lake precisely to ensure that that would never happen. Back in the Stone Ages when I was in school, we were explicitly taught this when we read the Federalist Papers and went over the Constitution line by line. So no, it wasn’t 18th or 18th century or even early-to-middle 20th century ruling classes that dunnit it — it was the Neoliberal takeover of our society that began in the middle-to-late 20th century. I know we were astounded to hear that word bandied about — and laughed our heads off at the idea of Bush et. al. “bringing democracy” to Iraq when we’ve never, ever, had anything like it here at home.
