Dear friends,
I just decided to quickly drop by to let you know that the reports out of Novorussia are nothing short of incredible. Okay, this is not, repeat, *NOT* confirmed, but sources are reporting that Novorussian forces have bypassed Mariupol from the north and have entered the Zaporozhie region! I find this hard to believe, but some sources indicate that there is an offensive on Berdiansk. If true, this is almost scary as this means a very long flank opening to a Ukie counterattack from the North. There have been reports over the past few days that the Ukies are fleeing Mariupol, but I still would be very careful. The Ukies in the first southern cauldron came very close to breaking out through the north and I just hope that no Ukie force is considered finished until it is really, truly, finished.
Still, the speed at which the Ukies are retreating might (not sure!!) that they have reached their breaking point. If so, then this conflict is coming to some kind of a new phase.
Another thing which really made my day is the news that Putin told Poroshenko and Co. “we are not a party to this war – talk to the Novorussians”. Beautiful and perfectly timed!
We should know more by tomorrow morning.
In the meantime – keep open threading!
Cheers,
The Saker

This guy can send reinforcements into Mariupol by sea
I am sure Putin tried to talk him out of that.
> Finland, another region Russia CANNOT allow to become a NATO first-strike base.
Wrong. NATO already has Baltic States for that, those states that not so far ago got “100% judas frei” seal that even Germany could not achieve.
Adding Finland to this list would be sad for Russia but would not make its conditions much worse. Afterall to destroy Russia and kill half of its population one only needs 1 ( one ) nuclear missile or an equal quantity of explosive properly deployed.
AGS,
Okay then, you do get where I’m coming from and we’re not that far apart. Yay! ;~) Except that I’d sooner call Congress venal bc ultimately most of them are very much in it for the money — and given that last vote, every last one of them is a traitor. We refuse to make another political donation unless we’ve got a written promise to support the Palestinian people. Period.
Oh I think things are going to get a lot worse here economically-speaking, and every other way as well. But while I’d LUV to see us lose our materialistic focus, we’ve also already lost any real sense of cohesiveness as Americans, citizens of our towns, communities, neighborhoods, etc. — the public polity. That bothers me as much as the foreign and domestic policies of our leaders and I see all of that as our responsibility to try to set straight. My representative doesn’t live in my town, my neighborhood: I do.
Otoh, I’ve got no problem whatever calling those rapture folks heretics — it’s *not* Christianity, they don’t even know The Words In Red, all they focus on is OT awfulness and then flying up out of their skivvies. And that’s in Scofield, not the Bible itself. So I don’t feel unkind at all — they’re claiming to be a part of my faith but they’re not, at all. It’s really not the same faith.
And God is just but he’s asking us to be just too — and the hand we’re now being dealt is, frankly, a rough one, a real challenge. But He set us here, now, and He’s asking us to do something to help His children. I do know that — I just don’t know what to do or how He wants us to do it.
But I figure, if we keep struggling, and praying, and asking for His help, it’ll emerge. Other people have been through so much worse, are right now, and He’s guided them, He hasn’t failed them. We’ve just got to find and follow His will — but that also means we’ve really got to start looking!
There seem to be some interesting parallels between the Moldova-Transnistria situation in the late eighties and early nineties, and the Western Ukraine–Eastern Ukraine situation in the spring of 2014. I am no expert but have just been reading the history of Transnistria at Wikipedia. Similar language and religious issues and degradation of the situ into violence, namely, the Moldovans sought to “romanize” the Slavic minorities of Transnistria amd formed violent militias, attacked orthodox members of the parliament, etc. Others surely know much more about this history than I. Here is the Wiki link:

Dear Worried,
In my opinion, you worry too much about the wrong things. NATO can already use terrorists or the Baltic states for various nefarious purposes. If and when the current Ukraine breaks into three or four pieces, the piece with Lvov will be anti-Russia. OK, that’s why Russia will want some kind of international deal to recognize new borders and make all the new countries neutral. Lvov won’t really be neutral, just as Novorossiya won’t be. But it will keep NATO out. If the EU prefers to keep things in an undecided state, they will pay a price. You don’t really expect to send gas through Transcarpathia and not recognize them, do you?
And you are missing one of the biggest points of all. If Russia had invaded early on, a fairly high percentage of the residents of The Area Formerly Known as Ukraine would have been upset. TAFKU has now seen pogroms and missiles targeting schools and factories.
omg what a brilliant in depth look at what’s going down in the Ukraine. The log on the many battles gave me flash backs to Viet Nam. Battles everyfuckingwhere during the Tet Offensive.
Some brilliant comments, comprehensive coherent ~ i’m glad there’s at least this many with some interest in the current raging war. i’m getting a good education. OBTW the logo is a Gyrfalcon ~ gray morph ~ so many morphs ~ pretty bird.
