It appears that Francois Holland, aka “soft testicle” (nickname given to him by Martine Aubry, First Secretary of the Socialist Party of France), has outdone even Tony Blair as the US’s most docile poodle in Europe. After resisting US pressure for a long time and being fined billions of dollars for doing so, he has suddenly decided to cave in and suspend the delivery of the French Mistrals to Russia. However, not will the US will not return to 9 billion dollars extorted out of Paribas, now the Russian can impose astronomical penalties on France for breach of contract. Double whammy for Hollande!
Now I suspect that this is a measure which will last exactly as long as the upcoming NATO summit and that as soon it is over the “circumstances for delivery” will magically become “right again”. As for Russia – no worries. She will either get the ships or get a huge load of money. A win-win situation for sure
But that is hardly the point.
First, whether Russia really needs these French ships is an extremely controversial issue in Russia, especially in the military. I did not take a poll, but my guess is that most of the military don’t want them and rather spend the money elsewhere. This was a Medvedev purchase which was far from having a unanimity behind it. Personally, I think that the Mistrals are very good ships, very versatile, and that Russia could use on in the Black Sea and one in the Far East. They also come at at time with the Russian shipbuilding industry is over-worked and does not have the capacity to fulfill all the orders of the Russian Navy. Finally, the Mistrals come with an advanced communication and command infrastructure which the Russian would like to get their hands one. But I have always had a weak spot for French weapon systems and nobody asked me my opinion anyway. Besides, there are cheaper way for Russian to get that kind of capabilities or systems.
I think that the real importance of the Mistral contact was to show Russia, France and the rest of the world that the two countries could work together, even on huge contracts, that France is a credibly supplier and that the Russian and French military industrial complexes can cooperate.
Now the French look like total whips and idiots.
That is really unfair. The French deserve a great deal of credit for doing everything just right, sining such a complex agreement is no small task, and for designing a superb ship. Now all this is compromised by Francois “soft testicle” Hollande who clearly has the vision, courage, intelligence and leadership qualities of a blue-green algae.
I bet you the ships will be delivered more or less on time. But a terrible blow has been dealt to one of values the French hold extremely dear: the independence of their country from all other big powers. If the British are more or less resigned to their role as janitor for Uncle Sam, the French will not accept this and I expect the hatred for the current regime to become even more virulent than it is today. I tend to agree with French economist Pierre Jovanovic when he predicts that “King Francois” (another of his nicknames) will never finish his term in office.

The Ukies have been using some very old ammunition. This video shows an enormous captured ammunition dump with material varying in age from new to so old that the metal parts are corroded and the wooden packing crates have started to rot.
Can anyone confirm that those appearing in the video below really are:
Commanders of Azov, Aidar, and Dnepr
and they really say this stuff:?
– They believe there is a movement to eradicate the volunteer battalions.
– They are upset leadership and oligarchs that they believe started this war have not changed and are still in power.
– They said they are fighting with many guys they used to serve with and would like an answer why they are made to be killing each other.
– They are largely of the opinion this war has been manufactured by those in power in Ukraine.
– They say it’s wrong that if they go to European Union, Russia is their enemy. If they go to Russia, European Union is their enemy. He says that maybe both are our friends instead? Why treat either one as enemies?
– He says if European Union is not helping them, why are they wanting to go there?
– Interestingly, a captain from Donbas Battalion interjected and says he somewhat disagrees with the guys in that their battalion’s position is that they want Ukraine to be part of EU and NATO.
– They say that both sides (separatists and them), instead of killing each other on an open field and having the winner march on Kiev, should perhaps march on Kiev together.

Having Nukes doesn’t make one “Super Power”.
Obama is in cahoots with Putin to make Russia a “Super Power”. Still there is lots of work remains, such as:
01. Building of massive ships by Russia. They don’t have the technology.
02. Building of massive civilian aircraft by Russia. They don’t have the technology like Boeing and Airbus.
03. Building of automobile, which can compete with the best.

05. An alternative currency to the hegemony of USD ($).
06. A rival to IMF and World Bank.
07. Having countries in UN, who support Russia with guts, not just by abstaining.

11. Getting rid of Iran sanctions.

“The empire has oodles of being smart [and can easily buy any they don’t have]”
Not only doesn’t have oodles but increasing can’t even negotiate with smart – smart is icreasingly not for sale – every act of the empire accelerating/widening that trend.
Bloomberg covers the news of a possible ceasefire and of course examines the immediate economic implications of this news.

European stocks rose and the ruble rebounded, while U.S. Treasuries and the dollar declined. The Russian currency strengthened the most since April against the dollar, while the Micex stock index jumped 2.9 percent in Moscow, its biggest gain in three months. The Ukrainian Equities Index climbed 3.3 percent and Ukraine’s 2017 Eurobond rose for the first time in 11 days, pushing the yield 91 basis points lower to 12.637 percent.
So, in a nutshell we get confirmation of who benefits and who loses when the ugly spectre of peace looms over Europe.

The deal (once given to Sarkozy for his help in the 2008 Georgia conflict) included several ships some of them to be build in Russia. As part of the deal a shipyard in Russia has been modernized for the project and that important work has been finished. Russia can now (again) build such ships on its own.
Also, please ask the Pentagon about the R180 engines being supplied by Russia. Why is it these engines are exempted from U.S. sanctions? and without them national security satellites would be grounded.

Thanks Ann, for the video. It is very touching. When I see so Vladimir Vladimirovich brokes my heart. This person must be very lonely, someone should give him a big hug from time to time. He deserves it. With all that has worked and is working for his country (not really rests), watching how they try to destroy everything back, sometime is easy to get carried away by emotion. At the same time, this indicates that it is a normal, sensitive person. While being sensitive does not mean one is weak, I speak from experience. One can get moved to hear a song and then have an unshakeable determination, as I think is his case.
Besides the anthem of the Russian Federation is a very moving song, it moves even to me. After all, with all his faults that was a day the nation of workers.

Financial war. Forbe’s outlines the West’s wet dream:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/paulroderickgregory/2014/08/28/western-sanctions-and-rising-debts-are-already-strangling-the-russian-economy/
USA’s aim? Russia’s capital market is too small. Half has been coming from abroad over the last few years, Russia will turn first to China, but success is not guaranteed. There are debts which are falling due.
Stabilising the rouble is a problem. Investments may dry up. Russia will have to dig into her currency and other rainy day reserves.
Fewer credit lines are available ($1.5 bn loan deals signed since the Ukie war began). BLOOMBERG wrote not a cent was lent to Russian companies in July (that was on 3 August). Debt servicing in the meantime gets more expensive. STANDARD & POOR’S obligngly put Russia’s debt at one step higher than junk. The Russian Finance Mnistry has suspended planned bond issue auctions. Thirty billion in debts coming due over the next couple of years. Russia has currency reserves for $ 468 bn and the Finance Ministry has reserves of 173 bn, but the bet is that Russia will have to reduce her currency reserves by 22%. The US does not believe the BRICS countries will provide a lifeline.

Capital flight? On this Putin appears to be impotent. Russia’s central bank says “only” 51 bn left the country in the first quarter of 2014 (ie in a year 100 bn). Is the central bank coming clean? The European Central Bank claims the capital flight for the first quarter came to 221 bn. So, expect drastic administrative measures against llegal capital transfers abroad Experience in the west says such measures are ineffective.
The Russians trust only SBERBANK (savings bank). So SBERBANK has been targeted by sanctions. The central bank has raised interest on deposits to 10.2%. Will that be enough to keep capital in Russia?
Washington is certain Putin won’t be able to maintain current levels of investment even if he manages to re-finance the debt. Direct foreign investment is down from $ 80 bn in 2013 to $ 41 bn this year. Westerners calculate a further 30-50% drop in 2014-2015. Westerners are hoping for a 6-10% fall in Russian GDP.
A brilliant comment from “swmnguy” on ZH today… should be directed to ALL Eastern Europe (not just the Baltic) particularly Ukraine:
” It’s amazing how long you Balts have lived next door to Empire, east and west of you, without having figured out a goddamned thing about how Empire works. You could have easily enough taken the Swiss approach, offering enough advantage to either Empire to leave you alone and let you be the middleman. But instead, you leaped to jump in bed with the US Empire, as represented by NATO, the EU, IMF, World Bank, etc. No wonder your economies are in the dumper, while your oligarchs get rich. And you’ve got a large neighbor, who should be familiar enough to you, all pissed off. Brilliant positioning, there. Have you no maps?
Your role in the US Empire is to shut up and wait for us to want something from you, like a vote in an international body or a few token soldiers in a “coalition of the subjected willing.” Otherwise we like your plywood and your dry shipping index is good for a short now and again. What else do you do? We can get herring and fruit jam from Canada if we really wanted more of that.
Seriously, do you guys expect us in the US to think of you as anything more than Putin’s Parking Lot? Your function is to serve as a speed bump between Moscow and, oh, let’s just say Berlin. We’ll trade you to Putin for a pipeline or an agreement to keep taking US Dollars, the second it become useful to us to make a deal like that.
You weren’t buying into our bullshit, were you? After our banking system reduced you to poverty? Not that it helped us individuals in the US any to do that. The looting of your economy propped up the German banks for a few weeks; a little aperitif on the way to Athens.
You guys sure are loud, though. That’s not going to help you in your assigned role. Empires get tired of yappy little dogs. Know who you are and don’t get into fights you can’t finish. We’re not going to help you unless it meets our needs, in which case what we give you isn’t going to be “help,” is it.
Or, just read your own history.”
iii
What about oil and gas? Half the State’s revenue come from oil and gas, vital for the entire economic and social fabric. And vital, Washington believes, for Putin’s own survival. So this is the real target. They would really like to do what they did to Gorbachev’s Russia and bring down energy prices very rapidly. This time round, that’s a tough nut to crack. The prices Putin and Russia are counting on are tending to rise over the next few years. So, the move has to be more direct. I.e. block Russian sales. This is why the Ukraine crisis was cooked up in the first place! Seize the Russian gas tap/faucet (against the interests of both Ukraine and the EU). And then close it. The cost to Russia has already been calculated at approx. $ 100 bn per year. Obama came to Europe twice in a month to sell his shale gas as a replacement fuel. Pity he hasn’t got it yet (and perhaps never will), so we’d best be careful!
Russia will go East. Putin’s popularity is higher than the west expected. Crimea and Donbass have made the situation less fruitful to the West than it might otherwise have been. NB the kind of economic gun boat policy we’re seeing can be used against anyone. Not just the Russians.
iv of iv
Apparently Cameron wants to kick Russia out of the SWIFT system (an obstacle, costly no doubt, but not in itself fatal for Russian trade, it seems); Cameron’s been repeating the US establishment demand; Russia would react I reckon by cutting back on gas supplies to west, making for a chilly winter here in EU and on the upside presumably lower gas bills for Russian citizens, helping internal consumption. Russia would be hit hard and some think EU will be hit hard too (not just as far as gas is concerned) while the USA won’t suffer in anything like the same way (I mesn as a direct economic/business result of this chicanery in Eurasia).
US may feel they’re into a now-or-never phase and that’s why they’ve got to hit hard in all kinds of directions before everyone turns their backs on the dollar. So expect more and more fronts to open up, and a small sliver of land just north of Egypt to take advantage of the mayhem.
Germany’s getting scared. She should remember that if she does the principled and long-term thing, this kind of economic gun boat policy can be used against anyone. Not just the Russians. For how long, though? We must learn new languages.
But it looks like NATO wants to play hardball.
The only window for diplomatic action now looks like via Germany.
France? (Hollande living up to his anatomic nickname and toeing the US line on ISIS and Syria).
dear saker, I am french and I hope that you are right in your analysis and that the contract was only suspended for a few weeks.
Anyway, whatever the end of the story, there is a very positive outcome to it : many french people will understand the inanity of OTAN, the degree of submission of the media-political french leaders to the whims of the USA, and that the real interest of France is to have good relations with Russia.

@sasy,
Re: your summary above.
The problem with “driving” energy/commodities down is that it would absolutely cripple the entire Empire. The primary reason being that the “price” of LNG must triple before fracking become profitable. If the price cannot triple the US economy will crash. Not only that but if the price of oil drops, the Canadian economy will collapse with it.
On another note, NATO seems to preparing for something big as this. Is being typed. There has been no mention thus far about the growing unrest in Kiev eigher, nor the mass protests against the summit in Wales.
As far as the original post by Saker, there is a pretty damning article about Francois Holland on the CBC site today. Not only that but there narrative has been spin so far that the “published” updates are contradicting the on-air reports for the second day. As of this “comment” todays “article” has been changed over 13 times and yesterdays changed over 10 times. The trolls cannot even keep up with the narrative shifts. It should also be noted that the “reports” yesterday mentioned the ship deal was only suspended until November…

The Paradigm Shift has reached a higher gear.
The danger and risk levels have gone to critical levels.
The risk of economic destruction has gone into recognizable critical levels.
The source of the problem has become more easily identified.
The typical tactics not only do not work, but expose the bully, the warmonger, the hegemony advocate, the wizard of violence, the imposer of self-serving rules, the crime syndicate bosses, the masters of espionage, the man with killer drone toys.
The USDollar is defended by war, market interference (see LIBOR, FOREX, debt ratings), accounting rules gimmicks, rigged detonation of banking systems, pointed assassinations for heads of state, even fabricated natural events (see HAARP in Philippines).
The entire system is supported by Zero Interest Rate Policy (ZIRP) which distorts asset values and discourages savings. The misallocation of resources matches the wet blanket effect (see Money Velocity shutdown). The entire system is supported by Quantitative Easing (QE) which has monetized the USGovt bond market, the US property market, the US stock market, and soon possibly the US municipal bond market.
The capital destruction is rampant, severe, and entering vicious feedback loops.
The entire financial and economic system was held together in 2013 by cables and ropes in grand lashing style.
The entire financial and economic system is now held together in 2014 by strings and howitzers, not to mention the endless sanctions and destructive rules, even punitive bank fines.

Those Mistral Ships (quite the name)
France is attempting to have its cake and eat it. Either delivery is suspended, or contract is cancelled, or contract in force.
ZH: France flip-flops again, Says Mistral Contract not cancelled OR suspended
>>>>
“[.] Hollande “explained” today that the contract for the Mistral sale to Russia “is not broken or suspended” but will instead depend on events in the coming weeks. Ironically, the Russians may actually be pleased if the deal is canceled as they avoid overpaying for the ships and benefit from France’s weakening.
As Bloomberg’s Leonid Bershidsky explains,
France’s decision to freeze delivery of a Mistral helicopter-carrier warship to Russia is yet another example of how clueless Western leaders are about Moscow politics. [.]
…
The contract has penalty clauses that France will struggle to avoid, possibly turning Russia’s loss on the supposedly unfavorable price into a gain. At the same time, the defense industry will be able to portray Russia’s foreign partners as unreliable and argue for increased funding to retool domestic factories.
Moar costs “ >>>
Itar-Tass:
sums up costs:
[The second ship], christened the Sevastopol, was laid in June 2013 at the Baltic Plant in St Petersburg. Under the contract, the shipyard built the aft of the ship that was brought to Saint-Nazaire for the final stage of testing last week.
Initial plans indicated that the Sevasopol was to be commissioned by the Russian Navy at the end of 2015.
If the agreement is broken off, France will have to pay a penalty measuring several billion euro.[.]
(emphasis added)
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Comment:
Get that? Not one or two but Several billion euros. 2 x costs 2 ships + penalty of 600 million euros each ship?; add the moral damages to France’s reputation.
Imho, the damage is done, and done. . Once a party unilaterally changes the condition of a contract the reputation is now labeled as an unreliable supplier. Surely there is no such clause in the contract under TERMS: as in “Delivery”:[which would permit France to unilaterally decide not to fulfill its obligations under the contract agreement …depending on the weather.

Anon Mongoose,
The news reports on this thread alone has been absolutely dizzy-making, to say nothing of what you’ve reported re: the wheels-within-wheels of whatever is really happening with the Mistrals. Part of me soooo wants to believe Mohamed’s contention that Obama and Putin are in cahoots to bring down at least the Neocon/Saudi/Zionist axis. But even so, as nice as that end may be, they’d still be doing it on the backs of so many innocent people, uh, everywhere. And there’d still be a whole lot of roto-rooting necessary, uh, everywhere.
But let’s just say for the sake of argument that this deal *is* in Russia’s best interest and that Putin has been in on it: what might he get in return? With all our posturing, which may or may not mean anything, what even looks like a clue? And who here believes that anyone of any stature whatever in the EU and/or NATO bureaucracies has not been quite thoroughly bought and paid for? Meanwhile, Marine Le Pen might well gain power and Merkel too might fall (Halleluia!). Would Cameron, with or without Scotland? The worst case scenario here would be Biden-Burisma or, if he got impeached too, we’d end up with Boehner. And with elections coming up, he’s even less likely to buck The War Party. Well, let me re-phrase that since we have no Not-War Party: there’s simply no way Boehner or anyone else would buck the rest of Congress and our very-well-propagandized public and take an actual peacemaker stance.
But could all of this just be posturing? While there’s obviously a whole lot more to all of this than meets any of our eyes or ears — to the point where we really may not be able to figure out any of it — maybe all we can say for sure is that a whole lot more people are going to have to die… for something? Can you make head or tails out of this? Because I really, truly can’t.
Anonymous 19:17,

Every. Last. Bit. of this Monty Python-worthy saga would be side-splittingly funny if no one had suffered and died. Infrastructure can be rebuilt; people generally aren’t quite so lucky.
@Mohamed
Like I say, they are all in cahoots
No Mohamed. They are not all in cahoots. Unfortunately you are.
You are in cahoots with the Brotherhood agenda as you have been since day 1. Your purpose is to sew division and doubt into the minds of all people who come here.
You work hard to undermine hope in the people who are willing and capable of leading the Resistance — including Valdimir Putin and Hassan Nasrallah.
Recently I told you I did a comparison between Yusuf of the Koran and Joeseph of the Torah/Bible. As you already know for Christians and Jews Joseph is chosen while for Muslims Yusuf is pure.
Let me describle for you what is a Nazi.
He is a person who believes he is chosen, by race and by creed. Infused with puritanism he resolves to cleanse the world of the inferior and impure.
This is your mentality and the mentality of the takfiris and war profiteer crimminals you work so hard to support.
You can fool some of the people some of the time Mohamed but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.
It is you and the rest of your unthinking and shameless kind that is in cahoots with the devil worshipping Imperialists. You will obfuscate and claim everyone is just as cynical and hypocritical as are you but I see the actions of those two men, Putin and Nasrallah, and I see you have nothing in common.
I judge people by their actions and you, Mohamed, are a liar and a fraud.

Mohamed has been proffering the Obama-Putin in cahoots meme. He may have forgotten the /snark tag.
. . . . . .
A dizzy day indeed. As the AngloZio financials crumble, propped up on both sides of the Atlantic by the Fed, MOPE (management of perception economics) is all they got left. While they fear monger us into insanity, Mr. Putin and other members of the BRICS club, think China, are attending to business.

In the ”We can act unilaterally category:
Obama has a pen! – well at least, for 5 mins, he is putting down the putter;
Stated he intends to change unilaterally the founding document of Russia-NATO Council
Mr. Lavrov counters;
[that’s] incorrect both from the practical and legal points of view,[.]
I would like to remind that the document was drafted by all members of the Russia-NATO Council,” the Russian minister said, commenting on US President Barack Obama’s statement on the plans to introduce changes to the document. Obama made such statement during his visit to Estonia on Wednesday.
“The document can be changed only collectively, and any unilateral move can be made only in regard to the withdrawal from this document,” Lavrov said.
. . . . .
Cue up Obama’s puppy, Bo…ee–urm, I mean David:
We have UK Camero-moro-n stating : UK does not need Assad’s permission to conduct air strikes over Syria
. . . .
FFS, that’s some precedent, No?
International law applies to all others but not members of the Anglo-Zionist club.

Bought and paid for:
Sometime ago I watched an interview –with someone who is widely read – a former US.gov official. To my surprise he revealed who is on whose payroll. So when we wonder why such leaders cave, it is not due to NSA data B-mail; there is a bank deposit, The corruption is endless.
@MoA,
Can’t make this up – Displays the evidence with disclaimer, hard to disappear that which is written.
Do European Governments Buy Overpriced Steel From Ukrainian Oligarchs?
If these claims are true there will certainly be some scandal about this abuse of taxpayer money for bribing Ukrainian oligarchs and subsidizing the coup government in Ukraine.

Thanks, Anonymous 04 September, 2014 18:25; your info on energy prices is very interesting; the Forbes article I basically summarise was, in any case, written by an economic hit man (judging from the pic, I’d say a well-fed vampire).
Hello,
Translating “couille molle” by “soft testicle” doesn’t give the pejorative gist it has in French. First, “couille” is vernacular and is more “ball” then “testicle”, and second, “molle” in this case, is more “flabby” then “soft”. I would rather say “flabby balls” then “soft testicle”.
Best regards,
Bruno
Is this a forum for Russian trolls? Honestly, your arguments are pathetic.
Don’t let’s cry over the BNP Paribas fine. Do you not consider it normal that a bank operating in the United States, a bank that generates 10 billion dollars annually in the US, should comply with US law? It should at the very least answer prosecutor’s questions, because in a court of law, lying always gets a heavier punishment… and lying while covering one’s tracks for five years is illegal. Do you not agree?
As for the measly 9 billion that you refer to. Do you expect that France will pay back the ~$30 billion that the US taxpayer supplied to French banks during the financial crisis–at a time when Americans could have made good use of that money? No, because France has a long history of borrowing money from Americans that it never pays back.
France has also been protected by the United States for years without paying anything for that protection. That’s why her army relied on the US to wage her wars in Africa recently. Did she think to pay back the US? Is she considering paying the high cost of US protection since after the second world war? No… Because France loves living in an illusion that she can maintain her status as a superpower… despite all the facts… and at the same time bite the hand that feeds her.
