The United States wants to ensure that any nuclear deal between Iran and major powers includes the possibility of restoring United Nations sanctions if Tehran breaks the agreement. It’s a stipulation Moscow and Beijing stand firmly against.
That so-called “snapback” is a major sticking point for US and European negotiators, who want to be able to automatically reverse the easing of any UN sanctions if Iran reneges on the deal, sources told Reuters.
At the same time, Washington does not want to risk vetoes from Russia and China, which oppose such a snapback.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power said Washington wanted to block Russia and China from issuing such vetoes in an Iran nuclear agreement.
“We’re going to do so in a manner that doesn’t require Russian and Chinese support or a vote for snapback… because we are in a different world in 2015 than we were when the sanctions architecture was put in place,” Power said in an interview with Charlie Rose on Bloomberg television.
On reflection, how far could this go? If somehow the US were able to achieve this, against the objections of UNSC members Russia and China – would there be anything left but for those two nations to quit the UN?
What would happen in such a case? A second UN? And the world would stand up and count itself divided? Who would join what?
I think it’s too soon in the world for such a move, but I suspect the day is coming, and I wouldn’t mind a bit of foreshadowing and out-loud speculation among nations right now. One fine day, as we saw with AIIB, the nations rushing to join the new and improved Eurasian and Southern World UN might be surprising.
I read they were only going to “ease” sanctions, and these would be only the nuclear related ones, and USA was in any case maintaining the right to continue/reimpose sanctions which had been introduced for other “offences” (not specified).
So they don’t need this. It is just a chance to lord it over Russia and China with a “we are going to veto your veto power” muscle flexing.
I hope other financing/banking methods develop far enough and fast enough that Iran will be able to reject signing up to the disgusting inspection conditions. Inspectors are to be allowed not only into military and scientific establishments, but anywhere they think is suspicious — it would be like agreeing to “stop and frisk” laws that include random cavity searches.
The UN should move somewhere out of the US (which is always behind in its payments anyway).
Just a paragraph in a BRICS news article, but running through the news there it looks as though the BICS nations may start taking a stand as a block on some of these issues shortly.
In August 1962 Soviet leader Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev proposed moving the UN Headquarters from New York to West Berlin. Here is a portion of his conversation that followed on this subject with U Thant, the acting UN secretary general at the time:
“… U THANT. The question about the possible move of UN headquarters from New York to West Berlin. Of course, the question of moving the headquarters has not yet been discussed by the Western powers, but an ever-growing number of Asian and African countries are losing any illusions with respect to New York, particularly the African delegations. Delegates from various
countries come to me literally almost every day and say that discrimination is exhibited toward them almost everywhere: in the elevator, in the restaurant – everywhere. A situation might arise in which they might officially propose raising the question of moving the UN headquarters from New York.
…
N. S. KHRUSHCHEV. Something needs to be thought over so that people are not subjected to discrimination. For the UN, this is incredible. The United Nations is an organization in which all
people are equal. But representatives of the countries in the UN cannot find a room in a hotel, travel on a streetcar, or go to a restaurant. This is incredible. And this is Western civilization. …”
Will she call security to remove Russia and China for refusing to toe the line? Or just turn the microphones off..again?
Getting past an atavistic urge to punch Power’s lights out, is there any mileage in boycotting the UN until such abuses of function are resolved?
It would certainly send a firm message that if the UN doesn’t fulfil it’s remit, it has no purpose. Unilateral decision-making is a corruption of function.
How can it continue to exist if the global playground bully isn’t brought to book?
Obama said in a letter to US Congress that the United States will continue the sanctions against Syrian individuals and entities as part of the national emergency actions against Damascus.
It really takes a very stupid person to still believe that the USA/Israel are not running the al qaida/ISIL and all the other phony zionazi sponsored “Muslim” terrorists.
Known for her outspoken and ultra-nationalistic views, Shaked attracted global attention and criticism in July 2014, when she posted a Facebook status denouncing Palestinians, during Israel’s 50-day military offensive in Gaza.
“The Palestinian people [have] declared war on us, and we must respond with war. Not an operation, not a slow-moving one, not low-intensity, not controlled escalation, no destruction of terror infrastructure, no targeted killings.”
“Enough with the oblique references. This is a war. Words have meanings. This is a war. It is not a war against terror, and not a war against extremists, and not even a war against the Palestinian Authority. These too are forms of avoiding reality. This is a war between two people. Who is the enemy? The Palestinian people.”
The post, which was later deleted by Shaked and which was posted one day before a Palestinian teenager was kidnapped and burnt alive by Israeli extremists, was interpreted by many as calling for the genocide of Palestinian people, and inciting hatred between racial groups.
In another Facebook post Shaked also claimed that there was no difference between those people involved in Palestinian terror organizations, and those within the general population, calling Palestinian children “snakes”.
“Behind every terrorist stand dozens of men and women, without whom he could not engage in terrorism. Actors in the war are those who incite in mosques, who write the murderous curricula for schools, who give shelter, who provide vehicles, and all those who honor and give them their moral support.
“They are all enemy combatants, and their blood shall be on all their heads. Now this also includes the mothers of the martyrs, who send them to hell with flowers and kisses. They should follow their sons, nothing would be more just. They should go, as should the physical homes in which they raised the snakes. Otherwise, more little snakes will be raised there.”
The comments attracted widespread criticism, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan comparing Shaked to Hitler.
“If these words had been said by a Palestinian, the whole world would have denounced it,” he said.
This is like the USA openly making the head of the KKK the head of the US justice dept. It is the zionazi control of the west that allows Israel to openly mimic a Jewish supremacist version of nazi Germany not only without criticism and sanction, but with full support for the psychotic goatbuggers.
Sounds like Nazi Pelousy & the healthcare–u have to pass it to be allowed to read what’s in it.
The name of this new treaty is “the Trans-Pacific Partnership”, and it is being touted as perhaps the most important trade agreement in history. But very few people in this country are talking about it, because none of us are allowed to see it. An article that was just released by Politico detailed the extreme secrecy that is surrounding this trade agreement…
TTP and its brother TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) are top secret indeed.
TTIP is not allowed to be read even by the EU ministers who are expected to SIGN IT. It is thousands of pages long but nobody is allowed to read it all. Information (or lies?) is leaked from time to time but they don’t want the industries or individuals to be affected by it to know in advance what they are in for.
It is not surprising the USA would invent such conditions.
It still is a little surprising the EU has not told them to go and jump, for expecting such conditions. … although maybe not surprising, the EU Parliament is an unelected dictatorship too.
UN Lawyer Calls TTP & TTIP ‘a dystopian future in which corporations and not democratically elected governments call the shots’ – The EU simply doesn’t mention the downsides. And they also don’t mention that, “Obama’s TTIP Trade Deal w. Europe Would Be Disastrous for Europe, Says the First Independent Study.” That study wasn’t paid for by the EU, so they just ignore it. President Obama performs brilliantly for America’s billionaires, even though most of them are Republicans.
About Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, I must say that I love this man. I can think of no superior voice on the military aspects of what I call the Middle East. I owe it to the Saker for introduction to Nasrallah, and Saker’s profound respect and admiration for this man and for his army was my first clue to pay close attention.
I don’t know how far and how loudly his voice carries throughout the Middle East. In this address he made a great call for the entire region to stand together against a common threat. That threat is the US and Iraeli plan to divide all nations into smaller pieces. He warned that even the allies of the US – notably Saudi Arabia – would find their day at hand, and they themselves would suffer the same treatment.
As an example, he said that Hezbollah was in Syria not because they felt that the war was a sectarian Syrian matter, but because they were convinced – and time had added to this conviction – that the war was a war against all the region. If Syria fell, what would befall Lebanon, and Palestine?
The first 19 minutes are spent with Yemen. I regard Sayed Hassan Nasrallah’s analysis of the Yemen situation as the definitive SitRep bar none. He repeats that Saudi Arabia has failed to accomplish any of its initially stated objectives with the first operation (something Storm). Now it has claimed total success and changed the name (to Operation Hope something) with more vague objectives that it can argue it’s achieving.
But in reality, on the ground, what the world has witnessed is that Saudi Arabia (and I’m adding, combined with the US and Israel) cannot even conquer Yemen. All it has done is enrage and unite the people against it. What is happening now is the effort to destroy Yemen, since it cannot be subdued. Even against this however, Yemen will prevail (and the triumvirate will fail – we should note this carefully, that all that power cannot even take Yemen).
Nasrallah calls on the region and the world to insist that humanitarian aid be allowed to enter Yemen, because Saudi bombing is specifically the policy of starvation and attrition.
He says more, in his 50 minutes. About Iraq (starting at minute 19), and the visible strategy of dividing the nation into 3 parts, and also of rendering the Iraqi army incapable of fighting ISIL.
And he speaks of eastern Lebanon and the battle about to begin there. One could wish for a transcript – however, I take great joy in the brilliance of the live voice translation, a wonderful effort by the translator. This does mean that the only written word we have is the machine-rendered YouTube thing – so one has to listen to the speech itself.
May all those involved in bringing this message to us English-speakers across the world receive the full blessings of the God to Whom they pray.
Operation “Decisive storm” Operation “Restoring Hope”. Very Islamic/Saudi sounding titles?
I take is these were the titles of the scripts that US give SA.
Scorched earth policy. US president was kicked out so now the country will be destroyed.
Arabic is a very poetic language, and he speaks in nahawi (which is the written form of arabic), though the translation is very good, many subtleties are lost in translation, especially done in real time.
When Nasrallah speaks, most listen in the mideast, especially the israelis – they may hate him, but they fear him more. (I have lived there, Syria and Lebanon, and speak from my own experience).
Thank you for the information, I greatly appreciate it.
As for translation – I appreciate when people try to present translations in real time, but for myself, I prefer to read subtitles and listen to the voice speaking in the original sound. I suspect that more of those subtleties you mention might be carried into a written translation also – although I don’t actually know.

Greek FinMin Varoufakis and German FinMin Schaeuble are cross-talking again this morning:
*GREECE’S VAROUFAKIS SAYS ‘GREXIT’ IS ‘NOT AN ISSUE’ (well the market & ECB thinks it is)
*SCHAEUBLE SAYS EXPECTATIONS FOR EUROGROUP MEETING NOT VERY HIGH (oh ok)
As next week’s meeting and deadlines loom, hope is running high today in Greece… even though Schaeuble warns “don’t expect spectacular Eurogroup results.”
I’m a fan of Nasrallah and of Hezbollah.
Great speech. Nasrallah is correct about the risk that even US clients, particularly the saudi nihilists incur. After all, the current neocon strategy is largely derived from the israeli Oded Yinon plan. A translation of said plan is provided here: http://www.globalresearch.ca/greater-israel-the-zionist-plan-for-the-middle-east/5324815
Although there are many actors involved in the proxy war against Syria, I believe the key factor to get the war started and keep it going as long as possible are the neocons, who interestingly, are not mentioned very often. People tend to focus on Saudia A., Catar, Turkey, etc(all guilty too, of course).
The war in Syria is mainly a proxy war on Iran and of course Hezbollah itself. Eliminating the only stable Arab state friendly to Iran and Hezbollah – and hostile to the zionist entity – would create more isolation for Iran. Hezbollah loses the strategic depth Syria gives and supply routes while gaining as neighbors a bunch of hostile wahabi fundamentalists, both in Syria and Lebanon itself.
As Eric Margolis has written:
The deal reached in Lausanne, Switzerland by Iran and five powers, led by the US, appears to be about nuclear capability. In fact, the real issue was not nuclear weapons, which Iran does not now possess, but Iran’s potential geopolitical power … What Israel really feared was not Iran’s non-existent nuclear threat but rather its ongoing support for the beleaguered Palestinians. Iran became the last Mideast nation giving strong backing to creation of a Palestinian state. The Arab states opposing Israel have been silenced: Syria, Libya and Iraq crushed by war and torn asunder, Egypt and Jordan bought off with huge bribes. The Saudis have secretly allied themselves to Israel. So only Iran was left to champion Palestine. That is why Israel made such a determined effort to push the US into war with Iran.
As I said before, I’m a fan of Hezbollahs military wing.
Highly disciplined, dedicated and well trained, they are probably some of the best light infantry in the world. Unfortunately, as the shia lebanese population is pretty small, there are not enough of them.
For those not familiar with the hezbollah military wing, some interesting vids;
Aljazeera Exclusive Interview with a Hezbollah Fighter, hezb soldier appears at about 2:40, funny what he says about the highly overrated israelis! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZNViirWTnk
Stating that Iran is the only ME state supporting the Palestinians is a bit of an exaggeration, in fact they severed all support to Hamas/Gaza when Hamas pledged full support for the Syrian rebels in 2012. Hamas supported and trained fighters in Syria to topple Assad’s regime until the Israeli invasion of Gaza forced them to end their public support for the rebels and try to regain Iranian support which I don’t think has actually resumed.
Iran, just as other ME regimes , supports/uses the Palestinian Cause to further their own agendas and withholds that support when the Palestinians don’t follow their lead.
Some even many of the rebels in Syria are Wahabi/ salaifists but Hezbollah and Iran are also Islamic fundamentalists of the Twelver variety.
Dismissing the legitimate civilian uprising to overthrow the autocratic Assad regime in Syria may be convenient but it ignores the fact that most of the people fighting today to overthrow that regime are Syrians. There are foreign fighters in the rebel forces but if that is an issue it must include the fact that Hezbollah, Iranian forces and Iraqi militias are also foreigners.

But they seem to be alert to it.
Where’s the money, Lebowskiopoulos?
(from comment seen on ZH a few days ago under another greece article)
Greece…

I’m a fan of Nasrallah and of Hezbollah.
Great speech. Nasrallah is correct about the risk that even US clients, particularly the saudi nihilists incur. After all, the current neocon strategy is largely derived from the israeli Oded Yinon plan. A translation of said plan is provided here:
http://www.globalresearch.ca/greater-israel-the-zionist-plan-for-the-middle-east/5324815
As I said before, I’m a fan of Hezbollahs military wing.
Highly disciplined, dedicated and well trained, they are probably some of the best light infantry in the world. Unfortunately, as the shia lebanese population is pretty small, there are not enough of them.
For those not familiar with the hezbollah military wing, some interesting vids;

Thanks Luca..that’s really interesting..
Then DIY:-).
