As it was promised, the Russian Defence Ministry analyzed effectiveness of missile and bomb strike made by the United States, Great Britain, and France on Syria as well as actions held by Syrian air defence units.
It is to be reminded that on April 14 from 3.42 a.m. to 5.10 a.m. (MSK) different objects of the Syrian Arab Republic were attacked air and sea-based missile carriers of the United States and allies.
The cruise missile strikes were delivered from the areas of the Red Sea, Arabian Gulf, Mediterranean Sea, al-Tanf illegally controlled by the US troops.
Radar systems of the Syrian Arab Republic tracked 103 air targets.
According to official statements made by representatives of military departments of the United States, Great Britain, and France all strikes were targeted at three Syrian objects. Therefore, each object was targeted at by 30 and more cruise missiles and air-to-ground missiles.
However, such statements cause great skepticism.
The fact is that all Syrian objects declared as targets are not subsurface ones or well protected by the echeloned air defence system of bunkers.
As it can be clearly seen at space images spread by Western media, these are ordinary buildings on the surface.
It is to be reminded that, for example, warhead of the Tomahawk cruise missile, depending on the type, carries up to half a ton of explosive weight.
Therefore, it was enough not more than 10 missiles for each of the three targets in order to destroy them by any calculation methods, taking into account the triple overlap for their guaranteed destruction.
Survey of the territory of the affected sites in Syrian settlements of Barza and Jaramana confirms these calculations.
As it can be seen on the photograph of the facility in the Barza area, the nature of destruction as a result of a missile strike does not correspond to the scale of destruction from the use of three tens of cruise missiles.
Moreover, the survey of the territory of this and other objects did not reveal either a large number of debris and fragmentations of ammunition, or a corresponding number of impact craters.
Now, there is a real situation.
Real targets of the strikes made by the US, Great Britain, and France on April 14 were not only objects in Barza and Jaramana but also Syrian military objects, including airfields.
The Syrian Arab Army used S-200, S-125, Osa, Kvadart, Buk, and Strela air defence systems in order to repel this missile strike.
It is to be stressed that Soviet designed systems were produced more than 40 years ago.
The government troops also actively used the Russia-made Pantsyr air defence system, which had been received by the SAA earlier.
This system during the anti-aircraft battle showed almost 100 percent efficiency.
It is to be stressed that Syrian air defence system was organized on the principle of object defence. Almost all objects protected by air defence systems repelled the strike.
In total, the Syrian AD systems eliminated 71 cruise missiles of 103 ones.
Four missiles targeted the Damascus International Airport; 12 missiles – the Al-Dumayr airdrome, all the missiles have been shot down.
18 missiles targeted the Blai airdrome, all the missiles shot down.
12 missiles targeted the Shayrat airbase, all the missiles shot down.
Two missiles targeted the Tiyas airfield, all the missiles shot down.
Five out of nine missiles were shot down targeting the unoccupied Mazzeh airdrome.
Thirteen out of sixteen missiles were shot down targeting the Homs airdrome. There are no heavy destructions.
Almost 30 missiles and corrected air bombs were targeted research-and-development objects located near Barza and Jaramana. Five of them were hit by Syrian AD systems.
In total, Syrian air defence systems fired 112 air defence missiles.
Pantsyr AD system fired 25 missiles and hit 24 targets;
Buk system fired 29 missiles and hit 24 targets;
Osa system fired 11 and hit 5 targets;
S-125 system fired 13 missiles and hit 5 targets;
Strela-10 system fired 5 missiles and hit 3 targets;
Kvadrat system fired 21 and hit 11 targets;
S-200 system fired 8 and hit no targets.
It is to be added that no one should be misled by low results made by S-200 air defence missile systems.
This system is primarily designed to hit aircraft. However, this system shot down a fighter of a neighboring country. The aircraft took efforts to intrude airspace of the Syrian Arab Republic.
The rest systems showed very high efficiency despite high speed of targets and extremely small radar-cross section.
This conforms with my calculation as well. If only there were more pictures/videos of interception or of the debris of missiles launched by the US alliance, Russia could make more credible statement to greater audience. Anyone here got some links?
Having seen this video:
https://youtu.be/CDkGS3zD20o
Missile defense has been described as hitting a bullet with a bullet. And now you want to also have a video camera prepositioned and filming exactly where that interception occurs? Yes, it can happen when its at a short range and over a major city, but that’s not always going to be the case.
I want a franchise selling Old Soviet AA/AD stuff.
Lots of countries want a chance, and low cost, easy to use, long-lasting quality has all the earmarks of a successful enterprise.
I’ll even take bitcoin.
God bless those Commie Ruskies. They knew SAM before SAM had other names.
Soviet AA/AD systems improve with age, like old wine :-)
They used to be unable to intercept large objects like Israeli fighters who went and played over Syrian airspace repeatedly as if it was their home turf.
Now they succeed in destroying 70% of a coordinated single wave of small objects flying very low.
Really, Soviet technology is almost magic :-)
Maybe the AA/AD operators had additional training and experience recently which improved their skills?
“S-200 system fired 8 and hit no targets.
It is to be added that no one should be misled by low results made by S-200 air defence missile systems.
This system is primarily designed to hit aircraft. However, this system shot down a fighter of a neighboring country. The aircraft took efforts to intrude airspace of the Syrian Arab Republic”
Not sure how to reconcile the S200 ‘fired 8 hit none’ and the shot down intruding aircraft but otherwise good shooting!
I wonder which neighbour? Turkey, Jordan, Saudi, F/UK/US from a neighbouring country -like Cyprus, Israel?
If it was the UK from Cyprus, pity buffon BOJO wasn’t on board.
zion. He’s speaking of the F16 recently shot down. It’s ambiguous in the translation, I think.
Can anyone check what he said in Russian?
Correction:That should be ‘buffoon’ and perhaps the S-200 reference was some time back for that Israeli F-16?
the S-125 in Syria was actually recently upgraded with new radars and missiles (the so-called Pechora-2M complex) specifically suited for hitting low-flying stealthy targets like cruise missiles. the S-200 was an older modification which is essentially just geared for hitting big, fast, far-away targets like planes. as one AA officer put it on a Russian forum, “all this talk about S-200s firing at cruise missiles is like a Howitzer firing at helicopters”.
stuff like Pantsir is specifically designed for intercepting cruise missiles and as such it’s probably no surprise it was the most effective.
A Manpad could take down a Tomahawk missile. Its slow moving.
I suspect that you’d need some sort of fire direction from the AA radars. The Tomahawks are slow moving when compared to other missiles. But they still move as fast as many jet airplanes. And they stay low to the ground. Thus, you would need someone at a AA radar in communication with the Manpads telling them when and in which direction to fire.
In WW2, the allies used to use fighter planes to shoot down the early V-1 missiles with machine gun fire. Which makes me wonder if a fighter jet directed by air control could get in behind a cruise missile and shoot it down with heat seeking missiles? Doesn’t seem like it would have to be a new fighter jet. And old Mig would probably suffice.
Great can we have some decent air defence systems down here in Australia because we have a big mouthed liar for a PM who seems to think its a good idea to drag Australia into ww3 because his his overseas handlers kicked him in the guts again and screamed…bark bitch..!
I express my feeling and thoughts toward Mother Russia with this prayer which reflect voice and sentiment of millions if not billions of voiceless and oppressed people of this sad planet.
“Oh Almighty God of Universe, please bless Russia, please protect these nation, its soul, this gigantic land.
Please send your light and energy to mother Russia.
Russia is the only hope remaining for the oppressed people of the world. Almighty God please give Russia more strength, resolve and patience as long they do not cross the limits set by You.
Oh Almighty, The rest of the world have no chance to stand against the universal tyrants, the rest have no means to defend themselves. Russia has the mind, the innovative power, creative ability, intelligence and resolve to create means and tools of self defense and defense of oppressed ones.
What would have done Syria without these tools created by Russian genius minds? There would be many deaths in Damascus International Airport, if not for Russian innovative mind”.

Did you see the frightened ones?
Did you hear the falling bombs?
Did you ever wonder why we had to run for shelter when the

The flames are all gone, but the pain lingers on.

While I find the US claim that they targetted Barzeh with 76(!!) missiles which all hit hard to reconcile both with planning (after all everyone knew that the building was CW free – the OPCW had recently rechecked it) and visible results, what Russia is claiming also needs some checking.
Firstly, it appears that the strikes that FUKUS is claiming at Him Shinshar near Homs – with video evidence – is not mentioned in the Russian MoD. (Are these the ones Russia says were targeting the Homs aero dome that had 3 hits?)
Secondly, Russia claims 4 (out of 9) missiles hit the Mazzeh airfield. FUKUS is not making any such claim. Satellite coverage should show at least some damage there or not.
Thirdly, Russia claims 25 missiles (out of 30) hit Barza and Jaramana. FUKUS doesn’t claim any hits in Jaramana.
Fourthly, just as the missiles FUKUS is claiming for Barzeh seems excessively high, the numbers that Russia is claiming to target Syrian airfields (4, 12, 18, 12, 2, 9, 16) seem low in some cases and unclear as to what the point of these would be.
Fifth, there is a discrepancy of 2 between the Pentagon (105 fired) and Russian (103 fired) counts (which could perhaps be a tracking error).
While both sides have reasons to exaggerate successes and downplay failures (as they both have done in the past), the vast discrepancy between the two means one party is lying much more than the other. My assumption is that the truth is known to both sides and any fudging is not due to errors but deliberate falsification for reasons to do with morale, accountability and arm sales.
However, the truth would certainly be known across the wider defense community. It also has implications for future planning: the Russian claims being true mean that FUKUS were planning on a wider strike which is worrying (even if successfully repelled) because FUKUS will hot back bigger and stronger to save face. The FUKUS claims being true means that the Syrians are sitting ducks with implications for the Iranians and the Russians themselves while emboldening Israel even more not to mention the FUKUS itself.
The truth in some fashion can be gauged by how the various actors position themselves in the coming days.
Ludwig
Mattis first confirmed hit would be slightly more than double the strike from last year.
The first claims in MSM early in the morning were that the strike hit chemical weapons depots, facilities, and airports (from where chemical attacks were launched)
We also have confirmation everywhere that “storm shadows” were used, as well as AGM-158. No doubt that FUKUS were very confident their new toys (remember trump’s “smart” tweet…) were supposedly effective.
No doubt they had good intel from anti-aircraft positions.
So i would rather think that:
– Those new toys were used in priority for military, defended, targets (thinking few were needed as they were supposed “stealth”), other for the PR targets. This would explain the “low” numbers on airports. There are reports (and pictures) telling defenses had no trouble dealing with “storm shadows”, while AGM-158 caused many trouble (and passed through)
– The new toys were for sure being carefully tracked and monitored by FUKUS, so no doubt they assessed quickly the poor performance, possibly cancelling a 4th volley (that would have matched Mattis numbers), hence the actual numbers.
– Then FUKUS is quite embarrassed, as destruction pictures need to be provided of the targets hit (like last year strike), so, narrative was adapted to match (as much as possible) the available destruction pictures. In that case, pictures with limited damage on airports would better not be shown.
So the changes and adaptations between intentions / first reports on MSM / later reports ciming from FUKUS side (while comparatively RF version did not vary much), confirms that the strike performance was poor, and FUKUS just trying their best to save face (and money, do not forget the big contracts for the new toys, remember “patriot” 100% efficiency during “desert strorm”, confirmed few years after to be… 0%)
For fifth point, well, last year there was the same discrepancy, and US later admitted 2 defective missiles.
I believe the critical issue now comes from AGM-158: What was the real success rate of those ?
The US propaganda machine was a bit caught out by this.
First, they had to brag that they had launched more missiles in this attack than in the attack last year. That’s pure gangster posturing, and they had to do that or else the other American gangsters would think they were weak.
But, then they had the problem that they got so few hits. So, they had to make up some BS on the fly to try to pretend that of course that they were invincible and strong. Again, if they didn’t look strong, they look vulnerable to the other gangsters
Thus, the ridiculous claim that they launched 76 missiles at one target. The Russian general handled this very well with the point that the bomb craters don’t show the sort of overlapping damage that would be caused by 76 1000 lb warheads all hitting one target.
Well given that 19 AGM-158s were launched by the B-1s all at Barzeh (as per FUKUS) and 23/30 hit (as per Russia), safe to assume that even Russia may be admitting that most if not all of the 19 AGM-158 hit.
But back to my last para where I said that the truth of what happened can be ascertained by what actors do next. It seems as I write this that Israel is suspected by Syrian Gov media of breaking into Syrian airspace and firing missiles at airports manned by Russians. Syrian Gov says all missiles shot down. But if indeed Israel is emboldened now it may indicate my earlier conjecture that this would mean the FUKUS version of events (that Syria can be attacked at will) is more true is indeed the case…
The Syrians seem to be doing a decent job of shooting down a number of the missiles. Not 100%, but that’s always a more difficult goal. Which is one reason why people laughed at Reagan when he drew pictures of his magic shield. When the question was nuclear warheads and Star Wars, hitting and stopping some is just not good enough.
But if they are knocking down 5 of 8 missiles as in the first attack the other day, that’s not bad for defending an airfield.
As long as the Israelies aren’t losing planes, they can keep shooting them off. The US will supply more free missiles to them. And in at least some of the attacks, the Israelis are staying off at longer ranges and firing from over Lebanon ever since they lost that F-16. Which of course makes the attacks less effective and easier to defend.
One interesting thing is that no one is claiming that the Syrian air defenses have been hit and degraded from the FUKUS attacks.
Indeed, beyond the various propagandas, the truth of the matter will be assessed the same in the different defense communities. Among people with real influence, there is little doubt about who is lying the most in this case.
I would like to add three points:
– Against low flying cruise missiles – under 100 meters, probably even under 50 meters – only short range defense has a chance, because the horizon is only 25 km away at altitude 50 meters, moreover the attacking missiles use hills to hide
– EW jamming will be inefficient because those cruise missiles use a variety of sensors radar and optical, not only GPS
– If cruise missiles have been shot down, pictures of their warheads will emerge: those are «insensitivized» so as not to detonate in case of nearby explosion – very useful security when they are stored :-) ! – and will survive a crash.
Three days after the raid, no picture of a single warhead has emerged. It may be that Syrians have not been able to find any of the 71 that they have downed.
Or it may be that they downed a smaller number than 71.
It seems that Syria is now being used as some sort of Middle Eastern weapon’s testing and training ground for the U.S. and Russia. Let’s see how well each others destructive munitions function and blow stuff up. We already witnessed the recent live fire exercise agreed upon between the two nuclear powers. The fact that nobody died (allegedly) should be a clue to everyone that it was a preplanned event to appease Trump and his warmongering handlers.
Is Russia fighting alongside the SAA to defeat Syria’s enemies or not??
Clearly the U.S. is supporting SDF, ISIS/ISIL. They are both the enemy (besides Israel), yet Russia allows the Americans to operate from within Syria and does nothing to them. The S-XXX surface-to-air defensive systems are used to destroy the incoming U.S. missiles launched not only from U.S. naval and air assets but also on the ground from al-Tanf as Major General Konashenkov explained.
Why doesn’t Russia bomb al-Tanf where the U.S. ground forces operate, you know, the “enemy”? Even Larchmonter445 came to that conclusion. China and Russia should send Syria anti-ship missiles to knock out those warships trolling the coastal waters of Syria, too.
Just what kind of war fighting is this, I ask or is it all just theater?
If the worry is about “escalation”, the U.S. has been moving troops and heavy equipment into Syria for some time. We now read that two divisions of U.S. Marines are positioned in Jordan under the pretext of “war games.” We are way past escalation, in my opinion.
No worries, you will eat your popcorn hypnotized soon, stay tunned….
Yes, why doesn’t Russia wave its magic wand and make everything perfect? And someone tell them to start WW3 while they’re at it. And tell them to be quick about it, too. I don’t have all day.
“Targeting launch systems”
“What would be the point of a world without Russia anyway”
Unfortunately the global elite are playing their games.
Isn’t the area where fighting occurs commonly known as Theater of War?
It is all theater for the masses indeed, don’t be an extra.
You sound like the American Democrats and their chant of “We Want Nuclear War and We Want it Now!”
You are all in denial if you believe that U.S.-NATO isn’t preparing to invade Syria soon.
Russia must hold the line here in Syria otherwise they will be back on their heels and forced to retreat to Eastern Europe and fight the U.S.-NATO beast from their own land which will devastate the Russian people with mass casualties. Russia must redirect their country’s full production capability to make weapons and prepare their reserve forces for all out war now, in the event they cannot repel the U.S.-NATO invasion, which is going to happen most definitely.
Russia has the advantage of surprise if they concentrate their anti-ship firepower and cripple the U.S. naval fleet in the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea and Persian Gulf. It only take 2 – 3 direct hits to each vessel with anti-ship missiles to severely damage them and take them out of the fight. This strategy is significantly more cost effective than trying to shoot down hundreds of cruise missiles flying to their targets. Without ships the U.S. can only launch cruise missiles from the air or regional land bases and the S-XXX defensive systems will take care of them.
Unlike land forces, warships cannot protect their crews because they are out in the open sea and have no cover to retreat to. Every U.S. surface warship has an average crew complement of 300 sailors with the exception being aircraft carriers whose crew size is 5,000 plus including their air wings. That’s thousands of U.S. Navy experienced personnel of which a considerable number of them will not be available to crew new ships that will be built when the U.S. ramps up its production. It takes months to train a crew to learn to effectively fight a ship and by then Russia will finally be in a position to dictate terms to the U.S. instead of the way it is today.
If President Putin and his Defense Ministry don’t think the Pentagon war hawks are preparing a massive assault on Syria in the near term that will quickly move into the Black Sea while Russia scrambles to regroup to late, then shame on them for not protecting their nation from Satan’s horde!
You’re quite probably a dozen of steps or more behind the planning of the RF Armed Forces and our best friend VVP. Let them do their job of playing lethal chess against a spsychotic bunch of Ponzi scheme players.
Syrian air defense systems have been activated in response to a missile attack apparently targeting Shayrat Airbase in Homs province, state media SANA reports.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:15 A.M.) – The Syrian military announced at approximately 1:10 A.M. (Damascus Time), the Israeli Air Force fired several missiles towards the Shay’rat Airbase and its surrounding area in the Homs Governorate.
According to the statement, the Syrian Air Defense managed to intercept several of the missiles, but there was no mention as to whether or not the Israelis scored any direct hits.

Syrian air defenses respond to missiles over Homs province – state media
https://www.rt.com/news/424333-syria-missiles-defense-homs/
Syrian air defense systems have been activated in response to a missile attack apparently targeting Shayrat Airbase in Homs province, state media SANA reports.
Up to 10 missiles were destroyed by the Syrian Armed Forces, a military source told Sputnik. The Syrian air defenses managed to intercept some of the projectiles, according to a SANA reporter. Meanwhile, the Al Mayadeen news outlet is claiming that all the projectiles were intercepted and inflicted no physical damage or casualties at the targeted Syrian base.
The Pentagon has denied initiating strikes or conducting any other military activity in Homs province. “There is no US military activity in that area at this time,” the Pentagon’s spokesperson told Reuters. The same information was also shared with TASS news agency by Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon.
The raid in Homs countryside reportedly coincided with another missile attack against a military airbase near Damascus. According to various Arabic media channels, three missiles targeted Al Dumayr airport, but they were all allegedly downed by the Syrian air defenses.
According to yet unconfirmed reports, the missiles entered Syrian airspace from Lebanon, which may indicate that the Israeli Air Force could have been involved, Al-Masdar News reports, citing a military source. The outlet’s reporter also published several videos allegedly showing the launch of interceptor missiles.

Israel, which hardly ever acknowledges its raids inside Syria, failed to comment on its alleged involvement. “We don’t comment on such reports,” an Israeli military spokesman told Reuters. The US Department of Defense spokesman, meanwhile, told Sky News Arabia that there are “a lot of players” in the region who could have carried out the Tuesday morning attack in Syria.
While it remains unclear who launched the attack, the reported strike comes just days after Washington, London and Paris carried out a coordinated strike in Syria in the early hours of Saturday morning. It also comes roughly a week after two Israeli F-15 fighters targeted another Syria’s airbase in Homs province, Tiyas (also known as T-4 Airbase).

Syrian Air Defenses Target Missiles Over Homs, Damascus – Syrian TV
https://sputniknews.com/world/201804171063630172-syrian-air-defenses-target-missiles/
“Syria’s air defenses shot down missiles targeting Shayrat air base in Homs province early Tuesday, state media reported, as a Hezbollah media arm said missiles targeting Dumayr base near Damascus were also intercepted.
Iranian news agencies also reported missiles being fired toward Shayrat. Approximately nine missiles reportedly targeted the base; their source isn’t yet clear.
A Hezbollah milita media unit shortly afterward stated that Syrian air defenses intercepted three missiles that targeted the Dumayr airport in northeast Damascus. Reports of that attack had been swirling on social media before the announcement.

Syrian news agency SANA stated that “Syrian air defense shot down missiles which violated airspace over Homs.” The agency did not indicate the source of the strike, but later said no casualties or material damage had been reported as a result of it. Social media reports are pointing the finger at Israel for the strikes.
“There is no US military activity in that area at this time,” Eric Pahond, a Pentagon spokesman said when asked about the strike in Homs. “We do not have additional details to provide.”
A local reporter for The Arab News said Israeli warplanes were spotted in Syrian airspace just before the missiles were reported.

According to the reporter, missiles crossed into Syria through Lebanon.”
Sounds like israel failed again. Definitely past time to bolster Lebanon’s/Hezbollah’s AD defenses.

Yes, this briefing by General Konashenkov makes sense. Why on earth would the US, UK and France use 103 missiles to hit a couple of buildings. Obviously there were more targets. And obviously the Pentagon knew that not all the missiles would make it, bearing in mind what happened with that US Navy attack in 2017.
Although General Konashenkov does not state it, I think that the Russians almost certainly used the Khibir electronics jamming system, like they did in 2017.
Now the Pentagon and NATO know the efficiency of Russian high tech. What must be humiliating for the Pentagon is the fact that so many missiles were hit with basically old missile systems from the Soviet period. Yes, they were upgraded, but even so. I presume the Pentagon and NATO must be wondering what the S-300, S-400 and S-500 missile systems can do.
I was serving in the Soviet army (1983-1985) in air defense forces. During training firing at the training ground we’ve knocked down the missile with similar characteristics. The main problem is to find it. But when the battery receives a proper target designation there is no problem to hit the missile.
In Syrian case, I suppose, the target detection and designation was made mainly by Russian A-50 aircraft.
They may have used the Khibir system, but I would rather think about them using the HPMW system, which would seem more relevant in that situation.
