The ‘Kemalist consensus’ was that modernism was tied to secularism and the army traditionally enforced that secularism (but not necessarily Democracy). Erdogan broke that consensus by rebuilding the Turkish economy. Secularism is no longer seen as a sine qua non for modernism. Erdogan is a strong Islamist, but given his ambitions to dominate the area, it’s hard to tell if his Islamism is genuine or merely a politically-useful position. He also demonizes the Kurds to justify his repression. He first drove out those with in AKP party that might contest his leadership, then purged the military and is now purging the entire society. We might see a state similar to Iran but without Iran’s democratic infrastructure. His rivals for power in the area are Iran and Russia and he is turning away from Europe to make his peace with Russia at least.
Per Margolis, the coup was hatched by right-wing secularists and right-wing Islamists (Gulen group). I think one of the speakers on CrossTalk suggested this (I watched it last night so cannot recall all details).

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says last weekend’s failed military coup against the government has opened a “new era” in the country, stressing that all coup plotters would be prosecuted.
