The ‘Kemalist consensus’ was that modernism was tied to secularism and the army traditionally enforced that secularism (but not necessarily Democracy). Erdogan broke that consensus by rebuilding the Turkish economy. Secularism is no longer seen as a sine qua non for modernism. Erdogan is a strong Islamist, but given his ambitions to dominate the area, it’s hard to tell if his Islamism is genuine or merely a politically-useful position. He also demonizes the Kurds to justify his repression. He first drove out those with in AKP party that might contest his leadership, then purged the military and is now purging the entire society. We might see a state similar to Iran but without Iran’s democratic infrastructure. His rivals for power in the area are Iran and Russia and he is turning away from Europe to make his peace with Russia at least.

The Real Story Behind The Turkish Coup

Per Margolis, the coup was hatched by right-wing secularists and right-wing Islamists (Gulen group). I think one of the speakers on CrossTalk suggested this (I watched it last night so cannot recall all details).

From news out other places about Erdo, some info and even some levity.
PressTV.ir has these 2 sidebar news highlights:

Turkey to disband elite presidential guard

Gee, why would his supreme sulphurous satanic sultanic major megalomaniac mufti do that—is he going all humble, downsizing the pomp & glamor of high office maybe? Did he wake up one morning suddenly all full of righteousness & humbility?

Answer is in another top headline:
    Turkey arrests 283 presidential guards

    http://www.presstv.ir/Detail/2016/07/24/476637/Turkey-Recep-Tayyip-Erdogan
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says last weekend’s failed military coup against the government has opened a “new era” in the country, stressing that all coup plotters would be prosecuted.

“With the failure of this armed coup attempt, Turkey has entered a new era,” Erdogan said in a pre-recorded address broadcast on national television Saturday.

He described those behind the coup plot as “terrorists in military fatigues,” noting that they are all accountable to “the state, security forces and judiciary for their actions.”

PS: Just realized there could be a wave new stuff up on utube under “thug life erdogan” or some such.

Article is shown here simply for the thumbnail sketch & map reminder, in no way complete not showing the many other wet dream plans for planned oil & gas pipelines transiting syria after its destruction.
(oilprice is a known rockefeller rag, as seen strewed with neocon jingos, misdirection & lies).

Turkey under Erdogan devised a plan to build a gas pipeline from Qatar through Syria in a bid to displace Russia as the foremost provider of natural gas to Europe. Syria’s Assad disagreed with Erdogan’s plan, so Turkey helped funnel Islamic fighters into Syria through its border leading to the Syrian civil war.

    What, no news here?!!
Nobody mention the Sybil Edmonds piece yesterday 24th out about how the 3 NATO RDF Battalions in Turkey were key to the attempted coup?

TEHRAN (FNA)- Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu expressed gratitude on Monday to the Russian President for the “unconditional support” offered to Ankara during the botched coup in the country.

“Russia has offered unconditional support to us. First of all, I’d like to thank Mr. Putin and other Russian officials,” Cavusoglu said, TASS reported.

During his statement that was broadcast by Haberturk TV channel, Cavusoglu said that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan may be held in August before the G20 summit.

“This meeting will focus on removing the economic barriers and on other steps to restore bilateral relations,” the Turkish foreign minister said.
