by Ramin Mazaheri for the Saker blog
What a difference five years makes?
I wish I could report differently, but the long awaited French presidential debate was a total dud. Just like the whole election campaign was. And now, just like both candidates, too.
I wasn’t sure if I was watching Marine Le Pen or Sarkozyist candidate Valerie Pecresse, that’s how mainstream Le Pen appeared.
It was a total 180 from the 2017 debate, which was full of fireworks and a knock-down, drag-out brawl between a Rothschild banker and perhaps the continent’s best known far-right figurehead. It was over serious issues too: a Frexit vote, repudiating banker debt, possibly leaving the euro, austerity, etc.
Back then, my debate reaction column was how Le Pen clowns at debate instead of taking anti-austerity seriously. There wasn’t a quip she left unsaid, a false claim made by Macron which she let slide and a personal attack which hadn’t already been bandied about French cafes for months. She lacked moral seriousness, though – she was playing to the gallery and merely content to play the role of the joker. It was a major let down, because who else did we have in France who was going to end the Era of Austerity?
As a result she lost 2 to 1, and she expressed regret over her performance. Which is what it was – a performance – but politics is not art but morality.
In 2022 the only way I can explain what happened is this: For the past five years Le Pen has been a parliamentarian in France’s National Assembly. Prior to 2017 she was mainly hobnobbing only with far-right extremists, left-wing pariahs and various castaways who reject the mainstream’s nonsense. This is the only explanation I can give for what a radically different person she appeared to be.
She was Mutti – Germany’s mother, Angela Merkel – and not Marine. Macron was on the attack the whole night – hunched over, head in his hands, interrupting as a clinch every time Le Pen was scoring points – and Le Pen looked downright nice the entire time. She never took the bait, and she never really seemed like herself. Even on her bread and butter issue of security – on which she’s as bad as Macron – she looked like she had to fabricate some passion, finally.
Maybe the plan was for her to appear poised and presidential, to win over the centrist voter? What I saw was something similar to 2017: this is not someone who really “wants it”.
I wrote in 2017 and it still holds up – so even though it sounds strange you’ll just have to admit that the 2022 debate proves I was right. Heck, I even made it the lede sentence back then:
Unlike most Western countries, French politicians do not really do personal attacks. That sounds surprising, but they don’t even criticize each other’s programs with virulence.
The big surprise the day after the debate is how Le Pen did not attack Macron’s record, now that he actually has one and not just a program. It was really mind-boggling. It’s the advantage of every challenger and the disadvantage of every incumbent – a record.
I’ve extensively documented Macron’s record in columns, and I’m also doing so in my (currently being published in serial format) book, France’s Yellow Vests: Western Repression of the West’s Best Values, so I can say with confidence: Macron has an awful record.
I’m not going to waste time: All I can say is that Macron has proven himself totally unfit to hold public office if only via his weekly repression of the Yellow Vests. There’s much more than that, of course: corrupt ministers, inequality, authoritarianism as a way to pass laws, total rejection of transparency, etc. I’d give anyone else a chance to govern before he got second chance because you just can’t do what he did and get re-elected as a public servant.
My point is: Le Pen could have talked for the entire 2 hour and 50 minute debate just about the things which Macron has done which most voters don’t like. She didn’t.
What she did was play by that strange rule’s corollary: she talked about her program – the future, instead of the past.
Macron knows this corollary because he knows the game I have described: the final minute of his two minute summation was a bunch of seemingly-improvised pap about “protecting the children”.
People will say I’m too biased in their favor, but Le Pen only made two quick references to the Yellow Vests. (Of course Macron would never bring them up.) Why would she ignore them when every voter knows that for six months France saw blood in the streets every Saturday?
The answer: like all mainstream politicians, she disavows them, too. She won’t deign to touch them even if it will help her get elected. She’s totally on board with total suppression of them.
The Yellow Vests were right all along: Le Pen is a mainstream politician.
Even though when they first began the mainstream media insisted that they were Le Pen’s voters, they always told me they reject voting for her. I’d say what I heard from them is that 85% supported leftist Jean-Luc Melenchon and 15% supported the (pseudo) outsider Eric Zemmour. To a Vest they told me that Le Pen was part of the problem – she was a mainstream politician.
It’s a sophisticated analysis, because none of the mainstream media here sees it that way – they genuinely view Le Pen as an outsider and danger – and last night she was as mainstream as a baguette.
There was none of her outsider mentality on display in 2022, and that’s a real shame. French voters detest mainstream politics, but the mainstream is just too strong here.
The post-debate polls show that the debate didn’t sway anyone, and how could it? It was two politicians boring people with their plans on enormously broad concepts like schools, the environment, retirement, etc. All empty promises in the sky – nothing about the lives people have lived for five years. You saw what you wanted to see, because all they did was present themselves and their plans… yet again. They may as well have been in separate rooms.
And so instead of gaining a 5 point debate victory swing – as Macron did in 2017 – and making the polls deader than a dead heat, the post-debate polls are unchanged: roughly 54-46% in Macron’s favor.
Once again Le Pen blew it.
However, this time there was no illusion that she’s anything but a mainstream candidate now. She will likely only get more mainstream as the years go by. If she somehow wins it’s because enough voters say: “Boy, she really sounded sensible.” And she did – her proposals are only radical in the sense that they are pro-French sovereignty in the age of the European Union, euro and Eurogroup.
I wish I could have reported on this campaign differently because I hate to think I am depressing people, but this was simply a depressing, empty, absent and disappointing campaign. The issues at play were not at all as vital as in 2017. The debate epitomised this reality – it fit this campaign perfectly.
The reality is that in French politics the only interesting, necessary and vital movement is the Yellow Vests. However, their rebirth relies on the average person overcoming their fear of repression and re-donning the Yellow Vests.
The final vote is Sunday – which far-right mainstream candidate will win?
Ramin Mazaheri is the chief correspondent in Paris for PressTV and has lived in France since 2009. He has been a daily newspaper reporter in the US, and has reported from Iran, Cuba, Egypt, Tunisia, South Korea and elsewhere. He is the author of ‘Socialism’s Ignored Success: Iranian Islamic Socialism’ as well as ‘I’ll Ruin Everything You Are: Ending Western Propaganda on Red China’, which is also available in simplified and traditional Chinese.
Sounds like here in the UK – we get a choice of voting for the left cheek or the right cheek, but it’s the same old arse that gets in every time.
Well Ramin: to use socialist language, which I believe you can relate to, would it not be fair to say that all of Western Europe is psychologically locked into a well constructed and tightly controlled “bourgeois dictatorship?” It is a sophisticated form of well constructed mass hypnotism specifically geared to election management. Just as Mongo says in common people’s language. I wish I could say I was surprised but anything other than your sad story would have been a real surprise.
So, with all respect for your dedicated journalism, is it not a fantasy of a bygone time (for the West at least) to hold out any serious expectation of change via the ballot box? The bourgeois dictatorship is so well constructed. The art to dominating elections is not in the campaign itself but what is done to the minds of the people between campaigns. And here the ruling class have the massive advantage of media domination, and that is not even the half of it. It seems to me this deplorable French farce does a lot to reinforce the Russian justification for its Special Military Operation.
Nevertheless it is great to have you back here and read your regular posts. Don’t let this slow you down my friend. Fond regards!
Maybe you should make a bee-line for the center instead – unexplored territory – no-one will be expecting that (desperate times call for desperate measures).
These days a whole a**e would be luxury. All I see are two sides of the same sphincter!
If America’s experience with Trump is any indication of a good path forward, outsiders still ought to vote Le Penn. Let’s not forget if Hillary won in 2016 there would have been a no fly zone in Syria January 2017 and a third world war. Now in the middle of the conflict in Ukraine France has the choice between a man who has sent French military advisors into Ukraine to prepare a third world war alongside NATO or a woman who will probably be status quo with that status quo not including a third world war.
Trump wasn’t impressive either, but the whole world ought to prefer terrible politics and no nuclear war over terrible politics and nuclear war.
” if Hillary won in 2016 there would have been a no fly zone in Syria”
If Killary had won in 2016 there would have been a no fly zone in Ukraine by now.
If Killary had won none of us would be here on this blog right now.
Bingo!
That was her assignment and to be her role…
The ‘finisher’.
She was going to complete obungo’s “Fundemental Trans-Formation” of America.
The semi-sane proportion of the American electorate overcame their fraud/cheating/stealing and put trump in the whitehouse.
The population of America is damaged, traumatized, dehumanized, disoriented and partially psychotic after now six years of all out warfare against us by our so called ‘government’ in this dumpster fire called a ‘democracy’.
I feel ashamed that most Americans have been successfully trained to hate Russia.
I pray for God’s will to be done.
You have point.
I always thought in this way, alt right politicians are in most cases controlled opposition. But at least they are opposition.
They delay the “great reset”
If you ever have a choose between a really outsider anti globalist anti Atlantic candidate and a alt right candidate, choose the former .
But if the election is between representation of worst globalism and an alt right candidate, choose the last one
There are no Alt-Right politicians. The alt-right supported Trump but he was never a part of the alt-right. Funny thing Hillary actually tried tying the alt-right and Russia in one of her speeches which now seeing the Russo-sphere on the internet (you guys) I think is pretty funny considering how much Russians hate the Third Reich and how many people in the Alt-Right respect the Third Reich. Which is even funnier since the alt-right has a lot of people sympathetic to Russia in this war and always disliked Azov because they seen NATO and the CIA as enemies of the white race and Azov as a CIA NATO proxy.
One big example you can go see for yourself right now is The Daily Stormer which was a big part of the alt-right (arguably still is) which openly cheerleads for Russia in the Ukrainian war.
Anyway, Trump was a dumb boomer who didn’t get how things actually work in the west but functioned as a big wrecking ball to the system. Another thing people might remember from 2015 in America was the ebola scare, almost like there might have been a pandemic scare looming. After observing what has played out since 2020 and having memory of what was happening in 2015, I seriously think the election of Donald Trump was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Russia and China didn’t have production for hypersonic missiles at that time, they were still working that sort of thing out. There we no S-500s either, and there is probably more things that I don’t know of in Russia’s revolutionary military developments that still had not been completed at that point. Point is; if Trump wasn’t elected, Clinton would have gotten in, she would definitely have started an open war with Russia because there would have been no fear of reprisals coming in at Mach 10, and there might have been a pandemic scare. We might all be eating bugs right now at best or be living in the aftermath of a nuclear war at worst.
The moral of the story is if you are French, vote Le Penn. Le Penn might not deliver on anything she promised, just like Trump never did a damn thing either. BUT it isn’t what she will do, it’s what she won’t do. Another 5 years of sand in the gears is another 5 years of wear and tear on the system that will prove very important in the long run.
Vote Le Penn. Avoid nuclear war.
‘ Unlike most Western countries, French politicians do not really do personal attacks’ – What??? Seriously!
For as long as I remember each sitting President has orchestrated a criminal case (tax evasion, misappropriation of Public Money, Campaign Funding and the like ) against a rival only weeks before a General Election.
Mazaheri’s observations are on the mark.
Unfortunately: Nothing to see here folks. Please move on!
Not taking chances, the Zio/French media is butchering Marine Le Pen. She has received Russian Rubles-they write.
As with Brando, Marine Le Pen ‘Could have been a contender.’ If only she’d put up a fight. Haaa! What if she is allowed to win?
[In America, former Congresswoman, & Military Veteran, Tulsi Gabbard, has been accused of being a Russian Agent.]
*Where is Trotsky, calling for the workers to take up arms? Elections are controlled by the Bourgeoisie; don’t you know?
A lawyer and career politician you’d expect mainstream, especially as she’s pretty much Zionist controlled like Macron.
Still 2 failed marriages and few long term boyfriends has bound to have mellowed her in that her sexual appetite is all consuming, too much for her string of beaus. This alone should be enough to get her over the line as Macron prefers to wear diapers and be put to bed by nanny.
Anyone but Hillary was the 2016 Cry, same goes for 2022, anyone bar Macron.
I reckon she’d get along with Vlad, were she allowed too.
“I reckon she’d get along with Vlad, were she allowed too”.
The PTB would do a ‘Princes Diana-Paris Underpass’ job on her before that would be allowed to happen.
Le Pen, like Trump, is a representative of the conservative West, so obviously their criticism of the liberal West doesn’t go very far, because it is all West.
But many pro-Zone B folks are missing the main point. The main point is playing on the transatlantic divide between USA and the EU, so if Biden represents liberal West, in Europe we should bet on conservative West. And vice versa.
Elsewhere I read that “Le Pen does not like China” – that is not a problem, because a more conservative pan-European movement (even considering Russia European which I don’t but suppose so) would weaken the liberal-progressive Zeitgeist, including the Jesuit Vatican, which actively subverts meaning of communism. Therefore, Western “Trotskyism” is weakened and the PRC’s “national-socialism” is strengthened, all the while strengthening Europe-Russia and fracturing Atlantic axis.
As long as liberal = authoritarian as in liberal junta and Congress = Politburo then we’re talking,
Does she have any chance really
Socialists/Leftists will swarm to Macaroon as always..
Plus he will get the cucked Right vote.
There is no democracy in France and the oligarchy won’t let a political alternative happen. That’s why LePen is in the second round against macron, so he can win against all odds, after an abismal five years of destroying the country, of repression, of the ” je vous emmerde” attitude, because that’s her role to play.
Just like catch, it’s a show of make believe and only children, the naive and the fools can fall for it.
And now , ladies and gentlemen, get ready for the democratic smackdown !
Press TV are indeed fortunate to have Ramin as political reporter. Pity they have been wasted his time in recent years by assigning Ramin to cover such a tepid “sh*t show” (Ramin’s description) as the presidential elections in France and the U$A at a time when far more interesting an important political movements are stirring both and around his native Persia.
This is what passes as “Democracy” in the West?
Two or three globalist sock-puppets each spouting a slightly different script in placed in front of the public as their only leadership choices. Usually, the incumbent sock-puppet wins again and again. And then the incumbant sock-puppet roles out the agenda of the Fascist billionaire class such as the WEF.
This must be the “Will Of The People.” Is it not?
How does this happen? Are the voices of the public on the street such a small minority of the voting population that they make no difference at all. Why can the public not place candidates on the ballot who are not a globalist shills? Instead time after time the only choices are borderline sociopathic Fascistic dictators working for a Billionaire elite master-class who seek to urinate openly on the individual rights of the people and usher in a totalitarianism dystopia.
After each presidential election, all we can assume is that the vast majority of the French population wishes to live in a totalitarian dictatorship where the political class completely ignore the public will.
Where in the name of God are the public during this farcical elections?
Medicated, disillusioned, re-programmed and utterly Atheistic.
Le Pen is now ‘controlled opposition’ whose role is provide a foil for Macron.
But. She is cut from the same cloth. Like Bernie Sanders in the US. Her purpose to to provide legitimacy to an election which is rigged from the start.
Macron wins. Macron is meant to win. No one but Macron can win.
It is predetermined.
Only illiterate fools actually believe this is a display of “Democracy.”
“No no no – the election is real.”
No – it is not.
Sounds like someone got to her.
It seems to me that reading the French context without taking into account the international context and more specifically the Western/current world context reduces the field of interpretation. There is a terrible analogy between the media management of the election in France and that of the war in Ukraine. A propagandist hysteria would be even fairer. Never has there been such an absurd disinformation campaign. Press, TV, social networks, artists, athletes, “scientific experts”, heads of government (Poland, Germany, Portugal…), European Commission (fraud file dating back 15 years against Mr. Le Pen released between the two rounds ). It was the people of France versus the Western globalist elites. It’s a media victory, but as in Ukraine it has a price: the curtain has fallen. The naked truth begins to emerge clearly. Because despite all this media campaign, despite the threats and the insults, despite the betrayals of the left parties and the mediocrity of Marine Le Pen, despite the bribes (food tickets and false promises) 50% of French people are ready to vote against the president of big capital.
I don’t agree that the media was misled. Same thing for justice. The main organs of justice and the French media have let Macron run and will get him elected, but as in the Ukrainian conflict they have lost all credibility. Most French people no longer think that they are not objective, most French people think that they are completely complicit. Jean Lassalle can shout it on TV sets because everyone thinks so.
So it is certainly a victory, but a very short-term victory.
Another reality seems to me to emerge if we look at what is happening in France and in the West as a whole. It is the increase in the will to harm of a part of the boomers when the extinction of their generation arrives. In this sense it seems to me that we must seriously consider that a drift towards a third world war or any other apocalyptic scenario accompanying their decline is possible. These boomers don’t necessarily seem against the idea of the rest of the world going with them.
What has been happening for 2 months in France is only the reflection of what is happening more generally in the world and in the West. Big capital seems to be hastening its downfall by making disastrous decisions over the long term, as if it were going for broke. But what is all for all for a generation that is going to die.
I don’t believe this generation of big business boomers is working for the sake of their own children. Nor does it work for the good of the rest of humanity. If you look at the program in France as in the rest of the Western world, in terms of economy, society, ecology… there is no medium or long term program. After them the deluge.
Isn’t it obvious ?
Red Tillerson was Secretary Of State under Trump. When he went on his European Tour he went to France then Italy. Within a week of his visit both Le Pen and Matteo Salvini did a complete U turn on everything. They announced their change of hearts in the European press.
They were both warned off. So are now part of the problem not the solution.
This fantastic and explains what happened in Italy
https://americanaffairsjournal.org/2021/05/the-eternal-return-of-technical-government-in-italy/
Russia and China have to recognise this is a war about America and the West losing control of the world and the rules of the game have changed. Le Pen knows it.
[..’Russia and China have to recognise this is a war about America and the West losing control of the world..]
Oh but they do recognise that, very much so! This is why they’ve been rearming and building up their military power since 2014, and we can the results in the Ukraine intervention with minimal civilian casualties except those deliberately murdered by the Nazi battalions. Or what did you think the Ukraine war was all about?
Russian FM Lavrov confirmed this barely a week ago, that the war will not stop at Ukraine, and that the objective is ‘a new security architecture for Europe and the creation of a new global order based on international law’. That implies the dismantling of NATO and all its support structures like the EU, the end of US hegemony and imperialism on steroids, and the abandonment of the so called’rules based international order’.
The alternative is WW3, the Russians are ready and mean business, and will do what they need to do to achieve their objectives. Is the West ready? Hardly.
If we have learned anything, it is that if LePen was a real alternative to the status quo, she would not be in the final run-off for the presidency. She is faithfully playing her role to lose to Macron. She will be handsomely rewarded when she delivers.
The ruling elites in the West are controlled by the US.
The politicians in Europe are pawns in the game the useful idiots who don’t get on the ballot box unless they themselves can be controlled. Have signed up to the agenda.
They can destroy Le Pen and the Five Star Movement and the League in Italy whenever they like. Just like they did with Corbyn in the UK. By using the press they both own and control.
Putin could have broken up the EU all he had to do was turn the gas taps off and stop giving them important raw materials and commodities. Countries would have jumped ship and started new trade deals with Russia and stopped supporting the West in this war.
Elections in Europe are not going to do it as they are rigged.
They did destroy the Lega in Italy. They bombed the Genoan bridge ; and then Italy changed its mind and took in the “refugees” in 2015-2016.

that’s how mainstream Le Pen appeared.
Like Trump and Corbyn (and probably also Melenchon, though I don’t know much about him), Le Pen is fervently feared by the Establishment. That much is clear from the vicious attacks made on her by the media – and for many it is probably also what she has most going for her.
Therefore to play the firebrand and the wrecker would definitely play to the media’s playbook, and would likely strongly undermine her in the view of most Macron-haters who dislike Le Pen. (That’s my argument, although perhaps it could be argued both ways!)
On the contrary, playing cool, collected and reasonable would certainly tend to reassure potential reluctant voters who only want to do whatever they can to get Macron out. those are the voters who will elect Le Pen if at all, certainly not her real supporters who will vote for her anyway. This vote is going to be determined by those who dislike both candidates – I don’t see how there can be any doubt about that. (Or at least, that will determine how votes are cast, but how votes are counted is another matter because the Establishment will cheat as always).
I have no idea what is real about Le Pen and what is false (probably some of the former and certainly lots of the latter), but to me three things are certain:
1) If the establishment are desperate to trash Le Pen, then there’s got to be a lot of promise in voting for her;
2) Whatever we don’t know about Le Pen, Macron is as ultra-far-right-pro-bankster as they come, and we certainly do not know from experience that she is as bad as Macron;
3) Borrowing from “Prince Andrew” above, the Establishment are clearly so desperate to keep people afraid of Le Pen that if by some Trump-like fluke she does win the vote, “The PTB would do a ‘Princess Diana-Paris Underpass’ job on her before” she would be allowed into office.
She’s not far right, she’s dead center. The perception of the political spectrum is completely distorted today.
Solid analysis. Did watch only 3 minutes of the debate, as you say Marine chose to play it safe, perhaps as a conscious reversal of that 2017 performance.
I totally agree with you observation on this by the way ; I get the distinct feeling that Marine is performing, I wonder if she believes anything that she says. It seems she’s more in it to score a few quips and punchlines, almost like a stand-up comedian.
Her father was a natural. Although you always got the impression Jean-Marie Le Pen was also a kind of performer ; what he relished was the fight, the confrontation, and being perceived as the eternal bad boy. But he was funnier, undoubtedly.
Marine has edulcorated her message so much that indeed, it’s becoming harder and harder to distinguish her from you regular conservative politician. Even if she won, I don’t harbor much hopes she wouldn’t dutifully fall in line in the anti-Russian chorus.
Sad times really. My conviction has never varied : do not play this election game. Do not try winning, it’s as illusory as winning at the casino – the bank will always find something. Just walk away and become “an emigrate from within”.
The forces in France and EU the past 2 years will effect a change unless the French are just plain stupid.
Debate performance in this type of situation wont really matter.
Voters will ask do they want another 5 years of the same or something else that has to be better.
Viva La France !
First, I need to say that I speak french. I watched the debate. The short version is that Le Pen has just proved again she doesn’t understand simple accounting and economics.
Macron won. She was not the right opponent for him. Melonchon would have done better. Unfortunately even in France money talks in electoral campaigns.
The French shot themselves in the foot.
You may be interested in how Macron is trying to rig the vote by:
(1) shifting the April 24th duty schedule of the Gendarmes so that they cannot report to a polling station but will have to either vote by mail or electronically;
(2) Yellow Vests who have been arrested and/or incarcerated for protesting against the Macron government are forbidden to vote. Whereas, criminals will be able to vote.

I see parallels in your description of Le Pen’s approach, which I agree with btw, with your article where you deign to ignore the last 2 years of vaccines passports, vax mandates, mask wearing and all the other pseudo scientific bs that went on in France and elsewhere.
If you are going to ignore each of these totalitarian measures stripping the citizens of their rights and autonomy how you can blame Le Pen for doing the same?
If Le Pen really offered some sort of radical challenge to the either the French establishment or their globalist masters do you really think she would be allowed anywhere near the levers of power?
You are right though – she is playing a role and that role is as the sacrificial nationalist lamb to be slaughtered on the altar of the globalist elitist candidate.
Like the UK France has no alternative candidates. ‘Its all one big club and you (we) ain’t in it.’
