Hezbollah movement hailed Tuesday the Egyptian protesters who are calling for the ouster of President Hosny Mubarak.
“We salute the proud Egyptian people for their struggle … and their rejection of normalizing (relations) with Israel as well as their aspiration to freedom, independence and dignity,” Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naeem said in statement.
Hezbollah, a strong critic of the Egyptian regime, has accused Cairo of coordinating with Israel during the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip in 2008.
Angry Arab has been critical of Hizbullah and Al Manar’s “minimal” support of the Egyptians, but in fairness, I think they know Mubarak and his allies in the west are itching for a chance to paint this is an Iranian plot of some kind. They are playing it just right IMHO.
OTOH, Hamas refused to allow a solidarity demonstration in Gaza. You could argue the same reason as above, but I think they are either hedging, thinking Mubarak (or Suleiman) could survive and so don’t want to anger him, or they are just afraid of public discontent at home. After 3 years of siege, its not surprising that many just want it to end at any price.

Lysander, you are right. The worse thing that Iran, Hezbullah, and Hamas could do right now is too overtly support the movement of Egypt towards revolution. But after Friday the gloves will be off, for Sayyid Khamenei will be leading the Friday Prayers in Tehran and will almost certainly speak to this event. Then we will watch some of Iran’s regional allies follow suit.
For a university professor, angryarab is being unsophisticated for sure.
