Today I have already posted two excellent analyses of the (possibly temporary) failure of the USA to submit Iran to its will: one by Alexander Mercouris, the other by Soraya Sepahpour Ulrich. I shall not repeat their very arguments here, mainly because both see this as a conflict between the USA and Iran, whereas I see that as a conflict between Israel and Iran in which Israel attempted, but failed, to get the USA to fight on its behalf. This is also, albeit to a lesser degree, a conflict opposing the House of Saud to Iran, and the KSA is the other big loser here. But first, let us look at the real causes of this confrontation.
First and foremost, I have never accepted the theory that the reason behind this was some kind of Iranian military nuclear program. While there is no doubt that Iran has been trying to master a host of nuclear technologies for many years, and while some of them could conceivable by used for military purposes, I am absolutely convinced that the US Israel Lobby and the Neocons have used this as a pretext to trigger a confrontation between Iran and the USA. Why do I say that? For two reasons:
First, there has never been any real evidence of an Iranian military nuclear program, but even more important is the fact that Iran never had any need for nuclear weapons. A lot of anti-Iranian propaganda is directly predicated on the notion that having nuclear weapons is highly desirable, yields some big advantage, and that all nations would want to acquire them. This is utter nonsense. In reality, possessing a few nuclear devices would only turn these devices into high priority targets for destruction by the USA and/or Israel. And even if, by some miracle, the Iranians managed to hide these devices while deploying them on missiles or aircraft, using any one such device would guarantee a massive retaliation from the Empire. What is the point of having a few nukes when Israel has hundreds? Finally, the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, has declared many times that nuclear weapons are forbidden for Iran because they are un-Islamic. But we are so used to being ruled by lying politicians that we have apparently lost the ability to imagine that any leader would actually speak the truth, be guided by his conscience or, even less so, his faith. So we just dismissed it all.
Second, the threat which Iran really poses to Israel (and the KSA) is not a nuclear one – it is a civilizational one. Think of it:
Iran is an Islamic Republic and the only country on the planet which has dared to openly defy both Israel and the USA. Not only that, it also represent a radically different model of Islam than the one of the Saudi Wahabis. Iran is a country which has managed to survive a war unleashed against it by the joint efforts of the USA, the Soviet Union, France and Iraq, which prevailed against the most powerful Baathist ruler of the Middle-East, and which then proceeded to survive economically and politically in spite of decades of crippling sanctions imposed by all the industrialized countries on the planet. Furthermore, and in contrast to all the Arab and Muslim countries out there, Iran is the only one which as always truly supported the Palestinian cause and which has provided crucial backing for the most formidable national liberation movement on the planet: Hezbollah. So yes, Iran is very, very dangerous for Israel and for the Saudis.
This is why since roughly 2002 the usual cabal of US deep state actors, the Neocons, the Israel Lobby, the Israelis themselves and, of course, the Saudis have embarked on a massive campaign to force Iran to its knees and give in to totally ridiculous demands which go way beyond what the NPT mandates (note: while Iran has always been a member in good standing of the NPT, Israel has never accepted to become a member; but then, Israel is not a “rogue state” but the “only democracy in the Middle-East”, right?).
Then things began acquiring their own momentum: if the Empire and Israel had decreed that Iran must either comply or be turned into ruins (economically or militarily) then this absolutely must happen. But, of course, it did not. So breaking Iran soon became a goal in itself: to prove that nobody can defy the AngloZionists and survive. Iran, of course, not only survived but prospered. And thanks to the fantastically short-sighted policies of the USA and Israel, Iran actually managed to increase its influence in the region, especially after the US invasion of Iraq. Not only has Iran become a key player in Iraq, but thanks to the “Divine Victory” of Hezbollah against the “invincible Tsahal” in 2006 Iran also became the ally and patron of the only military force in the region to have single-handedly defeated the Zionist state.
As for the Saudis, they are terrified of this Russian-Iranian-Hezbollah coalition which, they believe, is threatening them, and their anti-Shia crusade in Bahrein, Yemen, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. The Saudis also fear the fact that Iran is the proof that an Islamic state does not have to be a backward, primitive and oppressive regime, but that Islam, modernity and people-power can coexist and be successfully combined (hence the failure of the CIA-backed Iranian elites to overthrown the Islamic Republic during the “Gucci Revolution”).
It is therefore not surprising that the Israelis and Saudis are absolutely livid at the agreement negotiated between Iran and the P5+1. For these two countries, the lifting of sanctions against Iran, even combined with the imposition of new, “mini-sanctions”, by the USA, represents the failure of over a decade of sustained anti-Iranian efforts.
This is now the 2nd time that Obama has agreed to basically exchange something against nothing: the first time around, Obama had to cancel a US attack against Syria in exchange for the (costly) destruction of utterly useless Syrian chemical weapons, and now Obama is lifting sanctions in exchange for the monitoring of a non-existent Iranian military nuclear program. The Israelis fully understand that, and it is no wonder that they hate Obama with a passion.
I sure hope that I am wrong, but I cannot conceive of the Israelis or Saudis simply accepting this situation. There is no way the Zionist and Wahabi crazies will allow Iran to successfully humiliate them and continue to prosper and grow right in their “back yard” (from their point of view, of course).
In purely military terms, neither Israel nor the KSA have what it takes to successfully attack Iran, nevermind defeating it. The Israelis were not even capable of controlling a minor Lebanese town right across their own border border (Bint Jbeil) even though they tried for 33 day. As for the insanely wealthy Saudis can’t even defeat the dirt-poor Houthis in Yemen. If anything, the KSA and Israel are the proof that neither money not expensive high-tech hardware is not what builds a strong military force. Compare them with the Iranians who are the folks who trained Hezbollah! QED.
As for the US armed forces, they are overstretched, over-committed and barely holding on to a few positions in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they don’t have what it takes to fight Iran either, at least not on the ground. And, let’s be honest here, the US armed forces are much better at organizing high-visibility “PR drives” (literally) involving a few APCS and Humvees in the Baltics, the Ukraine and Poland than at fighting a determined enemy. So even if most Presidential candidates now speak about “confronting Russia”, the reality is that the US cannot do much more than bombing a country like Serbia, and even that took the full support of NATO air forces and ended up in an abject failure (at least from the purely military point of view).
This is why the Empire will have to turn to its traditional set of dirty tricks: false flags, support for various terrorist groups, subversion of the Islamic Republic by means of the local money elites, sabotage, “human rights” campaigns (à la Neda), support for “gay rights”, arming of separatists groups, etc.
But, at least for the time being, this is a huge victory for Iran and and equally huge defeat for Israel: the poor Zionists have now been robbed of not one, but two wars they wanted so badly, and even their “success” in Libya is not enough of a consolation. I can hear the desperate oy vey shouts even from here :-)

Israel is a landed carrier in the ME. All countries that were attacked threatened to go off the US dollar. Daesh is a proxy army they will be shifted more and more to Afghanistan as the US tries to disturb the TAPI pipeline which is part of the NSR. China will defend it’s investment in this pipeline. Israel plays the role that Canada previously did in the Ukraine when Harper was PM in Canada-mouth piece. But they are a danger, a wild card who has been left the most vulnerable now for a change. They may try to start war in Lebanon again but Russia is now arming Hezbollah so good luck with that and they have a military coordination base in Jordan-Israel can only attack GAZA. If the US or Israel could turn Iran to dust they would have. That possibility grows more remote everyday especially with Russia in the area ( weren’t there some missiles shot down over the med some time ago heading in that direction) and the s-300 going into action there if it hasn’t been all along. Also, Central Asia will see more terrorist activity. As I have said before, that is all NATO has. Putin has given the New Republics the green light to respond to any attacks from Kiev. The US may try to get Europe involved in that conflict even more than they are but I would not count on it. Let’s hope if Kiev decides to go all out that they are decimated in short order. Diplomatically, Russia doesn’t want to give the EU any chance of healing from the fissures that have been created due to US marching orders, the sanctions regime and now the migrant crisis. With friends like that who needs enemies? So the New Republics will have to take Kiev “on their own” if this is necessary. Hopefully, the Ukraine army will finally split and join them in the march. As with before 9/11, the Khazarians have also wrote of and telegraphed their intent for Iran. In 2009 the Khazarian controlled coordinating institution (think-tank) The Brookings Institution published a document entitled “Which Path to Persia?,” Persia being Iran.
In it they basically discuss, in doublespeak, various scenarios for undermining and then destroying Iran. On page 39 they get to the grist of the matter, and the real plan:

Read “context,” and “rejection” as, “A false-flag pinned on the Iranians.” The plan is to induce Iran into a “deal,” and then make it appear that they “rejected” that deal. I suppose a “dirty nuke” set off on the west coast of the US with the suspected bombers’ passports, identifying them as Iran sponsored “terrorist,” found easily, and unscathed, in the wreckage will qualify as “rejection.”
Additionally, unlike prior countries invaded and slaughtered by Zion’s DC US wardog, Iran is not a little and weak country. Additionally, the Israelis have their hands full with their Palestinian genocide. As a result, the DC US will not be able to overwhelm the Iranians only with conventional military force, but will need to resort to nuclear weapons as well. Does anyone know what “Greater Israel” would refer to in practical terms? I don’t think the Jews have the manpower to administer territories populated by non-Jews. According to that story, the laundering is done by numerous fast food restaurants, gas stations and possibly other such chain facilities across the U.S. which wouldn’t have sufficient customers to keep their business running otherwise. Thus, many people get a piece of the pie for their laundry service. The main profit is redistributed behind the scenes among the stakeholders. What you say about civilization models makes a lot of sense from an information war perspective. What we perceive as reality becomes reality unless we know the facts of nature and true science.
In my religious tradition, knowledge came from faith and reason, with faith in the top slot. Now I think I had it backwards. There’s a lot of truth in religion but we need reason to sort the wheat from the chaff, all the way to the top of the mind and beyond into the mystic.
Iran is rightfully proud of its history. Sure, it was patriarchal but there are degrees of that. And we need proud warriors now more than ever. The tables have been turned as they always are. Unlike KSA, Israel is very attuned to how they are portrayed in the media and they pay attention to the public’s mood towards them, this is why they dont go on indiscriminate bombing campaigns like KSA is and everyone in Syria. Flick the media lights off for a day and Lebanon would be a pile of rubble. ISIS is a serious threat to Iran and Iran’s ground forces arent doing to well against them in Syria. Not very telling but at least it gives you a glimpse into Iran’s capabilities. It wont be an easy fight but my bet is on Israel (not even considering their nuclear capabilities).

I’m not qualified. There’s a large literature. I can think off hand of a couple of books on the oil industry, one standard, one “radical. There’s plenty on wartime strategic planning and the identification of control of Middle East oil reserves as the “Crown Jewels”. Also on the sorry history of US intervention over the last seventy years. Recently a couple of historians have published books surveying the archives on how Zionists lobbied to persuade the US Israel could be a strategic asset in controlling the oil.
Yes, Ewan, there are two over-riding forces driving US policy in the Middle East. First is control over ‘the greatest material prize in history’, ie Middle Eastern hydrocarbons. Moreover, their sale in US petro-dollars is the bedrock of US global economic hegemony, and the moves away from the petro-dollar by Iraq and Libya were important drivers of the destruction of those countries and the mass murder of their people.
The other driver is, of course, the Zionist Fifth Column, primarily loyal to Israel, who control US politics. They wish to continue Israel’s total impunity in regard to International Humanitarian Law, and the pursuit of the Oded Yinon Plan to destroy all Israel’s neighbours and smash them into powerless statelets, the better for the eventual ‘redemption’ of Eretz Yisrael, ‘from the Nile to the Euphrates’. Pure nonsense that Iran did not or does not have a nuclear weapons program. You do not install and run centrifuges in their thousands if you do not have one. Pure nonsense, too, that a few nukes against a few hundreds are useless. Israel, as everybody should be able to figure out, is so small that, say, detonating three nukes would totally suffice to destroy it: Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem. The rest would be left un-viable. Iran, for its part, does not only have Israel to worry about, but three nuclear powers in addition to that, where everyone of them sits on its doorstep: Russia to the North, Pakistan to the East, the US Navy to its South. Plus, the KSA easily has the money to buy itself nuclear weapons. Indications are that Pakistan’s nuclear weapons were financed by the KSA, which means that the KSA is actually a nuclear power in waiting. That makes for a total of no less than five (semi-)nuclear powers surrounding Iran. No other country on this planet finds itself in such a predicament. It would be crazy for Iran not to strive for nuclear weapons.
What is really going on is as follows: AngloZio did want Iran to be attacked by the USA for the known reasons and failed, so much is true. Also, Israel does feel threatened by Iranian nukes but knows that the current Iranian leadership is not crazy and can be deterred, propaganda to the contrary notwithstanding. Still, a question mark consists of what leadership might arise in the future, and whether that leadership could still be deterred. Sanctions on Iran did bit but not enough for it to really give up on its nuclear weapons program. Now, a new factor consists of Russia putting up resistance to the empire in Ukraine and Syria. This somewhat unforeseen development has led the empire to open up an economic front against Russia by letting the KSA open up the spigots to drive down the price of oil. There is a downside to that in that the domestic fracking industry gets to suffer but that can be rode out by tapping into unlimited, near-zero-interest Wall Street credit lines. And here comes the rub: To make matters worse for Russia, the Iranian card is played. Pretend to the public that their nuclear weapons program has been brought under control and, in return for that, let Iran resume selling oil, driving down the price of oil still further. As a side effect, that provides a backup in case the KSA decides to break ranks and reduce the oil flow. Russia goes along with it all because it knows that it cannot prevent the rapprochement anyway. Better to “play a constructive role”, hope for the best and get to sell some nuclear power plants and S-300s to Iran.
What we are left with is a situation where Russia and the KSA are facing down each other on the empire’s behest. Who can withstand the low price of oil longer? The Iranian part has merely been played, somewhat haphazardly, to increase the pressure and because Iran was not really budging under the sanctions anyway. Once Russia has been brought down to its knees, Iran will be back at the top of the list. If, on the other hand, a successful color revolution can be engineered in Iran prior to Russia falling, then that is OK, too. Iran falling would immediately lead to Syria falling, which would mean that Qatar could build its pipeline and deliver natural gas to Europe, replacing Russia as the main supplier. Russia would then find itself in a really deep predicament. A color revolution in Iran could consist of replacing the Mullahs by a government backed by the country’s rich elite. To maintain control, hat would necessitate putting the KSA and Iran on a permanent conflict setting against each other. The latter might be what we are actually seeing right now.

Homosexuality is not an identity variable, much less a birth-evident trait in much of the world, including Iran. That is an entirely Western notion (and far from being universally accepted, as the ever-proliferating LGBTQ alphabet soup inadvertently proves.)

That includes s****y, which must be categorized as rape, or it would not come to the attention of the authorities: someone has to report it, and there must be evidence. That won’t come from a consenting partner.

Well, what is the point for North Korea? Some people think that North Korea still stands because they have nuclear weapons. I have read such opinions on this blog. I used to think myself that having nuclear weapons should be a top priority for any country desiring to have independence.

But according to German Wikipedia (and I think we’re dealing with an unpolitical subject here), groups of Angles, Saxon, Frisians and Jutes (Denmark, Northern Germany) were hired around 440 by the Romans to defend the provincia britannica against the evil Picts (the Scotch), which the Romans had not been able to defeat. But they had indeed shown up before on the British coasts for fishing, eh raiding. So in the middle of the fifth century they arrived more systematically on the heels of the Romans invaders. Iran is the only serious nation in the region, one with real history and population. No other nation in the region has such a defined history – the Turks are invaders from Central Asia – the Israelis are Settlers who created a state postwar with US backing – the Saudis are a tribe with an oil well.
Iran has a technically competent population and a key geographical position between East and West, and the legacy of the Shah’s industrial policy (and yes he was working with South Africa on building nuclear weapons) though he did supply Israel with oil.
That alone is the problem, As Shin Beth worked to train SAVAK in suppressing dissent inside Iran the Shah was seen to be propped up by US and Israel without even the obligatory British involvement in Mid East affairs and loathing of the locals.

Iran’s winning meaning anything matters a lot on Syria than anything else. If Iran loses Syria that win mean’s little. The battle is still on going and just winning part of Syria can be looked at not a loss but it wont be as meaningful as victory. Just a Shia crescent boxed in by Sunni enemies and Israel just means they are stuck in a slow boiling cauldron. US does not look like they have given up on splitting the country just yet. Syrian endgame could begin with Aleppo
This column wrote in November that the battle for Aleppo could determine Syria’s fate. It is worth reflecting on the meaning of Aleppo for Syria and the region. Aleppo, Syria’s largest city and its commercial hub, was also known as the “city of light” for its refined people and culture. There was no real legacy of oppression in Aleppo beyond the agonies and constraints of doing business with the Assad family and its various agents and enterprises. Aleppo is not Homs, and it is not Daraa, where there are histories of popular grievances. The Assads, by design, kept it that way.
Aleppo, therefore, represents the failed promise of the terrorist and armed groups that have offered little more than Islamic law and criminality. Aleppo, which is mostly Sunni, was sold a sectarian bill of goods by the opposition. And it has been a disaster for the people of Aleppo. The Syrian government’s barrel bombs and relentless sieges added to an unbearable existence.
The tide may be turning. If the Syrian army, backed by its Iranian and Russian allies, retakes Aleppo, the city’s liberation will come by directly defeating terrorists and armed groups that are already deserting the battlefield. A government victory would be of a different order and have a different impact than the negotiated departures of besieged armed opposition forces in Homs and around Damascus. The people of Aleppo would experience a flat-out victory by the government and a defeat, and exodus, by the armed groups.
A good question is whether the Syrian army would be received as liberators by those Syrians, including Sunnis, freed from the reign of Islamic law and armed gangs. The answer might surprise those who would prefer to engage with the likes of Zahran Alloush and the “Army of Islam” (see below).
A Syrian government victory in Aleppo could be the beginning of the end of the sectarian mindset that would have been alien to the city prior to 2011. There is no more appropriate city to begin Syria’s healing. A Syrian government victory in Aleppo will make it harder to rationalize Western backing for jihadi groups who want to keep up the fight against long odds in the rest of the country. IS and al-Qaeda may prefer, over time, to begin to relocate to Libya and other countries where they can avoid the pounding from the US-led anti-IS coalition and Russian- and Iranian-backed Syrian forces. This may already be happening, and if so, it is to be cheered by those who seek a unified, secular and nonsectarian Syria, as outlined in the Vienna Communique, and as is Aleppo’s tradition.
Should the US blur lines on jihadi armed groups?
This column has warned for more than two years of the campaign to mainstream radical jihadi groups under the rubric of the “moderate” Syria opposition. This trend has done a disservice to the true secular, democratic opposition that rose against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in 2011. In November 2015, we advocated keeping Ahrar al-Sham out of the Syrian political process, despite the group’s purported influence “on the ground,” which is at least in part due to its collaboration with the al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist group. Unfortunately, Syrian democrats can’t rely on the largesse of regional patrons who don’t mind a sectarian edge to the anti-Assad military campaign. Even prominent former American diplomats are ready to welcome Ahrar al-Sham and their fellow jihadi travelers into the peace fold, as long as there is some tactical divergence with Jabhat al-Nusra and these groups are willing to “engage” with the West.
Ali Mamouri provides further evidence of the recklessness of this position with an in-depth analysis of the views of Alloush, head of the Jaish al-Islam armed group, which is part of the Syrian Islamic Front, who was killed by a Russian airstrike in Uthaya on Dec. 25.
Alloush was backed by Saudi Arabia and attended the Syrian opposition conference in Riyadh last month. He was a “visionary” in the literal sense of the word, meaning he had visions of the coming caliphate prior to an imminent “end times.” Mamouri describes an apocalyptic, anti-Shiite rant by Alloush in a 2013 video “from a place called the Palace of the 10th Umayyad Caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik, located in the city of Resafa, southwest of Raqqa, Alloush announced the re-establishment of the Umayyad caliphate in the Levant and other Muslim countries. The Umayyad had ruled the Islamic world from 661 until 750, founding an empire that stretched all the way to China. They were known for their persecution of the first Shiites, which caused the latter to despise and distance themselves from the Ummayyad. ‘We will bury the heads of impure Shiites in Najaf, God willing. The Umayyad glory will return to the Levant in spite of you,’ Alloush said in the video recording. The United States is wrestling with how to manage Ahrar al-Sham, Jaish al-Islam and other Salafi opposition groups that have collaborated or are collaborating with Jabhat al-Nusra and that advocate Islamic law in Syria. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey want these groups in the Syrian peace talks as agents of influence for a post-conflict Syria. No matter that their political objectives seem a disconnect with the principles of the ISSG’s Vienna Communique, which recognizes Syria’s “secular” character as “fundamental,” and calls for a political process leading to “inclusive, non-sectarian governance.”
On Dec. 28, Mark Toner, a US Department of State spokesman, commenting on the airstrike that killed Alloush, expressed “significant concerns” about Jaish al-Islam’s battlefield tactics but nonetheless noted that the group “has supported a political process to end the conflict and has fought against [IS]. … So the strike on Alloush and others in Jaish al-Islam and other opposition groups do, in fact, complicate efforts to bring about meaningful political negotiations and a nationwide cease-fire.”
On the one hand, there is an understandable sense of urgency about ending the war, given the conflict’s terrible costs, and a cease-fire requires dealing with forces on the ground to end the fighting. On the other hand, the radical ideologies of these groups, and their openness to collaboration with Jabhat al-Nusra, present the possibility of wolves in the fold, should peace talks ever get underway.
Mamouri concludes that “what is described as moderate in Alloush’s approach boils down to his approval of dealing with Western and regional countries and accepting their aid so as to achieve the prophecy. Meanwhile, the more radical groups, such as IS, squarely reject any dealings with these countries. Yet the difference between the two sides remains in the preliminary tactic and not in the basic principles and ultimate goals. There are different orders in Salafi jihadism, all working toward the same ultimate goal of establishing the Islamic caliphate. It is true that the means to achieve this dream differ, but they share the same ideological denominator, which is obvious in their arbitrary handling of citizens’ civil and intellectual rights. Therefore, labeling some less politically extremist groups as moderate and supporting them regardless of their ideology will eventually lead to anti-democratic practices, the abolition of human rights-related issues and freedoms and the promotion of radical trends.”
FSA leader slams US, Russia policies in Syria
Osama Abu Zeid, legal adviser for the Free Syrian Army (FSA), said the US “is gradually moving from a neutral position toward being a partner in crime as it allows Assad and his allies to kill Syrians. Scary massacres are being committed against Syrians, who have been left to starve to death under siege in the city of Madaya and [killed] by chemical weapons. Syrians are paying a high price as a result of the US policy failure in Iraq and its weakness in the Middle East in general.”
In an exclusive interview with Mohammed al-Khatieb, Abu Zeid called for a safe zone in Syria and said, “It is not required that the US send fighters on the ground. This is not what we want. What we want is for Assad to be prevented from targeting civilians and for the [supporters] of the Syrian revolution [i.e., Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia] to be allowed to provide rebels with qualitative weapons. The US supports the Syrian Democratic Forces, which include al-Sanadid Army, one of the regime’s militias. We, however, do not trust these forces, and they not surprisingly getting weapons that are hundreds of times more numerous than the weapons received by the FSA.”
Abu Zeid credits the Russian intervention with unifying many of the disparate Syrian armed groups, telling Al-Monitor, “I personally refused to meet with the Russian president’s special representative for the Middle East, Mikhail Bogdanov, in Geneva about two months ago. Perhaps, in the eyes of Russia, Assad is the commander of the Syrian revolution. Russia’s declaration that it supports the FSA is ridiculous as all facts prove the contrary. Russian airstrikes are ongoing around the clock, targeting our sites and locations. Our position is clear: We will not coordinate or cooperate with Russia.”
Abu Zeid said that the FSA and its allies are essential to defeat IS. “IS cannot be eliminated without the FSA,” said Abu Zeid. “We have a history of struggle against all of those who killed Syrians. Therefore, no one can question the FSA’s objectives when it fights IS, because its project is purely Syrian, and it aims to protect Syrians rather than serve other agendas.”
Hagel on Syria
Barbara Slavin reports this week that former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said, “We have allowed ourselves to get caught and paralyzed on our Syrian policy by the statement that ‘Assad must go,’” adding, “Assad was never our enemy.”
Speaking at the Atlantic Council in Washington, Hagel faulted President Barack Obama for declaring a “red line” against chemical weapons use by the Syrian government and then stepping back from carrying out missile strikes to enforce it in 2013, saying, “When a president of the United States says something, it means something. … To make those kinds of pronouncements and not follow through affects the credibility of the president.”

That Baltic military build up is a joke and nothing that a little sneeze from Russia’s side would need to put it to rest. It is more a means of NATO to expand it’s “Protection” Racket to the Baltics and be used in conjunction with failed Baltic regimes top keep the locals in their place.
Even Poland which was quite a strong member of the former Soviet Pact, would have major issues fielding a modern competent force that could challenge Russia. The Poles wonderful fleet of F16’s are for the most part grounded as the Gov hasn’t the funds to keep them in the air and instead rely on Soviet fighter aircraft like the Mig29’s to keep their airforce in the air.
Germany, small fleet of poor performing tanks and training that utilises broom sticks. England, mothballed services, a few aircraft still flyable and Royal Marines that get bogged down in beach landing practices. USA not much better if the recent exercises in Southern Europe are any indication. A lot of chest thumping but incompetent command and control infrastructure with a massive dose of arrogance and failing to learn from history or their own exercises, be it Somalia or the gamed Iran Naval Attacks on their Carrier Forces. Watching their Bummers, I mean Hummers get bogged down in Portugal on the beach with their beach landings gives for much entertainment and runs quite to the contrary of the narrative from Hollywood.
The only country with a capable military force in Europe is Russia of which can clearly be seen in their military exercises and how they have handled themselves from Chechnya to Syria. It would seem the only thing NATO is good at is creating Chaos through Spec Ops and Mercs and chest thumping. When push comes to shove though, they are nothing but a murderous peacock picking on small fry to bolster their psychotic egos. Hence their presence in the Baltics.

Iran’s nuclear program like N. Koreas nuclear program was designed for just one thing and 2 days ago NK repeated it again, sign a peace treaty and give up regime change and the nuclear program can be dismantled..
The old presidents close advisory gave an interview on the Iranian nuclear program and this is what he said, after trying for decades to normalize relations with the US, they only saw one way to get the US to the negotiating table. A nuclear program from the ground up and it could not be a military one as that would and might get into a war with the US and they have been quite open in what they were doing and how they were progressing, it was to cause as much pain to the US to a point where the US would come to negotiate rather than just ignore them. The US came to the table when Iran started enrichment to enough of a level to be able to create a bomb. Although they were very careful to not do any military applications like the detonation or missile projects with nuclear applications. So like 35 years after the US and Iran are normalizing relations.. It was their goal and succeeded.. Iran also knew if they failed then the pain wont go away, it would just get worse, after all, the sanctions were around for ever and it never got removed just extended and more and more added to it. The Palestinians never had leverage so Iran knew they absolutely need the leverage that the US could not ignore.
I hope this analysis is correct. However it would be shocking if anyone in Washington did anything without the approval of bankers, Tel Aviv, and master oligarchs like Sheldon Adelson and George Soros. Perhaps this is just cynicism ruling, but this deal seems like a Trojan Horse being pulled right into the Persia.

Would history of Libya, Syria, and Iraq be different if those countries had just a few nukes that could reach Paris, London, or Riyadh? Could N. Korea cut the size of its conventional forces by half if Tokyo and Seoul were within the reach of two or three of their nukes? Would the negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis had been much more constructive if the Palestinians had just one or two nukes?
Its complicated. Yes, you are right. But on the other hand it would be better if there were fewer nuclear powers than more (maybe none best of all). Russia,China,the US,and maybe India,because of their sizes I could see having to have those weapons. But the others are a waste of time and money.And the more nukes around the more danger of them being used. France’s and Britain’s are useless to them. And Israel’s and Pakistan’s are a constant danger of them being used. The only good that could come from North Korea having them is to prevent a US invasion. But for North Korea and any other country outside the main four. A good alliance system is a far better deterrent for them.

However, in this particular essay you made some points about nuclear weapons I found overly broad. You characterize as “nonsense” the “notion that having nuclear weapons is highly desirable, yields some big advantage, and that all nations would want to acquire them.”
Certainly not “all nations” or even many of them covet nuclear weapons. Still, for a technologically capable state forced into surviving under continuous threat from hostile neighbors, possession of such weapons might look very desirable.
National survival achieved in such a way, as evidenced by the Cold War MAD paradigm, might also be accurately described as a “big advantage,” by the surviving state at least.
You also asked the question, “What is the point of (Iran) having a few nukes when Israel has hundreds?”
Acknowledging that any such Iranian attack would be suicidal and hypothetically spitballing: In the event of open war, wouldn’t AngloZionist understanding of Iran’s ability to successfully target Tel Aviv or Jerusalem with at least one mid-yield nuclear device, be a decisive factor in limiting open military hostilities against them? Wouldn’t the end of Israel as a political state be the likely result, even if not right away? Globally, is it not the Russian and Chinese nuclear capabilities that ultimately stay the AngloZionists from overplaying their filthy hand?
It’s not hard to conclude that Iran’s long term survivability possibilities would be greatly enhanced if they possessed the wherewithal to irrevocably incinerate Tel Aviv. ‘Rule of the jungle’ still permeates humanity, most unfortunately, especially in the chambers of “authority.”

I’m very pleased that The Saker is one of the very few people – actually, the only one other than myself – who has clearly understood that Iran never had a “use case” for nuclear weapons and that Iran had been saying that for years.
I also am pleased to note that The Saker understands that the Israeli, Saudi and US elites will never accept Iran and will continue to seek a war in which Iran is destroyed. As I’ve said many times, that is the primary reason for the Syria crisis: to lay the military groundwork for a war with Iran.
I suggest that The Saker rethink his position on the US vs Iran, however. The US military-industrial complex absolutely does want a new decades-long war with Iran in order to continue the windfall profits they’ve been getting from the Iraq-Afghanistan (and now ISIS) wars. So it’s not just Israel vs Iran, but the US elites vs Iran as well.
Obama got his deal with Iran for one reason and one reason only: for his foreign policy “legacy” – and to avoid being blamed for starting yet another war to add to the four he has already promoted (Libya, Syria, Ukraine, and Yemen), again solely because of his desire to “look good” (at least in his own eyes.) He was ready to start a war with Syria in 2013 in pursuit of laying the military groundwork for a future Israel-US war with Iran. But he was out-maneuvered by Putin. I think at that point he decided to change his previous belligerent stance towards Iran and try to salvage something for his lame duck years.
But that changes nothing about the overall US elites stance. They still want war with Iran – and they’re going to get it sooner or later. Israel will start it once Israel can figure out how to degrade Syria and Hizballah enough to make the war relatively “cheap” for them. They might fail at that now that Russia has a hand in Syria, however. Let’s hope so.
Remember, the new crop of scum in Washington after the elections will be worse than the current crop.
