November 10, 2019 – Everyone knows about the feat of Yevgeny Rodionov. In May 1996, a Russian soldier from the Penza region near the Chechen village of Bamut was captured by militants of the field commander Ruslan Khaikhoroyev. Despite fear of punishment, he refused to betray the Orthodox faith, to remove the Christian cross from his chest. Something for which he paid the price with his life…
For many compatriots, 19 year old Yevgeny Rodionov became a symbol of honor and faithfulness. Posthumously he was awarded the Order of Courage. In his native Penza region, a monument of Yevgeny was placed.
The question of the canonization of Yevgeny Rodionov was considered. But the Commission of the Russian Orthodox Church decided that evidence of the guy’s martyrdom and the fact that he led a church life was not enough. However for many countrymen, Yevgeny, as well as residents of Serbia, revere him as a saint.
The head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Akhmatovich Kadyrov once spoke about the soldier’s feat.
– My opinion of the soldier Yevgeny Rodionov – it was a heroic act of one person. And the vile abomination of others – those who killed him,” Kadyrov said in an interview with the Islam in the Russian Federation web portal in 2007.
According to the head of the Chechen Republic, “these so-called self-proclaimed fighters for supposedly true faith, for some reason did not know or did not want to know that the Muslim religion forbids people from becoming part of Islam by threatening their life. To become a Muslim should only be voluntary, true and a deep conscious step.”
“I do not agree, and I don’t think, that veneration of Yevgeny Rodionov as a saint among Orthodox people is allegedly anti-Chechen and or anti-Muslim,” Ramzan Kadyrov noted in a conversation with journalists.
According to the head of the republic, “to create the cult of a new saint is, of course, the right and work of the Christian Orthodox Church itself, and no one has the right to meddle in their internal affairs.”
Statue of a true hero; how rare.
No, it isn’t anti Chechen. If roles were reversed, I would find a Chechen being forced to denounce himself, to the death, as venerable. Ramzan Kadyrov’s comment is appreciated and hope all within Russia’s borders move forward as brothers.
Shame people murder each other over bronze era middle eastern Shepherd superstitions which were adapted from even older and less enlightened fables.
Shame such an ernest young man lost his life over such nonsense.
Your misunderstanding of history isn’t your biggest handicap.
Ps:Thanks Saker for posting and thanks Leo for translation.
Wahhabism doesn’t come from the Bronze Age. Neither does ‘Manifest Destiny’, unless you do a little twisting. Both, in fact, and others like them, are ageless, infesting the dark recesses of perverted psyches since time immemorial.
Sbin, you are looking in the wrong direction: all these modern Wars of Religion are really Resource Wars. Religious fanatics are being manipulated by godless Anglo Zio Capitalists whose only god is Money; most terrorists in the world today are paid mercenaries of NATZO. Brutal and greedy Capitalists are behind all these attempts to destabilize Russia, Syria and many other Resource-rich Target Countries. The AZC are cynical puppet-masters behind all those “less enlightened” religious people whom you mistakenly blame because you believe you are more enlightened. Enlightenment is worth nothing unless one names the AZC puppet-masters whom nobody dares to blame.
“None are so benighted as those who mistakenly believe themselves to be enlightened” — with apologies to Goethe.
“None are so benighted as those who mistakenly believe themselves to be enlightened” —
Thank you, that is one to remember.
Benighted :
overtaken by darkness.
“a storm developed and we were forced to wait benighted near the summit”
in a state of pitiful or contemptible intellectual or moral ignorance.
“they saw themselves as bringers of culture to poor benighted peoples”
‘Naming the names’ not a place for mere mortals to wander. It take heaps of internal fortitude, and no fear of verbal martyrdom to speak the truth………………thank you for your enlightening words.
Thanatopia has used religious fanatics to destroy Arab socialism and nationalism since the WW2 alliance with the Wahhabist genocide cult, followed by the use of Shia extremists to overthrow Mossadegh in 1953, then the entire jihadist program since the mid-70s, and the horror simply rolls on and on. The USA is the patron saint of fascists, secular and clerical, throughout the world.
The USA is an occupied entity, without it, The Occupation is over…………..the rolling horror Death Cult stems from one place and one place only………………and it isn’t the USA.
To be willing to die for a sincere belief, whether right or wrong, rather than be coerced to live a shameless humiliating lie has got to be seen as one inspiring act of the human character at some level.
Though, in this instance, I disagree with the political big picture. The base & mean-spirited, twisted with bias & a constricted heart cannot comprehend heroic bravery so easily. Even the Occident saw the greatness of the Kurdish Mujahedeen, Saleheddin Ayyubi.
For me, this is tribal conflict for resources & egotism, with a superficial veneer of the rallying cry of religious cloth.
Life is complex & trying.
1. A canonization inquest seeks to determine whether an individual exhibited HEROIC FAITH HOPE & LOVE — these three virtues are linked, heroic in one means heroic in the other two.
2. From the earliest years of Christianity, a refusal to deny the Faith and consequent martyrdom was proof positive of heroic virtue in all three and entry into Heaven.
3. Therefore, Yevgeny Rodionov is in Heaven — despite what a tarnished clerical bureaucracy may say — and, like his Lord and Savior, is an intercessor for his people before the throne of God.
It is not unusual for canonization to be be preceded by popular support and veneration. So he may still be canonized by the Russian Orthodox church.
It is not up to people of this world to decide who us in heaven now and who is not.
Christ told us, to paraphrase – You who do not renounce Me in this life, I will not renounce you come the time of Judgement Day.
That is the promise.
The significance of canonization is that the heroic individual designated by the Church is officially joined to the “Communion of Saints” lead by Christ in Heaven.
Young men entering adulthood may take Yevgeny Rodionov as friend in Heaven and ask him for guidance in life. Perhaps, some priests may undertake to build mission chapels dedicated to him and encourage like singleness and purity in their preaching and confessional advice. It would be great if Russian military squads adopted Yevgeny Rodionov as a model for their own group service to country.
Moslems respect Christiians and Jews as ‘ People of the Book;. Obviously the killers here were Wahhabist vermin in the employ of the USA.
No, employed by the EU moneychangers who are stirring up all this trouble here, there and everywhere and who manipulate the US.
Rockefeller did much of what you see in USA
Funded Kissinger, funded the New World Order; Funded the Bush Tribe
Rockefeller brought Clinton to the white-house
“EU-Moneychangers” is just a clever word for BIS, but much of their power is from the creation of the Federal Reserve, which they could fall back on to force every country on earth to adopt their own central-bank ( with one BIS bank to rule them all )
Not certain, where its all ruled, NYC, Tel-Aviv, Zurich, CityOfLondon; Like all good power structures they don’t keep all the cmd&control in one location.
Most of the ‘banker wars’ since 1880’s have been about OIL, and Rockefeller ruled them all from the USA, and went on to have ten kids, who went on to become senators and governors,
Back in the founding day of anglo-zionism, it was funded by south-sea, piracy, diamonds (debeers), slavery; But the discover of OIL, cheap portable energy is when they really took control of the earth
…
It might even be said it was strategic to put BIS in switzerland, as how would you get the world to adopt central-banking if controlled by USA?
USA has been strategic by supplying the worlds mercenary army for the oil wars, back in the 1960’s we used to think that ISRAEL was just a proxy for “Rockefeller”, nobody actually thought Israel ruled, but then today, with all elected USA officials kissing the ring of Israel, who knows
….
Aren’t Wahhabist, Zionists, and satanists all of the same tribe? All seeing eye on the USD $1 bill
There would be no Wahhabist, if Rockefeller hadn’t setup the PEDO-DOLLAR with Saudi.
Remember ROCKEFELLER IS USA – RAH

How did the Wahhabist vermin landed in Chechnya? Did they spring from bottles like the Jinns of Arabian Nights?
Moslems respect Christians mostly when they meet with resistance. They respect Jews mostly because they still have the money.
The Chechnya of 1996 wasn’t todays Chechnya, It was a neglected backwater of a dying Empire. The region had many problems and it was fertile ground for Wahhabist agitators shipped in by the US, the Saudis, and UK. It would have been amazing if it hadn’t happened. They were able to take advantage of local tribal resentments and anger at a neglectful Moscow. in the mid1990’s the Russian Army was in bad shape and the slaughter of the First Chechen war followed . It wasn’t until Putin came along, the Army was somewhat improved Ramzan’s father Axmat Kadyrov wisely switched sides, backed Moscow and the insurgents were soundly defeated. Since then Chechnya has made great strides in rebuilding. Grozny is a pleasant Russian city. I’d recommend Chechnya for an interesting vacation spot. I went last year with Young Pioneer Tours and had a very good time. Even saw Ramzan at a football match in Grozny’s Axmat Stadium.
A Russian hero.
Even Stalin would be proud of him.
I am not sure if I agree with your comment. The easiest would be to refer you to the following article:
https://www.checkpointasia.net/russia-had-just-about-won-wwi-when-bolsheviks-snatched-defeat-from-the-jaws-of-victory/
Read about Stalin, among things like:
… Lamentably, the denigration of the Great War outlived the Bolshevik régime and integrated itself into Neo-Stalinist rhetoric: the Tsar “lost” the First World War, you see, while Comrade Stalin won the second one… What is more, given that they can no longer justify the Brest-Litovsk betrayal with “defending the conquests of the revolution” (who gives a damn about a revolution that led to the loss of Kiev?), Neo-Bolshevik apologetics have to assert that the war had already been lost by October 1917, and the Bolsheviks just accepted the facts on the ground. For this, they have to redouble their effort in belittling the military achievements of the Imperial Army and its home front. …”
The easiest would be to refer you to the following article:
The “article” is written by imbecile Kholmogorov who is a fringe media persona with zero background in anything–he dropped out of MSU History Department early second year because he failed. You have to have at least basic grasp of what it means to fail a history and general humanities subjects in university. Kholmogorov is not a historian nor in any way remotely educated in any issue of military history. He writes an incompetent BS which doesn’t stand any test by facts. This creep is being translated by Anatoly Karlin who is a classic Western Russophobe.
Ouch-a palpable hit, sir!
How come that any criticism of the Internationalist ‘revolution’ and any positive appreciation of pre-revolutionary Russia is taxed as “Russophobia”? And any critic is an ‘imbecile with zero-knowledge in anything’? Soviet brainwashing must have been extremely thorough, it smoothed brains.
Andrey M. as much as I respect your writings, I agree with Anon, as I must agree with what he says for I myself was a totally brainwashed young person, for whom it took many years to see through the brainwashing cloud in my head. I still have many friends, who stubbornly cling on to it and refuse to accept any arguments they refuse to see that many thousands of Greek Patriots died on both sides of the conflict because people at the head of the KKE (Greek Communist Party) did not accept negative evaluation of their military capabilities (Democratic Army as it was called) by Soviet General who was sent by Stalin to do just that evaluate their chances of success. They (top echelon of KKE) decided to slaughter tens of thousands of people and cause huge destruction instead and lose the war in the end. To finish, I’d like to add that some of my friends are still cheering for the two most destructive battles of 1949. This was like Russian 1917 redo, for those people never learn, the only difference was that in Russia (SU) they (KP) managed to rule the destroyed country with the support of not even 16% of the Soviet population so much for the Bolsheviki while it was the Mensheviki who always had the overwhelming majority. Pls, do not take me wrong, eventually SU turned things around with most success in the education system. The great scientific progress was achieved at the cost of empty stores and constant food shortages. Mind you, the US achieved it’s progress by faking their money value and enslaving the rest of the world.
This was like Russian 1917 redo
This was nothing like Russia and drawing parallels between Russia in WW I and Greece of 1949 is as valid as me trying to find symmetries between Kabuki Theater and Italian Opera. It is not my hypothesis, it is my long standing academic position–I am writing third book on this issue–that combined West, which lives in the post-truth moment since 1950s has zero real knowledge and understanding of Russia’s history of the XX Century and reduced it to a caricature. The body of overwhelming empirical evidence supporting this point exists, including the events of the last 5 years (in reality since 2008) when combined West manifested its cluelesness about Russia in the most dramatic way.
Not to argue with your comment which is correct. My point was: the actual fact of external forces pushing people of a nation to fight each other. I guess I should have said this instead of what I did. At the end of a day, the country has to borrow money to rebuild the destruction. The Greek nation is still hurting, just like the Russian those things are not forgotten as long as the people have the memory of the ones who either laid their lives willingly or simply got slaughtered. One of the slaughtered would be one of my mother’s grandfather.
I can think of a story, where (I am sure I said it before) the communists walked into a village, cut priests head off stuck it on the pole for everyone to see, then did whatever they pleased before they killed his wife and few month old baby. Do you suggest that those things did not happened in Russia? Stalin sent to Siberia and caused the death of about 120,000 Pontic (Black Sea) Greeks (men) just because they refused to denounce their Orthodoxy and become communists.

It did happen. But you should update yourself on Russian Civil War and see what atrocities were committed by so called Whites. You also have to ask a question why Reds had a much larger of the Tsarist officers fighting fro them than for Whites themselves. Not to mention the fact that White Movement was financed by the West and eventually they just imploded because of conflicting interests within themselves. As per Pontic Greeks–I am sure some were sent to GULAG, I also know that Chechens, Kalmyks and others were sent to GULAG in large numbers. Having said that, you have to look at actual GULAG numbers, especially taking into account still larger number of actual criminals (murderers, robbers, rapists etc.) who did go there completely in accordance to law. In other words they would have been imprisoned or executed equally in Stalin’s USSR, UK, USA or Indonesia. In general, the best way to deal with those facts is to operate with Zemskov’s data which was corroborated already on very numerous occasions, including by Western sources. Ask also youself a question why Memorial Society today is declared Foreign Agent entity in Russia and why, finally, the process of the so called “rehabilitation” was stopped.
Andrey M., I am not going to bother you anymore, but I would like to say that you are trying to whitewash the communists.
Yes, I am not arguing the point that others did not commit any genocides. Yes they did and we should never forget them. Unfortunately people who were in charge will never be dragged through “real” courts and punished.
I remember, when in my teenage years I used to be fluent in Russian, and as I said I read many “communist” books in Russian, One of the books was about this young Russian revolutionary fighting “those nasty Muslims in the south”. I really loved the book at the time, until my mother’s aunt returned from Tashkient, where she was sent together with 20,000 other communist “losers – I say that because they had to be whisked away after losing the war of 1947-1949, and diadia Stalin did not want them anywhere near Russian lands. My friend’s uncle was there as well. The good thing was that when some of them returned they came back with medical and engineering degrees.
Let me provide couple of links for the audience all in English:

Pontic Greeks in Soviet Union:

I am going to end with short statement about Stalin. He had a thing for Greeks because the Greeks were indigenous people in what’s called today Georgia. When you are thinking of Georgia remember Iasonas, who really was just like me Magnitis only 6000+ years older. I also remember Georgian ensemble Orera, who in my mind were nothing else but Pontic Greeks (their clothes, daggers …, except for colorful clothes)
I promise not to bother you again.
How come that any criticism of the Internationalist ‘revolution’ and any positive appreciation of pre-revolutionary Russia is taxed as “Russophobia”?
Here is an algorithm:
1. Study Operations Theory. Review the dynamics of personnel losses on opposite sides within framework of Osipov-Lanchester Model;
2. Study geopolitical realities and predictors, influencing war-economies of warring sides in WW I–a lot of statistics;
3. Open archives of Russian and German General Staffs, including but not limited to Russian General Staff Statistical Digests;
4.Study tactics, operational art and strategic planning by Russian STAVKA in 1914-1917;
5. Study and systematize combat logs of , logistical networks and density of main armaments and their maintenance in reserves and at the front line;
6. Work with memoirs of military people who actually fought and commanded in that war;
7. Arrive to the conclusions, including through analysis of a preceding catastrophic loss by Russia of Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905, including a disaster at Tsushima and how Port-Arthur was literally sold to Japaneses by Stessel.
Easy, just couple of decades (give and take few years) of being busy doing this and things will begin to get clearer. FYI, neither Kholmogorov nor Karlin have any background to do professionally any of the 7 points (there are way more than that–I just singled out most crucial) posted above because they have no skills and knowledge to do that. Kholmogorov doesn’t even have basic math which Karlin does.
In conclusion “appreciation of pre-revolutionary” Russia starts with actually loving and studying it, which neither Kholmogorov nor Karlin ever did. My most favorite book of all is War and Peace by Tolstoy, in fact I know many parts of it almost verbatim. One of my favorite other books is Port-Arthur by Stepanov which created one of the most memorable and dear to any Russian heart characters of Russian people in Russo-Japanese War. Lastly, me being a product of Soviet Navy and its arguably world’s strongest officer education and training–the universal, most inspiring and now eternal march of Soviet/Russian Navy is Varyag (BTW, written by… German stunned by heroism of Varyag).

So, please, spare me this post-truth emotion-“loaded” condescending crap. As I posted below in response to other user–combined West with the exception of few real scholars has no clue about Russia’s XX century history, mostly propaganda BS and talking points promoted in favor of Cold War expediency. Cold War 2.0 is here, the story repeats itself. So, is this short response within a ball-park or maybe it is time to admit to oneself that what one “knows” about Russia in 20th century is mostly propaganda garbage?
Does anyone have any info about what happened to terrorist that Ruslan Khaikhoroyev and his murderous gang?
tried to search the internet but to no avail …?
He was killed on 23 August 1999. Exactly 3 months and 3 years after he beheaded Evgeny Rodianov.
Evgeny Rodianov was born and died on the same day: 23 May.
Date of birth: 23 May 1977
He died on 23 May 1996. (On his 19th birthday)
I will look for the link. I just remember the dates as they were quite interesting.
Allegedly, Ruslan Khaikhoroyev was killed along with his bodyguards in a score-settling ambush by Chechen gangs on 23 August 1999.
If anyone has any links or knows differently please post.
Ok, thx for the info!
I think that the expression ‘exterminated’ better suits the Wahhabist vermin when they meet their deserved end.
`Neither her nor there. Heroic ? Yes. Saintly ? Yes. What lesson does it bring to an individual ? Now cogitate ….
This is a pain, that we and you share fighting these monsters. This one Martyr Hojaji is the most famous of our martyrs from the war against these animals in Syria. One can not but be proud of both of them, heroes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-P_QVRAWQc
A real hero, his inspiring story will make the world better in the long term
Tertullian to the Emperor….” even if you kill us remember the blood of the martyrs is the seed of Christianity”
Listening to this speech
https://vimeo.com/202279816
speaks volumes about where Evangelicalism has unfortunately lost it way.
But I’m afraid that for the church in the West a time of reckoning is coming and purification ultimately.
Indeed how many Christians in the West would be able to withstand ‘playing ball’ as this mans own father went through in Yugoslavia under communism? Sobering to say the least!
The Orthodox has much to teach the West. Few are listening?
A time of reckoning is also due the world I’m afraid as well. Jesus takes the suffering of His children extremely seriously!
Revelation 6:4-7
4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.
5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.
Back in 2005-7 I wrote, as a contributing author, a number of articles for a military magazine (in Serbia). First about ‘Devyataya rota’ (The 9th coy) or battle for hill 3234 during ‘Operation Magistral’, but also, later on, about Badaber uprising, battle for hill 776, and about Yevgeniy Rodionov, the young border guard. I was the first to disclose these heroic events to readers in Serbia who were unacquainted with them. To this date, I have been amazed and deeply moved by Yevgeniy’s courage and steadfastness.
Alas, I do not believe church will ever recognize him as a martyr and canonize him, although in opinion of many, including myself, he has deserved this many times over. The church, in general, canonizes it’s own members, especially so after Bolshevik revolution when many have been executed. Yevgeniy Rodionov would be an outstanding exception.
I thought Christians are peaceful and don’t kill Muslims in the name of their country. But that’s not true christains are terrorists they were killing others before Islam also.
