Latvia showed by its own example that the Russophobe only squeaks about the “damned Muscovites” while it still has something to eat. As soon as the food runs dry, he is immediately ready to skip to Russia, buying almost all the export rye.
When the Balts with all their strength struggled to get European integration, and even without handing out cookies and promises to try on lace panties, it was assumed by default that in the European Union it was an earthly paradise.
Right now, after a rather long period, the behavior of the same Latvians who buy rye from Russia looks very strange.
Sputnik news: “Latvia bought almost the entire export volume of Russian rye in the 2018-2019 agricultural year, which began in July. Of the 110.9 thousand tons, 88.99 thousand tons were supplied to the Baltic republic, the Rosselkhoznadzor reports.”
In this blatant step from the point of view of the Latvian “patriots”, Riga was pushed by a record crop failure that befell the local farmers.
“In Latvia this year, due to a long dry period, the rye harvest was significantly lower than the average – by 30-50%. At the same time, in 2018, an anti-record of rye crops was achieved in the last 18 years – only 5% of the total area of grain fields. Such a “double blow” compels Latvian flour millers to buy rye abroad. Due to drought, the grain harvest in Latvia in 2018, compared with 2017, is projected to be 23% less, including 33% less wheat, 30% more barley, oats 47% more, rapeseed 26% less.”
That is, if Russia did not sell grain to Latvia, then rye bread would have to be replaced with oatmeal, because the proud Baltic republic gathered an excess of oats.
A question arises: why did the Latvians, offended by the damned communist regime, decide to buy rye from Russia? After all, they are sitting in the EU, there are no internal customs barriers, the agrarian sector of the European Union, if taken as a whole, blooms and smells good. Then what is wrong? The answer is obvious – in Russia it is cheaper to buy it. European farmers work for a full-fledged euro, whereas our agricultural producers work for cheaper rubles, therefore this is clearly about economics, which as it’s known, should be saving costs.
But then the second question arises: what about political expediency? After all, all the nonsense that the Latvian authorities are doing, starting from the end of the 80s of the last century and up to the present time, is dictated solely by this expediency. What, when it comes to the stomach, the expediency doesn’t really stand in the way? Exactly like that, my friends.
No, I do not say that our farmers sold rye to the Latvians in vain. I support the domestic producers, and, of course, let them earn the money. But here I would put special prices in their place for Latvia. Yes, lower than in the EU, but not by much, but so that the benefit for the Balts would be minimal. They would still buy it anyway.
And also – our people would receive deep moral satisfaction, emphasizing that this price is specifically for those who prohibit the Russian language. But if you don’t want it, don’t take it, we have Arabs and Indians waiting in line. They will rip it from your hands.
You can’t, just can’t sell food to Russophobes at the same price as our normal partners. The Russophobe must be hungry, and he must know that this sucking feeling on an empty stomach was led by the previous tumultuous activity on the basis of hatred of Russia.
By the way, buying rye still won’t save Latvia from extinction. And when the last Latvian dies from alcoholism or goes to Britain for permanent residence in Britain, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if our so-called western “partners” concoct the myth that this cursed Moscow has changed the climate over Latvia, causing crop failures in order to cause the Baltic Holodomor. Seriously, you’ll see. After all, in Ukraine, this had such a success, so why not repeat it in the Baltics?
And the Latvian plumber will sit at his leisure and count the damage that was caused to his extinct republic and to him personally by these terrible Russians. They will next count billions, like the Estonians…
… And next, they will try to fall asleep, feeling an unpleasant movement in an empty stomach.
This Baltic nations are as Newt Gringrich claimed: “suburbs to Petersburg”, their natural partner is Russia, not Scandinavia. 1940-1950s they were in the Gulag, today emigrants in Britain. They were called the “potato-republics” 1920/30, then they made liquor, of that, and smuggled to Sweden. Today, as the “Danske bank”, they washing black-money, being a kind of “banana-republics”, better if they still, been republics in the Russian Federation. Now Sweden must change her defence strategy, when the Baltic States became Nato- members. The situation is far more worse than 1990, for both Sweden and the Baltic, because of that. The Baltic States can provoke a WW3, think their only purpose, and produce Russophobia.
“But here I would put special prices in their place for Latvia. Yes, lower than in the EU, but not by much, but so that the benefit for the Balts would be minimal. They would still buy it anyway.
And also – our people would receive deep moral satisfaction, emphasizing that this price is specifically for those who prohibit the Russian language.”
(wide grin)
“By the way, buying rye still won’t save Latvia from extinction. Well, everything bad that happens now is caused by Russians, you know…
It is interesting that all former Soviet republics that become confrontational with Russia suffer from economic decline and creeping depopulation, while those that remain friendly prosper.
grrr,
Nothing interesting there. While they have complained that Soviet Union extorted them, it was always the other way around. Soviet Union provided for them like the good parent it was. Today, while they continue with their imaginary BS, they realize their dependence on Russia.
I for my part, believe that there may be a more sinister reason for buying all the rye, but we can only speculate.
One man’s boring is another one’s interesting. Their predicament was entirely predictable (and predicted by many) and they still opted for it. It is like a macabre show where clowns flagellate themself.
”You can’t, just can’t sell food to Russophobes at the same price as our normal partners. The Russophobe must be hungry, and he must know that this sucking feeling on an empty stomach was led by the previous tumultuous activity on the basis of hatred of Russia.”
Russia’s allegedly ”normal partners” in Western Europe are equally Russophobic so a general, substantial price hike would seem to be appropriate.
”And when the last Latvian dies from alcoholism or goes to Britain for permanent residence in Britain, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if our so-called western ’partners’ concoct the myth that this cursed Moscow has changed the climate over Latvia”
No myth whatsoever, Ruslan. The looming threat of Putin darkens the skies everywhere outside Russia, causing all kinds of weird weather, LOL. Sweden’s banking sector of course has got nothing to do with the Latvian fiasco.
The other thing to mention, is that all Baltic states had a privileged, or preferential treatment before the collapse of the USSR. They had huge budgets to finance local traditions, festivals, ethnic folklore, literature, cinema etc, etc. Now, it is all gone. They’re all free to slave themselves as plumbers in their beloved Europe, while their own countries are slowly rotting into oblivion.
Latvian plumbers pick fruit in France and other EU countries. Their Latvian plumbers diplomas are not accepted by the patriotic French and they have problems with the lingo, so, picking fruit it is. OTOH the preBalts mostly all help each other getting the most out of the local social benefit systems, like free language lessons, subsidized car driving lessons, home rent aid and so on. Thus effectively draining the social systems of their host countries…
By the way, most expat Balts that I have talked to are definitely not anti Russian or russophobe. Makes you wonder.
I’ve never heard of a language being banned in a country before.Curious.While seemingly a petty act, this might actually be an attempt to create a language barrier between Russia and these countries in the long term.
anon12309846, that’s a very good point. Banning of Russian in all these countries creates communication barriers over generations and can be a serious divider.
Language banning is prevalent almost everywhere in the New Europe. During 1990s Croatians burned millions of books written in Serbian Cyrillic. They were purging their libraries of anything and everyting that smelled Serbian. Croatian bonfires of insanity. That is New Europe Today they smash street and/or signs with names of institutions written in Cyrillic.
The anti-migrant, right-wing, Republicans have at times pushed for an English-only policy in the Land of the Free. You will find a history of fights over whether public documents, election ballots etc can be translated to Spanish, and big fights over the notion of teaching Spanish speaking students in Spanish rather than putting their education back several years by making them sit in English speaking classrooms not understanding what they should be learning until they master English.
The Republicans would be highly likely to try to ban Spanish completely from the Land of the Free if they thought they could get away with it. For now they settle with trying to claim that it is vote fraud if a Spanish speaker votes because everyone knows that they are all illegals anyways.
“rather than putting their education back several years by making them sit in English speaking classrooms not understanding what they should be learning until they master English.”
Actually, there is considerable evidence that teaching students in Spanish is what sets them back, and they never really learn English and never catch up academically. Many parents of Spanish-speaking children prefer for their children to get special English classes so that they can be taught in English, not Spanish. They do not want “bilingual education” for their children.
See Ron Unz’s work on this.
https://www.unz.com/topic/bilingual-education/
While talking to my friends, who live in Canada it is my understanding that while French language is taught in all the schools, attending “French language only” schools, which are as I understand “French Immersion” actually gives these kids an unfair advantage as being fluent in French (Canadian French) opens many government doors for them.
Besides, I understand USA has about 60mln Latinos so the way I look at things this is not really to their detriment. Also, if you ever drive into NY you can enjoy “latino” music (which I like) at will, as you might think you are in Puerto Rico (no pun intended here).
Given the quality of public education in USA/Canada, being kept out of the system might be an advantage, not a detriment. People learn English easily. I bet higher percentage of Latinos in USA are fluent in English, much more than English speakers are fluent in Spanish. As for missing on education, lake I said, it is a very questionable claim.
:-)
Hiking prices for “Russophobes” creates more enemies than friends. The people generally do not have an animosity towards Russia, despite decades of Western imported, anti-Russian propaganda. You start taxing them for the actions of their elites and that changes, fast.
I get the desire to punish the scum who has been lying about and badmouthing Russia for political gain and to get petted on the head by the almighty empire. But this tactic resembles the stuff in the US playbook.
It is of course a maxim of Capitalism to gouge people who are forced to buy because of needs such as hunger. It is of course the maxim of Jesus Christ to do the opposite.
When thousands gathered to hear the Sermon on the Mount, a Capitalist with access to fish and loaves would have opened a stand selilng fish sandwiches for maximum amount possible to the hungry people. Fish sandwiches, only $25! Get them while they last! The smart capitalist would at times stop serving food to make the people fearful and anxious from the apparent shortage, then jack up the prices even more when they begin serving again.
Jesus Christ, to the eternal horror of the Capitalists, gave the fish and loaves to the hungry for free.
Notice of course that we don’t worship and honor nor set our calenders to say the number of years since the birth of Valentino, the Roman fish-sandwhich dealer who got rich by selling high priced fish sandwhiches. Being Christian and feeding the hungry foregoes the short-term profits of the price gouging Capitalist, but it has the advantage of being remembered for a long, long time afterwards.
Noble thoughts from you, so simple and so true.
Excuse me, the article clearly states that Latvia has excess oats, so they are evidently NOT starving! They can eat oatmeal or make oatneal pancakes (I have made them, they are delicious and can replace bread) When crops fail, you make do!
Why on earth people believe that Russia should subsidise the luxury of rye bread in Latvia, after how they have treated their Russian minority, is beyond me.
I totally agree with the author here. The only thing I have doubts about, is how can there be two prices for rye? Rye is a commodity and normally there is one world market price for commodities. I guess the Russian rye is cheaper due to lower logistics costs…?
There is a Hungarian saying. “God does not hit with a stick.”
The poor Latvians now have to eat russophobic bread.
good humor and by all means make the Latvian russophobes pay for Russian rye as suggested above…
Latvian budget ditty

Marvelous!
Indeed Nussiminen, indeed, good work !
Interesting…….
But I think the big story here is the weather/climate change leading to the crop changes.
This will only get worse, producing massive political problems.
Hello American midwest……. all the projections indicate a dry and hot climate developing there, and likely huge decreases in crop yields. We have not seen the end of American intervention and aggression, as it will get worse as they, and the rest of the world, face massive climate change. Hunger and war will make a big comeback to the world. It would not surprise me to see American action against Canada to secure food in the coming years.
…… If the US can avoid a civil war.
Thanks to Western geo-engineering. Particles dispersed in our skies by airplanes, the weather going crazy and people falling ill…
Sallysdad, Hello from the U.S.midwest. Yes, I agree! From my viewpoint the real “enemy” of the hegemon, and the entire world, is climate change do to global warming. I’m in rural Missouri and many of the cattle farmers here, have been cutting down trees with the hope that their cattle will forage on tree leaves as meadow grasses have dried up. I’ve also heard that the smaller local farmers have sold off cattle (at low prices) to avoid the high cost of distant hay trucked in. In the 1970s and 1980s I used to fly jet airliners coast to coast and rarely saw the jet stream south of the Dakotas. Now the jet stream wanders in undulating waves as far south as Mexico moving weather systems in ways that are changing the climate back and forth between too dry, to too wet. Most people around here, steeped in media silence about global warming and the dire consequences, believe there is nothing to worry about. I’m convinced they are very wrong.
Hi Barry.
It doesn’t give me any comfort to contemplate the hardship the US is going to go through. I spent a lot of time in the US, living among very decent people, and it was a very happy time.
It will affect Canada big time also, at least due to the massive number of ecological refugees going north, from the US and Mexico. Add to that the huge amounts of fresh water in Canada, as in Russia…. which, again, the world will need as things get hot and dry. We are so much sleepwalking to disaster. I am sad for the children and grandchildren. Climate changes appear to have set up Syria for the long conflict now going on. Political systems might not be able to handle the massive changes coming.
I agree. What I read indicates that climate change is caused by the sun. The sun is going into a hibernation, or minimum, phase. This means colder weather and more crop failures. Forget CO2. Well, we will see.
I don’t get the jocular reference to Holodomor. This was definitely a Stalinian genocide, directed not against Ukraine by Russians, but against Ukraine’s kulaks by Ukrainian aparatchiks. Stop confusing atheist USSR with Christian Russia. This only plays into the Empire’s propaganda.
The holodomor touched both Russians and Ukrainians and was indirectly caused by the West. Stalin had programmed industrial development and ordered production equipment in the West. But when delivery was due the West insisted to be paid with crop. The USSR had planned to pay with their more than ample gold reserves but the West would not hear of it. Stalin did not want to delay and ordered crop to be collected for these payments. Collection was obviously performed in a too drastic way by the people in charge, the result of which was widespread hunger and starvation.
Part of this may well have been starvation on purpose as in the case of genocide directed against the kulaks.
Industrial development for tanks and guns construction.
FYI: The agit-prop garbage about ”Holodomor”, ”Stalinian genocide”, and what-have-you is compulsory Empire propaganda which you regurgitate verbatim. Speaking of genocide, Swedish imperialism is killing off the Baltics; Stalin never did anything similar, nor was it his intention to.
Bottom line: Would it be too much to ask of the West’s 99% to start showing some respect, even admiration, for the West’s most reputable enemies, past and present?
“Swedish imperialism is killing off the Baltics;”
I have no idea what “Swedish imperialism” consists of vis-a-vis the Baltics.
I know that Sweden has aggressively dominated other Scand. countries.
What is Swedish imperialism?
Swedes were always coldhearted. They got along well with the Nazis.
But what is their more recent stance?
Aside from foolishly allowing thousands of migrants to settle in their country?
In the case of the Baltic statelets, the term ”Swedish imperialism” accurately refers to Sweden’s banking sector. The latter had successfully got rid of all government regulation and supervision legislation already by the mid-1980s. As soon as the USSR broke up, these banksters flocked to set up shop primarily in Estonia and Latvia. It was a textbook example of massive capital export aggressively promoted by one of Sweden’s most greedy, reactionary, and incompetent governments ever (Carl Bildt/Anne Wibble). The rest is history.
As regards the passage ”foolishly allowing thousands of migrants to settle in their country”, it’s not really a matter of Swedish gullibility, but of Sweden’s EU membership in general and the strong commitment to it by the business community here in particular. The working poor are back again.
Ostashko writes:
I wouldn’t be surprised at all if our so-called western “partners” concoct the myth that this cursed Moscow has changed the climate over Latvia, causing crop failures in order to cause the Baltic Holodomor. Seriously, you’ll see. After all, in Ukraine, this had such a success, so why not repeat it in the Baltics?
That’s exactly what they will do. Only Dmitry Peskov will be surprised. I’m glad Ostashko is starting to realize how they play. But what’s the counterattack? His idea is silly. “Lower prices for Russophobes”? Huh?
Get your punch in first! Clearly, NATO and the EU are trying to commit genocide against the poor, sweet, harmless, beautiful minded, blessed, liquid gold blooded people of Latvia! Clearly, this is comparable to the Nazi genocide against Jews in WW2. NATO sounds like NAZI to me. It’s the same! The world community needs to act immediately!
Just saying . . . . The hand will be bitten. Act accordingly.
Latvia has maybe partly seen reality. By far the biggest politcal movement in Latvia is the pro-Russian Socialist Harmony one, they are only stopped from power by every other party being in coalition against them. Regards Ostahko’s joke at the end about weather manipulation- I indeed think for real that this dryest, hell like summer was not natural, except it would be USA not Russia behind it. All the rain Europe usually gets fell in the far north Atlantic, Iceland was the wettest summer ever. I believe because USAF must have cloud seeded there, because along with the Canadian and UK Luftwaffe, they are always doing drills in North Atlantic. In the Vietnam war, USA used cloud seeding to create floods to destroy communist tunnels. They will have developed their technology a lot since then, there is no limits to the wickness of these people.
Mr Trump has openly declared Europe as a Foe and Mr Bannon boasts about dividing Europe and creating Pro USA puppets. There is no reason not to think USA will use all means, weather, sanctions, cyber, military etc to pressure Europe into line. USA sees destroying Europe as maybe as important as destroying Russia. Europe and Russia support their innovation sectors via state funding, USA always only uses proft seeking corporate funding. European, Russia and Chinese technology and innovation is far ahead of USA state system, which is really just a Military with a State attached, to copy the old Prussian motto.
These baltics are actually not so bad people if you get to know them, kind of like Finlanders, introverted Pagan type people. Left without the sinister Anglo influence, they would adopt pragmatic Finlandized pro Russian trade policy, yet Uncle Sam and John Bull will never allow that. These Baltics are biologically and culturally Eastern and they all know they are better off with Russia as an ally, but the Neo Fascist elite has been bought and paid by Washington, and they control all the media. Plus Baltic youths are encoraged to move to Germany and UK where the men work like slaves and where the women usually marry foreign men and stop being Eastern altogether.
Anglo Saxon power era is over, and so is their Israeli-Saudi allies. Now, its Berlin, Tehran, Moskva, Beijing ruling the world system. If suppory Anglo then you tie yourself to a sinking ship. Countries have to pick a side, we could use Mr Bush’s own words You are either For us, or Against us! More and more Europeans are picking the Eurasian side.
I will paraphrase what President Putin once said at a major conference with German businessmen. Some Germans don’t want nuclear energy, nor do they want gas. I am concerned about how you will heat up your homes. What will you use for heat, firewood? You will have to go to Siberia because Russia has firewood and Germany doesn’t.
During this brief exchange, President Putin used comedy to wake up Germany and her European partners to reality. If you don’t want Russian gas or nuclear energy, and you persist on going back to the stone age, you will still need Russian wood! He may have easily added Russian wheat and rye which is grown organically and is in high demand from Egypt, Algeria, Iran, Mexico, Brazil, and even Venezuela because of its high quality and taste.
In my opinion, Russia’s most precious resource is not oil and gas. First, it is her people who are impregnated with Russia’s history. Second, it is her immense reserve of untapped fresh water both above and below ground. Third, it is her vast amount of arable land that for many decades have never been treated with pesticide or have grown any GMO crops.
If severe drought projections hold true, then in the future, Russia’s European “partners” may have to choose whether to use the gas pipelines not for gas but for water! Or they can choose to import more Russian grain. In other words, Russia will sell you gas when your cold, sell you grain when you’re hungry, and sell you water when you’re thirsty.
The lists of commodities that are needed by the Europeans from Russia will only increase. While laughing President Putin told the Germans it doesn’t matter what you need, Russia has it. Many people in the audience laughed, but the individuals on the panel sitting beside President Putin didn’t crack a smile. They all looked visibly uncomfortable for hearing the truth spoken as a joke in a public forum.

I think the analysis is missing out one vital piece of data and that is the fact of the global weather weirding caused by global warming – anthropogenic climate chnage. Food crops are being disrupted all over the place. It’s a bit too early to come to a concluison about the 2018 harvest and its implications for 2018-19 but I suspect it is going to be noticeable.
Okay, if I may say a small joke: they must have run out of what’s called in Polish “Żytniówka – Rye Vodka”, or maybe they want to export it to Scotland or Ireland, so they can make some “Rye Whiskey”.
In the end they might want to bake some Rye Bread, the western rye bread does not even come close the village rye breads in those countries.
As I have mentioned in some other posts, last summer, I spent a bit of time in Lithuania.
The whole country is strangely empty. While being there, I was told a bunch of times that rapid depopulation of these areas is high on the agenda. The western elites want to use Baltic countries purely for militaristic purposes, and keeping these lands free of people is very important to them. Actually keeping the entire earth free of people seems to be exactly what they want. The remaining locals there are saying that every night they can hear and see huge movements of military vehicles all over the place. All highways and village roads are dotted with 5g receives (which are mostly for the use of military). Essentially, Lithuania is turned into a giant military camp that is there, obviously, not to protect the locals from the evil Russians, but to stage an attack on Russia. None cares what would happen to the Balts if such an attack is launch from their lands.
Latvia’s problem isn’t the weather but as the author correctly identifies, the regime.
I’d thought that most folk had come to realise that the man made global warming scare was a myth, the real intention behind it being the creation of a world government with huge power to control how and where people may live under the auspices of a programme called “Agenda 21”
Having realised themselves that the planet is not warming, the globalists have adopted the term “climate change” , a meaningless term since Earth’s climate has always been changing.
“Global warming” is a myth — so say 80 graphs from 58 peer-reviewed scientific papers published in 2017.”
“By “global warming” these papers don’t, of course, mean the mild warming of around 0.8 degrees Celsius that the planet has experienced since the middle of the 19th century as the world crawled out of the Little Ice Age. Pretty much everyone, alarmists and skeptics alike, is agreed on that.
All these different experts from around the world — China, Russia, Canada, the U.S., Italy, etc. — have been looking closely at different aspects of the global warming puzzle in various regions and on different timescales and come to the conclusion in irreproachable, peer-reviewed scientific ways that there is no evidence to support the global warming scare story.
Here are dozens of reputable scientists from around the world with no axe to grind collaborating on studies which all corroborate, independently and rigorously, the increasingly respectable view that “man-made global warming” just isn’t a thing.”
https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2017/06/06/delingpole-global-warming-is-myth-58-scientific-papers-2017/
Fortunately there do exist scientists with integrity and they are now speaking out against the hoax of agw.
“Over 31,000 scientists have united against the political agenda of global warming. The scientific consensus, which includes over 9,000 scientists with Ph.D.s, supports the necessity of carbon dioxide and sheds light on the agenda of global warming, which includes industrial energy rationing, central economic planning, and global taxation schemes. These scientists are now speaking out against the hoax of global warming and how global agreements to limit greenhouse gases are actually destructive to all plant and animal life on the planet.”
https://www.naturalnews.com/2017-09-21-over-31000-scientists-say-global-warming-is-a-total-hoax-now-theyre-speaking-out-against-junk-science.html
What does need addressing however is geoengineering and the weaponization of weather something no western politician will ever discuss.
I always find it amusing, if it would not be so sad, that people deny any personal responsibility by claiming that anthropogenic global warming were a myth. Frankly, I don’t care how reality turns out because the run on natural resources stays the most potent driver for war.
We should not forget that already two world wars and uncounted regional conflicts have been fought over the control of depleting resources, mostly oil, gas and rare minerals, and that a third world war is brewing. Whoever wants to consume quantities of these resources shares personal responsibility of the ensuing wars fought over their extraction.
In my opinion, whoever wants to waste these resources for short-term benefit should not have children as they will have to suffer the consequences. A drastically altered climate is among these consequences, as are a permanent scarcity of energy supply, starvation due to degradation of arable land, scarcity of drinking water, high levels of survival-driven violence, etc. pp.
Proponents of “business as usual” dismiss the need to save resources now in order to respond to future challenges. Given the human history and normal animal behavior, it is safe to predict that humanity won’t respond to the challenges in due time. Behavior will only change after disaster will have occurred. Thus, future miserable conditions are practically guaranteed.
Pals, would you care to re-upload the following short video from Russian TV talk show?
Translation is already done, but still not approved by that channel.
So, perhaps someone else publish it ?

Hello Arioch, my apologies for the late reply. To answer your question, we usually prefer not to work on videos already made by others. The Saker also wants our video translation team to avoid videos involving Solovyov, Kedmi and Satanovsky. But at the bright side, there will be another video translation released later today.
