Russia’s economy now the most diversified in the world
This report is based on Awara Accounting’s research on how the Russian economy managed in 2014 – 2016 to cope with the dual shocks of Western sanctions and the accompanying precipitous fall of the oil price.
KEY FINDINGS:
- Russia’s economy has successfully adjusted to dual shock of sanctions and oil price plunge
- Minor GDP loss of -2.3% for 3 years of sanctions will be completely recovered in 2017 with expected 2-3% growth
- Oil & gas share of GDP drops to below 10%
- Industrial production stable 2014-2016, soars in May by +5.3%
- Russia’s economy now the most diversified in the world. Exports remain relatively undiversified, but domestic production highly diversified and self-sufficient
- Debt Crisis predicted by Western pundits failed to materialize
- CB reserves intact and sovereign wealth funds solid
- Budget deficit never went below -3.9%. Tax collection soars in 2017, budget now balanced
- Oil & gas only 17% of budget revenue (2016)
- Inflation falls to near 4%
- Unemployment remains low at 5% level
- Demographic indicators reach all-time best
- Population at 146.8 million – all-time high
- Only clearly negative data: Salaries, disposable income and consumption. Retail sales down more than 10%
2014 – 2016, It wasn’t business as usual, it was war
“Yes, we must admit that the sanctions imposed on Russia by the Western powers in effect represent economic warfare. They aimed at nothing less than destroying the Russian economy with a hope of engineering mass unemployment and social chaos which would eventually lead to regime change and a new government that would succumb to Western hegemony. IMF, the Queen of Western financial institutions, boldly promised that Russia would be clobbered with a 9 % cut off its GDP[3]. There is no doubt that this IMF prediction reflected a modest assessment of what the perpetrators had been hoping to achieve.
The events in the Ukraine were merely a sought after pretext for launching the economic assault. Everything had been built up for this with increasing ferocity for at least a decade. In fact, the aforementioned fake news business media’s reporting on Russia has served this same purpose by denigrating Russia’s role in the world and the achievements of its president and people. All this as a part of a massive decade long propaganda campaign (“Russia does not produce anything” and bla bla bla).
We want to stress that there are sanctions of two types, officially enacted sanctions and unofficial sanctions. The latter have not been officially announced by any Western government but are deliberately pursued under the agenda of economic containment, itself part of the grand geopolitical strategy of Russia containment. By these measures Russian investors and exporters are actively by way of unannounced (i.e. illegal) rules hindered from entering Western markets and other global markets were those powers hold sway, and conversely Western (and other) investors are being discouraged (coerced) from certain investments into Russia. The economic containment takes many other form, too, for example, it affects Russia’s participation in global financial operations and the rubles role among global currencies. We assess that the unofficial sanctions are even more cumbersome and harmful than the official ones.
The sanctions coincided with the dramatic decline of the oil price. Hereby, it is not clear to which extent that was deliberately caused in order to augment Russia’s economic woes. Taken together the sanctions and the collapse of the oil price created a scenario which should have broken Russia’s economy. According to the narrative of the pundits, the Russian economy was set to perish under such conditions.
Considering this backdrop, the major strategic goals of Russia’s geopolitical competitors and the intended effects, this is not the time to speak about anemic nonsense. We think the occasion is rather more suitable for declaring victory. Apart for some belt-tightening on the part of the consumers nothing was achieved, there was no major dent in Russia’s economic armor. Not only was nothing achieved, but rather Russia proved right Nietzsche’s maxim: That which does not kill us makes us stronger. Yes, Russia has emerged stronger than ever after these three years of economic defense. It has now achieved the unprecedented role of a quadruple superpower: industrial superpower, agricultural superpower, military superpower and geopolitical superpower. Russia now has the world’s most self-sufficient and diversified economy capable of producing anything possibly made in the world. Russia is now for the first time in its history food self-sufficient while simultaneously exporting more food than ever.”

-That is uniquely stupid. In terms of sanctions, US would block them from selling their products to Russia in 3…2…1. Why not develop the all-domestic Il-96 further?
Not as stupid, as you think.
It’s really well thought over.
Washington supports their domestic companies, they only block the EU companies from trading with Russia.
This way they are forced to admit that MC-21 is a really great innovative aircraft, and it’s cheaper than its competitors.

-That is not true, Russia national reserve has decreased and continues to decrease under sanctions.
“The Reserve Fund, as I remember, will be used up over the next year,” deputy finance mnister Alexei Lavrov said.
International analysts agree. “At the current rate, the fund would be depleted in mid-2017, perhaps a few months later,” said Ondrej Schneider, chief economist at the Institute of International Finance.
The Reserve Fund had to be used three times so far this year to cover holes in the federal budget, most recently in August, when billions in Russian reserves of euros, dollars and pounds sterling were sold to cover a gap of 390bn rubles (£4.5 billion) in the budget. ”

Actually the opposite is true. At the end of 2015, Russia’s international reserves stood at 368,043 billion $, at the end of 2016 they stood at 377,052 billion $ and on the 31/05/2017 they stood at 405,721 billion $.

Thanks for this excellent update Scott, on this quiet (unreported in Uk media where I am) evolution of more sectors in Russia.
The sanctions have been taken extended to 2018. And it looks like the USA will be adding more with that idiot Trump emasculated by the media.
It is good to know that Russia has risen to the challenges and threats as these sanctions are going to go on and on
Trump has recently blocked the latest round of anti-Russian sanctions passed by Senate.
Thanks Scott these are always fun info on Russia.
Does Russia exploit the New Silk Road well enough? All the tasty chinese made goodies citizens of West Europe love to buy come most efficiently thru one of two China to West Europe rail routes, both of which are controlled by Russia.
If Putin had an ounce of Common Sense, he’d brand this commercial route (both) with a West Europe friendly name, and ensure that every citizen of West Europe had grateful cause to know of it. Commercial traffic from China by sea is vastly slower/more expensive by comparison.
The biggest Chinese retailer was boasting a few days ago that it would soon exceed the economy of the UK (a laughable lie in reality, since the UK is the centre of the Deep State spider’s web, with resources far in excess of those publicly admitted- but public perception is otherwise and that’s what matters). And this retailer grows by shipping increasing amounts of Chinese made goods to West Europe- and this means an amazing dependence on Russian controlled rail transport.
Russia hides all of its ‘lights’ under ‘bushels’ – a very foolish habit learnt in Soviet times. The most effective propaganda is that which speaks to the desires of those it targets. People in the West love the new age of ‘mail order’ brought about by the Internet, decentralised local delivery systems, and ‘fun’ toys from the Far East. If Russia was to make the major ‘carrier’ of these ‘toys’ a household name as famous as ‘Apple’, Russia’s perceptional stock would rocket.
Only very recently did I learn of these rail links (and older ‘northern’ route and the new ‘southern’ one)- and I literally couldn’t believe what I was reading. How can Russia miss the value of making these transport methods household names?
People love their toys. If they felt that messing with Russia would risk the delivery of them, they’d be a million times more reluctant to swallow russian demonisation propganda. But Russia has never experienced the concept of local corporate household names, and still thinks this a ‘bourgeois western affectation’.
For heaven’s sake, brand the china to w europe rail link(s) in a way that everyone gets to hear about, and everyone understands is a Russian enterprise. Even those of you determined to have Putin never to use his ‘big stick’ in Syria or Ukraine surely can’t object to commercial trumpet blowing, and Russian brand building?
PS when the zionist press talk about the ‘New Silk Road’ (travel by rail from London to China), they always omit to mention it is a ***Russian*** project – and Russia is just too foolish to understand the lost opportunity. While the rulers of the West love war, the people of the West love peace (for themselves) and commerce and the fruits of capitalism. The new rail routes move chinese electronics faster and cheaper than any other possible transport method, and Russia currently gets ***zero*** PR benefit form this.
Magnificent! This is going to be a go-to reference for me on Russian business, and my thanks too to Evgeny for his selfless production. I read Jon’s report on Russia Insider, and it is heartening indeed to see our faith rewarded with Russia’s shrugging off the western attempts to wreck it. Thanks for this informative post!
It gives me great pleasure to see Russia make these positive moves forward. Thank you for the updates Scott!
But isnt Valtra finnish ?
Yes and no. Valtra was previously Valmet Oy, a state owned company from the golden years of Finland. Then came EU, and the same lot who made the ‘anschluss’ with EU began privetising companies and every privetised company has been sold partly or totally to foreigners. Decline in industry and economy after that is of course sooner or later inevitable.
Valtra is now owned by Americans, AGCO company (who else than yanks?).
It’s possible that in Russia some tractor-factory may have produced Valtra-tractors under license, because Valtra-tractors are widely made by various countries under license.
Finnish company owned by an american, cant see why its an example of made in Russia.
John Deere is also an American tractor made in Russia, and It’s not a “Russian” tractor. It’s an American tractor made in Russia.
Now, next task is to export them
