The U.S dramatic pullout from Afghanistan must send chills down the Kosovo Albanians spines, because deep inside they know the same faith is awaiting them once Uncle Sam looses his interest for them, and they leave Bondsteele in the middle of the night without even saying good bye. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw similar drama on the Slatina Airport in Pristina when they leave …

    • dave on August 19, 2021  ·  at 4:22 pm EST/EDT

That is why Uncle Sam is going to resettle Afghans into Kosovo, just to make sure..

      • Anonymous on August 19, 2021  ·  at 5:05 pm EST/EDT

You aren’t wrong BUT I can’t wait to see the Kosovo Albanians dealing with the West’s new protected class, Afghanis. The “Kosovars” aren’t going to be happy sharing “their” land with the new interlopers. Fun times ahead in Albanian Kosovo.

        • Serbian girl on August 19, 2021  ·  at 5:47 pm EST/EDT

I doubt they will all stay there…I imagine some will be recycled by Bondsteel & ISIS, Al-Q and MEK training camps in Albania proper and then shipped out to Syria, Iraq and Iran. Kosovo Albanians are good at that.

“Kosovo is arguably the largest source of European jihadists in Syria and Iraq. With a rate of over 16 fighters per 100,000 nationals, Kosovo’s recruitment rate is more than eight times that of France and exceeds by about 60 percent even that of a failed state like Libya.”

Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo is the largest and most expensive US military base in Europe. They will not give this up so easily. There could even be an entrenchment…

“Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo is the largest and most expensive US military base in Europe.”

That is exactly why they should, and probably will abandon it soon.

Nobody chased US out of Afganistan, they simply run out of money. Without Afgan opium transfer, Bondstill became expensive liability. They won’t leave tomorrow of course, it would be too obvious.

        One year, at the most.

      • zidar on August 20, 2021  ·  at 11:37 am EST/EDT

If narcotics stop coming in from Afghanistan, Bondsteel becomes liability. They are in range of even Serbian field artilleries, but Serbs are not going to fight. Not to mention the range of Calibers from Black Sea fleet.

If they were abandoned by USA, then Albanians themselves will do a quick job of them. With USrans gone, Albanians may even start talking with Serbs about future. Let USrans melt away themselves.

        Interesting times ahead, indeed….

The main perpetrator in the destruction of Yugoslavia was again Germany and its revanchist leaders like the former NSDAP member Genscher and the supporter of Waffen-SS veterans Kohl. The German leader even openly bragged about it:
“This is a great success for us and for German politics”
    https://archive.is/wip/zQ2bZ

UN mediator Vance called it “Genscher’s war”:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ed2E3jzwmo8&t=190

In 1992 the German FM Kinkel demanded: “Serbia must be forced to its knees!”
Like in WW2 they backed Nazi collaborators to achieve thier goal:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaXmieE5GzM

The KLA was allowed to trade drugs in Germany to finance anti-Serb terrorism:
“already in the summer of 2005, the State Offices of Criminal Investigation of Bavaria and Lower Saxony tried to convince the Federal Office of Criminal Investigation to open a centralized investigation concerning the known [Kosovo-Albanian – author’s note] clans and individuals in Germany” because “many criminal culprits from the entourage of the KLA have settled in Germany.”[7] “Yet this demand was refused, even though the Austrian Federal Office of Investigation and the Italian police strongly insisted that their German colleagues finally initiate these investigations. The rejection (…) – according to a confidential source in the Austrian Federal Office of Criminal Investigation – came straight from the Interior Ministry in Berlin.”
    http://www.german-foreign-policy.com/en/fulltext/56126

Already in 1848/49 when there was no German Reich German imperialists wanted to occupy and colonize Southeast Europe and prevent any Yugoslav state. This German colonialism and warmongering (still) is driven by centuries-old anti-Slavic racism and economic interests. The same revanchist policies are now applied against Russia, too.
“An “increased control of the emigration along the Danube to its mouth” is necessary for a “reorganization of the Donauraum” and a German “colonization” among the “Slavic tribes” (RfdN, 4: 2890f.). [ 23 ]
By the “train of millions of German settlers” to the “empty plains” of the Danube, “our Texas, our Mexico” could emerge there (RfdN, vol. 8: 5721). [ 24 ] The control of German emigration to South-Eastern Europe was also seen in the Paulskirche as an instrument for combating German pauperism. While the German emigrants escaping from mass poverty were absorbed overseas by the “predominant Anglo-American tribe”, they could remain “German” in South Eastern Europe (RfdN, vol. 8: 5863). [ 25 ]

The prevention of a Yugoslav state or a South-Eastern European federation

There was unity among the Paulskirchen delegates in the objective of preventing the emergence of a Yugoslav state or a federation of states of East and South Eastern Europe. [ 27 ] A speaker thus warned that the German part of Austria would only be incorporated into a German state,
Since, in the case of such a dissolution of Austria, a South Slavic kingdom is to be expected, which is likely to be joined by Croatia, Bosnia, Dalmatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Slavonia, and the Wendish constituents of Austria … There would be a state which could benefit us little Rather, to cut off all trade and commerce in that direction (RfdN, Vol. 4: 2773f.). [ 28 ]”

@Anonymous (the one who exposed German expansionist dreams into Slavic lands). Thank you for that exposee. I had thought “Drang nach Oste” had died with Hitler. Hence my naive surprise when Germany sprang to be the first country to recognize Croatia’s breakaway from YugoSlavia. Now all is revealed.

There were two Yugoslavia. Or even maybe three not counting the Kingdom of Yugoslavia between two world wars. The “first” one, socialist Yugoslavia was destroyed in the beginning of 1990s. In destruction of that Yugoslavia Russia as a country took part fully aligned with the West. It armed Croatian ultra nationalists throughout the civil war, it approved all the anti-Serbian resolutions in the UN and, as far as the Serbs are concerned, Russians were on the enemy side.
The “second” Yugoslavia was the remnant state formed of Serbia and Montenegro. That Yugoslavia was bombed by NATO in 1999. Even though Russia was seemingly unhappy with the “partners” in the West, it nevertheless took upon itself the role of the NATO messenger and as such threatened Serbs with cutting the gas supplies if they didn’t submit i.e. capitulate. (Chernomyrdin). The run for the Pristina airport was primarily inspired by the Russians realization that there was no role planned for them to play and that they have been treated by NATO countries not much better than the Serbs. However, Russian excursion to the Pristina airport didn’t last long as our “brother” Putin pulled the unit from there shortly thereafter leaving both Kosovo and the Serbian population to the mercy of his newfound “friend” G.W. Bush. Not unlike what he did about the same time with Cuba. The “second” Yugoslavia is the only one out of the three about which Russians and their (Serbian and other) apologists now like to talk mostly for the anti-western propaganda reasons for they did not directly take part in the bombing.
The “third” Yugoslavia was the same as the “second” one only it was called Serbia and Montenegro. This was still a viable country until 2006 when “brother” Putin decided, to finance an irregular referendum in Montenegro, and then recognize “new country” before any major western country did (only Island and Switzerland were quicker). The Late Metropolitan of Montenegro Amfilohije said: “If it wasn’t for Russia, Montenegro would never be independent”. So much about the role of our Russian “brothers” in the Balkans, the story which, for various reasons, nobody wants to tell. As a Serb I wish to thank our “brothers” for everything hoping that in the end, they did get some goodies from the “partners” as a token of appreciation for all their anti-Serbian enthusiasm and services and that they will enjoy them for many years.

          Djole,

In June 1999, Pristina airport incident took place, where Russia failed to secure its own sector. Subsequently Russian troops had to be incorporated into KFOR. This was under President Yeltsin.

In 2003, Putin withdrew Russian troops from KFOR, (probably because he did not want Russian troops under NATO command), however: Russia remained in Kosovo as part of UNMIK the UN peace keeping mission.

Russia has always supported UN SC resolution 1244 which guarantees Serbia sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Russia also supported Serbia’s initiative for presence of Serbian police in Kosovo for the safe return of refugees and protection of cultural and religious sites.

Here is an article by the same guy whose blog you linked above which basically says the same thing…

          https://milanmilenkovic.wordpress.com/2013/05/06/the-kosovo-case-as-a-matryoshka-doll-why-did-russia-withdrew-its-troops-from-kosovo/

In 2008, the US (George W) unexpectedly and unilaterally violated UNSC1244 (along with UK and France also part of SC) by recognising Kosovo independence, plunging the whole region again into crisis and instability.

Djole, I would not be mad with Russians and Putin. There were many more traitors in Serbia itself, after fall of second Yugoslavia in 1990. Quite a few my fellow Serbs were too happy to see the communists gone and wanted to get rid of the embrace of treacherous catholic and muslim brothers. I am not judging, such were the times. But Russians and Putin are the last ones to blame for what happened to Yugoslavia and Serbia.

Putin really came to power after the bombing. As for Russian people, they have sent plenty of volunteers to fight on Serbian side. Don’t be so bitter with Russian brothers. At those times, Russia was incapable of protecting herself, let alone fighting entire NATO in Serbia. Even now, when Russia is definitely capable of defending itself, Putin does not want to face NATO. Not because NATO has no weakness, but for NATO having no honor. Ne plasi se on njih zato sto se NATO nicega ne plasi, nego zato sto se NATO nicega ne stidi.

The wheel of fortune is turning, all the time. What was down will be up, and vice versa, and again and again.

      • jo on August 24, 2021  ·  at 8:01 pm EST/EDT

Russians (and at least one major Greek arms merchant) were arming the Croats and Muslims in the war (probably because that was where all the money and financing was, as the west was financing Croatia and the west and Islamic countries financing the Bosnian Muslims). Russian arms merchants, like Viktor Bout, as well as more official ones were selling weapons, mainly through Slovenia, which sold its own stocks of JNA weapons and then became a middleman for several other countries.
A British mercenary who fought on the Croat side (HVO and Special Forces) said there was even a Croatian island specifically set up to take deliveries (flights) of Russian arms.
Russia gave its vote for the ICTY political court, and later did it expend much real effort to put an end to it or expose its crimes and lies. Russia also went along with the anti-Serb sanctions, and didn’t use its veto power against the U.S./Brit/NATO bombings of Bosnian Serbs in 1994 and 1995.

This also from Serbian friends of Russia:

Heroes: RUSSIAN LIFE FOR KOSOVO AND METOHIA!
We reveal a little-known story about a volunteer from Khabarovsk Bulakh Vitaly Glebovich.
Russian, who gave his life for Serbian Kosovo and Metohija.
A Russian officer died on May 19 in the Koshar area and his body still has not been found or transferred to Serbian authorities or his family, although there are records of his abuse. Alice’s daughter told terrorists: All those who killed and ridiculed my father were burning in hell. In 1999, not only the Serbs heroically protected Kosovo and Metohija from Albanian terrorists of OAC and NATO. One of the heroes Serbia has not yet thanked as it deserves is Russian officer Bulah Glebovich. His body remained in Koshar and still not found.
Bulah Vitaly Glebovich was born on May 2, 1965 in the village of Smidovichi, Khabarovsky district of Russia. At 25 years old graduated from the highest military school under the Omsk Tactical Command with motorized troops. He distinguished himself in Russia during his service in Azerbaijan, when he risked his life to successfully complete the rescue operation, from which he came out with a severe concussion.
He joined the army of the then Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as a volunteer and received his first military assignment as a shooter in the 125th motorized crew. At this time, about a hundred Russian volunteers came to protect Serbia from NATO and the terrorist UAC. A volunteer from Khabarovsk died on May 19, 1999 near Koshare village near Dyakovitsa in fierce battles with Albanian terrorists. Shortly after his death, the UAC campaign machine posted on YouTube a film showing the body of a soldier in the form of the Yugoslav army, followed by the documents of the unhappy Bulach Glebovich. Bulah Vitaly Glebovich was married, leaving his daughter Alice behind. His parents, father Bulakh-Gleb and mother Valentina Petrovna, live pensioners in Khabarovsk.
Footage of the death of Bulah Vitaly Glebovich was shown several times on numerous Russian TV channels. Albanian terrorists laugh at them and ridicule a Russian hero.
For his feat in defense of the freedom of the SRU, he was awarded the Order ′′ For Merit in the field of defense and security ′′ of the first degree. The organization of war veterans from Khabarovsk and his family has for many years tried to come to pick up the remains of Bulach Vitaly Glebovich so that they could bury him with dignity. Serbian soldiers say that Russian volunteers were very capable, well trained and maximum disciplined soldiers. In almost all positions, they raised the fighting spirit of the boys and tried to sound positive, especially on the days when NATO aviation was helplessly hitting Serbian positions with cluster bombs, which is prohibited by all military conventions. Three Russian volunteers were killed as volunteers in Kosovo and Metohija in 1999 Besides Bulah, Vitaly Glebovich, Fyodor Fedorovich Shulga and Sergey Ivanovich Startsev were given their heroic lives for Serbia.
There are no accurate data on the number of Russian volunteers in Kosovo and Metohija during the war of 1999 It is estimated that there were about 200. of them in different places of Kosovo in groups of 5 to 15 people. The courage of Russian volunteers became a legend, especially on the example of a sniper Albert Andzhiev from South Ossetia, who did not leave positions when he hit the enemy sniper in his right eye, but moved the rifle to the left and shot until he lost consciousness. ..
Our conscience makes us cry when the Russians cry and rejoice when the Russians rejoice. We have a big debt to Russia. A man can be indebted to a man, people can be indebaned to people. But the debt to which Russia ordered the Serbian people in 1914 is so huge that neither centuries nor generations can return them. It is a duty of love that is blind to death, saving your neighbor. There is no greater love than giving life for friends – these are the words of Christ. The Russian king and the Russian people who are not ready to enter into a war to protect Serbia, could not help but know that they were going to die. But the love of Russians for their brothers did not depart from danger and they were not afraid of death.
It was like this in the beginning of the century and so until the end, sad 90 s, may they have eternal glory and praise.
            Vitaly Glebovich Bulah

@ Anonymous and Đole… very interesting comments, thanks a lot!

Although I did read much about the destruction of Yugoslavia while it was happening and have read a lot more since, I had completely forgotten about the sordid role the Russian government had been playing in all of this at the time. And it makes one wonder… had it not been for the sheer arrogance, incompetence, cultural prejudice and anti-Russian racism of the western elites, we’d probably still have a G8 and Russia would possibly be a nato member. It certainly wasn’t for lack of enthusiasm on the Russian side, where there were (and still are) many who would have preferred a western integration of Russia. I’m glad we don’t live in that kind of world now!

Gasic and Hammond are on point. Seen in a bigger context, Yugoslavia was the first European country (outside Russia) that fell victim to the break-up of the USSR and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact. It’s also interesting to note that up to its assault on Serbia, NATO hadn’t sanctioned any bombing campaigns anywhere on the planet. The West’s undisputed victory in the Cold War unleashed the urge to genocidal violence deep inside its power Elites. On this basis, their fury upon NATO’s stunning defeat in Afghanistan makes perfect sense as it calls into question both the durability and the very legitimacy of its previous land-grabs like in Yugoslavia.

    Serbian Girl,

You know I admire your terrific contributions, always well written and concise. I greatly value your active participation.

With all do respect, your denouncement of Djole’s assertions are incorrect. NO one here, at the vineyard, has demonstrated a better understanding of Serbian history, both ancient and modern, than the much maligned Djole. His historical knowledge and historical analyses, far surpass the rest of us. I think I’m well positioned to make such a declaration ;)

I myself have criticized and called out Djole’s occasional combative tone. Reacting harshly when his defensive posture turns aggressive when confronted by a barrage of ill informed commenters and moderation. I will never condone unfounded attacks by Djole or anyone else that questions the Sakers’ unwavering support for the plight of Serbian people. The Saker’s commitment to the truth and his love for his brothers and sisters should never be up for debate. All Serbs should support Andrei, however possible.

There’s definitely a different community standard applied to Djole or the irreplaceable Ken Leslie, because they offend the trolls, irrational sycophants and etiquette crusaders . We are tied to the ethnic Russians by familial blood and as the true origins of “Slavic” Russians is exposed, that familial bond should strengthen the love between the people and consolidate the geopolitical interests of the two Nations. There’s also a proper way to educate the throngs of naive Serbs and others, to the very real damage Russia has inflicted to Serbian interests, over last few centuries.

Let me absolutely stress this point; That in no way should diminish the multitude of help and support Russia has provided to Serbia throughout the centuries. But we must be honest and share factual dialogue, if there is to be a successful future. Unfortunately, German influence in Russia and later the Bolsheviks have purposefully kept most Russians from learning about their ties to Serbia and the enormous sacrifices Serbia has made to protect their eastern brethren.

Regardless of any geopolitical motivations, had it not been for the Saintly, martyred last tsar, Serbia would be even smaller and less Serbian, than it is today. Without Russian sacrifices, the Serbian identity, which has survived for at least three millennia, would be in even greater peril of extinction.

How do we navigate the centuries to come? I cannot answer that biggie. But I can assure you, we must learn from mistakes made throughout our history. Have a meaningful and truthful discussion of the realities from the past and present. And do everything in our power to help foster a comprehensive, beneficial partnership. That kind of partnership can only be based on the truth.

    Puno Pozdrav!

Apologies for the poorly written reply. Trying to work and type out something on the phone at the same time. I’m still trying to master walking and chewing gum, in tandem

      Epithet,
I have myself agreed with Djole on some occasions (eg with internal Serbian affairs), and I agree that Russia historically, Russia has been unreliable ally.

I also feel that Djole’s strong anti-Russian stance lacks objectivity and geopolitical context.

In the above comments he implies that Putin’s pulling of Russian troops from KFOR is a sign of hostility towards Serbia. In fact, Putin inherited a terrible situation from Yeltsin in Kosovo. In a post 9/11 & with US troops in Afghanistan , having those troops as part of NATO KFOR in Kosovo was untenable, IMHO.

We are free to disagree. We all only represent our own views. Noone here speaks on behalf of all the Serbian people…

Wait….. I don’t speak for all Serbs?….darn it all, haha
Kidding aside, absolutely! Ask a thousand Serbs for their opinion and you’ll get 10,000 different answers. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. I just hope that one day we respect the differences enough to harness such immense passion and do what’s best for the people and country. Less blah blah opinion talk, more action.

Thank you for the reply, dear SG

NATO bombed Serbia and Monte Negro…not Yugoslavia.
    Monte Negro bombing was symbolic.
    Serbia was atacked really bad
Not Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia did not exist when that happened.
Yugoslavia contained 6 republics. Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Monte Negro, Serbia. When NATO attacked Serbia and Monte Negro were still together, called offIcially Yugoslavia. Bit it was not real Yugoslavia.

It’s odd that although introspection, taking responsibility, repentance, and humility are the rock of Orthodoxy, many people in Orthodox countries have made blaming others for all their ills a culture!

What a stupid comment! Are you not old enough to understand that blaming others for your own mistakes is common to ALL humans irrespective of their religions? Also, the Orthodox Church is not an elite club of saints, but a “hospital for sinners” so why would anybody be surprised to find sinners there to begin with?
Your comment reflects your total ignorance of Orthodoxy.
And you are probably too dull to understand that and too cowardly to apologize.
And you post that stupid nonsense under the alias “salaam”?
    Shame on you!
    The Saker

All the problems that have befallen Orthodox countries over the ages are a result of lacking repentance and forgetting God. When the Serbian (Russian, Greek, Ethiopian,…) people repent their problems will be over.

Actually, here I FULLY agree with you, but for reasons you cannot comprehend. But hey, this is this rare case when I broken clock shows the correct time I suppose

Saker, I think you misunderstand and misjudge me.

I am an Orthodox Christian myself and the worst of sinners. We are not all saints but we’re supposed to sometimes exhort each other to be saints. That was my purpose – to exhort us to focus more on repentance than our human ‘enemies’.

Perhaps I did not write well, perhaps I wrote out of frustration and judgement, perhaps in my sinfulness I have no business exhorting others, I don’t know.

I do know that as an Ethiopian facing a full on war from the West, I just wish we could spend more time looking back at what we did to cause this mess and learn from it so that it (perhaps) doesn’t happen again.

Salaam is my real name, you have my real email, and I publicly apologize for venting my frustration.
