This is the third time in less than a year that I am writing about the Russian efforts to secure the Russian Arctic zone (see here and here). This time, however, I can share with you a very interesting video made by the Russian military’s TV channel which shows how the Russians now openly advertise their efforts and successes. Thanks to Alena Scarecrow for translating and subtitling this one!
Enjoy a most interesting video!

I wasn’t really sure what those dark dots were in the film during the time the narrator was talking about Polar Bears….were they dogs ? I think they should have some Caucasian Shepherds there….they have a coat that could take that weather…
I wouldn’t mind being a Russian living up there…but….
I’m just wondering how vulnerable these stations are….perhaps they even have military protection, by war jets and so forth…?
so I guess the ‘garrisons’ are strictly for military protection of the Arctic ? That’s their only reason for being there ? I suppose there might be research and also, living quarters for the oil industry personnel ?
This far north, not much point in jet fighters. If attacked it is because WW3 is started and the early warning radars of this site are being taken out. Russia and the world will have bigger things to worry about than the couple hundred personal at this site.
I guess they could have Su-35 intercept US Airforce SAC patrols, just like Canada and the US intercept Tu-95s on sovereignty patrols near Canadian and US territory. Though I don’t think SAC does Arctic patrols near Russian territory.
But but but … this can’t be true!
My Dutch state 8 o’clock news keeps saying that Russia is backwards and bankrupt and about to implode. And how can Russia have the manpower for this when their women don’t have babies and the men are drunk 24/7?
My Dutch government would never lie to me. My government is humanist and for the betterment of mankind. They clearly state this.
I also read in a magazine, with a very good lay-out and hip logo, that the few resources the Ruskies have are now tight up in Syria where they help to keep a blood thirsty tyrant in power via the bombings of hospitals. Admiral Kirby said this you know? When you cannot trust a American (!) Admiral, who can you trust?
Surely not Putin. This man has stolen more than 42 billion from the Russian treasury, the Telegraph (from London) reported.
So you can see that Russia cannot claim parts of the polar region: no money. The little project shown in this video is probably the construction of a hotel for Chinese tourists with a impressive looking tour guide with a furry hat.
And by the way, Russia shouldn’t rely on Chinese money when it comes to opposing the glorious West since the Chines are nothing without access to the Great Western Consumer Market.
I take it your last paragraph wasn’t part of your sarcasm…
So you’re saying Russia should shut out china like your government is shutting out Russia now? did you even read what you wrote? I cant work out if your double standard is politically or racially motivated… either way its moronic.
Where the Russian and Chinese interests are in alignment, it’d be stupid for the parties to not cooperate and by extension for Russia to take the money (assuming its actually happening).
I’m sorry that I suck at sarcasm.
Hah I thought it was good! I had a good laugh. Maybe I appreciate Dutch humour more.
There is a medical condition wherein people can’t detect sarcasm, but forgot the name for it.
“It is the only capital construction in the world carried out at 80°N latitude”
Nope:
Canadian Forces Base Alert, 82°30’N, up to 215 personal, average February low -37°C, it is the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world.
Franze Josef Land, 82°00N, Average February low -26.5°C.
Alert is probably Canada’s most top secret facility, anything more secret and you wouldn’t even know about it. Google earth, bing, blur the base out, good luck finding any photos though I have seen a few. There was a made for TV movie in the 1990s made about a rescue operation after a plane crash there called “Ordeal in the Arctic”. As I understand it there is not much of an airbase there, an unpaved gravel strip for STOL transports. It is used for SIGNIT and meteorological research.
