oh my God that second one – the words – are so beautiful – thanks Saker – its so important to know the words – even though I’ve been listening to Russian songs for years now – they’re so beautiful even without the words – but those words.
Of course there are these other faces of Mother Russia not so beautiful at all. Don’t foolishly believe that all west is decadence and all Russia – ah so pure, noble and Orthodox.
The difference is not in the people
It is in their values, ideals and ethos
Example: in the West, femininity is despised, in Russia it is deeply revered and admired.
This is a civilizational difference.
This is why Russia is not “European” (in the civilizational sense, not geographically)
The Saker
”In the West, the old has been discarded for modern trash.”
That was precisely the aim of the CIA’s Congress for Cultural Freedom back in the 1950s, promoting hedonism and infantilism as ”liberation”. John Wayne and Jackson Pollock were eulogised as advanced artists (not kidding). Pussy Riot fits this template very well indeed.
I noticed even country singers in the US often express themselves in verses of being high under drugs. So for the Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll to rap culture. Even the more traditional reflects hedonism, narcissism, and violence. This style has spread to every nation, unfortunately… Thankfully, there is still good in the world.
Here is some good news, Andrew: I talk to young “kids” (twenty-something’s) who actually like the old better than the new! I’ve read that the trash culture has regrettably pretty much spread worldwide — but one of the blessings of YouTube is that we can listen to music from all over , traditional as well as modern, and much of it is beautiful. Just for fun, ‘google’ Persian Classical Love songs, and you’ll be blown away. in a good way.
I disagree. It’s a question of time not place, and no significant “civilizational difference”. Until quite recently, before this aggressive form of feminism, femininity was also appreciated in the West. Unfortunately this trend is spreading from the West everywhere. Sure it would be nice if the West rediscovered its once own values, ideals and ethos. Or even imported what you now term as “Russian” values.
A proper assessment would be that most of the West is decadent while most of Russia is not. This is evident by comparing their respective governments. Putin towers as one of the best Russian leaders ever, heads and shoulders above the West’s mental and moral midgets.
One of the better descriptions I ever heard about Russian women is perfume and lace wrapped around spring steel.
There is no ‘dress down Friday’ here, and my wife wouldn’t dream of walking down to the bread shop without combing her well below her waist hair, putting on a little makeup and dressing properly. It is a different culture here and will not change, at least in my life time.
I love both songs too. Za tikhoy rekoyu by Kalina folk is one of my favorites. I am not sure, but I have seen somewhere on the internet at the time of Tu 154 crash over Black Sea in December 2016 that some members of Kalina folk group were on that plain. Still sad to remember the tragedy.
Another amazing song is a little free interpretation of the song Horse by Choir Peresvet:
Fabulous musical performances! Russia should promote these genuine, beautiful, and utmost professional cultural expressions with all her might. Eurovision ”Song” Contest and Conchita Wurst represent the opposite end of the line, so to speak. Leave that to the Euro-trash.
On a humorous note, I somehow managed — unintentionally — to have the Saker’s blog posts listed with this post right above the picture of Donald Trump looking up at the ceiling (”Trump is Withdrawing From NATO”). I suppose I could take a screenshot of it and have all hell break loose: irrefutable proof of Trump’s Russian influences.
Lastly, one of my top Russian pieces of music is Cвященная война, interpreted by Елена Ваенга. Powerful and beautiful.
The singer does all the vocals, its a bit different, kinda uncomfortable, I know, as well as the lyrics being “confusing”, too.
Ticho is a comforting word used in Russia, when “quietly” repeated means be calm, a comforting term. In the context of the song above, it means a bit more, which it can.
Now was I an educated man and had been to University, I may have studied Russian and thus had the opportunity to really comprehend the words and emotions behind those songs. The first, I think was old and had the ‘real folk’ feeling, and I think if I worked on it I could transpose the tune into pipe music.
The second as mentioned was a different interpretation of the first, and the four singers again put the emotion into the song and although there was the English translation, I don’t think it did justice to the actual song.
The third with a very good and strong quartet, I think is a much later song, and sung with gusto and feeling.
These songs demonstrate the difference of music in the West where music is for Mammon rather than the heart.
For Saker and each and every one of you:
I consider this the best Australian song written in the past sixty years; “Little Boy Lost” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPjisfbL8_E

since you started with your favourite Russian songs ,
songs that cleanse one’s soul from everyday deposits ,
I would like to mention few songs that raises spirit of man , when one is found on low level of spiritual strength and endurance.
When I find myself in such state , I listen to this song :
Divna Ljubojevic Blagoslovi duse Moja Gospoda
( bless my soul , o lord )
One of strongest songs I happen to know.
That song rises spirit of man to heavenly hights , where it belongs.
Also there are situations when complete nation is in great troubles , and whole nation needs heavenly support , help reaching from heaven , in a form of song , songs with very great energies
For example :
Vostani serbie arise Serbia ( eng sub )
also this song , performed in one voice :
Мадам Пиано Востани Сербие
Madam piano vostani serbie
There is strong song , in fact anthem of Serbia :
Nathioanal anthem of Serbia god of justice
or some similar , songs by group of singers :
Србски православни појци ми смо деца неба
Србски православни појци суза косова
Србски православни појци војвода степа
Ruski kubanjski kozacki hor tamo daleko
Those couple of songs shows something of spirit of Serbian people when found in difficult situations through history.
( post scriptum :
I mentioned names of some songs , that could be used as keywords , typed in YouTube line ,
Since now I use this android toy phone ,
and do not know how to copy YouTube address line into text of reply

And third song you mention , have that own strength. Especially , one could sense power of first female singer.
Woman warrior , like those ancient amazon women .
The first song, when I listened to it the first time, was accompined by a video of the singers. Now when I want to share it with my wife, the video is missing. The video adds immensly to the overall emotional impact of the song for me.
