God willing, I will post an analysis tomorrow of what apparently has happened (I will look at at least two main versions) and what is going on today.
At this point all I can do is to confirm that overnight the Russians have hit Ukrainian electricity nodes and that much of the Ukraine, especially in the East, is in the dark. Even “Ze” confirmed this. BTW – the Ukronazis were the first to massively strike at the LDNR electrical grid, so that escalation is not only not to be blamed on the Russian side, but I would argue that it was much overdue.
I am, again, creating an open thread, but please stick to the following request:
What I ask of you: please do NOT post various comments, opinions, analyses, etc. This is still too early to call and all so called “opinions” and “views” are nothing but baseless speculations.
Please just report facts and please indicate the source each time. That might also help me for my analysis tomorrow.

6 months in, and Russia is finally hitting Electrical Relays and power plants. Goes to show how “gentle” the operation has been, since U.S would start bombing the civilian population within 24 hours of the war in shock and awe operations.
This kind of Monday morning quarterbacking is pointless. It’s time to see what happens over the next few weeks as the Russians respond to the current situation. It’s now been reported that an entire Russian army corps (3rd) is positioned at or near the Donetsk front lines, that the UKR military force in the Kherson region has been severely depleted both in terms of manpower and equipment leaving that region seriously vulnerable, and there’s apparently a sizeable increase in the number of Russian air assets in Belorussia. I, for one, am watching these developments with great expectation and not too much anxiety.
Perhaps the delay is due to the Russians taking the time, and care to ensure that replacment units are available for any equipment they are planning to destroy, like high voltage switchgear or high voltage transformers. That would be consistent with the general nature of the SMO so far. It would also point to the destruction of the electricity grid as being a precursor for other significant actions.
The delay also allowed civilians to see Russia was avoiding civilian infrastructure. Probably won a lot of converts, but we may never know.

Most of the Ukrainian electrical power plants are located in the southeastern regions of the country.
There are 15 thermal power plants in Ukraine. All of them were built in Soviet times.
There are also 4 nuclear power plants in Ukraine: Zaporozhe – Rivne – Khmelnitsky – Yuzhnoukrainskaya. They have 15 reactors in total.
The Zaporozhe NPP has 6 reactors, and provides about 20% of the Ukraine’s Electrical supply.
Days ago (as a result of AFU strikes on the Zaporozhe NPP), Russia announced a safety shutdown of the plant. By the night of September 11, the last unit of the Zaporozhe NPP was stopped. Prior to the safety shut down, Ukrainian engineers had disconnected the 750 kV and 330 kV power lines from the NPP to the Electrical grid of Ukraine.
At about 8 p.m. local time, missiles struck

The Zmievskaya CHPP,
The Pavlograd CHPP-3,
And the Kremenchug thermal power plant.
The attacks collapsed the Electrical grid of Ukraine, and affected the Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporozhye, Odessa, Donetsk and the Kiev regions including the capital.
Electric trains all over the country were bought to a halt.
The Black Out was aggravated by disconnecting the western and central regions of Ukraine from the eastern and southern power net.
As a result of the drop in the load, the Yuzhnoukrainskaya and Khmelnitsky nuclear power plants made an emergency shut down of its generators. However, in Poltava several trolleybuses caught fire, caused by Voltage surge on the electrical net.
Today, two more thermal power plants in Left-Bank Ukraine were put temporarily out of service.
Something tells me we are entering another phase of this SMO, that the gloves are about to come off and NATO bases and supply lines to Ukraine are about to be hit. That another Russian red line has been crossed.
I read the other day about flights from Iran to Russia over Armenian airspace. It got me wondering about NATO and Turkey’s interests in closing that avenue of air corridor to Russia.
Moldova and Transnistria seem to have cooled off a bit as flash points for escalation.
I think this is important for interpreting the strikes on power plants: “Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on Saturday said the country plans to start electricity supplies to Poland from the Khmelnitskaya nuclear power plant.” He also wants to send power from ZNPP to Poland.

I will refrain from giving my take on the matter (see in other open thread on page 2), but I think this is very important information.
It was not a secret the Zelensky regime was planning a “massive Counter-attack with a million man army.” (Zelensky was running his mouth about it since July 2022.) It seems obvious the Russian general staff had planned to let this happen (only surprise was the exact location,) and was counting on Russian air supremacy to bog down the attack force with continuous air, missile, & artillery strikes until Russian armour could mobilise & rush in to:
(a) reinforce the defences
(b) encircle the Ukrainian attakers
(c) takeover the now abandoned Ukrainian fortifications, &
(d) destroy or capture whatever Ukrainians that survived the continuous Russian artillery & air strikes.
The narrowest point is apparently only 37km wide in open terrain. The Russian army has apparently sent many train loads of T-90M tanks. Combined with superior logistics & air supremacy, closing the gap should be quite easy for the Russian military.
The best Ukrainian units, along with a large portion of NATO’s equipment inventory get destroyed for what exactly? American image? Profits for Lockheed-Martin, so they can build more weapons with components from China & Russia that will be under embargo?

Hitting railways and bridges are a short term solution, quickly fixable. Plus there are too many of them to destroy (the Ukraine is a huge country).
No, hitting energy (fuel, gas, electricity, etc.) is much more effective.
Does ukraine still have the manpower, resources, and expertise to fix their railways, infrastructure, and bridges. They can set up pontoon bridges, but most of their infrastructure was built in soviet times, I can’t see how they will be able to rebuild under their current “administration,” without western contractors.
I thought with the long lines for fuel in the Ukraine at the start of the SMO, Ukrainians would be walking to the front…..nope, they travel by rail, by convoy, they just drive there…..on air? They must have prepositioned millions of litres of fuel over the past eight years….more than Russia can destroy in six months.
Their ability to get around by rail, to bring western weapons in to Ukraine by rail…..with all Russia’s stand off weapons…..just seems weird.

Appears they have been pulling the rods and as they cool they dont produce juice, this is most likely why the Russians left.
The last one is being cooled so there are probably plenty of bored and hungry people ready to go to where ever they can get the most food, or do the most damage.
Stopping the shelling and securing the area should be the priority, and this could take a while.
It appears to becoming a more realistic war picture now, but we’ll see. Much perseverance.
Russia should expand on hitting electrical grids and other infrastructure to the western part as well so that the more banderites who were mocking the eastern Ukrainian sufferings should get the taste of what it is like to be on the gray zone/war zone
Strange that the Ukies were able to pull off a counterattack. They were being decimated by Russian artillery beforethe counterattack. But as time passes, I’m coming to the conclusion that Mr. Paul Craig Roberts is a 100% right. This was supposed to be a limited SMO but the US and NATO wouldn’t allow it to be limited.

These were graduate international students drawn from many countries around the world. I asked them what they thought of the US media’s coverage of their own country and of other countries. They all thought the US media coverage of their own country was BS but that it was quite good on other countries!
As a traiee hack, many years ago, I had the salutary realisation, forced on me by constant observation, that media reports of ANY events are INVARIABLY inaccurate, and peppered with assumptions that don’t match the reality. You begin to know this from constant first-hand experience.
The fundamental rule is that nothing whatever that the ‘news’ media report should ever be trusted as more than roughly corresponding to the reality – at best; and it’s frequently just cloud-cuckoo-land inaccurate.

I actually don’t even believe anymore that a person necessarily must be purposely lying to tell untruths. I am confronted all the time with people communicating incorrect information even when they think they are telling the truth. Myself included.
Funny example. My wife was going through old pictures a while back. She came to me and asked me if I remembered her brother being at our wedding. Now mind you her brother is a life of the party kind of guy and our wedding was tiny, conducted in our small living room with very few people. There is no way we should have forgotten him being there. But both of us looked at the old pictures and still did not recall him being there.
Humans have terrible powers of observation and even worse memories. Then factor in purposeful lying and it is a wonder we can get and/or keep anything straight.

I have no idea what the eventual plan of Russia is in the former Ukraine. We always felt that Russia will liberate Ukraine up to the Dnieper River and south all the way through Odessa and eventually to Transniester. I don’t know now. Maybe we have to take Putin’s original goal of the SMO as freeing the two breakaway republics in Donbass and demilitarizing/denazifying Ukraine. Maybe they liberated/liberating Kherson and Zaporizhia only because it frees up the canal to Crimea which is part of Russia, and that’s it. Who knows. Maybe the Kremlin doesn’t really give a shit about Ukraine but only wants to make sure that Ukraine is never again a threat to Russia which Putin really does care about. Destroying the thermal stations, natural gas and electricity in all of Ukraine will make Ze desperate. Russia is showing the average Ukrainian what happens to you when your country aligns with the west. You, average Ukrainian, will pay the ultimate price for your stupidity and laziness all of these 30 years. You allowed your country to become the enemy of Russia. BAD IDEA, UKRAINIAN BROS!! The free lunch is over. I feel sorry for Gonzalo Lira who’s life in Kharkov will get very inconvenient and especially in the coming cold months.
My understanding is that it’s not only Kharkov that is experiencing a blackout. Although, I don’t how many other areas are experiencing blackouts as well.
While studying maps is necessary, it can induce one to assume that geography capture and occupation is a goal of a particular military operation. It may be, it may not be.
In this case, Russian SMO was never announced as geography capture and occupation. Destruction of Ukie army, yes. Occupation of Novorossiya, no. Classical Russian maneuver warfare implied, yes. Russia came into Donbas+ with SMO because countries she had just recognized asked for her help against the impending US-NATO genocide of Novorossiya. Russia is letting those countries decide whether they want to be part of the Russian Federation, not trying to occupy them. All very legal and above board, which is very important to Putin, Lavrov, Matviyenko, and Novak. Russia does not lose geography, say, around Kharkiv. She engages, as classically, in maneuver warfare. Land is not important. Annihilating enemy personnel is (demilitarization).
Lavrov stated a while back that newer US-NATO weapons — and presumably personnel, who are now on the ground in C4ISR combat roles in numbers, especially Brits/SAS — would cause Russia to push her line of comfort — against US-NATO — farther west, possibly (I don’t know) meaning line of the Dnipro or farther west. He did not specify a location for such a line.
The problem with that limited objective, as demonstrated by the most recent UA offensive, is that if Russia doesn’t sufficiently fortify and protect the occupied area, the enemy will attempt to retake it. If the enemy is being supplied with more and more troops and longer-range weapons and munitions and targeting intelligence, as the UA appear to have been given from the West, a buffer zone needs to be enforced even further beyond the occupied area. Therefore, territorial control would seem to be an essential part of demilitarization. It ultimately comes down to knocking out the enemy’s leadership and supply sponsorship, a daunting task in this case due to the danger of escalation against the West.
Maskirova in play, NATO marches a primarily conscript army out of prepared defensive positions extending supply lines into a Russian Artillery Cauldron. How stupid is that?
My understanding of Russia’s stated objectives were fourfold.
1. Retain Crimea
2. Free the Donbass region of Ukrainian attack
3. Keep Ukraine out of NATO
4. “De-Nazify” Ukraine
It would appear to me that these objectives are close to complete although “De-Nazifying” is somewhat subjective. And of course you need to solidify these objectives.
It would also appear that the “land bridge” between the Donbass and Crimea was an added bonus although to my knowledge not explicitly stated. I think it was a corollary of “De-Nazifying” and additionally was a logical outgrowth of Russia’s historical need for Black Sea ports.
The only think I can think of with the electricity grid is …smart phones.
If no one can charge their phones, alot of communication goes down , no one can film using phones etc , creating a large information black out for both sides.
The only option would be military radio equipment and vehicle’s powered by diesel generator’s.
But if there is no power to the petrol stations….what then ?
This is going to be interesting to see what Russia does next.

One hundred and fifty tanks and armour, by rail, for the next big offensive. The real offensive. If Kharkov really was to pin Russian reserves, they were moving out and south for the past week. Russia knew, maybe not to what extent, but knew Ukie offensive was coming, but the real battle will be in the south. Does seem a little under maned having to shift forces to pin holes, or as is the case, should the Ukrainians blitz south to Mariupol and north east towards Donestk, the blocking forces were never large enough to stop them. I still say the prize all along for Ukraine, NATO, Britain, US was Crimea. Still is. Forces were allowed to travel to that zone, unmolested. Now massing. Should it be powerful enough to reach Mariupol (no matter how many die) ………….dear God I cant even go there. Praying for Auslander and his family, all of Crimea and its peoples.

I dont see the same general pattern outside West. I meet more people there who are able to focus.
So was busily trying to construct a post that started with Fact. Well then started reading some of the other posts. Fact is now a days we don’t “know” much. Which also highlights the fact that it has been that way for a long time.
It makes perfect sense that if your army is tucked in safely behind civilians your enemy has to draw you out, that feels like a fact.
Ever since that early Putin video, Georgia war? in an army lunch tent where he seemed to offer a toast but then put down his glass and said, Lets grab a bite to eat and get back to work, I have been a fan of Putin. That is a fact.
I am confused, aggravated and losing patience with all things in the West. Especially the idea that intense hatred will solve anything. If Russia starts to act with hate, they will lose me.
They seem indifferent to us now, which is a clearly a bad sign. For as sure as anything, hate is closer to love, than indifference.
There have been some reports that today Russia attacked electricity objects in ukraine resulting in lights out etc. This is obviously rubbish, and gives too much credit to the enemy: it was just some exploding air conditioner units and the (scummy) ukrainian military shooting at its own infrastructure to protect it (to prevent much greater damage). Anybody saying otherwise is a traitor and working for the enemy. ;)
My feeling is that Nato is trying to pull Russia into a trap. The “victory” of Ukie armies in reality is not a victory and is not made by Ukie but, as american tabloids admitted, has been planned and organized entirely by Usa/Nato.
My feeling is that Usa/Nato is trying to force Russia to escalate the SMO into a full scale war, in order to enter officially into Ukraine territory to “defend” the poor Ukies.
Actually I think that Nato is working on that since at least 2014. They want a war with Russia and China because without a war, Usa is going to lose hegemony without any chance to avoid it.
And since Usa (and UE) have been totally swallowed by private financial powers, the only thing they can do to avoid the loss of hegemony is to use their military power at its most, with the help of information used as a weapon itself.
Same for China. USA is clearly trying to pull China into a trap on Taiwan.
So this Ukie advance can be seen as a way to show Russia that SMO is not enough anymore, given that Ukraine is now full of western weapons and “volunteers” and it’s too hard to beat them with the limited human resource of SMO.
So now the point is: Russia must now choose what’s next. It cannot keep things how they are, it would just get stuck and risk too much also inside its own territory.
Can this bombing of electrical supplies be just the first step of a new strategy? Can it be the introduction to a full scale war? Usually, first thing you do when you make a REAL war is to destroy the enemy infrastructures and electicity supply.
So are we at the beginning of a real Nato-Russia war in Ukraine?

Well, okay. Zelensky is finally reaping what he sowed, as Russia delivers some of the old fashioned Yankee-inspired shock and awe upon Kharkov. Who’s next? Russia has offered Kiev the “easy way” of resolving this conflict for half a year. I do believe they are next in line to experience doing things the “hard way” as Putin becomes disciplinarian. Frankly, I suspect that the rapid withdrawal of Russian troops near Kharkov was to sucker the Ukies into another trap–what the Russians refer to as a cauldron. Please come into my parlor, said the spider to the fly. Odessa and surrounds will be the last piece of ethnic Russian territory that Putin is interested in annexing to the RF. Then on to spank L’vov and turn those delinquents over to their parents in Poland. They should be grateful to be severed from Big Zee’s Jewish Nazis in rump Ukriane. Same for the lucky provinces that will get to be reunited with their brethren in Romania and Hungary. Otherwise, winter should be an interesting experience for the hard core Nazis around Kiev and L’vov, which will not be supplied with life’s necessities such as heating oil and electricity like the liberated bits of Ukraine. Uncle Sam cannot provide what Daddy Vlady can easily spare, now that the EU has rejected Putin’s longstanding generosity. Good evening all since this is an open thread I’d like to ask if anyone can recommend a good history of Russia and Russians in English. I have 2 books but one is a history of the Romanovs, which is a good book I’m nearing the end of Catherine the Great’s reign, is a history firstly of the imperial family and Russia second. The other is good but heavy on rhetoric and gets sidetracked by coming back to early 21st century politics.
Most of my knowledge comes from books where the Russians played a part, like their baptism to Orthodoxy and aid to Byzantium in Norwich’s excellent 3 volume history of Byzantium or Cambridge Illustrated Atlas of War, both are great, detailing the Great Northern War, Napoleonic wars etc or another book on The First World War. Any recommendations are welcome as it is frustrating only seeing books on Lenin, Stalin, death of the imperial family and President Putin. I understand those are important topics but I’d like to know more about the earlier history. Thanks in advance.

It is historical fiction, but I recently enjoyed a book called “Russka” that covered 1800 years up to about the 1990s. I took some Russian history in college and based on that, I thought it gave a good panoramic view of Russian history although obviously scope leads to skips and jumps.

The window of time is closing for NATO to justify the long-awaited Third World War of all NATO countries against Russia and then against China. Some notes on electrical generation and grids, though I’m not a direct expert (engineer), I’ve spent a lot of time in and around plants. From the videos it looks like almost all the strikes were on ground transformers. These are replaceable but not always easily or quickly replaceable. Strikes against the actual turbine-generator would be essentially permanent and if struck while operational I’d expect a great many secondary explosions of the plant as a whole with cascading, catastrophic failure in high pressure steam lines, the boiler units and bunker fires/explosions.
The turbine deck of a US plant would be a very soft target, but soviet plant construction may be significantly hardened. In the US they’re just a giant hall with a simple roof.
Striking the transformers obviously causes massive grid destabilization. Plants not only push electricity out but need it coming in. And grids need to be balanced carefully. Based on the reports out there, the grid destabilization across Ukraine was massive. They’ll patch things up quickly because there’s a lot of redundancy, but it will not work like it did before until transformers, lines and switchyards are repaired. Everything will be in limp mode and quite vulnerable.
You can’t just stop and start a thermal power plant (steam in US lingo, generally coal). It usually takes almost a day even for an emergency shutdown and restarts can be 48 hour operations. If a unit is shut down for very long, things get complicated with potential for turbine shaft deflection and other issues. If transformer units are available, the switch out can be pretty quick but that’s not usually related to a missile strike in a switchyard but a simple transformer failure where the ground breakers do their jobs. In the US at least, there isn’t enough replacement stock. I can’t speak to Ukraine but it’s not the first time ground transformers have been lost. I imagine there is not a lot of replacement equipment available.
I would also expect that there’s a lot of damage to lower voltage transformers and breakers at substations. The trolley busses catching on fire is evidence that the whole grid went out of control. Ukraine will almost certainly have to take large consumers fully off grid until things are repaired. So the permanent damage to electrical infrastructure is probably fairly minimal, but the ability to keep breaking the grid is also fairly easy for Russia. And the more times it gets hit, the harder it is to repair and more unstable the whole thing becomes.
It appears Ukraine had to disconnect their remaining nuke plants for stability and safety reasons. Those especially can’t remain off grid very long before emergency shutdown procedures would need to be initiated (that is, going cold like ZNPP). if nuke plants go semi-permanently offline, no matter what Ukraine does to repair the grid and thermal plants nothing’s going to work right. Nukes are too big a percentage of Ukrainian generation, and unstable grids are prone to all sorts of failures even without kalibers being dropped into them.
All in all, this was a significant escalation on Russia’s part that’s fairly easy to sustain and will cause second and third order effects of significance. At the same time, it’s not permanent damage which fits the Russian MO in this conflict.

If the political leadership in Moscow was belatedly realising that the operation was a blunder, given that territory fought over for months has been lost within days, and wanted to finally set matters straight, they would incapacitate the electric grid in the entire country and especially the capital. Railroads and bridges would be destroyed systematically and in key locations starting right at the Ukrainian-Polish border.
My prediction: Unless Putin is ousted from power quickly, the conflict will drag on rather inconclusively. Why? Because both the Ukrainian and the Russian sides are being used by the masterminds of the Great Reset and the UN Agenda 2030. Europe, its industry, family owned SMEs, the middle class as well the critical, intelligentsia are the real targets. 1) Yes, there is a major Ukrainian offensive that is achieving initial successes, though at a proportional cost.
2) Russia retreated rather than suffer high losses in untenable positions
3) the situation is being miles for propaganda value to justify the suffering of tens of millions of people in western countries due to blowback from the sanctions war.

▪️Detachments of “PMC Wagner” continue to control the intersection in the east of Bakhmut (Artemovsk), hitting the firing positions and strongholds of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the city itself and its environs.
▪️In parallel with this, the Wagnerites are fighting in the area of the Donbasskaya electrical substation, and are also developing an offensive towards Nikolaevka Vtoroy and Otradovka.
▪️There are no significant changes in the front line in Soledar : clashes on the eastern outskirts of the settlement will be sold.
▪️Allied forces carried out at least two missile strikes against targets in Konstantinovka. The supply of units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the area of Bakhmut and Soledar is carried out through this settlement .
🔻A difficult situation is developing in the Belogorovka area, where the Armed Forces of Ukraine are making attempts to take the village by storm. Heavy fighting is also taking place in the area of Disputed.
In the event that the allied forces lose control over settlements, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive a foothold for an offensive on Severodonetsk, Lisichansk and Kremennaya in order to reach the rear of the group in the LPR.

If Russia wishes to shut down the entire Ukrainian power grid without totally destroying it and necessitating years of rebuilding, is there a NON-NUCLEAR EMP pulse option they could use? (Nuclear EMP pulse fries it for good, is my understanding, plus it gives a green light to Nato to start nuking Russia.) How about some form of cyber-attack on the Ukie system? If the Ukies have cyber-attack capabilities they would use them against Russia whether attacked first or never attacked at all. What Russia needs to do first though, is to harden the emergency power sources (diesel generators?) that keep the spent fuel rods in the cooling ponds at the nuclear power plants from melting down. They should just pull the rods and shut down power generation at the plants. The Nazi storm troopers can just freeze in the dark and cancel their scheduled counter attacks. Obomber and Clueless Joe have already threatened cyber attack against Russia years ago before leaving office in 2017. It’s probably the first thing Nato will do v. Russia if and when it enters the war unannounced and for no obvious reason. No doubt Zelensky has been begging Washington for that to happen.
Speculation about NATO resorting to nuclear weapons if Russia started using its nukes against the Ukraine should not deter Russia from considering such option. The issue would be: Is NATO suicidal and stupid enough to use nukes against Russia, knowing that Russia would completely destroy all of these NATO countries in response. Let us not forget that the US started all this problem with the coup they organized in 2014, and then they started giving orders to its puppet nazi regime in Kiev, like not implementing the Minsk agreement; starting the genocide against the Donbass, accepting to host American bio labs, which aim, in part, for the extermination of the Slavic race. Russia has one of two options: Either declare a total war against the Ukraine and use a combination of tactical and strategic weapons to completely destroy the Kiev regime, or use its ICBM to achieve the same goal without declaring a total war against the Ukraine. Would NATO be stupid enough to risk interfering and cause utter destruction of all of its members with no exception. This is a war for the very basic existence of Russia; they have now to take the initiative and deliver the fatal blow that would completely destroy the Kiev regime.
