The West is so used to the one-sided game that they seem genuinely surprised that Russia has responded to the West’s sanctions against her.
That’s ok, let them get used to it. Whoever will come to us with a sword by the sword will perish. That is only when we are talking about a battle sword and a “hot” war. If this is an economic war where the weapons are prohibitions and sanctions, the aggressor will end up getting more than he asked for.
I support with both hands the introduction of the retaliatory sanctions against countries, which in turn tried to “sanction” Russia. For many reasons:
– it is good for our economy and our producers;
– it is important for the self-respect of our people, who never failed to punish an offender, who lost the sense of reality;
– it is necessary to foster the respect for Russia not only inside the country but also beyond its borders.
Russia is a superpower; we retrieved this status again after the reunification with Crimea. Therefore, the boorish attitude towards Russia as a guilty child, who must be punished and taught a lesson, is futile.
From now on, any aggressor must get used to the fact that he will pay dearly for his aggression. Retribution will be measured by the degree of the aggression.
The aggressor will pay dearly with his economy and income for economic aggression. He will pay dearly with his soldiers’ lives and with the loss of freedom of maneuver in the international sphere for military aggression.
As it has already happened many times in history, we didn’t start the confrontation. This is Russia who is being “punished” because … a war is going on near our borders, after explicit and practically overt support of the coup d’état in Ukraine by the West. This is NATO that threatens to expand its infrastructure near our borders. This is our territory that is being shelled from the conflict zone.
The West itself is not in danger. Russia does not take any hostile actions towards the West near its borders. But we are being punished. Well, we will punish you. You need us more than we need you.
From now on, not a single cannon has the right to shoot near our borders without our permission. The world should understand it and remember. That’s how it was since the times of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna to the times of Leonid Brezhnev.
No one has the right to shoot near our borders without our permission, and especially across it.
The whole European part of Eurasia is the area of our vital interests. Get used to it, gentlemen “partners”.
That’s how it was and that’s how it should be now. In the meantime, military and economic guns are shooting not only without our permission, but at us. Therefore, the shooters must and will be punished.
Punished severely. That’s enough! Our kindness is mistakenly decrypted by the West as our weakness.
It’s time to answer aggression and political pressure on Russia with pain inflicting techniques.
Just over a week ago in the article “Pain inflicting techniques in the protection of Russia” I wrote the following:
“It’s time for Russia to switch to a policy of pain inflicting techniques. Further continuation of the policy of peace only allows our enemies to increase their strength. We must stop simply smiling and respond to the attacks on us.
Our actions should be faster and more painful than the blows of our opponents. As like in the ring, where against a heavyweight boxer, the weaker athlete can have only one advantage: speed.
And deliver painful blows to the sensitive spots of a stronger opponent. What are the pain points of our geopolitical “partners”? You need to understand, evaluate and pick them out.
So that’s what happened. We understood, appreciated, and made our choice. And we have answered.
Already being banned:
According to the measures for implementation of the Presidential Executive Order No 560 of 6 August 2014 “On Adopting Special Economic Measures to Provide for Security of the Russian Federation” a 1-year ban has been introduced on the imports of agricultural products, raw materials, and foodstuffs from the following countries:
– United States Of America;
– European Union countries;
– Canada;
– Australia;
– The Kingdom Of Norway.
The list includes:
1. chilled, fresh or frozen beef, pork, poultry, salted, dried, or smoked meat, fish and seafood.
2. milk and dairy products, vegetables, fruits and nuts, sausages and similar products, and other variety meat (including finished food products made on their basis).
3. processed foods, cheese, cottage cheese and other dairy products based of vegetative fats.
It needs to be emphasized that the RF’s embargo on products from the Western countries does not extend to baby food imports and to individuals bringing in goods from countries on Russia’s sanctions list.
In addition, Russia has imposed a ban on the transit of Ukrainian airlines’ flights through its airspace. “There is one solution which was issued by the government. We’re referring to the suspension of Ukrainian airlines’ transit flights through Russian airspace to a number of countries – Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia and Turkey,” said D.A. Medvedev.
The sanctions that can be further implemented:
1. An airspace ban against European and US airlines that fly over our airspace to Eastern Asia, namely, the Asia-Pacific Region.
2. Changing the so-called Russian airspace entry and exit points for European scheduled and charter flights. This will affect transportation costs and fare prices for the Western carriers.
“Our country is ready to revise the rules of using the trans-Siberian routes, that is, to denounce the agreed upon modernisation principles of the existing system, – stated the Prime Minister D.A. Medvedev. – This revision will apply in full to the EU countries. We will also discontinue talks with the US air authorities on the use of the trans-Siberian routes.”
The response to the aggression is not only justified, but is the only right step for Russia. However, Russia is ready to stop the confrontation and to start a peaceful and mutually beneficial cooperation.
Russia was forced to introduce the sanctions in response to those countries which have declared economic sanctions against us. This is a clear signal to everybody else: don’t even think about it! It’ll cost you. Note that our sanctions will remain valid for one year.
It’s enough for our “partners” to feel the pain and to change their minds. If this didn’t help, the sanctions can be extended. We’ll introduce them to new sectors where they will hurt you most, and will be suitable for us.
This is our country, and thus, the rules will also be ours. We have played by your rules long enough. Thank you, our dear partners that you have now abolished your own rules. This has delivered us from the need to withdraw unilaterally.
You didn’t expect this?
Get used to it. We are back..

In my opinion, Russia never lost the superpower status. It was lost in some people’s minds, and perhaps in the propaganda press. But in real power, it simply went into a little chaotic period.
Exactly. And as an American, I fully support the rights and actions of the Russian Federation in relation to the conflict in the state formation known as Ukraine. Furthermore, I support the antifascist resistance in Novorussia – the new revolutionary people’s movement for the 21st century.

This is important, if it is the prevailing attitude of the government majority. However, he does seem to voice the tone of the Russian sanctions. I was kind of hoping that at some point Russia would grow tired of sand kicked in the face.

Dear The Saker,
I love that last line…….”Get used to it. We are back..”…..

The Nazi armies must never be allowed to occupy New Russia, Slavyansk and Saur Moglia must be liberated and rebuilt, Odessa through Kharkiv and finally Kiev itself.
Nothing short of this result will fulfill historical justice and set the tone for the future of the new free world.

I like this!
all best to our Slavic brothers from Croatia
Should the refusal of airspace option for European-East Asian routes take place, how much longer would alternative routes be and how costly for airlines in terms of fuel and for passengers/freighters in terms of fares? Asked as being ignorant in aviation matters.
I read recently that the flight restrictions thing is just bluster. Nobody can afford it. And retaliatory air sanctions against Russia would be painfull. I think its off the table…
It would be great to see the fellow slavic peoples of Ukraine and Russia once again at peace, with strong and mutually respected borders and the free flow of commerce, peoples and ideas. It would be even better to see a strong, democratic and confident Russia, with the rule of law entrenched and the state providing efficent and top quality infrastructure and services to its people.
This message seems to be a game changer it would appear since, if not mistaken, Nikolai Starikov was not Putin’s biggest fan, for lack of a better term, in the past.
Can anyone confirm or deny their historical relationship or the relationship between the two political party’s positions and/or ideologies?
When I was 20 the Berlin Wall came tumblin’ down. While everyone was jubilant I recall the less optimistic reaction of my father. He was the only person I knew who thought the Soviet collapse was a terrible tragedy.
At the time I scoffed but now I see how right he was.
Years later many in the West have come to the same conclusion. When Russia is weak it’s bad for everyone.
Good to see Russia is BACK!
In Australia (which, strangely but appropriately, rhymes with ‘failure’)the bi-partisan hysteria of the human detritus that our beautiful ‘capitalist democracy’ has thrown up as leaders, at ‘Evil Putin’s’ outrageous ‘aggression’ in retaliating to our morally pure and justified sanctions, has been truly nauseating and comical at once. How dare he!!!??? And, as ever, the Groupthink is 100% with no dissent. The truth is beginning to percolate through that the Ukie Nazis killed our people on the MH 17, but the MSM has totally suppressed the facts as usual. Here, the arrogant liar is King.
Cortes @ 09 August, 2014 23:56
“…how much longer would alternative routes be and how costly for airlines…”
Depending on the end-points of a given route, the expected increase in travel times is 3-4 hrs, and the expected cost increases would be $20-30k per flight in fuel alone ($80-90/passenger). Maintenance and capital costs would also increase.
The latter won’t affect Euro business much. The former is a major impediment to business travel.
Malaysian Airlines is a major direct carrier to Asia. The traveling public now views it as “dangerous”. Perhaps, it has been made “dangerous” at least partially in anticipation of Russia’s counter sanctions? MH as proxy for Asian carriers?

Well I suspect most of us are dancing on air simply from the joy of reading these words. This article by Starikov, following the visionary interview with Mikhail Khazin right before, makes for a very happy Saturday evening here in the US. Get some sleep Saker, well done, thanks!
I had to remind myself who Starikov is – his being the co-chair of one of the political parties threw me a little. This is not an official pronouncement. But I suspect plenty of officials will also secretly thrill to these words.
Of course, Putin cannot come out and say quite these things, in quite this way. But Starikov can, and he says it all so well.
To get a little more of Starikov, one could watch a couple of clips on YouTube gathered as part of the great collection put together by New Insight – with very good English subtitles.
Here is Starikov in less than 3 minutes explaining how the Russian oligarch is simply a mechanism for transferring Russia’s resources to the West:
The real reason Khodorkovsky was arrested, Nikolai Starikov
And here he is back in April explaining why the US is actually interested in Ukraine, the prizes that the US hoped to seize:
Three prizes of Ukraine, Nikolai Starikov [11 minutes]
russia is back! sorely missed.
@Anonymous: Nikolai Starikov was not Putin’s biggest fan, for lack of a better term, in the past. Can anyone confirm or deny their historical relationship or the relationship between the two political party’s positions and/or ideologies?
Interesting point! I would say that Starikov approves of Putin when Putin is right, but is critical of Putin when Putin seems to be hesitant. I would argue that most Russians are like that. You have to see that Putin *had* to hide his games for years, therefore there is an inevitable ambiguity about the man and his true goals. The more he comes out of the closet, so to speak, the more Russians like him, but I would not call that a blind trust. It’s a “we trust you but you better not…” kind of trust. So far, the Ukrainian crisis made a lot of folks, including Starikov, and yours truly, come to the conclusion that Putin is on the right course, but we will not know until the situation comes to some kind of resolution, which is nowhere near in sight. I am quite sure that Starikov would not hesitate for one second to firmly condemn Putin if he felt like this is the right thing to do. Ditto for me, by the way.
So it is a nerve wrecking waiting game which drives us all crazy…
Does that make sense to you?
Cheers,
The Saker
Personally, I like the present – “coming out of closet” statement of Russia; The vicious but cowardly western psychopaths tend to mistake kindness for weakness all the time, and the time comes to shock them a bit to force their return to Reality, which is different, than their wishful thinking. And immediately they start whining, after spitting so much venom!
Good for Russia! Edgar Cayce might be right about Russia being the Light of the World in this darkest period…
Erebus,
More realistically, many European airlines would have to stop flying to various countries in Asia. Who would want to take an extra four hours when Asian airlines would go direct? Besides, some of the distances might become too far for the fuel capacity.
So Europe would look at the loss of many, many flights, and push some of these airlines to the verge of bankruptcy. Yes, Aeroflot would lose a certain amount of money from flyover fees, but the Asian airlines would increase their flights substantially, so you are looking at an incredible hit to the EU and not much to Russia.
I thought the main pain-inflicting technique for the first six months or so of this war was complaints and demarches in the UN. Just yesterday, Lavrov hit the West by asking for a way to get humanitarian aid into the Donbass.
The problem is still that the Russian elite are addicted to the West. They party there, send their kids to school there, and probably have half their assets there. Perhaps the Russian government should try to encourage the use of Hong Kong banks.
Oi Vey! The Russian are not playing cricket!
Never mind The US,EU, Canada, Australia & Norway are taking Russia to the WTO for unfair ban trade! L.O.L ! L.O.L ! L.O.L !
It seem no one takes into account to “Codeshare agreement” between airlines. Simply it means, AA can transfer their passengers flying between NY to EU’s countries with Cathay Pacific or airlines within their alliance, sharing passengers.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codeshare_agreement
“The three largest passenger airline alliances are Star Alliance, SkyTeam, and Oneworld. Alliances also form between cargo airlines…. Alliances provide a network of connectivity and convenience for international passengers and international packages….”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airline_alliance
Usual disadvantage of the intelligent and educated people is, that they are polite. Their advantage is, that they know ahead what they want to achieve and they always achieve their goals.
Thugs they think if they are going to threaten somebody they will win. Well big mistake, especially in connection with Russia, Russia never lost a war in their history and regarding to the Afghanistan, they left simply because of the new geopolitical development was in the picture.
Starikov is the typical example of the Russian Daddy who will punish his children if they are going to be disrespectful and it supposed to be like that. If the kids don’t learn the self-respect in their childhood they are never going to respect nobody in their lives.
Very well written article, good for Russian and God bless the nation of truly heroes.
Well, just a few days I’ve been watching videos on the oligarchs, who did not know about the details, as a result of finding a Russian television series on the subject, about six hours, but in Russian. I asked Russian friends here if there was something similar with English subtitles, but no one has answered nothing.
Therefore, I had to limit myself to a BBC documentary, which obviously do not include the Russian point of view. But I have to say that in my case, I just watch what these people say, how they say it, their looks, how they act, how they laugh, to conclude what type of specimen are.
Since starting, if I see a person my age (Khodorkovsky, Abramovich) who has accumulated that amount of money, at a time when his country was plunged into a major crisis destabilized by foreign interests, really, I no need to hear more or need to know anything about Vladímir Vladímirovich Putin, is simply not possible, not paying taxes, obeying the law and not take what is not yours.
Yesterday I was watching the first of a serie of three, devoted to Berezhovsky. I see this guy is obsessed with V.V.Putin, vindictiveness blind him, and it seems to be the kind that do not leave the issue. According to the documentary financed the Orange Revolution in Ukraine and is obsessed with this country in order to hurt Putin. It seems that Khodorkovsky partner has joined him in the Crusade. Says this man, from Israel wherw he lives now, that Berezhovsky “love Russia”. Well, this statement falls under its own weight, because if you love your country neither scams it or its people, isn´t it ?
At one point in the documentary, Berezhovsky says that Russia will collaps (a clear sign of how much he loves the country) or Putin will collapse.
I must say that it will not be. We will hold it. We are more and our values are better than his.
That will be our Crusade.

In the midst of the filth that you have see and hear there, I also found a documentary about the life of V.V.Putin which, by a french journalist, which just confirms me in my impressions, that he is a simple man, loving the outdoors, sports and meeting friends, no friend of upscale social events, struggling to put some order in the country and trying to prevent some unscrupulous to ruin the country regardless of the thousands of lives left scattered on the road.
There are some lovely details that also display it as a normal human being, like when he is putting his Hockey helmet upside down, or when his old dog comes to meet him to the pool or the moments with his teammates in the judo club.
Here is the documentary, in french, I guess some of you will enjoy it:

@elsi many thanks for that french documentary.
my french is a bit rusty, but I can still understand it.
you will never see putin that intimate, upclose and most importantly HUMAN.
compare this MAN with the socio-psychopaths of the west! obama? kerry? biden? bush? male and female clintons?? hahaha! compared to V.V. Putin they are all first rate inhuman monsters and on another level total clowns!
HA!
The next step is for the US and others to extend the banking sanctions so that Russian importers cannot pay alternative suppliers. Both sides are lunatics seeking war and have been since Russia launched its blockade (sanctions) of Ukraine this time last year. A very aggressive first act. As stupid as the Tsar’s mobilization.
Absolutely , I couldn’t have said it better myself…Actually Russia was recovering from the corrupt , irresponsible Yeltsin economic mismanagement..Now Russia is loaded with cash and more disciplined and in much better shape. Even though they were still superpower. Whereas now the EU and US are morally, economically and socially bankrupt, they have insanely driven to spoil things for the rest of the world including Russia
I am glad to see Russia back on the block after a short break…There ought to be a counterbalance to the US/EU/Israel /Nato perpetual mischief making..They have destroyed and looted many nations and massacred millions of people in the process in order to make profit..This insane behavior has to end by any means necessary..When a nation’s resources are coveted the western bloodhounds begin to discredit it’s leader with the help of their presstitute,followed by cries of lack of democracy and human rights violations. At the same time nothing is mentioned about the Israeli massacre of Gazans. I am pleased to say that the western BloodSmiths are living on borrowed time. The sane world is united this time to put an end to their perpetual mischief making once and for all

Without getting too personal SoartotheSky, a couple of questions for you:
1) How well did those airtight US sanctions work with collapsing Iran’s economy? True they’re in pain with 20-30% annual inflation but they don’t have nearly the resources or trade relationships that Russia has. The blowback in fact was Iran setting up a gold trade with India through Turkey to pay for oil. Demand for petrodollars was reduced as a result. How much more so for Russia which pumps three times as much oil as Iran daily?
2) On your claim that ‘both sides are lunatics seeking war’, why then didn’t Putin overrun the Donbas and heck keep on driving along the coast when the Ukie military was in a totally demoralized state and would likely offer little initial resistance back in March? Seems total war or territorial expansion is NOT Putin’s objective. Even pro-Kievniks like Timothy Garton Ash who spin laughable fantasies about Kiev becoming a showcase for economic success and freedoms to Russians acknowledge if Putin really wanted the headache of the Donbas, he would have taken it already.
The reality is, Putin sees the Donbas as useful to bleed out his enemies and literally kill off a lot of the Ukie Nazis, but he doesn’t want to be stuck with the bill for reconstructing it. Which Kiev will have even assuming it can successfully complete the ‘ATO’ — a sullen population in a ruined land that will be blamed for having a ‘Soviet mentality’ despite the Galicians and central Ukrainians having destroyed most of the infrastructure, not the locals.
@ Soarintothesky
SWIFT is an incredibly useful European based (Belgium) system that enables money to be transferred from one bank to another in a seamless fashion.
Now that it has been used once as a weapon of war, in respect of Iran, it is compromised because up until that time SWIFT had been seen as being risk free. As soon as that happened then banks and governments worldwide will have understood the fundamental weakness of SWIFT as a tool to enable money movement.
This is why we are seeing a large uptick in the use of bi-lateral currency agreements, headlined by those between Russia and China but with many other examples as well.
What is being fabricated, right now, is a skein of agreements that as they multiply will enable a network effect for payments such that two parties, unrelated by SWIFT or other agreement can transparently make payments through mutually shared intermediaries.
Right now, as a consumer, I make international payments that do not use the SWIFT system where I make a deposit to the account of one party through an intermediary. The intermediary then finds a corresponding party where I am who deposits money into my account wherever I happen to be. For me the system is inexpensive – cheaper than a normal transfer and faster.
If the US were to attempt to destroy SWIFT by blocking out one of the world’s largest economies from the system then all that will happen is that development of the alternatives will proceed even faster. Very soon thereafter SWIFT will fall into disuse because it is no longer a credible or reliable service.
@Elsie,
Thank you for documentary of Putin.
