I am not sure how this can be good for Russia – and I mean the way this whole operation is conducted. Very poor effort to present Russian side of story. Fortunately, in the US at least memories are short and there’s a high degree of skepticism concerning “the authorities” in all parts of the country except the two coasts. We’ve had balls to the wall anti-Russian propaganda since Trump was elected. Don’t automatically believe what you can’t verify. I’m from the U.S. I grew up in the U.S. Back in the 1950s and early 1960s when I was in elementary school, we had air raid drills in school. We’d have to sit under our desks for long periods or were filed out into the hallway where we leaned against the walls with our arms folded over our heads. It did not make much sense since I didn’t think it would protect us much and I doubted that the Soviets would bomb my tiny (pop. less than 2000) town. But I’ve come to realize that protection was not the point. Indoctrination was the point. These drills were designed to leave a lasting impression on us kids and it did just that. Looking back, it was kind of sick.
But the drilling of Russophobia into us Americans never stopped. Even with the peaceful collapse of the Soviet Union. It’s now a built into Americans–a feature and a bug. They know nothing about Russia and they know nothing about how we got to this point with Ukraine. It wouldn’t matter of they did. I’ve tried to explain the events of early 2014 along with more recent events to them. It does no good–they just shut it out.

Sanctions will hurt some in short term, but you know you are going to take some punches in a fight. Sanctions aren’t a knockout blow considering how oil and gas prices offset this cost.
Long term, sanctions actually help Russia because many countries and companies depend on Russia for things and have to continue to do business with them. So an entire eco system of sanctions resistant ways to conduct business will continue to evolve and be mainstreamed.

At the moment in the country where I live they are actively blocking most non-MSM news sources like liveuamap, so I can’t check it at the moment, though I’m actively following other channels that publish videos/pictures from both sides. There is not a single picture about those captured Russians (a couple of DNR/LNR captured solders is the only video available).

Russia is not “losing” this, but there ARE losses. Ukraine is not a cakewalk. In fact Ukraine is one of the largest militaries of Europe, ranked by “globalfirepower” authoritative site near the top 20, ahead of militaries like Canada, Israel etc. For comparison, the country of Georgia is ranked 80th++ and that was still no cakewalk. Ukraine has a population of nearly 50 million people which is close to top European nations (compare this to for instance Georgia which has under 4 million people). Ukraine has a higher population than even Vietnam when U.S. invaded, and on top of that Ukraine is funded with billions of western dollars and specialist equipment, as well as western intelligences/military running things behind the scenes, feeding them with real time satellite and radar data to desperately thwart Russia.
Ukraine was always the most powerful Soviet Republic and has inherited much of that might from the USSR, from their sheer population size, to the amount of their equipment. This is by NO MEANS a cakewalk. Russia may suffer many losses as it has already in this invasion, but ultimately of course it will prevail.

Any news released by websites connected to the Ukrainian government should be considered unreliable. I remember the 2014-15 war; all Ukrainian military news sites denied the reality of the Battle of Ilovaisk while it was happening, and even for days afterward.
Also, I remember back in the summer of 2014 that Ukrainian sources of information reported Ukrainian military units penetrating downtown Donetsk in force. Later, it was uncovered that Ukrainian troops never enter the city of Donetsk. Not at all.

just 20/20 hindsighting here, but i think the biggest mistake putin made was not doing this in 2014 when the west were already screeching about him anyway. most people here will recall the western/NATO media stenographers announcing an “invasion” back then, so it’s not like he had much to lose at the time.
as for why he didn’t back then, i can only guess that it was syria. the russian public tolerated that policy (probably with fresh memories of beslan and little risk from a far away intervention) but they would have been a bit pissed if that was combined with any action on the ukrainian front. a lot of russians are old enough to recall afghanistan and how it became “their vietnam” thanks to certain malevolent actors of the time. now that syria is less of a drain it’s “better late than never” time i guess. hopefully it stays surgical and civilian deaths are minimal.

My biggest question so far is, what is Russia’s intent in regards to Kiev? It seems the forces are progressing in the direction towards Kiev, but is it simply to surround it and neutralize all Ukrainian armed forces, or is it to actually seize Kiev? I find it hard to believe they would want to seize Kiev and so I’m leaning towards the other explanation, simply progressing towards it because that’s where the largest concentration of Ukrop forces would presumably be. But I would find it very hard to believe Russia actually intends to march tanks through Kiev city streets and or capture the actual presidential leadership of Ukraine.

I wonder how far de-militarisation has to go….consfication and destruction of all those expensive Nato weapons that qere delivered….destroy all ukr weaponry tanks guns planes missiles….manufacturing and military repair shops….seize all civilian guns and civil gun shops plus ammo…destroy demolish all miltary barracks physical buildings military training facilities etc consficate all government assets who voted for the ATO and civil servants confirming such orders and such as AZOV their financial assets stop pension payments to such for compensation to Donbass …plus seize financial assets to pay missing pensions and other social payments but leave some kind of civil police force. .compile lists of all miltary staff SBU and private military companies to enable this ? Find any MH17 records and search records to find corroboration of humanitarian and war crimes as noted in white book sent to la Hague but prosecute in Russia.
Russia must “lustrate ” so to speak on its own terms…any other suggestions? Hope saker can comment on the depth and detail required for neutralisation and how to prevent further nato armaments arriving…..

Only NOW the Western press purports to show plenty of photographs of fighting, after 8 years of American goading of Russia to defend itself. Never before any of the atrocities perpetrated by the Ukies in Donbas or even in Crimea. Suddenly they have access to the battlefields? Ukies on the run allow them to see and record everything? Especially the supposed tank and helicopter kills they are somehow making? Not sure I buy it. How much is staged propaganda and how much real I wonder? The bit about “mobile crematoriums” is such a transparent ruse to demonise Putin as the new “Hitler.”

The “West” has finally managed to force Russia into a military response.
Why do I say this?
Let’s have a look at the background:
In 2014 the US staged a coup in the Ukraine under the disguise of a “color revolution”.
The hard core of the putschists were bona-fide Nazis, wearing swastika and wolfsangel symbols, who say they want to kill Jews and “Moskals”.
They were given a share in the government and they form a large part of the Ukrainian fighting force.
A law was introduced that disciminates citizens because of ethnicity.
All opposition and critical press is suppressed.
The “government” is fighting a war against its own population in the Donbass. Civilians are cut off incomes and official documents, and are intentionally shelled.
Why was Russia basically forced to act decisively?
The Ukraine’s military doctrine provides the “return” of Crimea by military means.
But Crimea is now part of the Russian Federation, since a referendum held on Crimea after the fascist coup in Kiev and after the new “government” started to commit atrocities.
I.e. the Ukraine’s military doctrine provides for a war with Russia.
The Ukraine wants to become part of NATO. And NATO basically said this was fine with them, and is pouring in weaponry and military advisors.
And now the Ukrainian government said they want nukes. Remember, an essential faction of the “government” are Nazis.

I think that was the plan. Russia was provoked to the max:

NATO politicians alluded that they will not send troops, there only would be sanctions, but that also in the event of a “cyber attack” – a false flag already in the making, with preparative simulations already conducted.
So Russia was basically told: Sanctions will come no matter what. And if you do not invade everything will get worse, with the help of NATO.

To that end the Empire has continuously chipped away countries with strong links to Russia by orchestrating “color revolutions” and financing and bribing parties to generate anti-russian politics. It also helped create armed conflicts and terrorist activities both in and outside Russia, and orchestrated “events” like Skripal or MH17 to justify sanctions.
Now it has achieved its great coup: a major military reaction of Russia. Now the Empire can have its “sanctions from hell” and a new arms race in which its European vassals will buy lots of arms.
