A lot has happened since I wrote the last items for the Saker. The situation in the south and east of Ukraine is quite fluid and changes by the hour.
Early on 24 May 2014 strong movements of Nats units began, converging on the city of Slavyansk and it’s outlying towns and villages.
One armor battalion of the Nats Army moved at speed to the east from their lager some distance away from Slavyansk. This was an ‘all arms’ movement, the tank companies consisting of upgraded main battle tanks and including at least one Oplot upgraded T80 known as T84,the usual variants of BMP tracked light armored vehicles and BTR troop carriers, many soft skin vehicles (trucks, fuel bowsers, support vehicles amongst others) and the usual large numbers of troop filled trucks. Accompanying this unit was a battery of Msta self propelled howitzers of 15.2 cm main gun size, the howitzer being in a rotating and lightly armored turret built on an older main battle tank chassis. Also in the train was at least one battery of Grad missile launchers.
This unit stopped on the outskirts of Slavyansk on 24 May and stood down for most of 25 May.
Numerous other Nats units, some armored and some not, also moved on 24 May to positions close to Slavyansk and the outlying areas. Most of these units appear to be national guard/right sector units.
Morale:
For the Nats national guard/right sector units, morale appears to be the same, most quite motivated, a few not. However, they have yet to prove they can stand and fight. This mode, ‘stand and fight’, is the essence of combat and always has been. If the Nats right sector units will not stand and fight then they are useless in any campaign and will only pursue their penchant for terror aimed at unarmed civilians with the resultant anger on the part of the civilians.
Many of the right sector units are composed mainly of young men, many veterans of the brawling in Kiev during the maidan debacle but few with military experience. It is quite one thing to stand against highly trained but unarmed police and Berkut units (unarmed meaning no weapons beyond short truncheons and shields) and rather a different experience to fight armed units who have every intention of killing you.
The consist of a combat unit is of the utmost importance when going in to combat. As I explained earlier the Nats army does not have a professional NCO corp nor does it have the tradition of such a corp and as such there are few if any combat experienced sarjanti to train and guide these totally inexperienced and poorly trained young men as they enter in to the world of War. Mentioning this failure on the part of the Nats Army and right sector units does not violate my policy of not giving them ideas to improve their units and tactics. It takes years to form, train and deploy such a cadre and in this instance they do not have the time nor the will to do so.
I have seen extant videos of these young men joyfully riding around on various vehicles, laughing and smiling. I have also seen these same young men in videos as they rolled in to a set piece ambush, I’ve seen the look of surprise turn to horror to realization they are going to die in seconds. And die they did, shot down by the people who intended to kill them in the beaten zone.
It remains to be seen how these losses, and there has been more than a few of these incidents, will affect the overall morale of right sector units. The losses to right sector have been quite large. The losses are kept secret as much as possible, however the total losses in KIA are approaching 900, possibly more, in the last 3 weeks alone. Wounded are reported to be half of that. Many of the wounded and dead are reported to be evacuated to Kharkov in a clandestine manner and treated at close facilities. We’ll leave it at that, although anyone willing to dig a little can find what and where this event happens and how. I will say this about losses, though. It is an established fact that for most units in a combat situation, either actually fighting or in lagers preparing to fight, that 10% or so of your losses are self inflicted one way or another. Accidents do happen, especially when you have a bunch of young men running around with all kinds of dangerous little items that go ‘bump’ in the night so to speak. Relatively inexperienced drivers piloting large and cumbersome vehicles do hit things, misjudge curves and embankments and roll the vehicle, weapons not treated with the utmost respect do have a nasty habit of discharging at an inopportune moment. Thus ‘non combat’ casualties are generated with surprising regularity and the dead are just as dead as if they were killed in combat. As an aside, I have always beaten in to my men, either those I was training or those I was serving with, rank didn’t matter, that there is no such thing as an ‘unloaded weapon’. Period.
Nats Regular Army units are still to an extent an unknown entity as far as morale goes. The entire army knew of the right sector attack on the Ukraine Army unit of 22 May. Since that time there have been more reports, some confirmed, of Ukraine Army units going over to the Federalist side. There have also been two reports, one patently confirmed, of Ukraine Army units that planned to either stand down or switch sides and were promptly slaughtered by right sector, the confirmed one involving 28 soldiers killed.
The tank battalion looked good and looked motivated when they were in transit. However, they have not seen combat yet. The Feds have no tanks and no air assets so any combat with tanks on the Fed side will mean someone has to do something unkind to the tanks on the ground, up close and personal. This takes experience and courage. Can the Feds do it? Yes. Will the Nats get their act together on how to use armor? That is unknown and only time will tell and I’m certainly not going to give them the slightest idea how.
Before I go in to the Federalist side morale, I first want to put to rest a phrase often heard in both media reports and civilian conversations. Late me state this once and only once. There is no such thing as a ‘bullet proof vest’. Period. The phrases used by the military are ‘ballistic armor’, ‘body armor’ and an older phrase of ‘flak vest’. This vest and accompanying accouterments do offer some protection against rounds and shrapnel but are in no way ‘bullet proof’, they are ‘bullet resistant’. The material works by dissipating the kenetic energy of an impacting object by spreading the force of the impact through the fabric around the impact sight. Some vests are far better than others depending on the development level of the manufacturer and the standards of the manufacturing contract. I know of none that will stop a modern high energy round fired from a modern rifle at less than 75 meters. Anyone who has information on the latest and greatest of these vests, feel free to correct me. These vests will normally not stop a pointed weapon, read bayonet, when used directly at the vest. However, many years ago when I was in advanced training my grizzled old Sarjant, who had fought on both the East and West Fronts during The War, made it very clear to me what would happen if he ever saw me use the bayonet when I had rounds left in my automat. I have never forgotten his graphic description, told in clinical detail, the gentlest part involving how many teeth one needs to chew a piece of bread (two are needed, according to him the rest are redundant).
75 meters you say with raised eyebrows? Yes. Look around you. Go out in the woods and look, see how far you have visuals. Go in to a town or city and look. How far can you see when huddled against a building or an alley or in a doorway? Most modern combat is at ranges of less than 50 meters unless you are on the wide open steppes or plains or desert. In built up areas this goes down to even less in house to house fighting, read up close and personal. Now, how to get around this problem will not be revealed in this writing and you know why.
Federalists.
Morale is generally quite high. They have been reinforced of late with some experienced volunteers, most notably yesterday in Donetsk City seen publicly when the Vostok Battalion arrived to the cheers and tears of the populace. I have also heard various accents in Russian, most notably the soft, almost Southern Drawl of the Chechnyans.
The Feds will fight and seem to be quite well trained, witness the losses they have inflicted on the right sector units and the very few Nats units that have attacked them at close range.
The problem for the Feds is the Nats have stand off arty up to and including the aforementioned Msta 152 cm howitzers and they have tanks, real tanks, on the edge of the combat areas now. As an aside, a ‘tank’ is not every vehicle with either tracks or wheels that has a turret and a weapon in said turret. A ‘tank’ refers to a ‘Main Battle Tank’, a heavily armored and armed vehicle with tracks and a rotating turret with a good sized piece of artillery in said turret. The Feds have no tanks to my knowledge but, reality being reality, I would not tell you if they did and I knew. They do have a very few BTR and BMP units, lightly armored and armed either fighting vehicles or troop transports.
I have seen quite modern anti tank weapons in possession of the Fed troops plus the usual RPG systems of various models. They also have surface to air hand held missiles to discourage the Mi24 attacks, which they have, and these weapons are also useful against the Sukhoi ground attack aircraft Kiev is known to possess and which have been used once on Saturday.
However, the Fed morale again seems to by very high. They will fight as they have often already. How will they stand against an all out attack by the Nats forces? That is a question I can not answer. Is Kiev willing to destroy towns and cities to achieve their ends with the resultant very high civilian casualties? I think so. Today and tomorrow may well tell the tale. What are the Fed armed forces numbers? Even if I had that number, which I don’t, I would certainly not devulge it. Better to keep your enemy guessing, in other words Operational Security. Always try to keep your enemy as ill informed about you as possible. Let him wonder and worry and be afraid of the dark.
All this being said, I have no doubts the Feds will fight to the last man. They really have no choice if it comes to an all out assault by the Nats. They either fight and defeat the Nats or fight and die standing rather than kneeling in subservance to a government that is both illegal and detested.
Will Russia intervene in the event of a blood bath? That is an unknown but I personally do not think they will.
Fighting going on at Donetsk airport since shortly after 03 today. This morning, reports are a full Rota (company, ergo 200 men if at full strength) of Kiev ‘Army’ are in the terminal. 4 choppers and 2 aircraft are in the area and there has been bombing. The main terminal is on fire hard in one wing.
A fly on the wall says there is a ‘high value target’ with the Rota of Nats troops there, to wit, an American in command. That would possibly explain their ‘stand and fight’ deal. Either that or there was a landing scheduled of Nats troops at airport to attack Donetsk from within. Airport is on the north west edge of Donetsk City with major roads to it and around it.
Two attempts have been made to ‘get someone out’, once by chopper that landed and immediately took off under fire with two others in support, no one got to the bird. An hour later 4 ambulances went at high speed to the main terminal but evactuated no one and did not leave. Possibly the ambulances contained reinforcements for one side or the other or their task was to get the target out and were not successful.
Thank you once again, “Juan”. It’s a hell of a time to be celebrating Memorial Day, but may yours be blessed (too solemn an occurrence to say “Happy”, no?) I haven’t got time to read this now (though you know I will ;~), but I did want to spread along these little tidbits from Poroshenko. If their source is credible, they certainly don’t bode well.
Paul Sonne, Moscow correspondent for the WSJ, has tweeted the following, in addition to what he calls a “Defiant Russian Orthodox rebel rap”: https://twitter.com/PaulSonne
Poroshenko: We will move toward energy independence. “This is very important.”
Poroshenko: The rebels in the east are losing the trust of the people of Donbas more and more every day
Poroshenko: It’s clear Belarus should move towards democracy and we’re prepared to help them in that direction
Poroshenko: My victory opens new possibilities not just for #Ukraine but also for Moldova, Georgia and Belarus
Good work, very good work, Saker and Juan. Thank you.
So the 64k question – has Moscow given the green light for a full scale assault (they will not intervene), or, as there have not yet been large scale attacks on civilian population centers, is the jury still out here?
Perhaps there is a sense that the feds have sufficient resources to put up a serious fight and they must sink or swim – partly depending on how much civilian support they can garner in the region. Will popular sentiment swing toward them? Or perhaps the general population does not have the stomach for a real fight and is not convinced their lot will really be improved should the fed forced succeed in some fashion…
There were some comments in previous threads about a military coup. I don’t see this as a realistic possibility. The Ukrainian military has no political experience or tradition of holding power – unlike Thailand or Egypt – and they would need the backing of at least some of the oligarch class. I give this a zero possibility unless fighting began to spread to other regions and still not very likely.

Dear Juan,
Thanks again for your update.

There is a very, very important question that needs to be asked.
What is the morale among the civilian population?
There is currently an American Senator in Ukraine (can you believe that?), and she among all other American commentators says that morale among the civilian population in the East is very low and getting lower. That the civilians in the East want the “separatists” to leave.
Is that so?
Nora
In addition to the pontifications you listed from Chocolate Man, he also said late last night that he would not speak to Russia until Krimea was returned to Ukraine. Hope he’s not holding his breath. We’ll NEVER go back.
“(Reuters) – Ukraine launched air strikes and a paratrooper assault against pro-Russian rebels who seized an airport on Monday, as its newly elected leader rejected any talks with “terrorists” and said a robust military campaign in the east should be able to put down a separatist revolt in “a matter of hours”.
Ukrainians rallied overwhelmingly in an election on Sunday behind Petro Poroshenko, a political veteran and billionaire owner of chocolate factories, hoping the burly 48-year-old can rescue the nation from the brink of bankruptcy, civil war and dismemberment by its former Soviet masters in the Kremlin.
Monday’s rapid military response to separatists who seized the airport in Donetsk was a defiant answer to Moscow, which said it was ready for dialogue with Poroshenko but demanded he first scale back the armed forces’ campaign in the east.
Even as the fighting was getting under way, Poroshenko held a news conference in Kiev where he said the government’s military offensive needed to be “quicker and more effective”.
“The anti-terrorist operation should not last two or three months. It should last for a matter of hours,” he said.
As for the rebel fighters: “They want to preserve a bandit state which is held in place by force of arms,” he said. “These are simply bandits. Nobody in any civilized state will hold negotiations with terrorists.””
That’s the view from Reuters.
This is really about the “hearts and minds” of Americans. Purely and simply.

Russia has better wise up and fast. Poshorenko is a US puppet and taking orders from Washington. He is going to do all he can to hurt Russia and Russians. It is naivete to think otherwise.
Ukraine could be a success every bit as much as South Korea is a success if it was wise and learned to play the West against Russia. In order to do that, it must put the Oligarchs in their place and not allow the West to fully dictate policy and terms. The East, namely Russia, should be kicked out altogether and the West should be invited in to help set up a parallel the Russians cannot cross without severe consequences. Russians living in Ukraine and all Baltic and Balkan states should be deported to Russia immediately. They have proven they can’t live any place beside Russia so send them home where they belong and Putin can no longer use Russians living abroad as an excuse to invade and annex. The West should do this as well. All Russians must go. Crime in the mid-Atlantic cities of America will easily drop by half Russian criminals are deported to the criminal state of Russia where they belong. South Korea did it masterfully after a few starts, stops and stutters before they got it right. Does Ukraine have the stuff? Or will it be factionalized into obscure, easily controlled mafia-statelets?
What’s Your Emergency?
“Ukraine” is a fiction. It was created by the Bolsheviks, who were following into the Polish and Austrian footsteps to weakem Russian nationalism that they feared more than anything else. A century ago, nearly 100 % of the ancestors of today’s “Ukrainians” self-identified as Rusiny (Ruthenians) or Malorossy (Little Russians). It took a genocide and a terrible load of brainwashing to turn these people into so-called “Ukrainians”. Anyone who does identify himself as ” Ukrainian” does betray his Rusin/Maloros ancestors.
” Ukraine” should turn back to what it was before: Kievan Rus a peaceful and prosperous part of the Greater Russian Civilisation. It should be restored to Orthodoxy and it should never try to act against the interests of Russians or Belorussians.
Otherwise it will die a painful death as it is already dying since 1992.
Demographics alone show that by 2050 only 30% of current “Ukrainian” population will be left to live in that “country”.
Speaking of demographics, is it true that this generation will be the first WASP-minority generation in American history?
Maybe you should worry less about the Russians living in US and more about Hispanics who do remember how your country stole their lands in Califotnia, New Mexico, Texas, Arisona and Colorado…
Old president and new president look very much like brothers.

Looks like Putin has been caught with his pants down, yet again. US is likely coordinating these attacks and all Ukraine will possibly be taken, while Putin wants to talk with those who want to destroy Russia.
Ah Nora
If everything was self-evident there would be no need for science.
Still conflating wish with possibility?
Still think the chocolate bar is of some significance?

I agree with Putin got caught with pants down again.
Why does he want to be in good side with US so bad? No one (maybe except old tradition European allies) should trust US, it can turn on anyone at any time suit its or maybe its 1% benefit. What is there to lose for Putin? The west will try to undermine Russia, don’t it already? Do you honestly think it will change anytime soon? I can not believe Russia give free gas to Ukraine, while Ukraine killing its people.
I also think today Kiev succeed at lure the Feds out in the open to slaughter them. I hope them get out of this one intact.

Ah Anonymous 18:36,
I could be equally condescending but I really don’t need to. You simply make no sense. As usual.
Go away now, don’t bother me again. I’ve got far more important things to do than deal with your nonsense.
Putin is playing good cop and Kadyrov clan leader is playing bad cop. Poroshenko is a puppet and Nudleman (Kagan) is the puppet master. Everyone knows their role. Europe has been cut at the knees they have other priorities. Poroshenko is getting ready to sue the RF for Krimea. RF is getting ready for that. In the meantime expect more regions of the Ukraine to leave the Ukraine and join Novorossya and expect more Chechen young soldiers of fortune to come and fight the empire’s mercenaries. Poroshenko has never ran a country of this size. He is clearly an apprentice. He has no experience running an insurgency of this size. The neocons have bad experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq but they never learned anything. They will screw up again and again. The neocons are toasted.
Good news.
Антифашистское подполье Одессы сообщило о ликвидации «сотника Миколы» (Anti-fascist underground Odessa reported the eradication of “centurion Mikola”)

(Via Yandex)
“On the website of supporters of the new Russia has information about liquidation in Odessa, one of the leaders of the Ukrainian neo – Nikolai Volkov, known as the centurion Mikola.
“The anti-fascist underground liquidated gang leader of the Ukrainian neo-Nazis “centurion Mikola”, who led the brutal massacre of the defenders of Odessa on the Kulikovo field and in the House of trade unions, and then launched a hunt for the people and the slave trade in the district of Mariupol”, – informs a site Новоросс.info with reference to sources in the clandestine movement of Odessa region.
The centurion Mikola was one of the most active participants in the massacre of the supporters of federalization in Odessa on may 2. The network got the video, which shows how he is shooting for people trying to escape from the fire…”
I hope the people of NovoRussia learned from the Sunni insurgents in Iraq. Quite a few MBT’s met up with IED’s. Quite a few mercenaries strung up from lamp posts.
I would always hope for peace. But if there are Chechens there, maybe the right sector might not want another Grozny?
And if the anti-fascists are going after the ringleaders of the slave trade in Mariupol (the traffickers of women to the brothels of Europe) then more power to them!
Communique #1 from the youth revolution in Amerika
Declaration of a state of war
All over the world, people fighting Amerikan imperialism look to Amerika’s youth to use our strategic position behind enemy lines to join forces in the destruction of the empire.
From the anti-fascist resistance in Novorossia to anarchist communities in Europe, throughout South America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, every social justice movement is depending on us to act.
At home, we face a militarized police state, mass surveillance, incarceration and poverty. The wars on terror and drugs are destroying our own country. Kids today know the lines are drawn – revolution is touching all of our lives. Tens of thousands have learned that protest and marches don’t do it. Revolutionary violence is the only way.
We have come to the end of our peaceful communications and negotiations – from here on out we will seize power by force.
When we win, we will work together to develop a greater degree of direct democracy for individuals and communities, using the free internet to develop a new society based on anarchist principles and communist ideals.
We are bringing the war home from Donetsk to Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago and New York.
Within the next fourteen days we will attack a symbol or institution of Amerikan injustice.

I would be most grateful for information on the organization inforesist.org
To state this overly politely, I do not trust their work.
It consistantly refutes the reports of RT.com for one thing, and when I share something from RT, I get inforesist pushed in my face.
I have been unable to discover any information about them. Poking about on their site, I discover a very bad smell, but nothing I can express articulately to push back against what to me, is clearly disinformation.
They have a kind of “clean face” and are slick.
Makes me angry.

Yup. But the stuff he’s parroting is rather unpalateable. Anonymous 17:28 called it, in terms of the “hearts and minds” (??) of Americans, but the idiots calling the shots in Washington have certainly shown they utterly unconcerned about what happens to the people over there.
вот так
I never thought I’d cheer the liquidation of anyone, even a monster like that. But a few more such liquidations and perhaps the Galician thugs and Ukrainian conscripts will find other things to do. I wonder if Greystone, or whatever they call themselves now, are afraid of Chechens. I tend to think of mercenaries as very well-trained, but I also tend to think of them as bullies…
“Juan”,
Again, thank you. I wouldn’t know a BTR from a BMP or a howitzer from a T84 but I’m still thinking a large-ish part of what’s going on is due at least in part to Kiev’s desire to rid themselves of Pravy Sektor, either temporarily or permanently. Kind of like killing two birds with one stone or something. There were rumors earlier that a lot of those guys were pretty drugged up: is that (still?) being seen? More important, it is so good to know that the Feds’ morale is so high and they’re having the successes they are — and not the least bit surprising this news hasn’t been more forthcoming, of course.
But I have another question or two for you, too: According to RT at 19:46 GMT today, “Shooting is being reported in the city of Mariupol near the headquarters of the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of Donetsk, reports local news portal 0629, citing witnesses.
HQ representatives claim that Kiev forces started storming the building using gas. They added that there are civilians, including women, inside who were hiding from the shooting.”
OK, are we talking tear gas here, or something else? If so, what? But also, how do the Kiev forces protect themselves while killing or otherwise disabling the people inside?

A very interesting comment by Puppet Master in MoA. It’s long, but very much worth reading in its entirely:
In the Brookings piece ‘B’ link, it mentioned three option for Ukraine, Ukraine as Poland, Finland or small Russia. However, there is another option. That is Korean option, the partition of Ukraine in a bloody civil war. I strongly suspect that that was their plan all along. And if it is the case, things are still working according to their plan.
I wrote this about 2 weeks ago.
http://discussion.theguardian.com/comment-permalink/35398109
———————-
In spite of everything else, Luke Harding did one great service by revealing the real plan of the Kiev regime when he reported this.
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/apr/19/ukraine-donetsk-pro-russia-militants
Todorov – a supporter of Ukrainian statehood – said he was deeply pessimistic about his country’s future. He said he doubted presidential elections due to be held on 25 May would take place, at least not in the east. And in Kiev, he suggested, there was a growing feeling that Ukraine would be better off dumping its troublesome eastern provinces and creating a modern European country without them.
I don’t think dumping the eastern provinces is an ad hoc reaction to the present crisis. It could be their plan from the beginning.
They learned their lesson from the Orange revolution. They cannot secure their power and move Ukraine to the west with the Russian speaking parts within Ukraine. Therefore they are going to lose them this time.
So, how would they achieve this goal?
Starting a civil war which will force the Russian speaking parts to leave Ukraine.
From the moment they took power, the Kiev regime has been systematically weakening and dismantling the state institutions of power, and replacing them with right wing militias. This is a sure recipe for a civil war. It all reminds me of the disbandment of the Iraqi army after the US invasion.
(2 of 3)
One Wurmser, a neocon staff of the vice president Cheney’s office, was kind enough to explain the true nature of Iraqi plan.
http://prospect.org/article/vice-squad-0
Wurmser argued that toppling Saddam was likely to lead directly to civil war and the breakup of Iraq, but he supported the policy anyway… Yet Wurmser explicitly urged the United States and Israel to “expedite” such a collapse. “The issue here is whether the West and Israel can construct a strategy for limiting and expediting the chaotic collapse that will ensue in order to move on to the task of creating a better circumstance.”
The Kiev regime is following the same plan. They disbanded the riot police, Berkut. This created a power vacuum which was filled by the right wing militia. Also without riot police, any confrontation with mass protest will be quickly militarized. Not to mention that the members of disbanded Berkut went to Crimea and joined the pro-Russian militia.
Then they repeated the same feat again with the 25th airborne brigade. The unit which refused to shoot unarmed civilians and made a nice gift of 6 armored vehicles was disbanded. I guess their equipment was given to right wing militias. I am sure many of the released personnel of the paratroopers will join the rank of the southeastern rebels.
In their place, they created the National guard, and various other militia formations, and gave them the status of nationally sanctioned armed force.
These militia formations are useless against the much hyped Russian invasion, but very good at committing atrocities against civilians.
If you want to maintain the unity of a country, you maintain the institutional cohesion of its armed force. However maintaining the institutional cohesion of the armed force also imposes certain limits on your action.
Yanukovych understood this. That is the reason why he refused to use the army to put down the Maidan protest. Once army is used against civil unrest, you cannot guarantee its loyalty and its institutional cohesion could be destroyed.
The Kiev regime also understand this. That is the reason why they are replacing the police and the army with right wing militias.
The job of these militia formations is not winning the civil war. If they win, they will end up with the unwanted Russian speaking parts again. Their job is committing enough atrocities against the Russian speaking population so that they will want to leave Ukraine.
They want bloody destruction of Ukraine and rebirth of a new pure Ukraine nation from the ashes shorn of the impure eastern parts. And they will blame it on Russia whether Russia directly intervenes or not.
(3 of 3)
Also they count on the full support from Europe and the US, once Ukraine explodes in blood and becomes the frontline garrison state in the new cold war with Russia.
It is the same deal they had with Nazi Germany. It is also the same deal South Korea got, another garrison state on the frontline of the old cold war. Because of the status as a frontline garrison state, South Korea could escape the worst of neo-colonial exploitation and could achieve impressive economic development. The Kiev regime may be expecting the same deal. At least, that is their calculation.
Therefore the Kiev regime will never participate in any negotiation which will preserve the unified Ukraine.
They can be stopped only by Europe saying in no uncertain terms that they will not get any support from Europe for their plan for divided and nationally pure Ukraine.
Therefore, Putin’s move is not aimed at the Kiev regime which is not interested in negotiation anyway. It is aimed at Europe. If Europe denies any hope for a special deal as a frontline garrison state, the Kiev regime will collapse on itself.
However European leaders are still meekly following the US leads, hoping that the procession to the slaughter house will stop at the gate. They behave like a deer caught on headlights. When will they wake up? We need their action now, before it is too late.

Those neocons may look stupid, but they are not. They appear stupide because they are doing something unthinkable, and people don’t understand what they are doing. They are not stupid. But they are not smart, either.
There are reasons why certain things remain unthinkable.
But they think by doing something unthinkable, they can outsmart people. For this, they think they are smart. But any fool can do that and think himself smart. That is fool’s smartness.
On Memorial Day, originally observed by former slaves to honor Union dead, I happened to find myself reading the Adages of Erasmus and paying close attention to his comments on war. Putin too knows war has results that cause more harm than good. Russia does not seek those consequences.

Interesting update by Juan. The amount of Nat. heavy firepower (tanks, artillery, aircraft (bombing runs),etc. brought to bear on civilian pop. in urban areas may break the will of Feds./civil pop. Thus, failure to succeed in breaking away from Kiev. Circumstances on the ground dictate but capturing/killing high value target and/or quick reaction strikes against heavy firepower may throw newly formed Nat. units into chaos and retreat. Look forward to next update… 2dogsun
@Juan,
Is it ‘coincidence’ that the NYT proclaims Months into Ukraine’s political crisis, rebels appear to be shaken and isolated?
I see pictures of APCs loaded with ‘soldiers’ riding on top of them. Where are the RPGs and IEDs to stop them? The first day of this bloody conflict, choppers were shot down faster than I could count, why can rotary and fixed wings now fly around freely ? Does anyone know?
Why War Is Inevitable
Paul Craig Roberts
http://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2014/05/25/war-inevitable-paul-craig-roberts/
Is Kadyrov the beginning of the “Friends of Novorussia”?
The following comment by anonymous strikes me as very perceptive:
Putin is playing good cop and Kadyrov clan leader is playing bad cop. Poroshenko is a puppet and Nudleman (Kagan) is the puppet master. Everyone knows their role. Europe has been cut at the knees they have other priorities. Poroshenko is getting ready to sue the RF for Krimea. RF is getting ready for that. In the meantime expect more regions of the Ukraine to leave the Ukraine and join Novorossya and expect more Chechen young soldiers of fortune to come and fight the empire’s mercenaries.
However, I have one nagging thought I cannot reconcile with the above scenario. English Russian news has all but dropped coverage of the ongoing battles – this from the time that Putin said he would recognize the May 25 elections. RT’s cheering his markedly subdued.
It strikes me as obvious that Putin made a deal – Ukraine for Syria. From the day Putin said he would recognize the election results, western propaganda about an attack on Syria, use of Chlorine gas, and the ‘illegitimate election’ has all but disappeared. When Russia pulled back its’ troops, the western jihadists in Homs surrendered and got safe passage out of Homs enabling the Syrian government to hold elections in all provinces of the Country.
For those on the ground in Novorussia, and for those in Kiev, it should be obvious that Putin will not send in the Polite men in green to come to the rescue.
For the health/sake of those of Russian culture and language I do hope that Putin, while letting the West have its way in western Ukraine and while not directly intervening, will instead follow the strategy that Obama used in Syria. I hope that Putin will encourage “Friends of Novorussia” to take up a cause that he himself cannot at this point confront.
The trap has been set for a Russian -Nato confrontation. The US wants this now, not in 5 years. China and Russia appear to be working on a time line that points to 2020 or shortly after.
Novorussia may need to sit in an uncomfortable no-man’s-land until a few more pieces are in place. “Friends of Novorussia” could enable this.
And they do not need to take the airport, just need a few craters in right place.
Les,
That is a very interesting hypothesis. And if PuppetMaster is correct — whether it’s stupidity, short-sightedness or whatever that’s driving Kiev to force a civil war onto people who originally simply wanted certain rights within Ukraine — then Putin’s Pivot East (ha!) forces Europe’s hand while Khadyrov and “Friends of Novorossiya” play the winning cards. Hopefully soon, and with all that fancy military equipment the Ukies have and the Federalists don’t yet seem to.
Another question for “Juan”, Saker or anyone else: how can the Federalists get helicopters, IEDs, the right kind of tanks, etc.? Who could provide them and how could they get them there? Is it even possible? I guess IEDs could be made locally, right? But can they be used without blowing up people’s houses? Those poor babushkas — couldn’t they maybe import the fighting to Kiev instead? (Obviously, this is not my strong suit…)

Nora,
The Viet Cong didn’t have any tanks or helicopters and they stalked the best equipped army on the planet for years until it finally had to give up and go home. Same for the Taliban, the Iraqi resistance and the Somali war bands.
What the Novorussians could really use are a passel of medium anti-aircraft guns and some light mobile artillery. I imagine they’d love to have a truck load of something like the Carl Gustav recoiless rifle. Better range than RPG’s and almost as easy to carry.
Those white flares you see the planes and helos tossing behind them are designed to decoy Infrared tracking missles. Any MANPADS launched are very likely to miss while those are being used. Those pilots would be dead ducks if Strelkov had some of the flak guns like the one Jane Fonda was photographed playing with in Hanoi.
It’s just me of course, but I’ve just never had much love for missiles.
@Les
“However, I have one nagging thought I cannot reconcile with the above scenario. English Russian news has all but dropped coverage of the ongoing battles – this from the time that Putin said he would recognize the May 25 elections.”
It is perfectly reconcilable. Were you expecting stories like “1000 Chechen Fighters Cross into Donbass” or “Chechen Fighters Destroy Nat Guard Company” in the headlines?
That would blow up both sides of the nascent Putin-Kadyrov tag-team.
The Ukraine situation is being worked out in many spheres on many levels, especially including the PR wars. Russia’s profile overshadows too many aspects of that, and provides an easy PR target. So, Putin is “pulling back” to reduce the profile, and creating the “plausible deniability” he needs at this point. If the West went in using proxies, Russia will throw them out using even better proxies.
Keeping Western public opinion at odds with their govts , and easing relations with other governments is extremely important now for Putin-Lavrov’s international political work.
Meanwhile, Kadyrov’s work is best done quietly, and as far out of the media lens as possible. The “Friends of Novorussia” won’t be holding press conferences, eating livers on Youtube, or gassing civilians. Just quiet, polite men dressed-in-anything-but-green fanning out across the countryside doing their job. Ferocious, efficient, but limited attacks, followed by misty invisibility. Better that the boys from Pravy Sektor and Western Mercs never really know who they’ll meet along the backroads of Donbass.
To support this, RT et al are publishing general stories about “clashes”, “casualties”, “civilian suffering”, etc avoiding detailed accounts, and absolutely avoiding any cheerleading. The only detail I expect from them is in cases where the Nat Guard starts retaliating for the hit ‘n runs by punishing civilians. There’s PR profit in that.
It seems everyone’s settling in for a longer term, low-intensity conflict while the other spheres work their way through the issues.
Erebus
If you read mideast news, those are radio controlled. I think Feds are really think the soldiers are their “brothers”, do not want to harm them. Otherwise, how do you explain them not using it already.
“The first day of this bloody conflict, choppers were shot down faster than I could count, why can rotary and fixed wings now fly around freely ? Does anyone know?”
they can’t.
Leader of the DNR: self-defence units bring down 2 helicopters of Ukraine’s Armed Forces
Why Russia is not helping?
Call me cynic, but invasion is when Russia enters in Ukraine after 3 days of shooting. Liberation is when Russia enters in Ukraine after 3 months of bloody mess.
The events of the past 24 hours in Donetsk are a perfect example of the Fog of War, and this article perfectly encapsulates them.
http://rt.com/news/161592-donetsk-truck-grenade-killed/
So a KAMAZ truck was hit by an RPG and 35 wounded Self Defense were killed. Or maybe 24. Or maybe just the driver was killed and the wounded made it to hospitals after all. Its certainly clear that a truck was hit by something and blown apart.
The airport was the scene of a fierce firefight involving fixed wing and rotary aircraft and a spillover from the airport into the surrounding city. The fight started because the Self Defense issued an ultimatum to the Ukrainian Army who were manning the inner perimeter to leve DNR. Or maybe the Ukrainian Army issued an ultimatum to the Self Defense who were occupying the airport to lay down their weapons and surrender. Both entirely contradictions have gone to “print” in internet reports in the past 24 hours. After the fight some group was expelled from the airport. Maybe. Possibly the Self Defense are now occupying it having taken it in a fierce fight. Or maybe its the Ukrainian Army now occupying it after expelling Self Defense. Or maybe whoever was occupying it is still occupying it, and whoever was attacking failed and fled.
2 Helicopters were shot down. Maybe. No video has been shown of any wreckage yet, but there sure were a lot of flares being dropped and reports of MANPADS being fired.
What has really happened? Its obviously unclear, but that won’t stop a whole lot of hyperventilating and pontifcating. Since we can’t even get a clear story on who was occupying the airport and who gave an ultimatum to whom, everything you read from every source should be taken with a grain of salt considering that almost all sources out there are simple fonts of propaganda.
What is clear is that there was a major firefight, and that the Ukrainian Army felt so threatened by what was happening that they called in major air support for a danger-close type strike risking valuable air assets that resulted in mass casualties both military and civilian and a path of destruction through one of the most important cities of Ukraine.
As far as the situation on the ground, its clear that DNR was able to hold a referendum in Donetsk two weeks ago, while Ukraine was not able to hold a Presidential election in even one precinct.
I just saw a clip of a joint conference of our new chocolate king and Klitchko. Saying it was pathetic would be an understatement.
The desperation to impress and serve their masters was too obvious to ignore.
I am afraid that this conflict will get much worse. I really hope not but one thing keeps nagging me:
If Porshenko would cut a deal with Russia he would not have been selected. And since the US is in desperate need for a war, this can mean only one thing: The Chocolate king will soon be making blood soaked candy.
From everything I gain from posts and comments here and at MOA I get the dominant impression that Russia has always supported eastern Ukraine, and continues to do so at a level that precisely matches the threat from the west. Russia must back away to create deniability and to pay out the lengths of rope for adversaries to hang themselves. The new president may be useful purely to create “jaw jaw not war war” – and Putin has said that all conflict resolves through negotiation (in other words, in terms of the fight, Russia can really start punching at the table, but prefers not to on the ground). Meanwhile a guerrilla war is being fought, supported on a lean yet adequate leash by Russia as the people learn their lessons about the true enemy and prove themselves.
Several weeks ago for a brief time I was hearing the thought that the west would try to bog Russia down in a Vietnam or Afghanistan type of situation – in other words that chaos on her border would work to the detriment of Russia. I wonder, has the west understood yet that eastern Ukraine can fight a fierce guerrilla war against western Ukraine for years to come and the balance sheet will show nothing but losses for the west, while Russia at a nominal cost can work daily damage against her enemy, the US? After all, who is master of this terrain here?
Every theory has its prediction of test I suppose, so mine would be that every escalation by the west meets appropriate response (and defeat) from the east, every supply need is filled, even if it always seems at the last minute. And Russia never appears in the spotlight. Yet over time, perhaps years, things change and forces continue their maneuvering in the shadows, until at some moment in a blink almost too fast to see, the decisive end to this fight will occur. And Mother Russia and whatever of Ukraine that cleaves to her will mysteriously – somehow – have prevailed.
You could call this optimistic or fantastic or a lot of other dismissive things. But if you were in combat to the death and you had all the skills that Russia has, isn’t this how you would think, and maneuver?
@ Paul,
Thanks for the link, but I’ve become so suspicious of everything that I’d like to see evidence of the wreckage of those 2 downed choppers.
I would like to thank those of you who have different opinions about what’s going on in the Ukraine. I hope more Ukrainians and Russians join this discussion, so I/we can look at the unfolding, foggy situation from different angles.
Cheers.

@The Ukrainian military has no political experience or tradition of holding power – unlike Thailand or Egypt
That’s a good observation. In Thailand and Egypt the Army had a constitutional role.
In Thailand the Army has the power to proclaim Martial Law based on a Decree of 1914 (variously ammended durin gthe time, but still in full force).
In Egypt the role of the army started in 1952 with a process of constitutionalizing the dominant role of the military in politics.

Will there be any retraction of the statements about “Right sector”/Kolomoysky massacre issued on this blog?
1/2 ..
Les expressed some interesting thoughts. The question on everyone’s mind is why hasn’t President Putin and Russia do something tangible and substantial to aid its “children” aching to return home to it’s parent’s embrace, or help them protect themselves from the warmongering-Washington-regime-supported -fraudulent-government in Kiev? NATO is unlikely to intervene if Russia invades to prevent bloodshed, so why isn’t he?
Like Paul Craig Roberts and Finnian Cunningham said, it makes not an iota of a difference if President Putin does not, as Washington and its cohorts of government-paid hoodlums will continue to propagate all sorts of lies upon Russia and him, and continue to infiltrate and stir all sorts of trouble in Ukraine and other parts of the world where Russia has an interest.
It is easy to start a war but difficult to end it. More so between nuclear powers. It is all too easy to forsee a situation where the psychopathic neocons in the Black House will win the argument for a first or preemptve strike at Russia and thereby starts a nuclear holocaust. Perhaps President Putin is all too aware of these and he therefore tries to avoid any moves that will accentuate this risk but it does not however obviate the fact that the rogue Obama Administration and the spineless EU governments have no interest in stooping their war mongering acts. And that is not acceptable.
Thus, short of sending in the troops into Ukraine which would result in redundant NATO having a reason to rejuvenate itself, thus presenting Russia a long term threat, President Putin appears to weigh that that may not be the best chess move or option if you like. Moreover, Russia’s conventional military, like China’s, are not strong enough yet to fight Amerika’s and the EU’s without suffering unacceptable high casualties in order to deter the US and NATO. They need time until 2020 to complete their military build up before they are at their can confidently face down the US, EU and Japan and their allies, assured that they will win.
The geopolitical chessboard is thus, a lot more complicated than just Ukraine as the chain reaction of events there may just force a nuclear exchange in the absence of unequal forces
Therefore the logical conclusion is to fight using proxies only. This understanding applies to both Amerika as well as Russia.
In this regard therefore, Kiev ought to be careful. This is the 21st century. Wars can be easily brought home to Kiev and any city in Western Ukraine. It does not need a rocket scientist to say that Right Sectors, Pravy group, Svoboda, and other fascist groups – who are a minority in the country – can easily be targeted by bombers and saboteurs. It is best for Kiev to consider removing its troops and call for a national referendum to partition Ukraine into separate Russian speaking and non Russian speaking countries.
Afterall Ukraine, right from the beginning seems to be an anachronism and does not really work. Better to accept that reality and get on with peace and amity so that you can go on to achieve your national or individual aspirations; Washington’s “interests’ in the form of the Brezezinski’s & Wolfowitz’s doctrine of one world government under the U.S. be damned.
cont. … 2/2
Cont. 2/2 ..
Ultimately, responsibility lies with Western Ukrainians since the ball lies now in their court. Either they exercise common sense and control Poroshenko or they will get the government they deserve which is one that will bequeath war, death and destruction – on instruction of the real MAFIA leader in the Black House upon all Ukrainians.
It doesn’t need a rocket scientist to predict such a highly plausible course of events. Do you want your grandchildren to read about that devastating war in 2014 which eventually resulted in the partitioning of Ukraine? An outcome which could had been avoided in the first place thus evading the unnecessary thousands, tens of thousands, nay hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian deaths had rational men and women took charge?
So many intellectuals, thinkers, and so many intelligent men and women in Europe, and yet history may not have been learnt here but repeated when people in power do not show character in such pivotal times.
Ahh … Mrs Merkel, you are in the key position. Either you stand up for truth and the right decisions or you do not. Maybe history books may eventually decide to label you as either the weak spineless Fraulein Merkel who failed to prevent a war which started WW III; who failed to prevent a Bully from across the Atlantic to wreak havoc on Ukraine and possibly Europe. She who in that pivotal point in history could had shaped the outcome of the European civilization but failed to.
So much responsibility is already on President Putin’s shoulders. Really Ms Merkel and Mr Hollande. Shouldn’t you also take the yoke off – the one put around your neck by Obama and gang – and do the right thing?
Hey, why am I saying all this? Afterall, I am an Easterner. The descend into chaos of European civilization shouldn’t really bother me.
Could it be that both sides are sending their disposable trouble makers to destroy each other?

The Ukraine Election
Paul Craig Roberts
Things have to change in order to remain the same. The Maidan protests were for naught. One Ukrainian oligarch has been replaced by another. Poroshenko’s palace is as sumptuous as Yanukovich’s palace. Poroshenko even served as a minister in Yanukovich’s government, and he has been part of Ukrainian political corruption for years. The only difference is that Poroshenko might choose to ally with Washington and become richer by participating in the West’s looting of Ukraine. Those poor gullible Maidan protesters. How much better off Ukraine would be if they had not allowed themselves to be used by Washington.

Re: MANPADs, flares, flack guns.
I think the first Mi-24 helicopter destroyed in Slavyansk might have been shot down with a guided Kornet or Konkurs missile. Some came with the BMDs of the 25th Airborne Brigade. Video shows the helicopter hoovering over the Karachun Mountain like a sitting duck.
What about the people living in Transcarpathia? They want autonomy too I guess …
The overall moral in the Nazi camp is obviously deteriorating even as Juan mentioned, for the right sector death squads.
But, Saker, what about their “luftwaffe”? pilots and commanders? i cant recall you have mentioned those before. They seems to be gung ho on this “terrorist extermination” project no matter what the civilian causalities and i must say that i expected at least some of them to defect to Russia.
Mikhas.
It is my gut feeling that the airport was a trap – set by Russia.
Some kind of deal has been struck which does not bode well for the Donbas Republic.
On the global scale of things (India, China, Russia, Iran, etc) the people of Donbas are small potatoes.
A multipolar “New World Order” is being constructed which will replace the “New World Order” announced by George Bush Sr in 1991. This world order will last until resource conflicts erupt into world war, so I’m not sure how it is substantively different than the last, except that DC-NYC-London isn’t the sole source of order.
It appears the evil will be shared across Dehli, Beijing, Moscow, Tehran and of course NY-DC-London.
As an American (of sorts) I am not too pleased by the coming tribulation, but understand it based upon the evil that was generated by post-WWII America.
There is a vacuum of vision among the middle class intellectuals who would put a check upon the centralizing tendencies of the elite and the anarchic tendencies of the poor. People are yapping about gay rights on one hand and “libertarianism” on the other, forgetting that when people are hungry, Civilization goes out the window.
We need to orient our various communities on virtuous living, ecology, justice, and a deemphasis of the material for the spiritual. In other words, the age of narcissism must come to an end.

LOL! You really don’t get it, do you? This is a blog, not an official outlet of a participant to the war in the Ukraine. I make no accusations nor do I make retractions. I express my *OPINIONS* based on my *ANALYSES*. In this case, I have on one side the words of Strelkov (about whose credibility I know *nothing*) versus the concurring testimony of *many* witnesses. Does his statement matter? Oh yes, sure it does. Does it matter more to me than the one of the witnesses. No. But even if you provided me with ironclad evidence that Strelkov’s forces did the attack, I could not provide a “retraction” but only a “correction” or, better, an “update”. Do you understand now? I personally never claimed to have been a witness therefore there is nothing to retract for me. I can just list the various accounts I am aware of and then chose one which appears the most credible. I will *always* go with a large number of witnesses from both sides over the words of one man I don’t care whether this one man is Putin or Strelkov. I know how much all politicians lie, and I now how much wars generate even more lies. So just words means little to me.
So stop pestering me about a “retraction” I *by definition* will never have to make, but do keep us informed of any new elements of information you come across. Who knows, you might even convince me to write up an update one day :-)
Cheers,

Obama To Authorize Weapons Training Of Syrian “Rebels”
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 05/27/2014 – 11:28
This will end well. President Obama is, according to WSJ, close to authorizing the US military to train “moderate” Syrian rebels. The move – clearly expanding Washington’s role in the conflict and a subtle side-swipe at Putin – is aimed at providing a seemingly arbitrary group of rebels with weapons training to fight against both Bashar al-Assad’s regime’s army as well as Al-Qaeda-linked groups. One quick question – how will Obama determine who is ‘moderate’ and who is full Al-Qaeda-tard?
Anon:
Could it be that both sides are sending their disposable trouble makers to destroy each other?
Its not a could be, it is what is happening. Both sides are sending in expendable trouble makers and are apparently willing to accept either outcome for fate of Novorossiya provided the trouble makers die in large numbers. This is the same strategy of Saudi Arabia – sending trouble makers to Afghanistan and Syria and Iraq to make jihad and die.
Really in the grand picture for the US and Russia, what does it matter if Rinat Akhmetov’s enterprises ship steel from Novorossiya or Ukraine? Or even if Kiev/Galacia has access to the sea in Odessa or not? The only important piece – Crimea, was seized by Russia.
Right now the only important strategic interest of Russia in what remains of Ukraine is the rocketry/defense industry in Dnipropetrovsk, especially the ongoing support mission it has for the maintenance, supply, and upgrade of the Russian RS20 nuclear missiles, including possession of all of the original design blueprints. This has been noticed in the US and a bill is being drafted in the US Congress to try to force the Ukrainian rocketry industry to end all ties and contracts with the Russian military, which would potentially cripple the Russian nuclear capability unless it is quickly replaced internally in Russia. This specifically concerns the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau and Yuzhmash firm.
It has to be understood that the value of this plant is primarily in its human capital and secondarily in the records and facility itself. If contracts with Russia were actually disrupted, a military intervention by Russia is a possibility.
Sorry for pestering you, Saker. Of course, you don’t owe anything to anyone on the internet. And Jew(or is Zionists the better term?)-Nazi thugs slaughtering UA conscripts is a much more attractive story than a simple raid of Besler’s rebels battalion. Who cares about the responsible admitting their deeds on public video and showing off the looted weapons.
The only problem(for me) is that I treated this blog as a quest for truth. From now on I will treat it as another modern mass-media(with all its outrage-generating click bait). A much better quality than what passes for journalism these days, but still mass-media.
Thanks for the lesson about the meaning of words(or the lack of such) and for a really good (no sarcasm here) coverage.
