I don’t know about the Spetsnaz but I think the grunts in the firefights really risk life and limb. They are crazy in the sense of doing what normal people wouldn’t do unless conscripted.
So here I sit in my comfortable 150 square foot home. I feel a shade of guilt but a ton of relief that I’m not at the front or on some Babel tower in the sky.
But am I really so safe? If the money balloon pops and my retirement goes down in the flood I’ll be back on the street again. And oh the folks in those high rises struggling to get down.
I’ve heard that can’t happen in exceptional countries like mine. That’s a comforting thought but I have a sneaky suspicion that it’s wishful thinking.
I walked to the grocery store this evening and passed shiny new cars, people dining in restaurants and homes inwardly lit up by TVs.
On the way back for forty minutes I walked under countryside starry skies. Made me wonder what it’s all about. I guess I’m still a teen at 75 in my dreams climbing towers and slaying dragons like St. George.
The winds are howling tonight not quite like a wailing banshee in my ancestral Ireland (the saints preserve her) but reminds me of their function, to announce an impending death in a family. If I hear an owl or a banshee tonight I’ll pray for our dying humane culture.

I remember reading – oh, about 40 yrs ago now, – a thriller I took out of the local public library about a man with a compulsion to climb high-rise buildings in buildings. In one climb be sees something he shouldn’t through a window, and it goes on from there, to end with his starting to climb a new, much higher building. So – it’s been around a while.
It seems to be a rare but widespread compulsion. Oh -I’ve never seen a female doing it. Perhaps it’s only a male thing.
