The war is far from over in Syria, however, Russia’s professional diplomatic moves have left Washington nearly no room to maneuver: the US cannot simply return to pre-2016 rhetoric and policies (at least not overtly) and push ahead with their “Assad must go” agenda, The Saker told Sputnik.
In an exclusive interview with Sputnik, The Saker, a pseudonym for a US top level military analyst, shared his views on the prospect of the Syrian ceasefire agreement, US Secretary of State John Kerry’s intriguing Plan B and the possibility of a regime change in Turkey.
In his recent article for The Unz Review The Saker underscored that the Syrian ceasefire deal is a huge victory for the Russian diplomacy.
On the Horns of a Dilemma: ‘Good Terrorists’ or ‘Moderate Head-Choppers’?
Meanwhile, experts express their concerns regarding the fact that there are scores of groups on the ground in Syria whose affiliations and sponsorship are murky. There is a lot of controversy over which of them are terrorists and which are so-called “moderate rebels.”Could anti-Assad forces on the ground and their Western backers use this vagueness to their advantage and thus set a trap for Russia and Damascus? What should Russia and Bashar al-Assad do to avoid such a trap?
“They already avoided it,” The Saker underscored.
“The way this latest agreement was framed is simple: all those who decide to participate in it are henceforth “good moderates”. All others are “bad terrorists”. Which, in practice, will translate into this: those who cease fighting are integrated into the political progress; all others are designated for annihilation. That’s it. Instead of getting caught into endless discussions about “good terrorists” and “moderate head-choppers” Russia forced the USA into a binary setup: all opposed to this process are to be wiped-off. Simple and very, very effective. There is no vagueness left,” the military analyst explained.
What are the potential prospects of the Syrian ceasefire? Will it prove efficient, like the 2013 US-Russian deal over Syria‘s chemical weapons, or will we face a Donbass-style stalemate?
“Neither. It won’t be a solid deal like the US-Russian deal on Syrian chemical weapons, but it will not be a Donbass-style stalemate either simply because the agreement and the UNSC Resolution specifically call for the complete elimination/destruction of the various terrorist organizations in Syria,” The Saker elaborated.
“So what I see are two options: either Turkey and the Saudis reignite this all and create total chaos or the Takfiris will have to move back to Iraq and Libya. Since both processes can take a lot of time, this war is far from over,” the military analyst emphasized.
Western Leaders Sick and Tired of Erdogan’s Erratic Policies
Indeed, tensions are still simmering over the possibility of the Turkish-Saudi invasion, regardless of the fact that a number of NATO members have made it clear that they will not support Turkey in the event of Ankara’s unilateral invasion of Syria. Furthermore, some experts assume that the West is harboring a regime change in Turkey, after becoming sick and tired of Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s erratic policies.US independent journalist Mike Whitney even drew parallels between Recep Erdogan and Saddam Hussein, suggesting that Washington is planning to replace the Turkish leader by setting a trap for him. Therefore, the journalist argues in his article for Counterpunch.org, the Obama administration is currently indulging Ankara’s warmongering. Does this speculation have any grounds?
“I sure hope so! The best thing which could happen to the entire region and, first and foremost, Turkey, is if Erdogan gets overthrown and sent to jail. Turkey is a very important country and it should be ruled by a civilized and mentally sane leader and not a dangerous lunatic like Erdogan. Right now Turkey is bad for the EU, bad for Russia, bad for Syria, bad for USA (they threatened to deny the use of the Incirlik air base), bad for Egypt and, really, bad for everybody besides, maybe, Israel and the Saudis (and in the case of Israel, I would not be so sure either). Turkey is the quintessential “rogue state” which needs to be stopped and turned into a responsible international actor,” The Saker told Sputnik.
Western powers are openly discussing the possibility of partitioning Syria and have no scruples about encouraging Ankara “to defend itself” from an alleged threat from Syrian Kurds, located in northern parts of Syria. How can Syria avoid its disintegration?
The country can avoid dissolution “by insisting on the respect of all relevant Security Council Resolutions which have specifically called for a unitary secular Syria,” The Saker answered.
“It is possible that Turkey will try to make a “Cyprus v2″ happen and occupy a part of Syria, but neither the Syrian government nor Russia or Iran will let Turkey do that. If the Turks go ahead with this folly, Kurdistan will explode and the Turks will get full Russian and Iranian backlash,” the military analyst suggested.
‘US Neocons are Furious About the Russian Victory’
But is it possible that the US hawks and their CIA-trained proxies on the ground would try to throw a monkey wrench into the Syrian peace process?”Absolutely,” The Saker answered.
“For one thing, there are clear signs of infighting inside the various US agencies, Pentagon, CIA, DoS, etc. It is also clear that the Neocons are furious about the Russian victory. Furthermore, both the Israel lobby and the Saudi lobby will put all their resources together to pressure the White House into a more confrontational stance,” the military analyst told Sputnik.
“We have already heard of the so-called “Plan B” and even discussions about a possible partition of Syria,” he noted, referring to US Secretary of State John Kerry’s latest initiative.
On February 24 John Kerry hinted at the possibility that Washington may take a more aggressive stance on Syria, including the partition of the country, if the ceasefire and political transition fails.
“If the Russians and Iranians aren’t serious about having this [Syrian peace process] work, then we got to go to a Plan B, which may be more confrontational and may wind up carving things out,” Kerry told the Senate Appropriations Committee.
According to The Saker, the easiest way to sabotage the deal is to allow Turkey and Saudi Arabia to intervene. The military analyst emphasized that he does not believe for one second that Western warhawks will accept the current situation.
“This in no way makes the Russian victory lesser because the US has already committed, through a UN Security Council (UNSC), to a unitary and secular Syria. Likewise, the US has already committed not only not to support terrorists groups, but also to fight against those who, like Turkey, make money from this war and finance Daesh [ISIS/ISIL],” the military analyst told Sputnik.
“This will not prevent the US from, yet again, reneging on these commitments, but it will make it much harder for the US to justify doing so,” he pointed out.
“Simply put, the US cannot simply return to pre-2016 rhetoric and policies, at least not overtly, and that is, indeed, a huge victory. But the war is far from over,” The Saker stressed.
‘At Least for Now Cool Heads Have Prevailed in the West’
Since Turkey is a NATO member state, Ankara’s potential conflict with Russia or Iran in Syria could lead to undesirable consequences, to be more precise — to a direct conflict between the NATO bloc and other geopolitical players. Can the conflict in Syria evolve into a greater war between Russia and NATO?”Potentially, most definitely. But there are signs that the USA and NATO don’t like the way Erdogan is trying to use them and force their hand into a highly dangerous confrontation,” The Saker stressed.
“At least until now, cool heads have prevailed both in Europe and the US and Erdogan was apparently told that “we are not going to cover your crazy policies”. I hope that this will continue. For all the disgust Russia feels for the West, the Kremlin will immediately work constructively with any Western leader willing to be pragmatic and minimally fair. If the West wants to finally sit down and pragmatically begin to find solutions to each major international problem one by one, then Russia will do her part and help,” he elaborated.
“But the language of confrontation and threats must stop,” the US military analyst warned.

For how long can you hold a country split in two ?
A very interesting article. I think it is sadly, correct. And people must make the choice in the end.I just hope they make the right choice.
despite some mistakes about The Saker’s bio, the article is nice… love it!
Well done.
Goes hand in hand with the earlier article by Alexander Mercouris
Dear The Saker,
The impotent Obama’s reaction from RT site:
“US President Barack Obama has extended sanctions imposed on Russia over the Ukraine conflict for one more year. “The actions and policies addressed in the Executive Orders continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the US,” the White House said on Wednesday. “Therefore, I am continuing for one year the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13660,” according to the document. The Executive Order was issued on March 6, 2014 and was followed by more Executive Orders on March 16 and 20, 2014 and on December 19, 2014 on Crimea, TASS reported. The sanctions are applicable to a number of Russian citizens, including state officials. They also concern officials of the government of Ukraine’s former President Viktor Yanukovych. A number of Russian companies and businessmen, and the leaders of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk Republic in eastern Ukraine also fell under the sanctions.”
The Neocons impotent response:
Again on RT news (but not on website) – the US House Foreign Affairs Committee has passed a resolution accusing Syria and Russia of war crimes and asking for an international tribunal of the alleged crimes (sounds a bit like Porkie and Co’s MH17 debacle…..we are all aware who runs Ukraine….Anyway – good luck with that – it will expose every war crime committed by the US and its Saudi/Turkish et al minions.
The ridiculous response of the Saudi’s and their GCC minions:
Lets class Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation. I think we can all see where this is going – Lebanon the new frontier.

Thanks for that link.
Very good to see that Assad is not the boogeyman the western MSM make him out to be.
I now understand the incredible deal provided by the cease fire thanks to this succinct interview. If a faction fails to sign up for the cease fire, they’re terrorists. As you point out, this allows Russia to continue against the terrorists without any valid charges of breaking the cease fire. The coordination of US and Russian military groups should go well according to the Hersh article. http://www.lrb.co.uk/v38/n01/seymour-m-hersh/military-to-military#onepass
Erdogan may have offered nominal endorsement of the cease fire but the writing is on the wall. Turkey is going to be the patsy as the corporate media shifts its narrative. http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2016/02/erdogan-syria-russia-ceasefire-peace-terrorist-obama-jihadi.html Turkey has been ‘Playing Lee Harvey’ for NATO for a while. http://www.thepeoplesvoice.org/TPV3/Voices.php/2012/10/06/turkey-plays-lee-harvey-for-nato-plotter The AKP folks forgot how that drama ended.
Instead of getting some of the Saker’s bio wrong, the interviewer could have just quoted Revelations 2:2: “I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil.” Good works are what count.
Interesting (and positive) analysis. I remain hopeful for a better future.

Empire/Nato already are occupying Turkey. Empire/Nato have been working toward destabilization of the Turkish State for the last few years. Erdogan was merely a puppet following Empire’s dictates until they suceeded in pushing him into a corner using their Kurdish proxies. I am in no way endorsing Erdogan in any way shape or form. You must only look back a few months to the SU-24 shoot-down to find evidence for his compliance to Empire/Nato’s commands.
Well said. Turkey and the Kingdom are both patsies for the AZE: when the time comes both states will be demolished. If anyone is aware of the Oded Yinon plan and its successors, you will see both states earmarked for balkanization.
I do disagree with you about the shooting down of the Russian bomber — that was Erdogan’s frustration at the AZE’s refusal to take on Russia. Perhaps (and too far, far too late) Turkey now realizes that all the promises made about a new Ottoman Empire was just the bait to lure the country into a quagmire.
If the above is true then Russia is just as complicit in AZE machinations and is actually part of the AZE. My heart tells me I’m wrong but my head is warning me that it is all too neat, .e.g. why are Russian planes not being downed by US stingers, like in Afghanistan of old?
KABUKI 101 :D
” why are Russian planes not being downed by US stingers, like in Afghanistan of old?”
I don’t know the answer to that. But I can tell you what I would have done (and would do) about that issue. I would have had my military talk to the US military. And say,Russia isn’t the USSR. And if you let the terrorists have those weapons to kill our pilots. We will “go to the source to destroy them”. We will missile the bases “in any country” that they come from. And if it means war,it means war.The Soviets made a huge mistake in Afghanistan by not bombing Pakistan and Saudi Arabia for aiding the terrorists in those years. Neither the US nor the USSR wanted war then. And if the US saw that the Soviets were serious about protecting their troops they would have stopped. But they didn’t. And like all bullies,a victims weakness only makes then get attacked more. Hopefully modern Russia won’t repeat that error.
I know the answer, the US simply does not dare treat Putin’s Russia the way they treated idiot Gorbachev’s Soviet Union. The US position in the Middle East is, as the former Stratfor Chairman George Friedman stated, extremely delicate. Following the Iraq debacle, & a defeat in Afghanistan as well, at the hands of the same Pashtun militias that the Soviet Union was able to effectively fight, the real weakness & limitations of US military power has been exposed. It is what made Russia so confident in the first place to begin challenging the US more affirmatively in international affairs, but with upgraded Russian military technology, the US does not dare weaken its position in the Middle East even more by assisting with shooting down Russian planes. There would be nothing to stop Russia shooting down theirs & that would be WW3. Plus, with the jamming tech that Russia has deployed, US military maneuvers in the East Med are even more limited. They, the US, have searched for all kinds of methods to employ against the Russian intervention in Syria & it is clear that even now they are still toying with the idea of backing a Turkish invasion, although this is extremely unlikely now, hence Erdogan’s frustration. So they simply have no options, it must be remembered that what control the US still has over the MIddle East can not be further undermined due to the relation of oil collateral to the US Dollar, without it, the Dollar ceases to be a global credit & trading currency & the Anglo Empire ends that second. This is why the drama in Syria began in the fist place, they could not attack Iran direct as they had planned under Bush Jnr., & so they went after Syria with a proxy force set up by the GCC & Turkey – as a means of containing Iran. Now that has blown up in their face & they are in deep trouble. Another thing, Russia intervened in Syria as a kind of response for Ukraine, read Friedman on this in the interview he did for Kommersant, he reveals a lot, among other things that the US used Ukraine against Russia for preventing them from bombing Syria in the first place, in 2013 August. Russia flipped the script on them by not resorting to a war against NATO in Ukraine but by going into Syria, where as Friedman said, in the Middle East the US position is extremely vulnerable. This was a brilliant move & has check mated the Atlanticist Empire.
Beyond the hype, the terrorists were not able to destroy that many planes. In fact they have shot down more US planes than soviet ones.. The soviets only lost like 2 dozen planes over 10 years and half were destroyed on the ground and not by SAM but RPG’s. Remember they took out 31 seals with an RPG.. So that one plane an year taken out might just have been luck. The terrorists in Syria do have stingers and better SAM’s. The ones that can take out air craft at 30,000 feet would also easily take out all passenger liners and you bet they would end up taking down planes out of the sky all over the globe starting with Europe.
There are also tactics against SAM’s and you saw how the Russians cleared out terrorists nests by hiding behind other tall buildings of a couple of floors.. Effective SAM’s require big machines like the BUK or S300 systems etc which can be detected.. Even turning on the radar lock would pinpoint the location anywhere in Syria and I bet some cruise missiles found their way over to them. So who is going to provide these highly modern and technological wonders to terrorists and these very same imperial countries are the ones that’s at war in a dozen different places might find their own planes being shot down by their very own weapons.. Kind of like how Hezbollah now have these very same SAM’s and those low flying Israeli bombers might be a thing of the past as well. But F22’s operating in Syria? Might mean they have provided advanced SAM’s to terrorists and don’t want to get themselves shot down.

For all those starry eyed people who seem to be holding up the Donald as some sort of messiah who is going to save America because “he is self financed and not like the others” his latest statement might therefor come as something of a shock.
Trump has just announced that if he becomes president he is going to create a “safe zone” in Syria which will be paid for by the gulf states. So tell me, how is this buffoon in any way different to “we came, we saw, he died” killary or any of the other freaks currently running for president ? And dont even mention the “socialist” Sanders, what a bunch of freaks.
Six more months of the USA ‘Punch and Judy Show’ for the 99% mental cretins to choose between fingers on the same left hand (and that is not political ‘left’, but rather the ass-wiping left hand)!
https://img.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_1484w/2010-2019/WashingtonPost/2015/08/05/National-Politics/Images/GettyImages-843167781438806851.jpg
The “safe zone” that Mr Trump mentioned in some of his speeches is a safe zone in the correct sense: a safe zone in Syria for refugees fleeing combat zones-making them internally displaced and not as refugees risking their lives and paying smugglers to get them to foreign shoes. And the Gulf states are going to pay for that.
If you think deeper for a moment what this means:
1) The USA finally doing something to correct some of her mistakes and actually helping Syrians
2) Turkey, Saudi Arabia and their minions would have to recognize the safe-zone created by the President or risk “getting fired”
3) Some of those gulf states sponsoring terrorism in Syria get to pay for it
4) No infiltration into the USA by ISIS, AQ and other radicalized useful idiots
5) Doing that means cooperation with the Syrian government and Russia
Mr Trump is bold and clever!
With all due respect Ali, you are talking a load of boll*cks. The majority of Syrian refugees are already internally displaced within government controlled areas, roughly some 7-8 million Syrians, and they dont need the Americans to set up any so called “safe zones” for them to be paid for by the very wahabi scum ruling in the gulf states who are waging this genocidal war on them in the first place.
And somehow I dont think they will be asking the permission of the legitimate government of Syria to set up this “safe zone” which in turn will constitute an invasion of a sovereign state and an act of aggression against the Syrian government.
Hi know the truth, I understand your skepticism and I know the heart of darkness that is at play in Syria.
However, I’ve seen quite enough of the bodies of dead Syrian soldiers and Hezbollah resistance fighters that were shot and blown to pieces to make me realize that the fastest way to end this carnage in Syria and also Yemen is a reversal, or even the mere halt of the current destructive foreign policy of the Anglo-American empire. Personally, the main head of the beast is the USA and Trump might become the Putin of America. What???
Sure, Trump is not Putin. Some of the things Trump said does not make sense to a non-American like me. However, the major issues that he stands for, in particular, the refugee problem, defeating ISIS and working with Russia to deal with problems does make a lot of sense to me. I am not naïve to believe that whatever he will do as president comes from a heart of gold to help Syria, Yemen or any country. But I can see a practical man who sincerely wants to lift his country out of the path of ruin with a considerable dose of common sense, boldness and talent. Isn’t this is what Putin struggles for, even to this day?
It is the talented practical application of common sense and his flamboyant boldness that might reduce and stop the massive carnage that is happening now. If the main head of the beast is convinced that the alternative is a better course for them, would it not will the rest of the beast to follow its command? It wont be easy, yet the sapling of peace might grow from unlikely places. If it does manifest itself, I will be committing the same evil as those black hearted men of power, in stamping out that precious sapling just because it grew from the filthy head of the accursed beast?
If Trump wins the presidency and proves to us he is the real deal and the body which the sapling of peace grows from, he will get the same admiration and mental support that Putin gets from me. Putin showed that it can be done in Russia, though with great difficulty and setbacks. May providence permits Trump do the same in America.
I do think your faith in Mr. Trump is misplaced. I agree with him on a few issues like his position against TTP. I´m not into demonizing anyone. Yet, Mr Putin comports himself as an intelligent, competent, respectful human being. He demonstrates skill in diplomacy and follows international law. Mr Trump, on the other hand has never held a position of public service. He is a domineering bully, who presents a coarse, indeed vulgar discourse of blame and self aggrandizement. His business record is rife with sleaze and taking advantage of others, using his wealth and notoriety as a cudgel to get what he wants. He reminds me of a toddler grown old; self centered and oblivious of any higher development.
While it can be entertaining to hear him transgress all polite codes of conduct, it does nothing to further a real dialog on issues or solutions. In his declarations we see a shoot from the hip declaration of a mediocre intellect.
Someone else already answered..
But SA has a safe zone for 5 mil with air and laying empty, not a single Palestinian or Syrian in there.. actually no one is there.. Just miles and miles of empty houses in the desert..
Many of the countries responsible for this genocide have not taken a single refugee.. Turkey only did so they had leverage with the EU to blackmail them. Also with millions of people moving it is easy to transport trucks full of weapons to their favorite terrorists. Remember, most of these refugees are Sunni’s the supposedly ethnically cleansed ones..
Guess the ceasefire don’t extent into Jordan.. a terrorist got to do what a terrorist got to do.. Someone is sending large amounts of weapons to Lebanon just like they started with Libya and Syria.. Now this.. Pakistan says look at the 3 monkeys for answers.. They know nothing.. After 50 years of supporting terrorists they have turned deaf dumb and blind.. Except when the weekly market bomb blows up a few dozen people.. When was the last time anyone even mentioned Pakistan?

I guess we know the truth…
There are a lot of things not to admire about the pragmatism of Russian’s approach to global affairs. But there are things to admire too. Russia’s willingness to ‘work with’ it’s international ‘partners’, all of whom seem to be raging monsters, seems to be maintaining a tenuous global peace. One has to wonder if the whole thing is a charade though, meant to distract us from more important matters, such as the growing global fascist government.
Pragmatism – live to fight another day? Russia being much less powerful than the US in all areas apart from nukes needs to fight guerilla style. pick there ground and only fight where they can win.
The current Russian Federation seems to be one of the few countries that is not based on any form of ideology (neither communism nor US style capitalism and free markets) or religion.
Technically Russia has free markets now. You can open up a business in a professional atmosphere and prosper without harrasment by government thugs who want to measure out your success and prevent it from getting too great (communist “fairness”) or to get a piece of the action (90s hell) atleast for the most part. Its a bit heavily regulated but not much more then say Germany or the US.
“who want to measure out your success and prevent it from getting too great (communist “fairness”)”
We’ve seen what happens (always) when major companies become too large. They spawn oligarchs who become a law onto themselves. An elite who dominate the governments in countries. Only furthering their own interests, even when they conflict with the needs of the citizens in those countries. When its a choice (which it always becomes) between controlling the size of those companies,or allowing them to get “too big to fail”. Then I’ll always go for the controls.
Problem is that it takes government collusion to make an oligarch. They don’t appear easily without laws designed to stifle their competition. Its that corporatist fascist side of the balance.
Ever read Alexander Hamilton’s political-economic plan for the development of the United States he prepared while Treasury Secretary? Now you know why he’s depicted on the $10 Bill. Derided at first, yes, but later adopted whole-heartedly.
Hamilton got put down like a rabid dog and deserved it. No one with any extensive knowledge of that period of history can like Hamilton. He planted the seed for the Federal Reserve and other quasi-independent predecessors that inflated away the money supply while enriching a small cabal of bankers and political chronies.

article-Turkey supplying arms in concert with Saudi to Lebanon to attack Syrian soft underbelly??????
There are forces starting to maneuver for a war in Lebanon. Several incidents have occurred over the last few weeks between Saudis and their allies and Lebanon is the target. I was wondering if this was going to be perverted into an attack on Hezbollah, well it is:
https://southfront.org/gcc-declares-lebanons-hezbollah-terrorist-group/
“GCC DECLARES LEBANON’S HEZBOLLAH ‘TERRORIST’ GROUP
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has classified Lebanese movement Hezbollah as a “terrorist” organisation, citing “hostile actions” by the armed wing of the group.
On Mar.2, GCC Secretary General Abdullatif al-Zayani said that 6 GCC members states made the move because “the [Hezbollah] militia recruited young people [of the Gulf] for terrorist acts”.
The Saudi-led GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Hezbollah, a Shia political organisation located mainly in Lebanon. In Syria, its armed wing is fighting alongside the government of President Bashar al-Assad against Sunni militant groups [ISIS, Al Nusra etc].
Hezbollah is backed by Saudi Arabia’s regional rival Iran, with whom relations have worsened this year. Saudi Arabia and Iran are on opposing sides in conflicts in Syria and Yemen.
The GCC decision was made amid Saudi Arabia’s political and military failure in Syria where Saudi-backed militant groups were pushed to peace or recognized “terrorists” according to the US & Russia promoted ceasefire.”
Is this a pretense to attack Hezbollah in Lebanon?
If they want to declare war against Hezbollah. That is very unwise for them. That frees Hezbollah (a non-state) from abiding by state constrains. They would then be free to attack those states with any and all resources they have available. Which is of course what they should have done months or years ago anyway. I suspect they would have, if Syria ,Iran, and Russia hadn’t convinced them not to. They should now “take off the gloves”. And start “actively” supporting resistance groups in those countries. Again ,something that “should” have been done a long time ago. Making it a living hell for the regimes in those states (especially Bahrain,Saudi Arabia, and Qatar),besides being justice for their crimes. Would also give them serious problems to worry about at home. And force them to stop meddling in Syria and Lebanon. When your busy with war at home. You don’t have the time or resources available to interfere in other nations. A proven policy that was even known during the Roman Empire times.
“Roman times….” HeHe! Yeah, that’s why the Visigoths were allowed to move from the region where Albania is now to Iberia and thus solve two problems with one policy decision.
yes, saker.
And since the kremlin has already won this diplomatic&political stage of the conflict, Putin can now boost the gas pedal on one or two military targets on the ground.
Because washington and berlin understand this language a bit more easily.
In yesterday’s WP or NYT, to describe Syrian army, used term “Governemt forces”, “not “Regime forces”. Quite a change, eh :-)
I noticed the same thing a few days ago in Reuters.
This isn’t new news to the Saker readers but the British vassal bloviator has finally caught up with it:
Migrant crisis: Russia and Syria ‘weaponising’ migration
“Russia and Syria are deliberately using migration as an aggressive strategy towards Europe, the senior Nato commander in Europe has said.”
“US Gen Philip Breedlove said they were “weaponising” migration to destabilise and undermine the continent.
He also suggested that criminals, extremists and fighters were hiding in the flow of migrants.”
The second redundant sentence is there to reinforce the first and headline to bake in the ‘weaponising’ meme.
The last sentence -Duh! You think, maybe?
Aside from the last sentence it is amazing how you can just take the polar opposite of what NATO says to arrive at truth. Are the EU countries really that credulous?
The MIC must be miffed that they missed profiting directly from this ‘weaponising’. Don’t they have a monopoly on weapons?
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35706238
““US Gen Philip Breedlove said they [Russia and Syria] were “weaponising” migration to destabilise and undermine the continent.”
NATO has no shame does it ? After US/NATO created the chaos and the refugee flows from Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria (and Ukraine, although not affecting Europe), they blame…Russia.
Regarding Lebanon, Hezbollah has been declared a “terrorist” organization by the GCC and 2 articles from Moon of Alabama regarding this possible new front against Syria.

Syria: A Turkish-Saudi Countermove In Lebanon Threatens Latakia (Updated)
“Some Turkish, Saudi or CIA strategist may have had the same thought, or may have taken up Balanche’s idea:
Cargo ship from Turkey full of weapons seized by Greek authorities
According to Greek and Turkish sources, a cargo ship containing thousands of weapons, ammunition, and explosives was seized by Greek authorities on February 28th. The ship– sporting a Togo flag– had reportedly left a Turkish port in Izmir and was traveling to Lebanon as well as the southeastern African coast.
The above source is not always reliable, but Elijah J. Magnier, reporting from Syria for the Kuwaiti paper AL RAI, just confirmed the news:

The ship was carrying 6 containers of which 2 full of weapons designated to a harbour in #Lebanon, intercepted at #Greece Crete #Island.
Very alarming indeed & shows a possible escalation planned n #Lebanon when the #SaudiArabia / #Hezbollah/#Iran relationship is at its worse.
This indicates that #Lebanon is no longer outside the circle of the war in #Syria and is supposed to be dragged in
It is unlikely that this is a purely Turkish operation. The Saudis do have enormous influence in Lebanon due to their frequent bribes paid to the various actors there. The general Saudi influence is now somewhat diminished. None of the major Lebanese followed the Saudi’s demand to take its side and to seek conflict with Syria or Hizbullah, the Lebanese Shia party that supports the Syrian government. But there are still groups in Lebanon, especially Salafis, which the Saudis essentially command…
…The now caught ship is likely the result of Saudi and Turkish cooperation. The idea is reckless as it could throw Lebanon back into the terrible years of the Lebanese civil war. But the idea is also very bold which lets me believe that its origin is neither Saudi nor Turkish.
The weapon ship may not have been the only or the first one. It is quite possible that some weapons have already reached the Sunni quarters of Tripoli in north Lebanon. In 2012 some fierce fighting erupted between the Alawite enclave in Tripoli and some Sunni neighborhoods. Then the Lebanese army intervened to calm the fighting down.
With weapons for some 10,000 men and lots of dollars to pay them, a serious threat to the soft underbelly of Syria could be implemented within a few weeks. An attack from the Tripoli area northward into Latakia would open a new dangerous front against the Syrian government. Hopefully the Syrian government and Hizbullah are prepared to squelch such a campaign in its infancy.”
Kerry’s “Plan B” – Attack Syria From Lebanon – With Saudi and Turkish Help
“…The Turkish-Saudi weapon smuggling into Lebanon is an explanation for the claim Kerry made. Syria and Russia are in the process of closing off the Syrian-Turkish border. If the Saudis can build a weapon pipeline into north Lebanon it will become quite difficult for Syria and its allies to hold the Syrian territory near the Lebanese border.
In a speech yesterday Hizbullah chief Nasrallah discussed the general Saudi threat to Lebanon at length but did not mention the Sunni militia plot:
“Saudi which treats Yemen, Syria, Iraq, and Bahrain like that, treats Lebanon the same way,” Sayyed Nasrallah concluded, addressing the Saudis: “Your problem is with us, it is not with the country or with the Lebanese…”
Nasrallah is right, but the Saudis will not care when the Lebanese people or their country get hurt due to some nefarious scheme to attack Syria and Hizbullah. Nor will the United States.
There are obvious signs for a plan to use Saudi controlled Sunni militia from Lebanon against the Syrian government and its supporters. The U.S. is, in my view, very likely involved in this plot. But we still do not know if this plan will ever be implemented. The recent Saudi threat to send its army into Syria turned out to be a pure (dis-)information campaign to unsettle the Syrian government’s side. The recent revelations about the plot in Lebanon and the “Plan B” may also be pure deception and illusionary to gain some leverage for the coming negotiations.
But the ship the Greek coastguard caught was real and such a plan would have a good chance to create lots of troubles for Syria and its supporters. My advice to the Syrian government and its allies is to prepare now to eventually counter it.”

‘After Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and UAE on Tuesday advised their citizens to leave Lebanon unless it is really necessary for them to stay, today also Kuwait and Qatar advised their citizens to do the same. In a statement by their embassies they also called on the citizens who are attending to travel to Lebanon to reconsider their plans.
Even though these five countries issued very similar travel alerts they did not submit any clear evidence about any possible security threat for their citizens.”
It does appear that the Saudis are about to try something. I hope Hezbollah and the Christian Lebanese (and Druze) together counter that. Let there be “no doubt” that if the Saudi backed jihadis were to win against Hezbollah they would turn on and slaughter the Christians and Druze next. Both those groups are considered infidels by the jihadis.Every Christian and Druze there should support Hezbollah to stop that. Those that don’t have a death-wish and have signed their own suicide pact with the devil.
As I concluded in https://ludwitt.wordpress.com/2016/02/28/syria-ceasefire-48-hrs-in-signs-of-western-media-disinformation-appear/
There are currently two factions within the United States Government who are calling for different approaches on Syria.
The realists who include Secretary of Stare John Kerry seem to genuinely want to resolve the Syrian conflict by allying with the Russians against the larger threats (ISIS and – as recent reported in NBC news – a resurgent al-Qaeda).
Meanwhile the Hawks who include the Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and the CIA, are wanting to use this opportunity to “punish” the Russians as a Wall Street Journal (typically favored by the Hawks along with the Washington Post in contrast to the New York Times typically favored by the State Department) article made clear a few days ago.
Obama, is keeping the lid down on this infighting for now with some tough words for Russia to mollify his hawkish critics while quietly pursuing a realism based strategy, but some of the silence from the US Government could be attributed to the debate within the administration not fully resolved.
If the US Government – instead of using the various hotlines and resolution mechanisms available – insists on publicly accusing Russia of breaking the ceasefire, the hawks would seem to have the upper hand. Expect the media to let loose as I forecast.
well I dunno about Kerry-he comes across as a complete ditherer just going through the motions to try and solve a situation and create glory from a USA perspective but with another agenda in mind, is he being let loose to a point where he is expendable..cos the others will do anything to degrade the Rus position ……..is this why Lavrov is so friendly to try and keep one person trying to bring peace to Syria………..
LONDON, March 3./TASS/. British Prime Minister David Cameron, Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande will discuss the ceasefire in Syria in a conference call on Friday, Downing Street reports.
“Tomorrow is an opportunity for the leaders of the UK, France and Germany to come together… and make very clear to President Putin that we need this ceasefire to hold, to be a lasting one and to open the way for a real political transition,” Cameron’s spokeswoman told reporters on Thursday.

note The government of Lithuania intends to maintain sanctions against Russia as long as Moscow will not return the “taken” Crimea back to Ukraine. Perpetual restrictions against Moscow would become a new milestone in the evolution of anti-Russian policies of the official government in Vilnius.
“We will never recognize the illegal occupation and annexation of Crimea, which began two years ago. We will strive to apply European and international sanctions to the Russian Federation over the occupation of the Peninsula until Russia will withdraw from the illegally occupied territory,” – said the statement of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, “on the occasion of the second anniversary of the occupation of the Crimea”. Thus, the anti-Russian policy of Vilnius began to approach a new milestone: Lithuania unequivocally came out in favour of eternal sanctions against its Eastern neighbour.
Lithuania yesterday tried out the role of the director of the containment of Russia and insists on using a “political whip” against the Kremlin. So, in 2008, the government in Vilnius vetoed negotiations between Moscow and Brussels on a visa-free regime between Russia and the European Union.
The ruling elite of Lithuania, alone, refused the Europeans the right to move freely in the space from Lisbon to Vladivostok.
Unilaterally Vilnius became the European closed doors to Russian citizens. Lithuanian officials gained prohibition of entry of the Russian political scientist Sergey Mikheev to all countries of the Schengen zone, a proponent of the good – neighbourly relations between Brussels and Moscow. Diplomatic hawks in Vilnius actively lobbied for the introduction and expansion of “black listed” Russians who Brussels must apply individual restrictions to.
In the rhetoric of the Lithuanian political elite, the neighbour to the East has gradually become the root of all evil, not only to the independent Baltic Republic but Europe too. With the failure of the “Eastern partnership” program, which Lithuania and a number of its European adherents consistently variegated in anti-Russian colors, the policy of the government in Vilnius is, of course, to blame Russia. Naturally, Moscow was the sole cause of the Ukrainian tragedy. ”

“MOSCOW, March 3. /TASS/. First deputy chairman of the Defense and Security Committee of the Russian Federation Council upper house of parliament Frants Klintsevich said on Thursday that in his view, by extending for one year the sanctions against Russia the United States has made it clear that strategic cooperation with Russia is impossible.

Obama extends anti-Russian sanctions imposed over Ukraine for one more year
“The US policy toward Russia has not changed. This conclusion indisputably follows from the US President Barack Obama’s executive order to extend the anti-Russian sanctions for another year. They have made it clear to us that any strategic cooperation between the two countries is out of the question,” the official told reporters.
The parliamentarian said in this connection that he is certain that “the Russia-US agreement on Syria conveys nothing.” According to him, the Americans “are traditionally doing only what is profitable for them, and if the situation changes they may well backtrack.” “This, of course, does not mean that we cannot interact with them to address some specific issues, but at the same time we must be prepared for all eventualities,” Klintsevich said.

Dreadful Premonition: Is ‘US Plan B on Syria a WWIII’?
In his recent op-ed article for Politico Magazine, US attorney and nephew of US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy — Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wrote that the US decided to remove Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from power after he refused to back a Qatari gas pipeline project.
The CIA went ahead with this plan after the multi-billion dollar pipeline project first surfaced in 2000, years before the Arab Spring uprising in Syria took place.

The Turkish authorities have not allowed a helicopter with the Minister of Defence of Germany, Ursula von der Leyen, to land at the airport of the city of Mytilene on the Greek Island of Lesbos. According to TV channel Skai, Erdogan’s government explained the decision by saying that it is a demilitarized zone, and therefore flying a military helicopter is impossible.
Frau von der Leyen was planning on visiting the island on March 6th to personally assess the situation of the refugees, and then, via a NATO helicopter, fly to the German ship “Bonn” in the waters of the Aegean sea. Now the head of the German Defense will have to adjust her plans.
By the way, this is not the first time when the notorious Turkey has protected its airspace, or even objected to leading figures of the world using its airspace. Earlier, a private plane was denied flight over the territory of the Republic of Turkey with the Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras, who was travelling to Iran.

A council of elders previously held a meeting in the Marzaf settlement where Mubarak with the mediation of Russian officers of the Coordination Center for reconciling the warring sides in Syria signed with the local authorities another agreement on starting the peace process in the settlement.
