On Thursday, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies announced start of the Operation “Grand Dawn” in eastern Syria. The aim of the operation is to expel militants from the eastern desert and to set a foothold for a push to Deir Ezzor. The declaration followed a major success of government forces in southeastern Homs where they had liberated about 5,000 km2 and got a full control over the Damascus-Palmyra highway.
ISIS deployed a force for a counter-attack but its formidable military convoy was fully destroyed by the Russian Aerospace Forces and the Syrian Air Force en route to the Zaza triangle area. Thus, the terrorist group defense lines just collapsed.
The government advance south of the Homs-Palmyra highway also allowed government forces to isolate Jaish al-Islam militants in eastern Qalamoun and to prevent their attempt to unite efforts with US-backed militant groups operating near the Syrian-Jordanian border.
A new photo appeared online showing a Russian-made self-propelled 2S19 Msta-S self-propelled howitzer with the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in Syria. The modern howitzer was supplied to the Syrian government by the Russian military.
The photo shows the howitzer deployed is a desert area, most likely somewhere in the countryside of Palmyra or north of Suweida. The presence of these weapon systems is another argument contributing to a success of pro-government forces in the area.
In the province of Aleppo, the SAA Tiger Forces and their allies further outflanked the strategic ISIS-held town of Maskanah liberating the villages of Fariyah, Khirbat Ghudraf, Jubab Masudiyah, Shumriya, Batushiya, and Salemiyah.
Meanwhile, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) continued steadily isolating the city of Raqqah from the western direction.
Summing up the recent developments, the Syrian-Iranian-Russian alliance have taken the initiative in its hands and now is aiming to achieve own strategic goals in eastern Syria, while the US-led coalition attempts to make some gains along the Jordanian and Iraqi borders and prepares for a storm of Raqqah.
Good news. Thank you very much!
I’ll repeat for the “umpteenth” time. Allowing US backed (controlled, however you say it,they work for the US) to seize Raqqa goes a long way towards the dismemberment of Syria on a permanent basis. Its a symbolic victory in the war, just if not more important than Aleppo was. By “liberating” the ISIS “capital” that permits the US controlled forces to claim a “capital” city for a puppet government to be set-up. One that the entire West and their countless stooge nations Worldwide will “recognize” as the “legitimate” government of Syria.
Right now the West is somewhat constrained by the Assad government being recognized as the official government of Syria. But by having a large section of the country under its control, and a symbolic victory over ISIS. As well as a centrally located capital city. They can easily challenge the Assad government’s claim to legitimacy. And if the “rebels” are recognized as legitimate. That “legitimate” government can call in outside forces to help them. As well as order out “other” forces from their “Syria”. Those in Moscow thinking the US can be trusted on “anything”. And have “accepted” that regime change is dead, need to read up on “US aggression 101”.
It certainly looks to me like the US in Syria is making the “play”,that I begged Russia to make with Ukraine. Its as old and time tested a part of the history of warfare as almost any other. You back a “government in exile”,or set one up of your supporters. Once they gain territory the “old regime” begins to lose support. And other countries start to see them as losing. And begin to look at the “new people” as the coming power in the country. The West could thank their lucky stars that Russia is so split between defenders and appeasers that they didn’t do that in Ukraine. In Syria the US is counting on that same Russian split to pull their plan off this time. We’ll see if it works for them.

Very important development on going in Iraq. The Popular Mobilization Units of the Iraqi Kurds (which is aligned with Assad’s Syrian Army) have begun their advance toward the Syrian border at Hasaka and Der ez Zor Provinces.
This is serious development that will forestall the foundation of the US plan to control the Syrian border.
thanks Anon – great to hear this from you.
@ uncle bob
I imagine the Russians are aware of this. The US idea in both Syria and Ukraine was, among other interests, to pull Russia into another Afghan war as part of a fresh attempt to isolate and crush Russia as per the 1980’s. Russia and China are well aware of this.
We are watching a whole new method of responding to this old US trick. Rather than seek total victory and full deployment, Russia are in fact reversing the roles, and the US and its allies are being dragged into umpteen wars and sapped of strength and credibility. They are also pushing back with brilliantly played contracts in Venezuela and shaking out the snakes in Brazil. They are playing a long game.
In short, it isn’t the Russians intention, in either Ukraine or Syria, to have a clean quick victory. They are giving the Afghan War treatment to the US empire, on multiple fronts. I think it is brilliant. Slower, but they are definitely killing off the US.
Russia’s arms procurement program to take Syrian experience into account — deputy minister
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has earlier said that the new armament procurement program for 2018-2025 would cost the budget 30 trillion rubles.
TASS: Experience obtained during the Russian military operation in Syria was taken into account while drafting the state arms procurement program until 2025, Russia’s Deputy Defene Minister Yuri Borisov said Wednesday.
“We are now at the final stage of drafting the state arms procurement program until 2025.
“Undoubtedly, while preparing it, military command structures fully studied the experience of combat use of all types of weaponry and equipment.
“This experience served as a basis for amendments to the planned measures intended to carry out new research and development projects to create weaponry and to modernize the current list of weaponry, military and special equipment,” the deputy minister said.

The Russians, active in Syria, are having the very opposite of a “Vietnam”.
…… You can sit and read the lines of a play all day long, but only only on stage do you know how to act.
I like this headline: Russian Airstrikes Kill 120 Daesh Terrorists Fleeing From Raqqa
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201705271054035636-russian-airstrikes-kill-120-daesh-terrorists/
Its full time for Russia to take the proverbial gloves off and “get medieval” on these scumbags and their backers…
I hope this is the beginning of many more such action…
Russia, Syria, Hezbollah won’t go medieval. To regress to a state of mental dumbness and emotional numbness is the sole privilege of the nihilists, who due to their indoctrinated cognitive dissonance aren’t able to recognize that what they do to others, they are in fact doing to themselves.
You, Mad as Hell, have reincarnated on this planet a million times before. Your current or future girlfriend has been in previous lifetimes your school mate, your daughter, your sister, your mother.
This is what the nihilists reject to see and avoid to understand. Instead they dream up voodoo dolls who in turn tell them that they are the chosen people…
If kids play such games, we smile. If adults are up to the same nonsense, it’s not funny anymore, and if we allow such people to rule us, chances are, that we are living in the year 2017.
