MOSCOW (Sputnik) Turkish forces shelled Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) positions in northern Syria as a retaliatory measure within rules of engagement, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Saturday.
“The retaliation against forces posing a threat in and around Azez was made within the framework of the rules of engagement,” Davutoglu said as quoted by Turkey’s TRT Haber broadcaster.
YPG said earlier Turkish forces shelled the recently captured Minnigh airbase and village in Aleppo province.
“The YPG will immediately withdraw from Azez and the surrounding area and will not go close to it again,” Davutoglu added, stressing that Ankara would “retaliate against every step” made by the group.
Ankara claims that Syrian Kurds have links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a militant group fighting for Kurdish independence from Turkey.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – Turkey and Syrian Kurdish forces should move to deescalate tensions in northern Syria, US State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement Saturday.
“We are concerned about the situation north of Aleppo and are working to de-escalate tensions on all sides,” Kirby said.
He added that Washington urged Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and affiliated forces against taking advantage “of a confused situation by seizing new territory.”
“We have also seen reports of artillery fire from the Turkish side of the border and urged Turkey to cease such fires,” Kirby stressed.
The spokesman argued that Ankara and YPG “share a serious threat” from the Islamic State, encouraging them to focus on anti-Daesh efforts and “work towards a cessation of hostilities.”
I wondered why Turkey restarted the combat with the PKK half a year ago. It should be recalled that it was the Turkish government and military, that took up the fight. If I recall correctly, the PKK kept the ceasefire for another week or two before responding to the military attacks.
Initially, I thought Turkey committed atrocities against the Turkish Kurds using the migrant crisis and the Syrian conflict as cover. Western governments still refuse to look at these indiscriminate massacres, even though the Turkish policy of ethnic cleansing is quite obvious.
Meanwhile, I came to the conclusion that Turkey reignited its own Kurdish conflict as a pretext to crush down on the Syrian Kurds across the border. It seems that Turkey murders parts of its own Kurdish population to increase the internal pressure for “retaliation” against all Kurds.
Turkey did not reignite the PKK fight- The PKK called off the ceasefire even though there was an offer on the table for a resolution of issues between the two parties
After reading the post on that blog. I have the opinion it is a pro-Erdagon and Turkey blog. It seems to be saying that NATO is dumping Erdagon. And see’s that as a “bad thing”. After the criminal acts that the Turkish government has done in league with the empire for years now against Syria. And their latest crimes now against Russia as well as Syria. If NATO is dumping Turkey (which I doubt. They aren’t that intelligent.) That would be a “good thing”.Not something we should be complaining about.

NATO is betraying Turkey and I don’t say it’s ‘bad’ or “good” It just is what is happening- It’s the reality.

Hi Penny, know your site and you are focusing on another angle which maybe some are missing or don’t realise. They want to create a Kurdistan – carving out parts of Syria, Turkey and Iraq – and a greater Israel in the Middle East. Erdogan is doing exactly what they want. Reacting to the Kurds who aren’t innocent in any of this – but he has also supported Daesh and his own ambitions and greed will lead to his downfall and the destruction of Turkey. So that is why he has very little sympathy. He is a big problem for Turkey.
Yes, I’m addressing the creation of Israel’s beloved Kurdistan- Aka Greater Israel.
Are others missing it? Or are they obfuscating it? I don’t know.
Is Erdogan doing exactly as desired? No. No, he is not. And that’s the problem. Erdogan has zero desire to see Turkey balkanized. To be overthrown in a coup. To be killed like Gaddafi.
“So that is why he has very little sympathy”
I’m not concerned with sympathy only moves and counter moves
“He is a big problem for Turkey”
He’s a big problem for NATO. And NATO has long ago decided to rid themselves of Erdogan and Turkey as we know it today. Same as Iraq, Syria and eventually Iran
“he has also supported Daesh”
Has he? I know there has been many claims like that. But fighters and weapons leaving Turkey have more to do with the CIA then Erdogan
So the backstabbing pasha gangster did not know of the almost billion bucks he made of stolen Syrian and Iraqi oil? His 250 room mansion by the grace of the almighty was created in less than 7 days by the divine because he was a good little catholic boy..
For someone who does a lot of analysis and writes about it, that paragraph was a doozy.. On top of some of the other comments I am with uncle bob here.. I was wavering there but its a definite now.
And this reply is mostly for uncle bob.. To say more would be insulting as in don’t insult our intelligence..
Thanks for your reply. We will have to beg to differ on Erdogan – the man is a meglomaniac. He wants to recreate the Ottomn Empire. He is a disaster for Turkey – yes he knows what is going on but has handled it appallingly. Putin and Russia threw several lifelines to him and Turkey and how were they repaid? He is deeply involved with Daesh – that cannot be denied. His son does the illegal oil trade and daughter was looking after Daesh fighters in hospitals she ran.
I understand where you are coming from – he is another pawn. What I meant about him doing what they want is – his reaction is what they desired and he has reacted exactly as they predicted he would and fallen into their trap. That other chap Davutoglu is awful too. They are both very bad for Turkey.
Turkey is no doubt in the sights of the A/Z’s too. Erdogan is not the one or his side kick Dav to stop the Balkanisation of Turkey. They are the problem too.
I read that quite a bit. But I can’t get my head around how that’s possible. Turkey has been in NATO for a very, very, long time. Their military is fully enmeshed with NATO military. NATO occupied as I like to say. He (Erdogan) was never, ever going to recreate the Ottoman Empire unless NATO allowed that to happen. And NATO aka the US was never going to allow it- So for me that claim has never stood up as credible. Think about that for just a few minutes and you will understand the impossibility of that claim.
Thinking of the Cuban missile crisis, the US had put missiles in Turkey (Jupiter missiles) and pointed them at Russia- Does this sound at all like a nation that controls it’s own foreign policy?
Yes Turkey is NATO occupied but that doesn’t stop Erdogan from having Ottoman Empire aspirations.
He thought going into Syria, Libya and Iraq would mean he could take back land from those “great days” and the US played on this. They used this to get him on baord. Look at the palace he has built – why does he need a 1,000 room $615m price tag palace? – that alone shows something about his mentality. There are also pictures of him greeting Abbas in Ottoman Empire style with individuals on the stairs dressed up in local costumes from different countries under the Ottoman yoke or some he thinks should be now part of Turkey.
The West finds it easy to manipulate people with egos like Erdogan. Probably on the promise he will be rewarded. But he didn’t count on the Kurdistan creation…..now he realises its too late and he has reacted in a violent way.
Yeah, just as US ambassador April Glaspie told Saddam Hussein that “the Kuwait issue is not associated with America”. Saddam, as we know, was hanged under the auspices of the US occupying force. Erdogan should remember the legends about those who deal with the Devil.
“…….Lavrov made another important point which did not address a specific international issue but was universal in its character: the choice between sausage and honor. Remember these words, those of you gentlemen who criticize the contemporary Russian state, so that in the future you will not write nonsense and won’t be saying that you don’t understand Russia’s foreign policy principles:
“You could say that you want a piece of bread with sausage and jam with your tea because “who cares about Crimea and what’s happening to the Russians there or about the coup.” Or you choose a different path. I will never be in favor of entirely ignoring economic interests, the necessity to establish favorable conditions for our economic development and growth. A country like Russia cannot “spin like a weathervane” depending on what is desired by the world’s powers-that-be who believe they decide the fate of all countries and peoples on this planet.”
That’s why the “powers that be” want to destroy us. Just as they did during the tsarist and Soviet times. Even thought we are prepared for compromises among equals, we are not a weathervane and cannot be bought with sausage. Period.”

I had a really interesting thought the other day. Since Saudi oil is less important now then it has been for a really long time. This assumes that the 9/11 attack was really the act of al qaeda and financed by high level members of the Saudi royal family. That the US in a long game is setting them up for revenge for that attack. They are already engaged in a war with the Houthis and now it seems they may go into Syria. This could be a ploy to get them for waste more money and man power and then let them get overthrown by their own population. A lot of behind the scene things could be taking place. Already most of the world sees that the Saudis are bombing Yemeni civilians and hospitals. Could the US have given them those coordinates to turn world favor against them? Could the US being acting so foolish in recent time because that was the best way to set them up for a collapse?
The Saudis (from top to bottom) are patsies. As such, they can count on being betrayed by the Hegemon. Revenge, for serving the role of willing patsies on 911 and the last 70 years and financing the CIA’s proxy army of jihadists? Surely you jest!
There is no revenge or anger, just the usual satanic betrayal instincts and sodomization rituals and other sundry tricks at work.
It does appear that the skids are being greased for the Sauds. I agree with that.
The thing is we can see more or less what happens by the why eludes us. We can guess and we can think we know but we really don’t as we are not the ones in power or behind the scenes making what happens happen. Its a thought nothing more. Plus I also think/know that within the US gov there are people that are not part of a grand world wide diabolical scheme some of these types of people do hold high level positions. The ones that know the why are not numerous I would guess there is maybe a few hundred if that. Just enough to guide the ship where they want it to sail.
I can concur with much of your second post, Things are always richer in detail than any generalization could ever fully, accurately express, The only thing I am 100% confident of is that the Suadis were never the principal archtects of 911. Their role was secondary,
The Saud family may try to develop some independence from the imperial forces that placed them in rulership of most of the Arabian Peninsula, but I’ll wager they will fall before any such independence from the Empire has much of a chance of going very far at all. The Saudi rulers have tragedy written all over them, not great promise for the future, even as an evil force. The Saudi people deserve liberation from their yolk.
Some in the US may want revenge on Saudi Arabia. There should be exposure, release of the classified 28 pages. etc. But the command headquarters of 911 was not Riyahd, so the hunt for justice must go through there , but should not stop there, That’s all.
“SHAMAL STORM ’16 will see the deployment of over 1700 British Army personnel, from across a wide variety of units from Force Troops Command and 3 [UK] Division, in a large scale Combined Arms battlegroup exercise. March and April! It took a little digging to find a rough date for the exercise, because it’s conspicuously missing from all the mainstream articles on the subject. The timeframe fits with the Turkish/Saudi war preparations.
