Yesterday some very serious riots took place in Kiev. The Yanukovich government has passed a new law which attempts to restrict the kind of rioting the Ukraine has seen in the past months, and the response of the rioters was a full scale assault on the riot police. What I find the most appalling is that the government is ordering the riot cops to just stand there and hold their position, but not to fight back. That, of course, only serves to heighten the already strong sense of impunity of the rioters who now attack the cops with Molotov cocktails, large rocks, metal bars, teargas, knives and fire extinguishers. Numerous cops were hospitalized yesterday after begin attacked by the rioters. Still, the cops are under strict orders not to fight back while the US is demanding that the riot police be removed from the streets. And in the meantime, what does the Yanukovich government say? They are offering to negotiate with the opposition.
With every passing day, Yanukovich reminds me more and more of Alexander Kerensky, and I am afraid that, just like Kerensky, Yanukovich will end up running for his life while thugs and terrorists seize power.
To get a feel for what took place on Sunday, please check out this Russian TV report (in Russian, but the images speak for themselves):
In the meantime, the website Vilayat Dagestan, which is linked to the so-called Ansar al-Sunna terrorist organization has published a video featuring footage of the two men who committed the recent suicide attacks in Volgograd. Entitled “Appeal of Suleiman and Abdurakhman before the martyrdom operation in Volgograd” the video shows how they built their bombs and it includes a threat directly made to Vladimir Putin who is told that Ansar al-Sunna is preparing a “surprise” for him and for the Olympic tourists to avenge the blood of Muslims which is shed worldwide. The video is 45min long and in Russian, but if you want to check it out for yourself, here it is:
Now, the two guys on the video are dead, as are many, possibly most or even all, of their accomplices which were located and killed by Russian special forces. Still, the threat, I think, is real and should be taken very seriously.
There is more than just threats made by all sorts of Wahabi crazies. There seems to be a concerted propaganda campaign by the Western corporate media to convince the general public that these Olympic games have some kind of special meaning for Putin who, as the BBC put it recently, “has staked his reputation on this event”. I have no idea where they got this notion, but it is most definitely not based on anything factual, if only because “staking his reputation” on a sports event is not at all the kind of stuff Putin would do. Yet the Western propaganda machine is in full swing telling us that these upcoming games are somehow a crucial test for Putin. This tells me that the western special services are, again, up to no good and that for all the US promises to work with the Russians for the security of this event, the reality is that somebody somewhere is preparing a big attack on these games.
The Russian author and dramatist Anton Chekhov used to say that if you put a gun on stage in the first act of a play, it should be fired in the second act. Well, the gun is clearly hanging on the wall and the first act is about to begin. Whether it will be fired in the second act is now in God’s hands.

I don’t think it is as bleak as it may appear. Russia will not let the US/EU steal the Ukraine. They are just too smart, know the MO of the West and have the determination to win (ie. I am going on faith in Russia which is well placed IMHO).
The scenes from Ukraine are very disturbing as is the attitude of the EU and the US in defending and, indeed egging on the street thuggery. Particularly startling was today’s threat from a member of the opposition that the Parliament should be dissolved and new elections, including presidential elections, be held as soon as possible lest the current President goes the way of Gaddaffi. I must have misunderstood democracy all the years – I certainly didn’t think it included assassination threats. Yanukovich does seem to have a plateau-shaped learning curve since it should be clear by now that no concessions short of him and his government stepping down will satisfy the opposition.
Like you, I’m very much afraid that western intelligence agencies are providing help and support to Wahabi groups planning an atrocity. I’m sure Russian intelligence and security services are well aware of what a Trojan Horse western ‘help’ with security might prove to be and are on the case.
Here in the UK, the amount of anti-Russian propaganda generated by Sochi is unbelievable and it’s increasing day by day. It’s just a relentless drumbeat.
As for the Olympics, the more the reason not to promote such events. If you want to send your athletes to participate, fair enough. But to host the events, be it, summer oly or winter oly, world cup, or F1, it seems waste of great deal of resources just to give the westerners the excuse to boycut or use various propaganda against the hosting country. Let the sob’s in the west be the host all the time. you can still participate, watch, etc.. just no need for all the crap that goes along. see all the noise for Brazil and the world cup..
It is been written that Putin knows that recent terrorist attacks were ordered by Saudi Arabia and he wants to retaliate attacking that country, what do you know about it?
@Chema Martinez: what do you know about it?
I have seen the reports. I think that this is propaganda which was originally created by the FARS agency. I don’t believe that this is true, nor do I believe that Russia would chose a military attack as an retaliatory option. I think that this is just all nonsense.
Kind regards,

You know Saker if you had the time you should become a modern historian. In the future when people look back on all of the fast-paced, tumultuous events of the early 21st century it will be nice to read it from a neutral birds-eye perspective, rather than by history’s “winner” if you know what I mean. You would have one book purchase right here at least!
Just a thought.
@SG: you are very kind, thank you for your (wholly undeserved) words. I will say that the entire Internet, assuming remains online and uncensored – which is by no means sure, will be a fantastic archive for historians to research. For all its faults, the Internet and the modern age makes it possible for almost anybody to sit down, report events, interpret them, share his opinions, etc. and that is immensely liberating. For the first time ever, it may become possible for those who LOST to write their own history, and not just for the winners. We do live in very interesting times indeed.
Many thanks again, and kind regards,
The Saker
Hello Saker,
What do you think about this article by Mahdi Darius on Global REsearch: http://www.globalresearch.ca/volgograd-and-the-conquest-of-eurasia-will-the-house-of-saud-see-its-stalingrad/5363440
Particularly this part:
“If one scratches deep enough, they will find that the same ilk that attacked the Iranian Embassy in Beirut also attacked the Russian Embassy in Damascus. Both terrorist attacks were gifts to Iran and Russia, which served as reprisals for the Iranian and Russian roles in protecting Syria from regime change and a destructive war. It should, however, be discerned if the House of Saud is genuinely lashing out at Iran and Russia or if it being manipulated to further the goals of Washington in the US negotiations with Tehran, Moscow, and Damascus.”
Perhaps the House of Saud is being manipulated by the US to catalyze anti-war sentiment in Iran and Russia without directly offending Saudi?

I am somehow surprise of your doubts and fear about possible terrorist attacks during the Olympics. I truly believe that the Russian authorities already have contingency plans for any attack. What is obvious is the coordination the western media has in inflicting fears, doubts, and subtle and open attacks to Russia in general and Putin in particular. Russians already know this. I understand you are from the former Soviet Union. I am not an expert on Russia but I have been there quite a few times, and I’ve talked and seen how people react to tragedy and challenge. Last August I was at the Volgograd train station with my baby daughter buying souvenirs, and I rode the trolleys and buses. I think a lot about it. Many people certainly have fears but they are not afraid to defend their land. Maybe I am bias because my wife is from Volgograd. Whatever happens in Sochi, people in Russia are more and more convinced that the west is after their land and resources. Putin is trying to do as much as possible to eradicate corruption and provide a peaceful environment for the people and a bright future.
About Ukraine, yes I agree that their current president is corrupt as much as many of the current politicians. However, the approach taken at this time is political prudence and police investigation. What you see happening in Ukraine is simply a provocation to push the authorities into violence, which will give the western press and politician just what they are waiting for. The Ukrainian president is gaining time by doing negotiations. Today they arrested some members of the radical groups. It seems that the live stream bloggers got instructions to stream from far away and not on the ground as they did yesterday, and where they showed the faces of many of the violent or radical thugs. The western media has developed an excellent coordination in Ukraine with the opposition.
I agree with Puskin’s comment – … What you see happening in Ukraine is simply a provocation to push the authorities into violence, which will give the western press and politician just what they are waiting for….
Who in right mind would attack a group of riot police at the park entrance http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/webarkadiy/52154141/7958/7958_900.jpg
It looks like last year’s Egypt, or present-day Tunisia or Turkey.
Saker,
I fully agree with you that ‘There seems to be a concerted propaganda campaign by the Western corporate media to convince the general public that these Olympic games have some kind of special meaning for Putin who, as the BBC put it recently, “has staked his reputation on this event”‘.
I noticed the phrase some time ago in ALL the articles relating to Sochi, repeated at nauseam. Clearly it shows that something big MUST happen which will damage the reputation of the archvillain new Stalin. The “expulsion” of David Satter is part of the same big operation, he obviously was on a mission of provocation.
Add the sudden “concerns” of the House Intelligence Committee that Russia is not sharing information with US intelligence “to protect our athletes in the Games”, in other words blaming Russia in advance for “inadequate” measures (Beslan and the Theater are remembered and talked of only as “failures” of the Security forces). I am very much afraid that they prepare something like Beslan, involving killing of hostages to be blamed on the Russians.
The riots in Kiev are definitely coordinated with the Games. Georgia redux?

A big question is if Russia can or should try to go on the offensive at some point. All of these attacks on Russia, and yet Russia hasn’t done much to fight back. What do you see as Russia’s options to make the West want to quit? You would think some of the puppets would look at Georgia and come to the conclusion that attacking Russia is not a no-risk proposition.

Regarding Depardieu’s defection to Russia. As a Russophile I can see how Russia gains by it. As a Socialist and a Francophile indandescent with rage does not begin to express how I feel. If he’s from a Communist family he should know better. Damn you Depardieu. You’ve betrayed France. You’ve sold your birthright for a mess of pottage.
The Committee of Public Safety will not tolerate any further subversion of France by the Axis of Evil between the English Tories and the Russian Day Watch.
