Pretty much all my sources confirm that the junta in Kiev has launched an attack on the city of Slaviansk. Most sources say that only SBU and Right Sector forces are involved, though other source report that the “special forces” (no details) seen on the airport near Slaviansk are also participating. My personal take is that at most the military is providing some support, but that the real fighting is now purely SBU + RS. From the junta’s perspective, this is a very wise decision because, unlike the paratroopers or regular military forces, the SBU/RS troops will be more than happy to kill, kidnap, torture or maim what they see as local “separatists” and “Moskal-supporters”. Furthermore, also unlike the paratroopers or regular military units, the SBU/RS thugs can expect no mercy at all from the locals, so they will not surrender or, even less so, switch sides.
So now the only question is how determined the Russian-speakers in the eastern Ukraine really are. In 08.08.08 the local people of Tskhinval succeeded in bogging down a *FAR* superior attacker, backed by *massive* and *sustained* artillery and tank fire (something which has not occurred yet in Slaviansk), but they did that because they had no doubt whatsoever what a takeover of South Ossetia by Saakashvili’s truly genocidal thugs meant for them. I am not at all sure that most people in the eastern Ukraine share that kind of determination.
The good news – at least so far – is that today’s attack was rather lame and has nothing to show, really. All the fighting happened only on the outskirts of Slaviansk, only 2 local militia men are reported dead, a few attempts at entering the city in mini-vans appeared to have been intercepted and at the end of the day the attacking force had to retreat. For a force reportedly composed of 5’000 attackers backed by armor and heavy machine guns that is rather pathetic.
The bad news is that Slaviansk appears to be surrounded on all sides except for the main road between Slaviansk and Donetsk.
The bottom line is this: the western press wants to show that the junta has some muscle while the Russian press wants to show that the junta is committing a crime against the civilian population. Thus both sides have vested interest in inflating the situation.
Personally I see no evidence at all of an 08.08.08 kind of attack.
I would also note that Putin’s reaction today was very measured. He did threaten “consequences”, but if you listen carefully, he threated the “officials involved” and said that this would also affect the “relationship” between the two countries. What is important is that he did not refer to Ossetia, he did not mention his right to intervene, he did not speak of protecting the Russian population outside Russia as Lavrov did yesterday. I am in no way suggesting that Putin is hesitant, or that he will not deliver on his promise to protect the Russian speakers in the eastern Ukraine, I am only trying to point out that on the “threat scale” he has so far decided to wait and see. In fact, he quite literally said exactly that. So yes, he did threaten “consequences” but so far this threat is really directed at the decision-makers in the junta, not at the 5000 or so attackers on the ground (who will be the real target of a Russian intervention, should it happen).
This one is too early too call. We must wait and not get infected by the constant hyperbole of the corporate media.
Stay tuned, I will try to keep you posted.
The Saker
Thank you saker, actually I was reading a “report” on today’s activities on a prominent Western news site when I realized that I didn’t trust a thing I was reading! I decided to check your blog for an account that I did trust. Amazing that all of the resources of the “news organizations” of the West have produced only cynicism and scorn, and you, a lonely blogger, is believed. The empire is truly crumbling when the root of its power, the ability to shape reality, is waning. James Baldwin once said, “…the issue is who shall define what is reality.”
Looks like you’re right.

As a member of the feline community, it seems to me that sending paramilitaries to do what should be police work may not result in surrenders or switching sides, but it is also a bang-up way to turn *all* of the local population against you.
That said, I don’t think that defending fixed points is a particularly wise tactic for an insurgent force. Better to do everything possible to get armor bogged down, and infantry separated from their heavy support.
Russia will do drills at the Ukrainian border today. Simply a stronger warning?

Why has the little town of Slavyansk been the focus of this conflict for weeks now? I think I saw a rumor somewhere that some Greystone guys were taken as prisoners there early on. Is the junta trying to free them? Did that rumor have any basis in reality?
Or maybe the junta is attacking Slavyansk because there are more little green men there than anywhere else in the Ukraine? Of so, why would they be concentrated in Slavyansk? Could Putin have sent them there because he wanted the action to revolve around a town with a significant name? US puppets are attacking Slavic Town (which is what Slavyansk basically means) – that resonates.
Or maybe Slavyansk has a purely geographic strategic importance that I’m missing?
Russia wants war!!!
Look how they placed their country close to the U.S. bases:

I found this in a cbc post by reporter Nahlah Ayed:
Yulia Lasazan, a spokeswoman for Mariupol’s police department, told The Associated Press about 30 masked men armed with baseball bats stormed the building in the dark early Thursday and started beating the protesters. Five people were taken to a hospital, she said.
It was not clear why the protesters, some of whom were believed to be armed, did not offer resistance but called local police instead. Lasazan said the police were controlling Mariupol city hall’s perimeter and were negotiating with the remaining protesters to leave.

Though I am extremely pleased to read your opinions about the situation (much as I might disagree fairly strongly with some of those opinions, others agree very strongly), I am completely dependent on you for anything resembling objective truth about the situation. Your sitrep’s are absolutely invaluable, and I wonder how many of your readership go to you almost exclusively for them.
I suppose the corollary to my thanks to you for your sitrep’s is my astonishment at the degree to which the mainstream media in the United States and the UK are entirely and completely co-opted by… I know this sounds like tinfoil hat time… the CIA. Example. Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times is very clearly a CIA agent. Impossible for me to prove and impossible for him to deny, but when someone equates Russians with animals and encourages his fellow American citizens to arm “brave” Ukrainians so they can hunt Russians down and kill them, one must suppose he is either mentally defective or in the pay of the CIA… or both.
there is also Special Forces (SPETZNAZ) of GUR – Golovne Upravlinnja Rozvidky- i.e. Ukr. military intelligence – Those who “correctly” answered questions while enrolled, whether they awould be ready to engage in warfare with Russian Army…
“Why has the little town of Slavyansk been the focus of this conflict for weeks now?”
Because Slavyansk is just the right size for a show of arms. The reliable Ukrainian “government” forces number only 10-15,000. Taking over and securing a city the size of, say, Donetsk or Lugansk is simply beyond them. And take something they must, or the “government” will lose all credibility it has left with its’ sponsors and the Ukrainian population.
As for the militia, the same is pretty much true. They cannot – and, in fact, still do not – fully control either Donetsk or Lugansk. Slavyansk is the place where they can make their presence seen and felt. I suspect they also believe that Slavyansk will become a rallying point once the “government” forces attack, provided they can hold it long enough. They seem to believe that they can. Time will tell.
BOPOH.
A good point would be to declare a no fly zone, and no heavy weapons.
I’m posting this link in case someone hasn’t already done so, because Mike Whitney hits Putin’s dilemma on the nail and also has the Zio-media’ s complicity in spinning the propaganda against Putin and Russia pegged.
http://www.counterpunch.org/2014/04/23/putins-dilemma/
While Whitney doesn’t suggest a way out of this trap he clearly states the massive threat to Russia which I will add to below. I’m not sure how much operational, tactical experience Putin acquired while in the KGB, but if anything will help him maneuver his way through this minefield of damned if you do; damned if you don’t entrapment set by the Anglo/Zio empire it would be just such intelligence operational experience. It’s going to take a well-coordinated, deeply embedded intelligence operation, networking with ethnic Russian resistance on the ground to defeat the Anglo/Zio agenda delicately sidestepping their traps.
Some of you know I was sidelined i.e. viciously marginalized in a feeble attempt to ruin my credibility, and then banned at MoA, i.e. really the most effective term would be muzzled, because the threat of my truth is a clear and present danger to the Zionist agenda that conveniently and deceptively straddles the imperial issue on both sides of the public domain to manipulate the discussion to the half-truth end. Those who steer towards the full truth by exposing and attacking the full picture represents the biggest threat to the Anglo/Zionist agenda and no one should pretend to be working to defeat the Anglo/Zionist plan when they literally sabotage all discussion on Zionist involvement in that plan.
The neocons who are 95% Zionists launched this Anglo/Zio empire offensive and were the original architects of the imperial agenda. Wolfowitz’s Doctrine mirrors Zbigniew Brzezinski’s Grand Chessboard and vice-versa and they speak with the same forked tongue.
I have read some at MoA discrediting Saker because of his Anglo/Zio description of the Empire. This is because they work with half-truth and Saker works with the full truth, at least from my initial impression as I have only been visiting this site for over a month. Make no mistake about it, the intent of Zionists is to sack and exploit to their advantage Russia’s wealth of resources as they attempted to do in the past. This is a big part of the imperial agenda. As I stated over at MoA, Zionists intend to solidify their power by piggybacking on this U.S./Nato offensive that Neocons i.e. Zionists dreamed up decades ago. And I’ll be damned if I’m going to allow b or anyone else fudge this truth or underestimate the role of Zionism in this empire offensive!
Russia is strategic territory to subjugate in the march to conquer Eurasia. China beware. The plan is to bring Russia to its knees, undermine BRICS in the process, neutralize and bleed Russia dry and monopolize the Eurasian economy. I agree with Whitney who writes: “The US intends to spread its military bases across Central Asia, seize vital resources and pipeline corridors, and encircle China in order to control its future growth.”
Eastern Ukraine needs to raise a self-defense army. All it needs is rockets and some AA guns and it can handle the Ukrainians, barring NATO intervention.
The Eastern Ukrainian leadership should cite
– new unjust taxation (which is in fact happening and is the reason 80% of miners in the East are on strike),
– new taxation by an illegitimate and unelected government (also true); and finally
– the authoritarian and arbitrary appointment of local governors by the far away central authority in Kiev (also true)
And, viola, you have the exact same just causes for rebellion that the Americans gave against Britain. They can further add the crime of executions and military attacks against citizens and civilians without trial and a whole litany of other crimes perpetrated by the neo-Nazi supporters in Kiev.
Call it St. George’s Army for dramatic effect. Then watch the Washington spin-masters lose their heads as they try to conceal the obvious parallels and prevent American sympathy. Also assemble a Congress to raise funds for the army and plan policy and undertake negotiations with central authority in Kiev, as well as all other concerned parties and potential allies.
Make demands plain and simple :
– increased autonomy,
– direct election of own governors,
– Constitutional guarantees that military forces will not be used to attack citizens
– At least Eastern and Southern Ukraine will be policed exclusively by its own people and departments, with assurances that no central police force will attempt to intervene in those regions except with the explicit agreement of the local/regional government
Perhaps also demand a Senate to counterbalance the parliament and ensure regional representation in national government.
That’s what I would do, anyways. Regardless, Eastern and Southern Ukraine absolutely needs a coordinated defense otherwise they will be picked off one by one, little by little.
Kalithea, I’m even naughtier than you. I was banned at MoA straight away, for mentioning that Shlomo Sand and Arthur Koestler (and many others) had both proved the Khazar conversion to Judaism (a simple fact of history)and also alluding to the savagery of the Judeo-Roman Wars and the incomplete nature of the Roman expulsions etc. The neo-liberal economic and neo-conservative strands of US and Western policy are both dominated by Rightwing Jews, and to state otherwise is simply obtuse. And to act to suppress those truths is invidious and self-defeating. Zionist suppression of any criticism of their actions only feeds an ever greater hatred for them, but that, of course, is welcomed by those who set themselves apart from and against the rest of humanity 3500 years ago.
