It appears that the ceasefire has had a bigger impact on the big cities of Lugansk and Donetsk than in the smaller cities on the frontline like Slaviansk or Kramatorsk were combat operations have apparently continued. Furthermore, as Juan has reported, Ukrainian troops are further being resupplied and reinforced. The junta’s Minister of Defense has officially confirmed that the notorious “Battalion Aidar” death-squad, which had been wiped out by the NDF, was being re-formed and re-trained with new soldiers. Igor Kolomoiski appears to be the person financing this effort.
There are now officially half a million refugees from the ex-Ukraine now in the Rostov-on-the-Don region alone. 400 (not 400’000! sorry – The Saker) refugee centers have now been created in Russia east of the Ural Mountains. The US ambassador to the UNSC has denied that there is a refugee crisis. To Uncle Sam half a million refugees are, apparently, invisible, just like the 275’000 Serbian refugees from Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo are *still* invisible to the West.
The Saker
I think it is apparent that the Russian military is prepared for a full scale takeover of Ukraine (all of the south, plus Kiev in order to shut down the government). I think that this occupation will only be temporary like Georgia was. Putin has supposedly said that Ukraine now belongs to the US and the EU, and they will have to support it.
Remember, the original Duma vote to use force in Ukraine was actually intended to be in Crimea. I think Putin desires that a new directive to use force will be issued when necessary, which will clearly delineate the new goals for complete destruction of the current regime in Ukraine.
History would suggest “training” a death squad takes more than 10 minutes.
The longer the taking, the longer the vulnerability as a general rule.
> 400’000 refugee centers have now been created in Russia east of the Ural Mountains.
Really? WTF? Cohabitation with Poroshenko or Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs came to terms?
Easy way to populate Siberia?
It stinks.
Saker you said that Putin was going to intervene, that it was imminent. Man-up and admit you were wrong.
If Putin does intervene at some later date, it’ll be at a time and place of his and his general’s choosing. It will be based on his interests and the long term interests of enhancing or protecting the powerbase of Russia (and by entension his powerbase). It will not be based on the emotion of the moment, nor based on the provocations of individual war crimes.
I really hope that for the sake of the innocent civilians of the Donbass region that the covert supply of materials scales up 10 fold, but I’m not hopeful it will increase to that amount.
BTW: It is in the interests of the EU and certain slimebags in Kiev that this conflict simmer at a controlled boil, why? –> because it’s in their interests that Eastern Ukrainians exterminate as many of the Right Sector and similar ilk to controllable numbers. These misfits and criminals will pose a massive provlem for the EU far worse than any Jihadist, because physically they can blend in and mentally they are as deranged and vicious as a Wahabi.

I agree. But Putine have to listen to the russian people, and they won’t accept mass murder on primetime…
I think that Russian army will invade the east ukraine but not the central and west parts. They will crush the UK Nat air forces.
Putine doesn t want to remove the UK Nat form Kiev, he wants them to embarass Europe and USA.
Occident created a monster, it’s their mess, and they have to clean it. The more the Kiev gouvernement causes problem to his “allies”, the more Poutine looks like the “good guy”…
I suspect that what was intended was accommodation for 400000 not 400000 centres

There is a significant typo in this. “400,000” refuge centers can’t be right. 400?
Saker thank you very much to mention Serbian refuges from Croatia, Bosnia&Hercegovina and Serbia province of Kosmet&Metohija.

GDP Disaster: Final Q1 GDP Crashes To -2.9%, Lowest Since 2009, Far Below The Worst Expectations
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-06-25/gdp-disaster-final-q1-gdp-crashes-29-worst-2009-far-below-worst-expectations
“Remember when in January 2014, Q1 GDP was expected to rise 2.6%? Well, here comes the final Q1 GDP revision and it’s a doozy: at -2.9%, far below the -1.8% expected and well below the -1.0% second revision, it is an absolute disaster, and is the worst print since Q1 2009.
And while a bad GDP print was largely expected, the driver wasn’t: personal consumption expenditures somehow crashed from 3.1% to just 1.0%, far below the 2.4% expected, meaning that all hope of a consumer recovery is dead. Finally, as a reminder, US GDP has never fallen more than 1.5% except during or just before an NBER-defined recession since quarterly GDP records began in 1947. Good luck department of truth propaganda machine, because even assuming 3% growth every other quarter in 2014 means 2014 GDP will be 1.5% at best!…”

“The leaders of Russia, France, Germany and Ukraine in a conference call on Wednesday urge extending a current ceasefire between government forces and militias in eastern Ukraine that expires on Thursday, the Kremlin said. The presidents of Russia, France and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin, Francois Hollande and Petr Poroshenko, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel had “detailed exchanges of opinions on the crisis situation in Ukraine,” the Russian president’s office said.

I strongly believe that an effective solution requires Russian and European cooperation. Neither party can do it alone – or wants to and Russia’s moves are intended to help European leaders to ‘man up’ and tell the US to take a hike. Notice that the US reaction to yesterday’s events was to say “nothing has changed” and “the US and our European allies remain strongly committed to sanctions etc to force Russia… or some such. They are afraid of a split.
To those who say Putin’s request to rescind the military authorization was a sellout – look at the reaction. The US says “nothing has changed” – this move was to help give European leaders cover and assure THEM (not the US) that Russia remains committed to a joint solution – the only practical position anyway. Russia is standing firm that Kiev MUST disarm and cannot unilaterally call for the separatists to lay down arms, that Kiev MUST negotiate directly with the separatists and address their concerns. The border is not closed and should there be some terrible slaughter start to take place Russian troops are at hand to prevent it. That is what I see anyway.

“Introduced June 24, online photo Gauleiter of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, accompanied by guards, clearly not of Ukrainian origin and clearly not in the Ukrainian outfit, could become a sensation. However, after the confirmation of the numerous facts of an appeal launched by the junta for help foreign mercenaries this could not be surprising. And yet we are talking about the so-called “first person” crumbling not on days, and on hours of a state, moreover, to establish exactly who guards this “person” is not too complicated puzzle.
In networks engaged in the investigation to determine who chose his guards, so to speak publicly elected President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, which, obviously, does not trust protection of their bulk and “chocolate” body Ukrainian patriots.
In this picture Poroshenko surrounded by bodyguards armed with Belgian machines P90, on the heads – branded caps, legs – fashion boots Lowa, and all this brave brothers is in the company Aegis Defence Services.
Poroshenko protect employees of private military companies (PMC), about which it is known that its headquarters are located in great Britain, in London (anyway, this is indicated by the contacts listed on the official website of the company). Aegis Defence Services provides security services at the international level, is known about the cooperation with the UN mission and the U.S. government, however, and individuals friendly Brits are ready to offer their services.
Geographically the company’s interests is very wide: Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Kenya, Nepal, and now, as it turned out, and Ukraine. Aegis do a quick response and, curiously, the assessment of risks and protect oil interests. The company employs about five thousand people.
Established in 2002, the company Aegis Defence Services has managed to avoid media attention, which is so not like PMC, but in 2005 the British TV station Channel 4 showed the movie in which the employees of this company were shooting at Iraqi civilians, to be more exact, in the car with Iraqi citizens are going to pass cars with employees of Aegis. Representatives of the British PMC his guilt is not admitted, however, to withdraw from Iraqi conflict white and fluffy failed, as did the other PMC – American company Blackwater.
The USA refused from services Aegis Defence Services.

Kiev junta and still continues to deny the presence in the punitive operations of foreign mercenaries. However, militia Donetsk and Lugansk national republics constantly informed about the radio intercepts, where heard foreign language. Previously CI “Anna-news” published a photo of the Polish mercenary reports, not even the General, and the acting President of Ukraine, Alexander Turchinov, in fact – the commander in chief. Citizen of Poland name is Jerzy Dziewulski, before he headed the protection of the Polish ex-President Aleksander Kwasniewski…
However, now that Poroshenko is considered by the President of Ukraine acknowledged their Western masters, the fact of attraction of foreign mercenaries says one thing: Gauleiter of Ukraine afraid. Afraid of their own soldiers, their own security and their own people, the very thing which allegedly took it as a guarantor shaky Ukrainian Constitution…”

It’s more like what you expect from the predictions of the Propaganda Model, as developed by Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman.
One distinction is that between “worthy victims” and “unworthy victims”:
If the victims happened to be allied with the West and the incident was caused by one of the West’s adversaries, then mainstream media will invariably publish detailed and dramatic accounts, accompanied with op-eds screaming for retribution, prosecution and intervention. The benefit is to exploit the news for “manufacturing consent” (catchphrase by Walter Lippman) and unite the public behind the state’s agenda.
If the victims, however, are those of one of the West’s adversaries, even when the incident was caused by an ally of the West, then scarcely anything will be reported. Typically a brief mention of a “friendly fire” or “collateral damage”. Here the purpose is not to cause any identification or empathy with the “enemy”, in order to keep the public in line with the state’s official agenda.
Case in point:
If the Donbass resistance downs a heli or plane, it’s a war crime that has to be severely punished.
If, however, the Nazi death squads round up and execute thousands of ethnic Russians, deliberately use cluster bombs, white phosphorus and mines in civilian areas and forcefully displace hundreds of thousands of Russians who flee from their terror, then it’s not a war crime, but “restoring law and order” and a “restrained and measured response” to terrorism.

Saker, there are 275,000 Serb refugees presently in Serbia (counting the 210,000 from Kosovo as “internally displaced”) only because another 250,000 have been given citizenship and such.
The 2001 census registered 380,000 fewer Serbs in “Croatia” than the 1991 one. I’d say the estimate of 750,000 Serbs displaced by the wars is about right, or maybe even on the conservative side. Though that doesn’t change the fact that for the West, they don’t exist. You might even say they are considered… “subhuman.”
Sergei Glazyev, one of Putin’s advisors and not exactly known for mincing words on the rise of Fascism in Europe:
Current events in Ukraine are guided by the evil spirit of fascism and Nazism, though it seemed to have dissipated long ago, after World War II. Seventy years after the war, the genie has escaped from the bottle once again, posing a threat not merely in the form of the insignia and rhetoric of Hitler’s henchmen, but also through an obsessive Drang nach Osten policy. The bottle has been uncorked, this time, by the Americans. Just as 76 years ago at Munich, when the British and the French gave Hitler their blessing for his eastward march, so in Kiev today, Washington, London and Brussels are inciting Yarosh, Tyahnybok, and other Ukrainian Nazis to war with Russia. One is forced to ask, why do this in the 21st century? And why is Europe, now united in the European Union, taking part in kindling a new war, as if suffering from a total lapse of historical memory?

Vladimir Platov on US-labatories abroad doing research on biological weapons:
It should be noted that due to the active work of many American “scientific institutions” working on assignments and direct financing from the Pentagon, both in the United States and in many other countries where the Pentagon implants such “biological research centers”, there is a growing direct biological threat of infection. Of particular concern is the fact that the process of expanding biohazard laboratory facilities has gone out of the control of authorities. These “centers”, originally created to solve the task of countering bioterrorism, have themselves become a source of new threats not only within the United States. Because of the weak control, incidents of loss and theft of dangerous germs and viruses have become possible, as well as acts of bioterrorism using a variety of highly dangerous pathogens and attempts to obtain access to technologies by mentally unstable and criminal members of terrorist organizations.

Alexander Donetsky on the reporting of Western media about the civil war in the Ukraine:
Media accounts in Europe and the United States are replete with stories about Russian troops battling Ukraine in two of its regions. But not a single European, American, or Ukrainian journalist who has visited the region has been able to track down even a single Russian soldier. The constant accusations that Russia is supporting insurgents with arms shipments, including heavy equipment, have also never been confirmed. Even the official documents presented by Kiev allegedly showing that those military vehicles were being kept at Russian storage depots turned out to be fictitious. That paperwork was concocted by someone who lacked even the slightest understanding of the Russian norms for filling out such documents.
A few paragraphs below is this unsettling statement by Poroshenko:
And the president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko openly admitted in an interview with Time magazine that the current Ukrainian leadership, which came to power after a coup d’état with the assistance of neo-Nazi militants, views Russia as its prime enemy. He stated frankly that his dream was to punish Russia, but using foreign military might, not Ukrainian forces.

Saker, forgive me for going off topic here, but on Victory Day in a town in Ukraine in a video we saw a young woman with a toddler march up to the stage and grab the microphone from a speaker extolling Hitler’s march through Ukraine – I am so wondering what has happened to her and if it is at all possible to research that. Has she become a refugee? What is currently the situation in her town?
I apologize if this has already been discussed on another thread.
Saker ithe refugee crisis is not in the US media because the US and NATO do not view Russians living outside Russia as legitimate inhabitants of these territories. Therefore, when they leave somewhere like Donbass, they are not refugees, but returnees, like the Pied Noir.
Therefore, according to official US/NATO doctrine, Russians in the Baltics, Central Asia, and Ukraine properly should relocate “home” to Russia and cease being “colonists” on the lands of other peoples.
Anyone who thinks I am exagerrating should examine the anti-Russian policies of the NATO/EU Baltic states, which deny citizenship to AND LEAVE STATELESS anyone Russian, including Russians born in the Baltics, who will not renounce his own nationality, language, and culture and take up the identity, language and nationality of the Baltic micor-states. These bigoted nationalist policies are officially blessed by the US State Department and EU and NATO as an apropriate response to the mere presence of Russians ont he territory of these states.
For this reason a Jewish-Romanian like Yatseniuk can proclaim Donbass is “our land” stolen by Russian “subhumans”.

Why, indeed?
The Putin one also. It sure looks like Georgia’s reward for attempting to fight Russia is going to be smallpox, btw, from that lovely laboratory Lugar helped set up. But never fear, security in labs at all levels here is equally abysmal…
But I think Poroshenko’s days are, erm, limited. He’s right now exactly where he deserves — caught between Pravy Sektor/the Empire, and the reality of an already-failed state. He’s a dead man walking; he just doesn’t know it yet.
Or maybe he does…
If I were a betting woman, I’d suggest setting up a pool: six months max? I’d say that’s optimistic, actually.
Bakunin:
Without aritificial state created hatred towards Moskals and shame at speaking Russian or feeling brotherly feeling towards Russians, Ukraine would not exist. It would just be southwest Russia.
I keep saying the real border in Ukraine is not between Novorossiya and Sloboda Ukraine, which is an ideological border based in part of the level of rootedness of the people to the land (to the northwest, the near eternal inhabitants of western Ukraine since stone age times and to the southeast, the migrants who repopulated Novorossiya after 1780 and accepted Russian identity from the ethnic melding of Russians, Serbs, Greeks, Tatars, and Germans), but directly north-northeast from the top end of Moldova/Transdniestr on the east side of Vinnitsiya to the western edge of Zhitomir, which is the actual language border. This does leave Kiev Russian, which should surprise no one since 70% of the peopel speak Russian every day.
See this map regarding everyday language useage in Ukraine.

Red is where Ukrainian ethnogenesis has actually occurred – Galacia, Volyna, Vinnitsiya, Transcarpathia. Blue is Russian Ukraine. It would probably be for the best for everyone if the red parts went their own way and became whatever sort of state they might like to be, and the blue parts joined back to Mother Russia.

Nora, I think te entire article is worth reading. There is one passage, however, I find highly questionable:
But who has tallied up the indirect human casualties from the promotion of homosexuality and drugs […]
One may or may not like “promotion of homosexuality”. Celebrating one’s sexual orientation, as it is usually done in gay and lesbian parades, makes no sense to me. Since it represents normality as biological evidence suggests, it should be taken as such and not be a pretext for a “pseudo-liberation cult”. To me, this has the odour of “exceptionalism” and “sense of entitlement”. I don’t know of any “hetero parades” where people proudly present their sexual orientation as something special. It’s more like a banality that few find worth mentioning. So the same standards should apply in either cases if acceptance meant what the word’s definition suggests.
Anyway, I find the claim that there would be “indirect human casualties” from the promotion of homosexuality highly dubious. With a bit of a stretch, one may perhaps construct a case where cross-dressers (like bearded men in women’s clothes) risk being beaten up if they happen to pass the wrong quarter at night. In this case one may argue that propaganda gave them a false sense of security and acceptance that led to a unfortunate outcome. Nevertheless, I’d like to see hard evidence before accepting the claim. It also provides the West with a first class phrase for a propaganda campaign (“Homophobic Russians link homosexuality to human casualties – boycott them until they accept Western standards of freedom and democracy…”) and the remaining parts of his article that do have a point would be drowned in the resulting noise created.
The Putin one also. It sure looks like Georgia’s reward for attempting to fight Russia is going to be smallpox, btw, from that lovely laboratory Lugar helped set up.
Though Vladimir Vladimirovich is a gifted writer who – unlike many of his Western counterparts – can draft speeches himself, this article was written by a Vladimir Platov ;-).
Regarding the smallpox issue, as long as it will only affect the rabble, it should be of little concern to the Georgian elites, for they can be certain to enjoy life in US-exile should excrements ever hit the fan and the entire region blow off.
But I think Poroshenko’s days are, erm, limited. He’s right now exactly where he deserves — caught between Pravy Sektor/the Empire, and the reality of an already-failed state. He’s a dead man walking; he just doesn’t know it yet.
Well, if history is a guide, his presidency can go on until he is no longer considered a useful “US-asset”.
If I were a betting woman, I’d suggest setting up a pool: six months max? I’d say that’s optimistic, actually.
I’ve not yet made up my mind. Too many variables to consider.
B.
Bakunin,
(Btw, I’ve been meaning to ask, are you really an anarchist?)
I agree w/you re: the promotion of homosexuality. Given what they went through here for most of the 20th century, I see those parades — and the whole Gay Pride issue, really — as no different than St. Paddy’s Day or Columbus Day parades. But my own personal opinion is that Identity Politics, of *any* sort is something to be pretty much outgrown (or at least not taken very seriously) as soon as the group in question becomes fully assimilated. At that point, if not well before, it truly is counterproductive: imo NO person is simply summed up by one label. No one, ever. Transsexuals still do have an awful time of it, for real, though, and there are still a lot of closeted queers who pay young men for sex then, because of their own self-loathing, beat and/or kill them. But that’s a risk any prostitute or pick-up takes, unfortunately.
SORRY about the Platov — gee whiz! “Oops,” to quote Gov. Perry… ;~)
But I’m going to disagree w/you about the smallpox — money is no protection!!! Our elites aren’t real bright if they think their money will keep them safe from smallpox, etc., or antibiotic resistant *anything* (you do know most antibiotics are gonna be worthless REAL soon, right, bc all the bugs have evolved into resistance AND Big Pharma hasn’t got any new ones in the pipeline cuz, natch, they’re not profitable enough. Overuse on factory farmed swine, poultry and cattle is the cause, but we’ll all feel the effect — a true equalizer, as it were).
As for Poroshenko, he’s just got a real balancing act and I don’t see how anyone could succeed; we’ll simply try something new and he’ll be an inconvenience and… whatever. Don’t think he’ll be mourned by too many in any case. Don’t forget, our leaders also have the collective attention span of a gnat, and between flying those B-52’s over China’s waters (!), Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and this Godawful mess — none of which is proceeding according to “plan” — I don’t see a lot of thought going into what to do next. I think they’ll just punt, Poroshenko-less.
But, ahem, I’ve been wrong before!
