First, a “SITREP from the front lines” by “Juan”
- Donetsk Airport freight terminal is burned and partly destroyed. Kiev is believed to be in control of the airport at this time. Damage to the terminal building is unknown.
- The attempt to seize Donetsk Airport was reinforced by Vostok Brigade. Casualties were heavy in the brigade but numbers unknown.
- The Vostok Brigade wounded being transported to hospital in a truck were fired upon. The driver was killed, then an RPG round was fired at the truck. All the wounded in the truck were killed, either by the RPG or head shots after the assault. Confirmed by vid and photos of the dead, all that could be seen had head wounds. A second video not being published absolutely confirms that all the dead from the trucks carrying wounded had head wounds.
- Numerous bombardments last evening and this morning of civilian areas of Slavyansk, Donetsk, Mariupol and Lugansk City and suburbs, civilian casualties are heavy with more than 70 reported dead and wounded.
- Major movements of Kiev forces as of 05 local time this morning have not commenced. More information on this later.
- As of 11:30 local time scattered probing attacks are reported around Slavyansk.
- As of 10:05 local time the situation in Mariupol is unknown.
- No major attacks by the Nats today, just numerous small probes.
- Evacuation is being attempted in Slavyansk for civilians but it is not possible, the city is cut off and surrounded to an extent. Don’t know if this is true or if it is a charade to mask the evacuation of at least the children. Reality is Slavyansk has to large a population to evacuate, 120,000.
- Scattered artillery and mortar attacks continue in the vicinity of Slavyansk and the outskirts of Donetsk, almost all at random civilian residential areas. Some casualties but number is unknown.
- No information on the situation in either Lugansk Oblast or Mariupol in Donetsk Oblast.

The Saker comments:
This is clearly a major escalation of the war. For the first time for example Su-25 ground attack aircraft have been filmed using unguided rockets to attack the positions of what I will call from now on the Novorossia Armed Forces (NAF). I have also seen some very bad footage of what appears to be a MiG-29. The attack on the Donetsk airport involved a long column of transport and attack helicopters. NAF sources also claim that their checkpoints have been attacked by Ukie helicopters. All in all, this the first (comparatively) large scale military operation of this war, at least to my knowledge. Though there are some contradictions in the figures presented by various sources, there seems to be a general agreement that “many tens” of people were killed, possibly up to one hundred, including about 50% civilians.
I have just heard the interview of two representatives of the Novorossia resistance who claim that the number of men wanting to sign up for combat has risen sharply. Alas, there was not footage provided to support this claim and since I don’t know how trustworthy the information given by these officials is I can only mention here “as is” with the usual caveats.
(Pseudo) “Election” of Poroshenko as seen in Moscow
There seems to be a consensus in Moscow that Poroshenko is a political chameleon who can change his opinion as fast as this animal can change his color: first he was a member of Kuchma’s United Social Democratic Party, then he helped create the Party of Regions, then he joined Yushchenko’s Our Ukraine Party. He also was a member of the Azarov government under President Yanukovich whom he then betrayed by financing the Maidan movement and joining the Udar Party. So Poroshenko is the ultimate political prostitute and in Moscow this is definitely a cause for optimism because a prostitute is pragmatic and can be bought. Does that shock you? Consider the alternatives and you will rapidly come to the same conclusion as Moscow.
The bad news is that for the time being Poroshenko is clearly on the USA’s payroll and that both his rhetoric and his declared policies are pretty much indistinguishable from the one of Iatseniuk, Turchinov, Avakov & Co. As a result the Kremlin’s reaction to Poroshenko’s announcement that he wanted to travel to Moscow to meet Putin has been to declared that at this point in time no such visit was being considered.
Russia’s policy towards the Ukraine
The approach chosen by the Kremlin to deal with the Ukrainian mess is now becoming pretty clear.
- Declare that while Moscow has huge reservations about the so-called “elections” it will be willing to negotiate and work with whoever is in power in Kiev.
- Declare that cessation of combat operations in the Donbass as a pre-condition for any such negotiations.
- Agree to try to find a deal on gas sales provided the Ukies pay their outstanding bill.
- Basically take note but otherwise ignore any statements made by Poroshenko and judge him by his actions and not his words.
Translated from “Diplomatese” into plain English this means putting the financial and political squeeze on Poroshenko until he decides that his current attempts at rapidly solving the problems of the Donbass by force will fail.
This is a tough and unpalatable policy because it implies that Russia will stand by and watch the neo-Nazi forces killing combatants and civilians across the Donbass. In this context it is very important to keep in mind another no less disturbing fact: the current level of resistance in the Donbass is still far below what it could be and nowhere near the kind of levels of resistance which took place in South Ossetia, Abkhazia or Crimea. Just take a look at the map of the Donbass and circle the cities where combats are taking place. You will see Slaviansk, Kramatorsk, Kransyi Liman, Antartsit and maybe one or two more. So what about all the rest?
What about Donetsk. We have all seen the combat footage coming out of Donetsk so let me ask you – how many combatants did you see on that footage? Ten, maybe thirty soldiers? More? Fifty? One hundred? Did you know that Donetsk has a population just under one million people and that the Donetsk Metropolitan area has two million? Any military analyst will tell you that you can easily put 10% of any given population under arms, and 20% with some effort. In other words, the city of Donetsk should be able to generate anywhere between 100’000 and 200’000 men and the Donetsk Metropolitan area anywhere between 200’000 and 400’000 men. While no reliable figures are available at this point, I personally doubt that the entire NAF has much more than maybe 10’000 to 15’000 men in arms (maybe “Juan” can correct me here). In other words, what is clear is that the current level of resistance in the Donbass is at best about 10% of what it could be.
That is most emphatically not something the Kremlin can ignore.
Of course, some wannabe strategists would want Moscow do to what the USA did with Iraq and simply *assume* that Russian forces will be greeted as liberators by a majority of the population of the Donbass and in this case I happen to think that it might even be true, but that is not a good enough reason to move forces in. Sadly, but what is taking place now is what I would call a massive “awareness campaign” for the people of Novorossiia: the obscene alliance of Jewish oligarchs and Galician neo-Nazis is showing its true face and with every shell dropped on the Donbass the prospect of a unitary Ukraine are becoming more and more remote.
One anonymous commentator recently posted this most insightful comment on this blog. He/she wrote: Call me cynic, but invasion is when Russia enters in Ukraine after 3 days of shooting. Liberation is when Russia enters in Ukraine after 3 months of bloody mess. This is absolutely true.
Painful as this may be to admit, the current problem is not that Russia is not ready to intervene in the Donbass, but that the Donbass is not ready to make such an intervention justifiable.
Other factors which affect the Russian stance: changes in the EU
There is no doubt at all that the results of the recent European elections have been received with elation in the Kremlin. I have carefully listened to the reaction to these election results by many commentators in Russia and it is absolutely clear that they have a very different view of what happened than their western counterparts. Where western analysts speaks of a triumph of xenophobic and Right-Wing parties, Russian analysts speak of a victory for anti-EU, anti-NATO and, ultimately, anti-US forces. Furthermore, what is labeled as “Right Wing” in the West is perceived as “conservative” or even “traditionalist” in Russia. One commentator said that the victory of the “Conchita Wurst” freak at the Eurovision Song Contest was the straw that broke the camel’s back and that it had a direct impact on the European rejection of a morally degenerate and politically subservient Europe. I am not sure that the Wurst freak by itself has such a role, but the constant barrage of sicko gender propaganda, combined with a frontal assault on European traditional values probably did.
I wish I had the time to write a detailed analysis of these elections here. I will say that I follow French politics very closely and that I fully agree with the Russian point of view. The National Front is not just a “right wing” movement (although in some aspects it is). It is first and foremost an anti-system movement and party which is deeply affected by the kind of values Alain Soral promotes: the “Left of Labor and the Right of Values”. True, the top leadership of the National Front is still stuck in old “Right of Labor” ideas, but most members are clearly “popular” in their politics, some even very close to Socialist ideas. In fact, I would argue that the entire Right-Left paradigm simply does not apply to Europe any more. Look at all the so-called “Left” parties in France, Germany or the UK. They are all really nasty, hardcore, capitalist and reactionary parties. I prefer to use pro-system and anti-system categories. By ‘system’ I mean the following characteristics:
1) free-market, capitalist, globalist, pro-corporate economic policies
2) promotion of supra-national entities like the EU and NATO
3) total political subservience to the AngloZionist empire
4) support for and constant use of the “Ziomedia” to achieve its goals
5) systematic destruction of traditional European values
6) support for a police state internally
7) support for use of military force externally
These are the policies which the establishment or “system” parties in Europe have promoted for decades and these are the policies which have been rejected in the latest European elections. Now look at Russia’s stance on the very same issues:
1) Officially, Russia is a social/socialist state (Putin’s words in his address to the Federal Assembly). In reality there are still many signs of very strong capitalism in Russia, but they are being regulated and contained. Most of the population is probably far more socialist than the current regime, but compared to the EU/US Russia is definitely a social state.
2) Russia is clearly opposed to the EU and NATO.
3) Russia, at least under Putin, has tried really hard to free itself from the AngloZionist Empire.
4) The Russian media has largely been “de-Zionistized”. There are some exceptions like the notorious Ekho Mosvky (Echo of Moscow, also called “Ekho Matsy” or “Echo of the Matzo”) and the Dozhd (Rain) TV channel, but they have very little or no traction with the general public.
5) Russia clearly support traditional values, especially Christian and Islamic ones.
6) Russia’s policies on civil rights are a mixed bag. Unfortunately, the Kremlin does support Internet censorship, so-called “anti-Piracy” laws, surveillance of Internet Service Providers, etc. The Russian Duma has also passed some terrible laws banning the free discussion of WWII. The good news is that these laws seem to be applied with clear lack of determination and that they are probably more a reaction to the rise of neo-Nazis in the Ukraine than a true attempt at internal political censorship.
7) Russia clearly opposes the use of force in international affairs unless the UNSC gives it’s approval, Russians are attacked or when a vital national strategic interest is threatened.
In other words, the folks in the Kremlin and the French National Front would largely agree with each other and the fact is that historically these two forces get along very well.
Russia is clearly counting on the fact that before the end of the year it might see a much more friendly Europe than it has so far.
Other factors which affect the Russian stance: crypto-alliance with China
Though I wish I could I cannot go into an analysis of the recent Russian-Chinese agreements (others have done so very well – see here, here, here or here). I will just say this:
While, for a number of reasons, the word “alliance” has never been used by Russia or Chinese officials – they prefer to speak of “partnership” – the fact is that what Russia and China have committed to is exactly that: a strategic alliance.
Two huge countries do not commit to a 30 year long full spectrum joint development program without committing to an de-facto alliance. No country decides to commit to a 400 billion dollar deal without committing to a de-facto alliance. This alliance will make it possible for Russia to create a single energy distribution network, meaning that gas could be sent from any place in Russia to any client state. As for China they have basically decided that their energy needs for the next 30 years or more will entirely depend on Russia. So whether the word “alliance” is used or not, we are dealing with a clear strategic and vital pact, the decision to operate in symbiosis if you want. From now on, China will depend on Russia and Russia will depend on China. Put differently, the survival of the other partner will become an existential priority for both countries. I call that a crypto-alliance.
Furthermore, while both sides went to extraordinary lengths to declare that this alliance or, excuse me, “partnership” was not targeted against any third party, and most definitely not against the USA, it of course is. Russia and China are now committed to create a dollar-free economic zone, not only for energy but for all goods and services. And whom do you think the Russian and Chinese military strategists see as their biggest potential enemy? Bulgaria? Nepal? Of course not, it is pretty darn obvious that they both see the US as the number one enemy or, as the Russians used to say, their “main adversary”.
So this is a tectonic shift. Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping have basically committed their countries to a strategic alliance which will define the future of our planet more than any other factor. Already now the combined power of Russia and China far supersedes the power of the AngloZionist Empire, thrown in the BRICS, the SCO, the CSTO and the EEC and will will clearly see the beginning of a consolidation of the Eurasian landmass against the AngloZionist Empire. Here, again, the Russians feel that time is on their sides and that with each passing day they are becoming stronger while the Western plutocracy is becoming weaker.
A look from above
So let us look at the big picture. If we “take-off” from Slaviansk or Donetsk and look at what is taking place on a global, planetary, scale we shall immediately see that the Ukraine is only the latest visible flashpoint of a much bigger struggle: the decolonization of the entire Eurasian landmass. While the US and its EU puppets have their gaze fixed on such “developments” as the (pseudo-) “election” of a non-entity like Poroshenko to the (largely symbolical) position of President of (the completely broke) “Banderastan”, the Chinese and the Russians are busy looking decades down the road with the shared objective to bring down the AngloZionist Empire. In this context, the Ukraine will not be neglected, of course, but each policy decision towards the developments there will be carefully evaluated in the context of this global, over-reaching, strategy.
The Saker.
Dearest Saker,

Excellent observation! The Chess Board is not Ukraine. The Chess Board is Universe.

This is such a right on analysis on the economic, political and social levels. The glorification of homosexuality is part of the cultural agenda of capitalism. If we are all interchangeable parts and children are left to raise themselves, there is no unity between people at the fundamental level i.e. the family—well, then, techno-capitalism rules!
Dear Saker,
If both Obama and Putin are not in cahoots, then why would the Chinese be arrested while Putin is in China?
Obama could have waited few days!
And, why would Putin accept the Ukraine Presidential Elections?

R. Hunter Biden, Burisma Holdings, and Ihor Kolomoisky?
You’ve all likely heard that Joe Biden’s son has joined forces with Burisma Holdings, Ukraine. Now it appears that there’s a Ihor Kolomoisky connection to this story.

Real-life Red Rascal war-porn fiction writer and self-declared CIA agent “Reza Kahlili” has released a news article that the Ayatollah Khamenei has declared jihad on America. The tsunami is washing over the front pages as we speak.
“Kahlili” loves drama; he appears in public wearing wraparound shades, baseball cap, and surgical mask, with an electronic voice distorter, in order to “avoid assassination attempts”. He has been widely discredited when he reported news of a massive explosion in Iran’s Fordow reactor a year ago, and both the United States and Iran took the unusual steps of denouncing the “news”. His last book rolled out at the AIPAC convention, where he’s a favorite speaker.
“Kahlili” is published by Mary Matalin / Threshold Editions, who also handles Dick Cheney and Glen Beck.
Ayatollah Khamenei’s official website so far does not say anything about declaring jihad on America, nor declaring nuclear negotiators as traitors.

Thank you once again!
Nice piece, Saker.
I found this little article about the oil and gas aspect of the annexation af the Crimea. Seems like Uncle Vlad secured a little underground treasure for the Russian Fed:
http://www.counterpunch.org/2014/05/23/crimea-an-eu-us-exxon-screwup/
In the bottom of above article there is a link to another analysis of Putins internal politics and how he has shifted his domestic alliances through his time in office. It bascially says the same as you have done time and again about the tensions between atlanticists/ westernizers and eurasian suveraintists, but take the angle of class and metropolitan middle class vs. rural/ Deep Russia proletariat tension. And rather tongue-in-cheek:

Dear All,
Can you please confirm if any US mercenaries , CIA agents or non-uniformed US personnel is part of this latest Ukrainian rampage on Donetsk ?
I would also love your views on the weekend fatal shooting incident in South California and what does it tell about US society in general ?
Please give me your valuable answers.
Take care
Debanjan
Very good analysis, I’d say, except with regard to Poroshenko. namely, where does he keep his money? If in the zionist hands, then there is no discussion with the monster. That is the modus operandi of the zionazis: have control over few loyal (mostly zionist) oligarchs, thereby, have control over the whole of the economy of the victim entity.
Still, I can’t get over the fact that Russia didn’t prepare the ground, so to speak, in the Ukraine for a less costly alternative–despite being fully conscious of the incoming attack by the zionazis, which rightfully concluded it was the Russia’s soft spot.
On the other hand, whatever freedom the (pro)Russians win in this mess, & they certainly will, they’ll value it greatly, certainly, far more than if it were brought to them at no cost–i.e, by the regular Russian army.
many thanks Saker for your extraordinary work!
Never give in to a bully. Is Russia going to wait until Donetsk is like Fallujah in Iraq?I hope not.We will see US tactic being used in the East of Ukraine to bring the East in to line with Kiev.
Russia should take out Ukariane military air bases etc with airstrikes.Fuck what the US and EU think. If they let them get away with killing civilians in the East of Ukraine then its the beginning of the end for Putin.sentiment will quickly shift negative.
@Anonymous:Russia should take out Ukariane military air bases etc with airstrikes.
Right. You want Russia to act exactly like the Americans would. But consider the long term mess each of these short terms “solutions” created for the USA. War is a *dangerous* and *unpredictable* thing which is much easier to start then to stop. It also inevitably causes untold human suffering. This immediate and almost kneejerk reaction to use bombings to solve any conflict is a typical Western thing to do. Russia and China play a very different game in which time and timing are crucial. And let me repeat here:
With only about 10% of the Donbass/Novorosiia self-defense capabilities actually engaged Russia should not and will not intervene. You can take that to the bank.
Cheers,
The Saker
The American s only bomb the defenceless.why should Russian not take out Ukraine military installations?

´The glorification of homosexuality is part of the cultural agenda of capitalism´
Read Naomi Klein: ´no logo´.
Homosexuality, gay parades en transgenders are completely boring to most people. There is an internet movie clip where someone ´is doing it with a snake´. OK, interesting, I did not know that was possible… But who would think other people than 12 year old boys would ever care to watch this more than 10 seconds?
The gay thing has become an anti Putin logo. I just ask the question to people who bring this up: where do you think 2 gay men walking together are safer: Moskow or Kiev?
(My personal information is that obligate homosexuality is something about 2-5 % of people are born with, and they should have the right to live their lives. A large proportion is still able to procreate, and no, the kids become quite mainstream, as it is not genetic.)
But it is true that in Holland, there is a huge over representation of gays in media shows, just like an over representation of jews in government.

Thank you for posting the above. Jihad means, “Struggle”. As a Shia Muslim, I continuously Struggle against myself, against my personal enemy (Satan), who constantly keeps on telling me to do Evil.
It is my “Free Will” which can lead me to do Evil, thus I have to do continuously Jihad against my “Free Evil” which constantly keeps on telling me to do Evil. Thus, my “Free Will” is my Satan (enemy).
And, because of this my “Free Will” I am best of the Creation, better than Angels. When I supress the Evil, I am better than Angels. When I let Evil overcome me, I am worse than Animals.
Best regards,

Hi Saker,
IMHO Russia has a clear option to intervene without actualy intervening: she should declare a no fly zone above Novorossia (and parts of Harkov+Zaporosnie+Dnipropetrovsk) for humanitarian reasons citing Samantha Power’s R2P doctrine. At every possible forum they should repeat what our Sammy has said :) She’s given the authorization :)
Russia can enforce this no fly zone by simply declaring it, and “paiting” any violating aircraft with radars. She doesn’t have to fire a single shot. The fasists will understand that flying is over. In other words this would be intervention without actual intervention.
This would level the field a bit for the Novorossia resistance as well, lift morale etc.
´With only about 10% of the Donbass/Novorosiia self-defense capabilities actually engaged Russia should not and will not intervene. You can take that to the bank.´
This kind of insight, we can only learn from you.
I had the same knee jerk reaction.
But I still think Kolomoiski and Yarosh should go the way of Zarqawi…
Otherwise it will create a precedent.
I agree about the non-intervention. This is something to be done ONLY when the recipients have made clear that they own the intervention as a part of their solution.
Long words, but unless these folks are willing to be out there in LARGE numbers, getting killed, getting wounded protecting themselves, defending their homes and children then the people simply do not own the idea of taking a stand.
This might seem somehow obscene, but look at it this way.
If Russia intervenes in an overt manner then people die. Chances are that if they do so more people will die than if they did not intervene. Ergo: no net profit by intervening.
Worse yet: what if the people in their homes don’t WANT intervention, what then?
This is civil war. Russia did not make it, although they were a part of the context. In the end, even though the USA and EU were around poking stuff with a dirty stick, THEY did not start the civil war.
The civil war is a matter for the people of Ukraine to sort out. No winners for anyone marching in except as a part of an intra-national force under the UN (Russia would not live with a NATO peace keeping force.)
Sadly the veneer of civilization is very thin. We are going to see that veneer broken. Worse yet, the civil war will become a proxy war Chechens VS whoever the Americans pay.
I also think that easy recourse to war is now a patterned response of the USA. It is not a universal paradigm. It is what we do when we know nothing better. If we only have a hammer then we use a hammer for every job.
May I add to the French picture, it is not just a political backlash, but that one of a society that has been silenced or dumbed down for too long.
There are a lot of grassroot movements going around, which is:
traditional
conservation
anti-PC system
anti- mass immigration
LMPT (Which drew a lot more demonstrators than Maidan did!)
les veilleurs
JRE
Generation Identitaire
Parental rights are being stripped away, the committed Catholics labeled “extremists”, kids as young as 3 being introduced to sex education and homosexuality, being told that gender is irrelevant, increase in unmeployment ,etc… It is touching a raw nerve.
There is a growing consensus that the EU is ill and needs a doctor! But the problem (likewise it seems in the east of Ukraine)is that people will leave it until it is late to really react against the hostile forces. They are prefering to wait and see.
If you are french, you might want to glance at Le Salon Beige to get a snapshot of the situation.
Indeed it is more than just Ukraine, but it is the latest in a line of countries to suffer at the hands of neo-internationlist plutocrat elites .

Dear Friend Anonymous,
@Anonymous : (My personal information is that obligate homosexuality is something about 2-5 % of people are born with, and they should have the right to live their lives. A large proportion is still able to procreate, and no, the kids become quite mainstream, as it is not genetic.)
Excellent put! What people do in closed doors, it is no one’s business. It is between them and their God, and not the society problem.
However, it is the heterosexuals who are the problems. They would like to have sex in public, and if two homosexuals hold hands in public, then they scream murder. Thus, heterosexuals should abstain doing anything in public, even holding hands. Then they a right to uphold the homosexuals to the same standards.
BTW, I am no homosexual. I consider homosexuality to be the biggest sin. But what people do in closed doors and not in public, it is not my business. It doesn’t concern me neither it concerns anyone else.
Best regards,
Mohamed.
I do read and respect the opinions on this blog. However what really stinks is that you guys just cannot stop addressing the gay issue. Leave those people alone! And if you have a problem with Mr/Mrs. Wurst – then YOU have a problem! The old saying goes like this: der biggest haters of the elks are usually elks themselves. In THIS respect many people are just backward – like for example Germany or France was 20-30 years okay. Same time this really weakens your credibility to some folks in the West who could be possible allies!! I really, really could not care less about Mr. Wurst or Mrs. Wiener. I just don’t care!!! Why do you??
Next: it is a common slogan for the new right in the West that “left and right does not apply anymore”. We know this line from the late 20s in Europe by the right wing guys. There is a reason it was called National SOCIALISM.
From my point of view what is happening is this:
On one side you have the EU bureaucrats. You may call many of them US puppets. Many of them directly benefit from what is going on. Double talk and double standards are their daily business. Most of the criticism from the “new right” or Russia concerning those folks is very true.
At the same time what the “new right” has to offer, what they demand, is not obvious at all. This smells similar to the first weeks of the teaparty-movement in the USA. Expect a lot of stupidity coming out.
At the same time neither the established left nor the radical left has any answer to anything, The situation at this moment is completely confusing. As I and some other friends view it: obviously nobody is any more into a better world for everybody. All that matters is me, me, me. We see this breakdown of collectivity everywhere: between countries, in our working places and in private relationships. It is a result of the fact that capitalism – which was till recently promising better life for people (and often did not deliver) – is now openly driving people apart. Issues are (rightfully) seen as null sum games and not any longer as one from which all sides can benefit. This means that the old American approach on politics, because of the underlying failing capitalism and not because they are stupid, is failing. We saw this pattern already in late Yugoslavia.
If – and everything points to it – the EU bloc parties (SD and Conservatives) continue their way of doing politics, as in representing US and major corps. interests only, this will lead to a confrontation with RU and China. It will lead to war.
If the new right in Europe (UKIP, Le Pen, AFD) will be able to push those countries out of the EU-structure aka to “renationalize” them, which means: less exports, more costs of doing business and a whole load of other things weakening the fragile economies even further, it also will mean war. Maybe not against RU or China, but sooner or later those EU-countries might find an appetite for their neighbors.
From this point of view I find it totally irresponsible what NATO, EU, USA and RU are doing right now. It looks VERY grim. And there is no reason for hope coming out of Brussels, Washington or Moscow. And of course not from the Junta’s HQ in Kiev.

Dear Saker,
I fully agree with your analysis except for your take on the National Front: I can tell that you have not been in Europe in over twelve years, and I don’t think your concept of the FN is acute. I am a citizen of Toulon, in the south of France, which has endured an FN mayor for 7 years. Truth is, it is a right wing, fascist, xenophobic governance. At the municipal library, all books in discordance with the FN ideology were removed from the shelves. The FN is antisemitic, for sure, but more importantly, forcefully anti-Arab. FN members speak of Arabs in ways that ashame the French. Furthermore, the FN is absolutely NOT ANTI-system. It is instrumentalized by the elites in power, to convey the idea that anyone who would vote against Europe would be voting for the FN.
That said, I completely agree with your analysis of the pro-system parties. There are three anti-party systems:
– The Front de Gauche, represented by Jean-Luc Mélenchon,
http://www.jean-luc-melenchon.fr/
– the MRC of Jean-Pierre Chevènement
http://www.chevenement.fr/Ukraine-il-est-temps-qu-une-parole-raisonnable-se-fasse-entendre_a1631.html
– the UPR of François Asseulineau.
http://www.upr.fr/
All three of these parties stand behind the Russian position in the Ukraine and stand against the future TAFTA. The UPR wants to exit the EU per article 50. There is a great interview of Asseulineau on “la voix de la Russie.”

Militarily, it seems that it is taking the same shape as what happened in Yugoslavia. Again same reaction from the people, mostly in denial for some and others in shock.
So th 10% quoted by Saker is not surprising at this stage.
It seems that the killing execution style of the “Vostok” was done as a show of force. The attack and counter attack at the airport was a ragged series of probes to draw out the various entities, no doubt including mercenaries on the junta’ side. Airports are nice to have as a Forward Base but any side really needs manpower/ equipment to hold and secure for a time.
Nat
Saker,
Then what if the resistance never grows to the level it needs? Did it in WWII? It isn’t like they will ever believe that Putin has their back. Is it OK for Russia to have tremendous unemployment in the Eastern Ukraine that will drive a million to Russia? So is there any standard that would make Russia intervene? If so, can’t the US create that fairly soon?
Finally, as this mess continues, the sentiment begging for Russian help may go from 50% to 80%, but they still won’t know how to do anything. The experience of these two new republics is not simply that they need more people, it’s that they need organizational ability, which will not be coming from Russia, and there will be no paychecks from Poland or Blackwater.
Paul
Dear Anonymous,
@Anonymous : IMHO Russia has a clear option to intervene without actualy intervening: she should declare a no fly zone above Novorossia (and parts of Harkov+Zaporosnie+Dnipropetrovsk) for humanitarian reasons citing Samantha Power’s R2P doctrine. At every possible forum they should repeat what our Sammy has said :) She’s given the authorization :)
Don’t you think that it will give the Empire an open invitation to unilaterally apply a no fly zone over Syria?
It will then become the Law of Jungle.
Best regards,
Mohamed.
Saker,
I came across your website by chance after spotting a tweet a few weeks ago. I’d like to thank you for your regular and concise updates on here. While other sites are marred by Euromaidan/pro-establishment crap, the moderation of comments on here has allowed a continuous discussion without fear of it being derailed.
Here in Britain, people of my age (college students) seem to be more worried about the length of Kate Middleton’s dress rather than what is going on in the rest of the world. The obsession with celebrity culture has helped deflect attention away from real world problems. When there is a political discussion about Russia, the default BBC-influenced consensus tends to be “omg look at what is going on with gay people over there”. If only they spent more time doing research rather than watching “reality” tv.
Furthermore, there are many who do oppose the farce in Ukraine, but they do so through an anti-EU prism. Basically, anything negative that can be linked to the EU (e.g. Ukraine) will be exploited by UKIP’s Farage and likes to push for that all-important referendum.
Keep up the hard work and thanks again!
What strategy do you think the current rebels should use? Can they flee to Russia? Is that their only chance?
Is your view that Russia shouldn’t help likely to lead to the goal of a united Ukraine that the Kremlin seems to want? Or is it likely to lead to the break up of the state?
Dearest Friend Nat,
@Nat : Parental rights are being stripped away, the committed Catholics labeled “extremists”, kids as young as 3 being introduced to sex education and homosexuality, being told that gender is irrelevant, increase in unmeployment ,etc… It is touching a raw nerve.
I couldn’t have said it any better. Yes, the World is getting sick because the envelope keeps on being pushed on everyone of us, not just only in EU.
Best regards,
Mohamed.
Finally a topic where I don’t have to just remain a student on the sidelies but can add some knowledge also.
Saker: “Furthermore, what is labeled as “Right Wing” in the West is perceived as “conservative” or even “traditionalist” in Russia.”
It’s labeled right wing by our current media establishment. Traditional is a better description and we don’t have to go that far back and these parties would for the most partbe mainstream.
Saker: “One commentator said that the victory of the “Conchita Wurst” freak at the Eurovision Song Contest was the straw that broke the camel’s back and that it had a direct impact on the European rejection of a morally degenerate and politically subservient Europe. I am not sure that the Wurst freak by itself has such a role, but the constant barrage of sicko gender propaganda, combined with a frontal assault on European traditional values probably did.”
We, for the most part, don’t mind a bit of a freak show now and then and most people see the Eurovision as a spectacle where just about anything goes. The wurst-person (he or she) is not really an issue for that many. The issue is when that sort of spectacle is taken away from the Eurovision and brought into our classrooms and presented as just normal, even something to be lauded. Then many people react to it.
Saker: “In fact, I would argue that the entire Right-Left paradigm simply does not apply to Europe any more.”
This is so. But not in the rethoric, especially that of the left. There it still aapplies even if it’s getting increasingly contradictory.
Saker: “Look at all the so-called “Left” parties in France, Germany or the UK. They are all really nasty, hardcore, capitalist and reactionary parties”
They are. But they still portray themselves as if they were not.
And another huge thing you don’t really touch upon is the debate over immigration. Basically all the new “right wing” parties are mainly called so because they want to restrict non european immigration into Europe.
The “left” claim to figt for this immigration and even believe it should be increased and use a humanitarian standpoint for arguing this.
The once who gain are hard core captalists, who view the left as useful idiots, who can use mass immigration to crash wellfare systems, destroy unions and lower wages. It’s much easier for the elite to rule over a populace the more fragmented that populace is. Ideally the elite wants to do away with European nation states all together and make the populations into one great mass of serfs that can be pitted against eachother with ease if the need arise. One big Ukraine or -92 Russia one could say.
I think that you are right about what the elite wants fot us and our children. It is indeed simply for all of us to become serfs and the elite to become a planetary oligarchy rulling over a divided and debased mankind.
Ukraine is just a (minor) detail…
Dear Saker,
thank you for your brilliant analysis – as we wake up earlier (;o) I have been avidly waiting for your analysis. Until now only “Voice of Russia” gave a live report, our MSM media are busy “interpreting” the EU elections – it really was like an earthquake. The EU elite is afraid that the victory of the anti-EU parties will lead in one or the other country to leaving the EU altogether. The news from the Ukraine are scarce.
BTW, through a German blog
http://www.chartophylakeion.de/blog/tag/ukraine/#.U4S_0PugWhp
– which happens to have the Strelkow Interview (Igor Strelkow: Kampfgeist (Interview vom 26.05.2014) today, I found a graphic by the Euromaidan German site (somebody obviously had the nerve to look it up) that lists many of the blogs, websites, journals etc who are “paid by Putin”. It looks that they have not found you yet, but Ron Paul is there together with Kisseljow.
Look it up in the comments of the above site – you won’t like to go to Euromaidan sites. It’s really weird.
Greetings
Angelika
With most of the left in Europe having been taken over, or at least neutered by zionazis, and looking no different from what the left is supposed to be opposed to, and the right now saying the things that resonate with people that the left used to say, it’s no wonder the right is doing well.
Be careful with the support of FN and assorted parties. They are VIRULANTLY anti-muslim. But at the same time they are anti-EU and anti-Euro, which I like.
But I dont think I would trust them. These parties are mostly opportunists who prey on peoples fears, whether they are real threats (european union) or imagined ones (Islam) to seek election.
Dear Saker,
At the end of your excellent comments you used the words over-reaching strategy to describe the de facto strategic partnership of Russia and China. Perhaps you meant overarching and not over-reaching, which would mean that both countries are biting off more than they can chew, thus indicating a low probability of final success? I think that on the contrary it is the Anglo-Zionists who are over-reaching at this time! Keep up the good work, as we depend on people like you to get real information from the beleaguered Eastern and Southern areas of Ukraine.
An American Russophile
Hi, I am James!
I am really sorry to read so many hateful and misinformed statements about “gays”.
I come from a Christian 3rd world country. In our culture we always had lady boys – long before the Americans came. Even the Church does not attack them. They are people that think they are girls in a male body. Many of them have (str8) boyfriends.
Those lady boys are protected by the community. If someone assaults a lady boy it is like you assault a girl and you better run or you’ll get a broken nose! There are no laws against it and never have been. So much about Europe, Russia and US to be “free” countries. Let people choose!
What are the hang-ups you have in Europe about people being different? As long as you protect your friend and yourself and you care for him why is there a problem?
There is a saying in my language: only people with a bad (sex) life hate others having a good life.
James (originally from the Philippines)
PS: I watched Mrs. Wurst on TV and we had a big, big party! So funny!!
First of all, I think you are overly optimistic. I wish you were right but I´m afraid this can end up being much bigger mess. And it will be mess that wasn´t necessary at all if there had been a willigness from EU to have some kind of dialoge with Moscow about Ukraine last year. It´s all result of pure arrogance. Both US and EU think they are strong enough to act irresposibly and never be called to face consequeces – and they might be right. I also agree with Poland and Baltics in one thing – EU is way too passive. Germany should kick Poland in ass long time ago and show them their place. (e.g. Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania plan to establish joint military unit – http://voiceofrussia.com/2014_05_27/Ukraine-Poland-Lithuania-plan-to-establish-joint-military-unit-8461/)
Instead EU is sleepwalking into conflict with Russia and seems to be unable to change the course. When it comes to USA, it´s clear they don´t mind civil war in Ukraine. Why should they? It´s far away, doesn´t hurt them and keeps Russia busy and vulnerable to more bullying.
Second: There is an intersting lecture by Anatol Lieven, british policy analyst:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4YTpvEhb-I&feature=youtu.be
He agrees that EU is largely responsible for crisis in Ukraine, that only viable solution is federalisation and that main winner is China. But he also thinks that without Ukraine there is no Eurasian union and that Crimea annexation was a grave mistake.
Third: I don´t unterstand why Putin made such theatre about having right to use army to protect ethnic Russians in Ukraine, when it doesn´t seem he is planning to use it. It has made unnecessary expectation – now he is going to look weak for many Russians (and eastern Ukrainians) and Kiev junta can use it as propaganda.
I cannot sleep well for last three months and now I’m catching the news brokenly.
I’m Russian, I live in Moscow and I have no doubt that those people who are being killed every day in South-East are my brothers in blood.
WHO LET THEM DO IT TO MY BROTHERS?! HOW LONG GOD WILL BE ABLE TO LOOK AT IT SILENTLY?!

@Mohamed: Please notice that the biggest sex crimes against kids were committed by the catholic church in the Philippines:
In 2002 the Catholic Church apologized for sexual abuses, including adultery, homosexuality and child abuse by two hundred priests over the previous 20 years.
In 2003 at least 34 priests were suspended in a sex abuse scandal involving sexual harassment of women. 20 were from a single diocese.
In 2011, a priest accused of sexually abusing a 17-year old female minor is sheltered by his Bishop, despite calls for his surrender to civil authorities-
And those are only some reported cases. Same happens/ed in England, USA, France, Italy, Germany. So who is endangering kids? Mrs. Wurst? Mrs. Wurst is only gulity of one thing: PLEASE SHAVE!!..^^
I’m french, living in France, i totally agree with you as for a huge anti-US anti-NATO opinion existing here.
The right-wing paper, Le Figaro, as far as Ukraine is concerned, publishes papers largely biased in west’s perspective, but it’s completely at odds with the readers opinion, as can be stated in the comments posted, 80% or more promote Putin.
sincerely,
jean
There is something that Putin and his circle dislike more than NATO in Ukraine, and it is Russian Nationalism. The DPR folks fighting in Donbass are mainly Russian Nationalists (nevermind that the majority hold Ukrainian citisenship and have their Ukrainian passports, for Russian Nationalists there is no such thing as “Ukraine”). Helping these folks in their fight against Ukrainian government amounts to supporting Russian nationalism in Russia proper. If they would win in Donbass, their positions would be reinforced in Moscow itself. This is why Putin will not help DNR, he will let Poroshenko crush the Russian Nationalist insurection and then he will negotiate the price of gas and oil and voila: business as usual…
If you are going to be anti system you need to propose solutions that are better than the system and not worse. Parties such as the French NF or God help us, Golden Dawn, have nothing to offer but racism and scapegoating. They strengthen the Euro elites one of whose chief propaganda weapons is to call those who oppose the EU xenophobes or racists. Claude is absolutely right – the NF is very useful to the establishment.
As for the homosexual issue it is perfectly reasonable for social conservatives to say it should be tolerated rather than celebrated but using homophobic language such as calling homosexuals freaks is counter productive as well as cruel.
Dear Sirs,
I would just like to make the point that NOT all Jews support this insane regime change policy of the west. I, as a Jew, am 100% against Nuland, Kholomoisky, and Kerry/Obama. As a Jew from the FSU whose father and grandfather served in the Red Army, and great grandfather who served in the white army, I know history. The Red Army destroyed Hitler’s killing machine and saved European Jewery and Europe. Remember there are Jews who agree with your point of view.
“Kiev is believed to be in control of the airport at this time.”
Everything I’ve seen says the self defense forces control the airport.
Ополчение Донбасса оттеснило войска хунты и контролирует аэропорт (видео включение из Донецка) (The militia of Donbass pushed the troops of the junta and controls the airport (video broadcast from Donetsk))
http://rusvesna.su/news/1401186045 (trans) http://translate.yandex.net/tr-url/ru-en.ru/rusvesna.su/news/1401186045
“on may 27 at the information centre of the South-Eastern front” held a Skype-a broadcast from Donetsk with Vladimir Skobtsova.
“By today’s morning in addition to the destruction of the infrastructure, the junta did nothing, ” said Vladimir Skobtsov. Airport is controlled by our militia in battle victory we have. The junta has receded, although we did not use all of our strength. Participated in the battles of the special forces, the “Vostok”battalion, which pushed the military junta. But work in the city enemy snipers shot a car “Ambulance”. This is done in order to shoot at those militias, who will rescue the wounded.
What we lack is a weapon to neutralize aviation and armored vehicles. Be it from us, we would have drove the fascists of Kiev itself. And Ukrainian military are on hand: during the retreat, they blow up their warehouses with ammunition that they have not given to us. At the pace they do not remain what to shoot.”
The site rusvesna.su is working intermittently and may be experiencing another DDoS attack.
I agree that sending in troops right now is a bad idea. However, if the resistance in Donetsk and Lugansk is crushed, it will be very bad for Russia for a whole number of reasons. Many Russians would have a big problem with it. It would also be perceived as unforgivable weakness from outside. One way or another, this should not be allowed to happen.
“Third: I don´t unterstand why Putin made such theatre about having right to use army to protect ethnic Russians in Ukraine, when it doesn´t seem he is planning to use it. It has made unnecessary expectation – now he is going to look weak for many Russians (and eastern Ukrainians) and Kiev junta can use it as propaganda.”
I have to agree with this, Putin raised people’s hopes too much.
It’s all well and good to talk about people in Donetsk and Lugansk not rising up in sufficient numbers. But what about those who did, partially because they expected the promised protection from Russia? Now it seems we in Russia should stand idly by and watch them go down in flames. There is a lot of private initiative to help in one way or another, but people are getting understandably frustrated. Private initiative can only take you so far, and we have the state with vastly more money and trained military personnel for a reason. I am sure there is support that is not immediately visible, the question is, is there enough? The people on the ground are not feeling it right now. We shall see soon enough.
It’s also pretty clear that the West is using gay rights as a propaganda weapon against Russia and it doesn’t actually give a damn about the welfare of Russian homosexuals.
Over the last couple of centuries we’ve seen time and again what happens when a bunch of ideologues with a bright idea convince themselves that they can create a much better society on some abstract basis. The results have consistently been disastrous, whether it’s the original Bolsheviks devastating Russia in the early twentieth century or the neoliberal market Bolsheviks in the Nineties. The method that has actually led to improvements in human rights has been to move existing institutions in the direction of greater freedom in an organic way. Instrumentally. Over time. Without displaying contempt for the mores of the society you’re trying to reform.
What does the West stand for? Neoliberal capitalism as the only way to run the world until the planet expires and attacks on countries with an uncooperative government in the name of human rights.
What is the antidote? National sovereignty, genuine democracy and social justice. Social justice includes treating minorities such as homosexuals decently.
If a man deserves some prize due to peace, he is Putin (not Nobel prize, it lost any piece of respect). Give asilyum to Snowden, the greatest whistleblower of recent times (in fact I believe the agenda of empire had to be rushed because of those revelations). Then acted decisively to prevent another catastrophe: the invasion of Syria. And with an impeccable diplomacy, removed the remains of the “Weapons of Mass Destruction”. And now, do not give in to provocation of the West, quite the contrary, “suggests” Western leaders do yoga to relax. He is the guy.
Being opposed to the glorification of guy culture is different from supporting discrimination against gays. If only 2-10% of people are gay, then, fine. My objection is to when sexual orientation becomes a primary means of self identification when it is basically a private matter. Am I going to be required to check yet another box on a government form? woman check; heterosexual check. Attacking Russia as being against human rights because of Putin’s stand on the broadcasting of gay culture is now one of the corporate media’s big talking points. It is a red herring and everyone goes into a knee jerk reaction about the issue. Here in California they are rewriting gays into the text books? Now they are a full fledged minority based on gender identification. !!!!

What is Putin planning?
Thank you for the fascinating news and insights, Juan and Saker.
1. Regarding the agreement between Russia and China – what they are establishing is also foundations for something to last far longer than 30 years duration. What important area they have NOT agreed to, I just cannot think of – maybe dog grooming standards :). Tourism? Youth exchanges, Education exchanges at various levels? Co-operation in key areas of research? Check, check, check. I would love to know more about the plans for joint research in medicine and high tech, perhaps plans to build a space station and then a permanent moon colony together – but that is too early yet.
2. Just a few years after the US invaded Iraq, some Chinese academics at Peking University published a paper, where they basically said that the US would be going down hill, and the job of the rest of the world was to make sure that the US did not do anything stupid while this process was going on. I’m sorry, I have looked for the reference to this – unfortunately did not save it.
3. I was astonished to read your account of the change in the attitude andbehaviour of the Chechens, and the change in attitude towards them by the Russians. If Putin can achieve this – surely he can achieve something quite interesting in Ukraine to make the US government gnash its teeth in frustration.. Especially given that the US has no bright bulbs at the top.
4. The Novorossiya eastern areas will have their “consciousness raised,” – under the lessons of the Right Sector, if fighting goes on much longer. However, the western and central inhabitatants have also got to be having second thoughts, when soldiers are bewing killed for refusing to obey orders, or trying to switch sides.
The rest of the world is having its consciousness raised too – I noted the generally friendly attitudes of top correspondents towards putin at his lengthy press conference at the St. Perersburg business chinwag.
5. I have not seen any good report of what percentage of votes the Right Sector & company got – but one story said 2-3%. If true – this is what a typical “joke” candidate might get. If you have any information on this, please say what it is.

@Mohamed: Don’t you think that it will give the Empire an open invitation to unilaterally apply a no fly zone over Syria? It will then become the Law of Jungle.
No, I don’t think so. The Empire kinda lacks means to enforce anything in the Ukraine. On the other hand, Russia does have the force in Syria to deter the USA. This is the real reason behind the USA not attacking Syria last year. Ie. Russia said “no”.
The USA in modern times has always wisely avoided any adversary that has the ability to actually shot back.
Saker said : ” If we “take-off” from Slaviansk or Donetsk and look at what is taking place on a global, planetary, scale we shall immediately see that the Ukraine is only the latest visible flashpoint of a much bigger struggle: the decolonization of the entire Eurasian landmass.”
I absolutely agree with this. But as always I take a pan-Slavic view on Ukraine, and what I see is a DISASTER !!!
I wonder why nobody is paying attention to this simple fact:
ALL European countries which disintegrated since 1991. are Slavic! (Yugoslavia 1991., USSR 1991., Czechoslovakia 1993., Serbia-Montenegro 1999.-2006., Ukraine 2014.).
Nobody is going to convince me that this is not a result of a designed plan that is anti-Slavic in nature!
Russia is making a big mistake if it does not pay attention to this development.
Yes, we have to see the big picture, but I wonder what the families of murdered Russians and pro-Russian Ukrainians are feeling right now about Putins hesitation to send the army in and save them ?
I remember how we Serbs were feeling in 1999. waiting hopelessly for Russia to defend us from NATO.
My sympathies go to the victims in Ukraine of the Anglo-Zionist empire, whom Putin obviously considers collateral damage in the great design of “decolonization of the entire Eurasian landmass.”
A nice idea, but what I see in reality is dead Slavs, again!
The Wend.
I analyze the May 25th EU parliament elections as follows:
The eurosceptic wave has transnational reasons, best proof of that fact being that it takes place in most if not all EU member countries, even with widely varying degrees and shapes: such a series of eurosceptic progresses in different countries can not be the result of reject of President X in this country nor Prime Minister Y in that country, Occam’s razor strongly militates against such an idea.
The basic force is a reaction against part or all of EU institutions, aggravated or sweetened by different economic conditions and particular factors to each country.
What needs to be underlined is how diverse are those eurosceptic movements. Taking as a clear and I think unquestionable criteria of euroscepticism the will to repatriate in one’s nation at least part of those powers that already have been transfered to the EU, we obtain a most diverse group including:
– A pro-free-market and pro-free-trade sovereignism the Farage way in Britain
– A pro-State and pro-protectionism sovereignism the Le Pen way in France
– An anti-Euro, anti-NATO, anti-banks and ecologist movement the Grillo way in Italy
– A solely anti-Euro otherwise pro-EU movement the Lucke way in Germany
– A prioritary anti-immigration and islamosceptic movement the Wildert way in the Netherlands
– Neo-fascist and neo-nazi movements with Jobbik in Hungary and Golden Dawn in Greece
The basic reaction of reject takes very different forms, reflecting long term and heavy trends in each country. That’s the reason why the main sovereignist party is free-tradist and free-market oriented in Britain while its French counterpart is more Statist and protectionist. The opposite would have been surprising, n’est-ce pas ? ;)
When saying yes to EU institutions and policy, everybody becomes the same. When saying no, everybody does it in his own way. :)
Such diversity will definitely prevent any parliamentary group gathering most not to speak of all of these euroscepticisms. Neo-fascists and neo-nazis will keep being firewalled by all the others. A group including France’s FN and Italy’s M5S is very difficult to imagine. A group including Britain’s UKIP and France’s FN might be possible but is very far from certain.
Depending on the particulars of negotiations, one or both of UKIP and FN might be able to create a group around itself. Or not. At stake are more possibilities to intervene in the parliamentary process and access to information.
That being said, euroscepticism cannot and will not become a force acting through EU institutions the likes of the European parliament, for the very strong reason of eurosceptics being primarily French, Brits, Italians, Dutch, you name it, rather than bland EU-rightists nor bland EU-leftists. If euroscepticism is to have real consequences and obtain results for the restoration of sovereign democracies in the different EU member countries, it will have to act through national instutions: a national eurosceptic government could distance its country from EU policies, either totally by exiting the EU or partially by stopping unilaterally the concerned policies and negotiating afterwards.
(to be followed)
Confirming the above recommendation, and would also like Mr. Saker’s opinion

Ukraine: A military-industrial complex to die for
By Gregory J Moore
http://atimes.com/atimes/Central_Asia/CEN-01-270514.html
These industries are either not mentioned in western press, or dissed as being old, useless, of no importance – but in actual fact, getting them and the military secrets associated with them would be quite the prize. The US 2nd option would be to destroy the factories, by promoting massive attacks. So – not going to happen, is my guess.
During the space race of the 1960’s, the US got a big boost, first of all, from having German scientists and engineers like Werner von Braun, and then also the engineers who got laid off when the Canadian Avro Arrow jet was abruptly discontinued. Smart, creative, dedicated people all went to work for NASA.
What similar large group can the US get now? Working in scientific research in the US is getting more and more difficult …

A few observations on the theme that Russia and China are playing the long game of attempting to extricate themselves from the clutches of the Empire, and to create viable indigenous versions of modernity.
Perhaps that process until recently faced greater challenges within Russia, which now, influenced by events in the wake of the subversion of the Ukraine, have somewhat been mitigated.
One of these is the demonstrated capacity of the Empire to subvert societies via NGOs, ‘colour revolution’ type shenanigans and destabilizing financial system attacks.
Another is the situation-normal diversity of geo-political and geo-economic perspectives, ideologies, agendas, beliefs and so on within Russia, undermining the ability to form a strong, relatively cohesive support for consequential new initiatives.
The crystallized awareness of Russians that they are being targeted, demonized, unfairly sanctioned, and so on, has handed Putin’s leadership and those supporting his policies a large repertoire of new policy choices and immediate policy-initiative-leverage.
Furthermore, events in the Ukraine seem to have increased the ranks of those of the population of Europe who want to head towards the exit, towards the fresh air of vassal-free status.
More Europeans seem to be seeing and not liking the results of generations of post world war 2 subservience to the Empire, and increasing entanglement in the disempowering EU bureau-talkcrazy. And as many here have noted, increasing numbers of Europeans and even North Americans admire Russia and Putin, despite the deluge of propaganda.
With many qualifications, and many unknowns, one might be forgiven for seeing the entire human prospect, Saker, as suddenly brighter;especially should the China/Russia ‘partnership’ actually widely encourage and practice win-win instead of the Empires’ we-very-few-win, you-countless-minions-lose, pathology
(follow-up)
The most important change from that point of view is in France:
– Italy’s eurosceptic M5S maintained its influence but stopped its rise
– Netherlands’s eurosceptics (or anti-immigrationists) lost much influence
– German AfD’s success is 7% of the electorate, too few to have real national influence
– Spain in spite of having been most cruelly stricken by EU policies is stoic: a leftist eurosceptic party gained 8% of the vote and that’s all
– Greece, even more devastated than Spain, reacted primarily with leftist Syriza but that party no matter how anti-austerity is a polite opponent of EU policies, it is not ready to rock the boat the way of Italy’s M5S nor France’s FN. The Golden Dawn in addition to being repellent is anyway small at 9%
– Britain put the UKIP in front of course, and Britain’s exit (“Brexit”) is a realistic scenario within a few years. But even if that happened, the EU while weakened would not be fatally wounded: Britain is neither in the euro nor in Schengen’s free circulation zone to begin with, and above all though a large country it is not at the core of the EU
By contrast, France’s exit would definitly terminate the EU, because of the country’s size and centrality to the EU, and even more of the counter-shocks of such an event: it is extremely difficult to imagine Italy remaining in such a circumstance, and let’s not even speak of Britain! Could Germany, Spain and Poland remain the only large countries and continue the EU with some -not all- of the less populated countries, that’s dubious to the extreme. So French exit would result in termination of EU experiment.
Frexit could seem impossible until recently. After the May 25th vote, it is now longer. Front National gained 25% of the vote, and another party with near-identical euroscepticims gained 4%. It remains a lesser probability scenario, but it can no longer be discarded as irrealistic.
The reason why that scenario could happen is that while France has only begun application of those EU common policies which resulted in economic disasters in Spain and to a somewhat lesser extent in Italy, the French are already furious enough to overcome Italians, not to speak of Spaniards, in euroscepticism. If François Hollande continues applying the EU common policies instead of acting forcefully for the policies to be changed – which would need very hard negociations with German government – similar economic calamity will befall France as befell Italy, or even Spain. And the French will conclude that if EU policies cannot be changed from within, then down with the EU.
Opinion polls in France show a stark lowering of pro-EU feelings in 2013 compared to 2012. At the same time, when asked do we stay or get out of the EU, only a quarter says out, and almost as many say they don’t care one way or the other as say let’s stay in. Imagine stark recession, stark unemployment rise, lowering of salaries, devastation of youth over that – in a word, the Italian or even the Spanish scenario – and the eurosceptic wind will become a tornado. For starters, how long will the 35% or so who say they don’t care in or out continue being so indifferent?
(follow up and end)
Eurosceptic as I am, I strongly wish my country to avoid the economic calamity which is at our doors, and I want Hollande to finally free his mind, find himself a spine and use his powers – he has all that it takes – to force deep changes in EU common policies. Evolution is always better than revolution, and Frexit would be revolution.
Listening to Hollande’s speech on Monday evening, I am however very pessimistic. And if the French president neglects his duties of defending his countries’ interests the way Italian and Spanish politicians neglected their duties, is it reasonable to hope even during one second that the German chancellor can fulfill Hollande’s duties in addition to her owns? Of course it is not.
We French are in for extension of economic calamity and political crisis. The EU is in for possible if not probable dismantlement within the present decade.
I think its a mistake to cast the world into terms of West against East, Christian vs Muslim, hetro vs homo etc. The strength of the SU was that it had an internationalist engender and could attract supporters in the West which would undermine it from within – as it were.
Its also shortsighted for Russia to align with West xenophobic and fascist parties – whatever short term gain seems to beckon, Western fascism is based on hatred of slavs. Moreover Russia will alienate every Left anti-imperialist if it allies with fascists, not to mention undercutting its own supposed anti-fascist struggle in Ukraine.
Russia is returning to State Capitalism after free market capitalism failed in the 90s. But its still capitalist. Russian oligarchs have interests in the West and those interests undermine the struggle against the West.
Donetsk/Lugansk, since they are in struggle have the potential to shape the situation politically, if they survive. One strength is mobilization of the working class. They start to do this by nationalization of Akhmetovs empire. They should continue along this path, organising strikes etc

dusty 16:20,
What. You. Said. All of it.
Also, I’m going to agree with Mohamed about homosexuality: really, who cares what people do in private? The issue is the importance of discretion in public behavior, and that is a double-edged sword. Pedophilia, otoh, is a totally different issue, and it’s wrong regardless of the genders involved. And what used to be called statutory rape, an adult having sex with anyone under 18, is an unfortunately common heterosexual phenomenon. Also, in terms of gay parenting, there are a couple of places where solid, methodologically-sound research on both issues has been done, and a *lot* of spurious stuff by people with axes to grind and made-up results that fall apart completely when examined the least bit closely. And in fact, the well-done stuff distinguishes between pedophilia and hebephilia (sex w/teenagers), and although I admit I haven’t looked at it lately, the preponderance of well-done studies showed no discernible difference in pedophilia, hebephilia or parenting outcomes (including child gender identity) between gays and straights.
More to the point, the whole thing is being used as an extremely effective wedge issue because it does draw such strong emotions on both sides. And. It. Sure. Does. Keep. Us. Divided., rather than focused and working together on the stuff that really matters.
K from CGN 16:25,
I absolutely agree. As a recovering Lefty, I too still have a few concerns about rightwing groups. First is what I see as a frightening amount of anger/hatred directed at immigrants, minorities and, certainly here in the US, women. My second major concern, again at least here, is that they still seem to be True Believers in neoliberal capitalism: competition rather than cooperation, no regulation, tax rates too low to permit the government to provide much of any services at all, and of course “makers” or Ubermenschen deserve all their often ill-gotten gains while “takers” are Untermenschen and deserve nothing at all.
But what about taking care of people? Widows and orphans and fair weights and measures were the complaints of most of the OT prophets, for gosh sakes, and here we are all these years later still managing not to. Instead, we keep on arguing about single-payer healthcare, public education, maintaining an adequate infrastructure and, oh yes, some sort of safety net for the less fortunate — disability, pensions, food for hungry children. Tithing once upon a time met at least some of those needs but in a divided and secular society — well, is there any way we can all work together on this?
If I were waving a magic wand, I’d also throw in a fair and just legal system, one that respects a rule of law rather than “persons”, status or money. You know, Equality Under The Law. (yeah, dream on, Nora — hasn’t happened here yet and isn’t likely to anytime soon. Maybe somewhere else??)
Excellent analysis, Saker!
For those who point out that the “extreme right” parties are anti-Islamic, it should be pointed out the EU elites use Islam like they use “gender” — to destroy Europe’s Christian traditions and customs for the sake of their global financial paradise. If Europeans are ever to throw off US hegemony and take back control of their destinies, they have no choice but to resist the Islamic invaders.
It might also be pointed out that no European politician has been as critical of imperialist US policies in Iraq, Iran, and elsewhere as Jean-Marie himself.

“Kiev is believed to be in control of the airport at this time.”
Everything I’ve seen says the self defense forces control the airport.
As I said above, it is not at all clear who controlled the airport at the beginning or end of this operation from what can be read on the web. Both sides seem to be claiming the precise opposite.
What is clear is that Vostok Batallion and some sort of Ukrainian force confronted each other in armed combat, and that the position of the Ukrainian force became so severe during the fight they called in “danger-close” air strikes on their own positions at the airport and surrounding area that ended up killing large numbers of people both military and civilian. Additionally, two Kamaz trucks were attacked and something happened during the attack that may have resulted in numerous Vostok casualties.
The end result can be seen in the heaps of bodies at the morgues and pictures of dead civilians killed all over town and multiple buildings on fire.
The Ukrainian side is clearly lying when they say they didn’t suffer a single casualty in the whole affair.
“Allah is Satan.”
When I was maybe about six, I imagined God up in the sky peering down at all of us screaming, “My Dad’s bigger than your Dad” — and not exactly being very happy.
I.e., you’re as entitled to your beliefs as anyone else. So is everyone else. Meanwhile, we’re all stuck on the same crowded planet. Try worrying more about the state of your own soul and less about anyone else’s. Or at least have the manners to keep some of your thoughts private rather than obligatorily insulting a person you don’t even know. I don’t think that’s quite what Jesus is asking of us. Also, it’s incredibly rude. Nekulturna even, though you sound more American than anything else.

Yet another Anonymous has spoken. This one has stated that “I find it totally irresponsible what NATO, EU, USA and RU are doing right now.”
The comment confuses me. Accepting that NATO, EU and USA have acted irresponsibly, what would a ‘responsible’ response be from RU?
From my vantage, I marvel at how very responsibly Vladimir Putin is acting and has acted.

the murders at Isla Vista (Univ Calif, Santa Barbara)
are sociologically meaningless because they’re unique. the killer was a mentally ill student from a family of Hollywood privilege. the police did not place him under psychiatric arrest, as his family had requested, because “he was not a danger to himself or to others.” danger means violence or not feeding himself; or so it goes in my Calif. town with a similar demographic.
the categories of violence which now carry meaning are:
1) aggrieved working class white men who dress up in camo and shoot up a McDonald’s at lunch, then kill themselves.
2) gang murders.
3) police murders right out in the open, overwhelmingly of young men of color.
schoolyard shootings caused by bullying, all the way down to junior high school; like football players beating up or murdering their girlfriends,
seem to have passed post 9/11.
so there’s your current sociology of murder- USA, apart from the usual reasons.
cheers, as Saker likes to say,
Bogdan
First of great article first time reader. The masks are starting to fall and the results are obvious the US and Western Europe are essentially broke have no gold and rely strictly on projection of power, propaganda and fiat currency to keep the dog and poney show going. The petro dollar is on its last legs (the saoudi will quickly ally themselves with russia and china when the heat comes)US so called leadership is essentially hysterical at this point, they are overwhelmed by the narowness of therir minds, and the immensity and complexity of the problems they are facing. US Leadership is not only in denial its outright delusional, refusing to face the new realities like the rise of china and Russia, Americans cant imagine a world where they dont dominate, natural since they have never known one. Finally traditional values are passed down for a reason, they have passed the test of time, the globalist, will meet their downfall, because human nature, can be ignored for a bit but cant be suppressed. Thanks for your great work keep em coming.
@VINEYARDSAKER
I truly detest your comment that “the current problem is not that Russia is not ready to intervene in the Donbass, but that the Donbass is not ready to make such an intervention justifiable”:
it amounts to nothing less than the usual _blaming the victim_ whitewash.
Putin – who is nobody and nothing without his capitalist monies from oil&gas sales to his capitalist “partners” and their sleazy “investments” in Russia – is now cowardly hiding behind that very line…
At the very least, if you are fluent in Russian, it behooves you to read the first paragraph of the latest KPRF press release http://kprf.ru/party-live/cknews/131705.html, which details a bestial crime of Kyev fascists, who massacred an ambulance-truckload of wounded defenders of Donbass…
“not ready to make such an intervention justifiable”… Incredible…
