Today’s events in the Ukraine have seen both a dramatic escalation and yet another complete flop. Let’s restate here the fact which are not in dispute by any part
- The Ukrainian junta has launched what it calls a major counter-terrorist operation against the city of Slaviansk.
- Combat helicopters were used.
- Armored personnel carriers were used.
- A number of checkpoints have been taken over by the attacking force.
- Two (possibly three) combat helicopters were shot down.
- The attacking side reports two fatalities on their side and one amongst the pro-Russian insurgency. The pro-Russian insurgents confirmed these figures.
That’s about it. In military terms this translates into “total flop”. Let me re-state some basic things again in the form of a Q&A:
Q: What are the “checkpoints” which were seized today?
A: These are makeshift checkpoint made of tires, wood, metal bars, stones, some concrete blocks, etc. They are defended by a ragtag mix of younger men with assault or hunting rifles, some civilians armed with bars, sticks, rods, and a motley assortment of men and women of different ages just standing around to “help if needed”. Normally, a single APC could easily just drive through such a “checkpoint”. I suppose that hidden form view there might be some snipers and possibly some guys with anti-tanks weapons, but today they were neither seen nor heard.
Q: So where are the most combat capable defense forces?
A: Further inside the city
Q: Who were the attacking forces?
A: Though there have been plenty of rumors about the Right Sector or the newly created National Guard, all the footage seems to show only regular army units which told that they were sent to defend the population against terrorists.
Q: Did any of the attacking forces penetrate inside Slaviansk?
A: Maybe. There was some sporadic gunfire in various parts of downtown Slaviansk, and there are rumors of diversionary units infiltrated inside the city. If they are there, they have so far achieved exactly nothing
Q: So what has this first day of the “major” anti-terrorist operation achieved exactly?
A: Nothing.
Q: What about the helicopters shot down?
A: Some rumors claim that they were shot down by portable air-defense missiles, other speak of anti-tank weapons. Either way, the net effect of these losses will be to make the Ukie pilots even more nervous and reluctant to fly combat missions.
Q: What were these helicopters doing anyway?
A: One was an armed transport Mi-8 while the other was an attack Mi-24. There is footage showing a Mi-24 using firing his rockets at an unknown target.
Q: What role is the Ukie military playing in this conflict?
A: A very minor one. As I wrote yesterday, the military is either unwilling (probably both) or unable to conduct a serious military operation. Whether any other force (Right Sector, National Guard, SBU, US mercenaries, etc.) can do much better is dubious at best, but we should assume that they can just as a working hypothesis, even if so far nothing corroborates it.
Q: What about Russia, should it intervene?
A: Absolutely not. For one thing, so far, the grand offensive just seized a few poorly defended checkpoints. IF tomorrow there is an attack beyond these checkpoints inside the city of Slaviansk itself and IF that attack is successful, then maybe it will be correct time to consider a military action. So far, all the signs are that the locals can beat back the attacker without direct Russian intervention and that would be much better for all parties involved.
Q: What about the massacre of civilians?
What massacre? Only one person died today, and that was outside the city near a checkpoint. There were no massacres so far. Nor was any artillery fire reported. Not a single confirmed tank shot either. It makes no sense whatsoever for the Russians to intervene under these conditions.
Q: Is Russia not sending a message of weakness?
Only to ignorant reporters. Military folks on all sides know that Russian can liberate the entire Donbass literally overnight very few, if any, losses. From a purely military point of view, the liberation of Crimea was a far more complex operation than a liberation of the Donbass would. The Kremlin does not need to make threats to be credible. It just needs to act if and when it decides to, and not in haste or to “look tough” (let the US/NATO engage in that kind of childish PR).
Q: So nothing of importance happened in the Ukraine?
Oh no, something very important did happen, but not in Slaviansk, but in Odessa. There have been some rather violent clashes between pro-Russian and pro-junta demonstrators in Odessa which could lead to the end of the relative peace so far in that city. If the lid blows off and the confrontation becomes overt then this could create an extremely volatile situation in Odessa which is truly vital to the junta in power. The city is a complex mix of ethnicities, closer in ethnic diversity to Crimea than to Donetsk.
I hope that this Q&A format is helpful to clarify this situation. Either way, please let me know.
I will be monitoring the situation as best I can and I will inform you of any important developments. I urge you all not to come to any conclusions based on rumors as today, again, we have seen a vast over-reaction of the media (on all sides) to what has been mostly a non-event: the junta’s mouse roared – that’s about it.
Kind regards to all,

1) The coup is nakedly taking all orders from the IMF and NATO. They have been ordered to fight for the East or lose a sizable chunk of IMF money.
2) The chess game continues with pawn-vs-pawn action as the IMF has ordered Kiev to match Russian popular uprisings with uprisings of their own.
Both US and Russia are in recession, and the conflict threatens to drag the global economy down. Look for Asian and European diplomatic initiatives to force the IMF to cede the East to Russia.
What about Odessa? That was some seriously organized mayhem. I watched it all day and while there was clearly violence on both sides, the pro-Russians had the worst of it and were burned out of the Adminsitrative building. Many killed in what most resembled a lynch mob. I watched it live from before the little tent city outside the building was torn apart until they dragged bodies out, took captives and beat them. Slava Unkraina they made one guy say while he was beaten. I think Odessa is going to stay Ukrainian, judging by how outnumbered the pro-Russians were.

ckGood analysis, The Saker.
It looks like today’s action in Slavyansk was nothing but another half-assed attempt to provoke a Russian military reaction. Also, maybe they did not think that helicopters can fall from the sky.
Seems the western string puppet players have not much means to move Russia. They can pull the strings on Yats’n’Turch (applause for the one who came up with that term ;) ), but they can’t directly move Russia. They try to, but oviously cannot, _push_ a string.
IMHO, short of dozens to hundreds of _civilians_ killed by military heavy weapons in a short timeframe, Russia won’t intervene overtly. Those who again and again call for Russia to go in seem to think of this as a Real Time Strategy video game, where you’re able to reload a previous save game when things did not work out.
One elderly civilian was already overrun. Still i think this is the best way to stop vehicles. When just enough (apparently) unarmed people / civilians surround them and _sit down_ in front of them, they can’t advance without being burned and lynched by the angry mob.

P.S. German media is still talking about ‘anti-terror operations’. There is a obvious dissent between the german media (firly in the hands of The Empire) and the German Realpolitik. Economic relations between countries are powerful. One thing we despise usually, the influence big corporations have on governments, can have positive effects sometimes. Seems Merkel was ‘called home’ to Washington today to bring her in line. Let’s see what happens and not what the media spouts.
Hey Saker, what a relief. For what it’s worth, yours is the only website I can go to in order to get a realistic feel for what is going on. Yes, indeed, it sounds like the Mouse did roar. Personally, I rue that scenario you outlined concerning the likely outcome of this sorry tragedy in Ukraine. The Russian Government will not intervene short of a major bloodbath that horrifies the world which is something I hate to think about. Let’s us pray that events, or rather, the communist thugs in Kiev fall flat on their ugly faces like… real soon. I am sorry but this whole things reeks of political ambition, insolent hubris, rank ignorance mixed with a bombastic, nihilistic impotent west-‘elite’ striving to make the impossible possible. I am sorry for the harshness but I had to vent.
According to comments on http://www.ustream.tv/channel/new-odessa, 30 burned alive in the trade building in Odessa.
Putin’s hand is going to be forced.
This is going beyond black comedy…..
When I see the antics of the Keiv/CIA/Nuland amateur hour bunch of Keysyone cops masquerading as a government, I swing between thinking “What a clusterfuck”, to “This is hilarious” to feeling abject sorrow for the Ukrainians and Russian caught up in this absolute disaster.
Saker, I agree completely with your Q&A.
Putin/Russia just has to sit tight and let the Kiev junta implode. There is no need for him to push this abortion over the edge of the cliff when they are obviously staggering over it by themselves.
But beware false flags, don’t blink and don’t get stampeded.
The hilarious part of it is that the US/IMF will pay him (through their loans to the Ukraine) for this US funded screwup. The gas bill has to be paid somehow. :) And if, as I suspect, the Ukraine splits the Russian leaning half will tell the IMF to send the bill to Keiv.
@Rob
Merkel doesn’t get her gold back from the US if she doesn’t play nice and toe the line. She does what she has to but looks increasingly out on a limb. But at some point, I think she will have to crack. My view is that the financial system as we know it is on the line. The question is whether the system crumbles or suffers a sudden collapse.
Remember the seven phases of a project…..
1. Wild Enthusiasm
2. Illusion of Progress
3. Panic
4. Disillusionment
5. Search for the guilty
6. Punishment of the
innocent
7. Praise and reward for the non-participants
My hunch is that we are somewhere around 3 or 4.
Do you think anyone from “Right Sector” can fly any aircraft?

In prostitute english language words have no meaning?
This will change everything :
38 people die after radicals set Trade Unions House on fire in Ukraine’s Odessa
I like this kind of summary. Like to see more of it.
You’re an idiot. Rusian no douby judging from your English
@Winston Smith
Read this info from RT:
“At the end of March thousands were rallying in Odessa, questioning the legitimacy of the coup-imposed government and demanding referendum on granting more freedoms to the regions.
Before the radical far-right group arrived in Odessa, rallies supporting the Kiev authorities numbered only several hundreds of people, while the pro-federalization rallies opposing Kiev gathered thousands.
Last week, local police chief, Petr Lutsuk, demanded the expulsion of recently-arrived radicals from the city.
“A large number of people had gathered in Kiev, and it was decided to send these groups to Odessa. We do not need them. They came and created a volatile situation,” he said. “
http://rt.com/news/156424-odessa-ukraine-clash-autonomy/
It is terrible what happened in Odessa, but still our guys showed a lot of strenght and it will radicalize them. The fascists came there to attack, our guys were there to defend, but now that they know what they’re up against (now they know that this is a life or death question!) they will arm themselves to the teeth and do everything to push the nazis out. I think Odessa will be extremely interesting and there is potential for a very important victory.
@Rob
Yes, I think Merkel is being blackmailed. She is a US puppet. The only reason people vote for her is because Germans are very risk-averse and German MSM has managed to create an image of Merkel where she represents “stability in uncertain times”. In Germany we have jokes about her that she is indecisive, she never acts, she waits everything out, she has no principles and changes her opinions to whatever is opportune at the moment.
I want to note that some “rebel-side” Ukrainian bloggers warned about May 2 attack being planned as early as April 30 – apparently at that point signed orders and general plan of operation already existed.
@JohnM
Germany will never get its gold back from US.
I am finding your knowledge and calm, wait-and-see approach very helpful, Saker. It is an excellent antidote to the wearing combination of infuriating disinformation and genuine worry for all the ordinary people whose lives are being so hideously affected by the lovely way my tax dollars are being spent.
But this Odessa Holocaust (yes, I’m going there; the hell with it!)… God, what do you call it when hundreds of police stand by and WATCH???
I guess it’s good I’m not Vladimir Vladimirovich, because I sure know what I’d be wanting to do right now. I wonder if any of the European leaders at this point feel the slightest twinge of guilt? I am sure ours don’t and I don’t think Merkel or Cameron do either — or Harper, for whatever he’s worth. And Sikorsky, Tusk, et. al. are probably gloating.
How do we rid ourselves of these monsters?
Q: What about the massacre of civilians?
50 dead in Odessa, burned alive
Love this format easy to follow do not stop doing it.
Dear The Saker,
I agree Odessa is the one to watch. I noticed in the last two big city attacks – Kharkov and Odessa – footballl fans have been used – Oligarch paid for no doubt!
Saker, I remember a while ago the Russians sent planes to Belarus – do you think they will send another signal from there as a warning to the Junta?
Rgds,

Hello all!
I was born and grew up in Odessa. My school mates, all in their 40s now, still live and work there. Odessa is a very Jewish city, it is a very Russian city, it is very Moldovan, Ukrainian, Greek, Italian city (Jackie Stallone, the mother of Sylvester Stallone, is from Odessa) but by no means it is just a Ukrainian city.
I’ve been in touch with some of my old friends and acquaintances in Odessa and I can tell you that 90% of the Kiev-dispatched thugs today were not from Odessa. The people of Odessa got caught off-guard, many of them are out of town today, enjoying a long weekend with friends. But they are being called back now and knowing the depth of anti-Maidan feelings in Odessa I would not say that it is a slam dunk conclusion that Odessa is going to stay within Ukraine. In fact, my knowledge of the mood of the silent majority makes me believe that the majority of town folk are very much anti-junta.
this footage is taken in austria – the tanks dont have signs to which country they belong.. looks like older hardware to me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id96Tb3yNIY
this video is a bit older, 9th april, austria also at the donau river – and no signs on the tanks.
look where the donau is to low int..

very suspicious i think.
i think putin knew exactly why he had the drills at ukie borders..

My impression is that the main purpose for the attacks from the Ukrainian “army” is to provoke the Russian army to engage inside East Ukraine so the propaganda machine will increase its attacks on Russia and Putin one can only guess: “Soviet,-Hitler- is back” “Biggest threat to world peace” “Russia about to start III world war” etc, etc. So to the Europeans get more paranoid and continue under NATO “protection” To me is like a theater to provoke Russia. Anyone can guess that Ukraine would not stand a chance against Russia. The Ukrainian experiment is also doomed to fail the master want at least to blame Russia for that too.
Saker
Very helpful analysis, thanks.
The sort of attacks that occurred today in Odessa I fear may be the direction the zionazis are now taking. They ship in their nazi thugs to outnumber and then attack local antimaydana people. It’s a logical development of the zionazi strategy to try and draw Russia inside the Ukraine and also turn the situation into one of civil war and mass terror. The zionazis keep ramping up their terrorism to those effects, I think.
@123abc
Now, now…. She might get SOME back if bends over and brings the Vaseline. And so far she seems to be a willing participant. The question will be what happens when somebody puts some sand in the Vaseline?
And, yes, very likely the German gold has been recast into kilo bars and is sitting in South East Asia with no intention of a round trip.
The western financial system is in the position of “We must all hang together or we will assuredly hang separately”. But physical gold and silver is the Achilles heel…. and the ability to deliver it.
“The people of Odessa got caught off-guard, many of them are out of town today, enjoying a long weekend with friends. But they are being called back now and knowing the depth of anti-Maidan feelings in Odessa I would not say that it is a slam dunk conclusion that Odessa is going to stay within Ukraine”. After today it’s not going to be safe to be a Right Sector thug with Kiev plates on one’s car in Odessa after dark, that’s for sure. They will only be safe when moving in large numbers or surrounded by lots of civilians, otherwise a lot of Right Sector bodies are going to start piling up in Odessa in reprisal for what happened today.
I am from Serbia and I was asking here two days ago Saker to specially follow the events in Odessa.
I AM IN SHOCK TONIGHT!!! 38 dead Russians in Odessa ??!
I hope this will cause Putin to send the army to Ukraine. Enough is enough!
I think Russians should not stop until Kiev is back in Russia! No more compromise and talks to the Nazis!
I am so angry I feel like I should personally go to Odessa and fight…

http://rt.com/news/156468-russia-ukraine-crisis-crackdown/
Saker, with things developing toward new levels of escalation is it possible that anti-government demonstrations could start up in other parts of Ukraine? How much real support does this government have? Many Ukrainians beyond the S and SE must feel threatened by the Banderista’s continued role as state security.
Who is Turchynov playing to with his statement on Friday’s clashes (in east) that “the insurgents suffered significant losses”?
This a few days earlier:
“I will be frank: Today, security forces are unable to quickly take the situation in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions under control,” Turchynov said. “The security bodies … are unable to carry out their duties of protecting citizens. They are helpless in those matters. Moreover, some of those units are either helping or co-operating with terrorist organizations.”
“That is why I am stressing our task is to stop the spread of the terrorist threat, first of all in the Kharkiv and Odesa regions,” Turchynov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.
Why Salviansk?
“There are no critical armaments factories, no military bases, no key transport routes and no geostrategic redoubts that might readily explain why tensions here have been,” wonders FT now.

IMPORTANT!
http://www.voicesevas.ru/news/yugo-vostok/voina-na-yugo-vostoke-onlain-02-05-2014–579.html
Are you sure we know nothing about military activities behind eyes of press?
For example, 100 NatGuard soldiers can comprised of former military reservists. Plus one or two snipers and 10-20 armed people defending town’s post are dead! Do you understand? Dead!
So stop soaping reader’s eyes writing the rubbish in this post.
You simply lost touch with reality not having the data to which you were accustomed in your better military days.
The only way out of this mess Russians stepped in is to ask/coerse Ukrainian real Forces to take actions against the Fascists thugs within 24 hours or the invasion will embrace also their units (they’ll be bombed) as both Right Sector and NatGuards formations which uses the same weapons and the same armory as Ukie Army.
i am shocked too for what happend in odessa today. i can’t say what i feel now.. rage, sadness – this is worst case – civil war, and i think these people will never forget each other what they did today.
dont’t rely on politicians, they’re all liars and puppets with strings attached to america and nobody cares about the ukraine or it’s people – except us..
it’s enough for me – all good forces in ukraine should unite and make an end of the fascist zionazi-whatever. i saw russian tanks every day and russian soldiers when i was a child, they always smiled at us and i was never scared or worried about them.
even in soviet times there was a “russian soul” and i believe this russian soul is raging seeing dead bodies with st. george ribbons lying dead in the floors of that union building.
i would do the same thing these people did today – greetings to the “grunt” – you don’t have enough ammunition to shoot all of us and then may god have mercy upon you.
this is worse than maydan and i am with all families who have lost someone and hope these thugs get what they deserve
saker, keep up your good work,
thank you all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o44swUNwwdU
Look at the “soldiers”. They are not young conscripts or fresh professionals “of Ukraine origin”.
They can answer you whatever you asked them for. They can attach Russian flags to APCs. You won’t know if there are mercenaries or from Right Sector (I suggest both).
Simply speaking they are seasoned soldiers.
Alas, civilians are so scared in such circumstances that they want/wish the soldiers were on their side (nation side) badly and wholeheartedly. That’s why they are so naive and that’s why they pay for the longing dearly. Like the ones who gave soldiers food and in return they served them AK-47 salvos (in another film).
That’s why I was pissed off reading your post where you downplayed effectiveness of Kiev forces to shed blood of innocent and naive civilians.
Anyway your work is priceless. Even in terms of “preprocessed news aggregator”.
Much appreciate your work. Thanks.

Addendum.
Especially look into 40 s to the 58 s of the long movie.
+++ Putin and most of the Russians want to
* keep the good economic, social and cultural relations with Ukraine
* not let NATO get an even stronger foothold in the Ukraine
+++ Obama and a (for a democracy way too powerful) tiny minority of Americans want to
* harm Russia; more generally: prevent any other nation, especially those not knuckling under zionist influence like the “West”, from gaining too much power because that would reduce zionist power
* hence take Ukraine away from Russia into the Western orbit as completely as possible
* ending up with a failed state in the Ukraine is the next best option – “we can’t take it, but they lost it nevertheless”
+++ EU governments, but few of the actual people living there in general want
* what their zionist overlors ask of them
* what big business wants
+++ Yats’n’Turch’s want?
Some say they want to drag Russia into the conflict. But then why are they being so cautious? 3 feeble attempts, 2 of them apparently after pressure from Washington. Despite all the recent disasters, they do have enough firepower to obliterate all the pro-Russian/pro-federalization demonstrators if they so decided. Russian boots would be in Ukraine in no time. OK, a restraining factor might be that Ukrainian soldiers are unwilling to shoot on their own citizens. But a government doesn’t need a lot of people to push a buttton to launch missiles from afar, and their staunchest opponents of the military upper echelons who could meaningfully get in their way will by now have resigned or been pushed out. If Yats’n’Turch wanted real violence using the army, they would be able to unleash some for sure. And there are always some right wingers waiting to do something like that (in the meantime, “roasting Colorado beetles in Odessa” must do) and which could be put into a uniform.
But no matter what Yats’n’Turch want, or rather: would dare to do, if not pushed, they are being exposed to very strong anti-Russian pressure from several sides, which they can’t ignore. For financial or for reasons of not getting driving out of self-assumed office:
* the US government and their CIA representatives in Kiev
* Right Sector (like) figures
* the IMF
The Right Sector guys get 1000-3000 dollars a month (link in German) from somewhere. I doubt it’s the putschists. It would probably be Washington, or some oligarch(s). If anyone knows, please enlighten us.
The IMF, as always, attaches conditions on their loans. According to the highly speculative zerohedge blog, the IMF made it explicitly clear that should Ukraine lose control of pro-Russian controlled cities the $17 billion bailout package would be lost too. Again, if anyone has a reliable confirmation, I’d like a link.
Important observations:
* Right Sector wants all of Ukraine (geographically speaking, if all the (pro-)Russians somehow were to die: great!)
* IMF wants Ukraine to stay together
* US wants all of Ukraine if it can get it
If those points are true, that would definitely speak against the “they want to drag Russia into the conflict”.
Caveat: Getting all of Ukraine seems impossible, and if the US thinks that is the case, they might in fact try to implement Plan B: Failed state, get Russia to respond so it can be labelled aggressor and the cold war and NATO resurrected

P.S. I don’t like Crazy Ivan’s style at attacking you at all. Although he is on-topic, it borders trollism, and after all these posts, I believe he’s trying to evoke aggressive reactions in the comments. I personally wouldn’t mind his comments were shown the basket until and unless he stops pestering. It’s detrimental to the otherwise factual and constructive comment section here.

Yeah, maybe, but on the other hand I am not some kind of porcelain doll whom a few sophomoric comments would do any damage to. As long as the amount of crap he posts here remains reasonable, I will let him make a fool of himself. But if he posts that crap too often I will toss him with no hesitation. Does he bug you a lot?

Considering that this complacent post was written after the Trade Union House was burned, “Crazy Ivan” is perfectly justified in saying “So stop soaping reader’s eyes writing the rubbish in this post. In my opinion many of his comments are poisoning the atmosphere. Basically telling everyone how stupid everyone is. To be honest, yeah, if the proportion of such comments starts increasing, I think I might lose interest wasting time trying to find the needles in the haystack. Thanks btw for your time putting up with those commenters that we don’t have to read. It’s luckily nowhere near zerohedge’s comment section, and I hope it doesn’t get there. But – as with your posts – I very much value quality over quantity. And especially recently, there’s no lack of relevant and respectful comments here, so…
Your comment rule #2 is “Comments must be respectful. …”
This certainly is not:
