With time and no re-supply of food and water, many ukronazis May consider laying their arms down, especially the majority who are not rabid. Besides protecting the civilians, Russia is protecting those soldiers who still have a chance to reconsider what they are doing. This is compassion and mercy. Russia is profoundly considerate.
Yes, Russia could have chosen the US Dresden, Hiroshima or Fallujah model of war: completely level cities with aerial bombardment, missiles and artillery, with no regard for civilian life, and then simply ‘roll in’ to machine gun whoever is left alive. But that is not what Russia is doing.
Russia regards the Ukrainians as a fraternal people in much the same, I imagine, as the Americans or Brits regard the Canadians and Australians. It’s already happening. There is a unit of 400 soldiers who have defected from the Ukrainian reserves in Kharkov. They are fighting alongside the Russians to liberate themselves from the Nazis. Sort of a Ukrainian Liberation Army, if you will. The whole operation is classified. There is some controversy about this such as whether to allow former SBU officers to join.
And 40 Ukie soldiers went over to the DNR early in the war.

I think it now shows that leaving Mariupol into Ukrainian hands, in 2014, was a mistake. It was much easier to take it at the time as there was almost no Ukrainian troops there at the time. Right now, large Russian forces and DNR forces are trying to eradicate nazi scum (much higher number compared to 2014) there, but I cannot see this happening without substantial loses of lives as those thugs are entrenched in civilian areas, hospitals, schools…
So it seems some form of Novorossiya will emerge. Exactly how much of present but fading Ukraine this will encompass remains to be seen. Will the new Donetsk Republic and Luhansk Republic be part of it? Will the far west around Lvov?
