This just in: the UNSC has adopted resolution “imposes an arms embargo against the Houthi rebels in Yemen and the allied forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh”. How crazy is that?!
An international coalition of thugs lead by the Saudis and al-Qaeda is conducing a large-scale aggression against Yemen and when the Jordanians propose to slap an arms embargo on the Houthis Russia simply abstains even though the Saudis are armed to their teeth by the USA? Worse, in a monumentally hypocritical statement the Russian UN Ambassador declared that “We insisted that the arms embargo needs to be comprehensive; it’s well known that Yemen is awash in weapons,” Churkin said. “The adopted resolution should not be used for further escalation of the armed conflict.” Does Churkin not know that the fully-armed Saudi military is leading an international aggression in this war?
Frankly, I am at loss for words. This Russian abstention reeks of hypocrisy and reminds me of the shameful Russian abstention on the anti-Libyan resolution in 2011. For the life of me I cannot imagine what the Russian rationale was for allowing the adoption of this resolution. Maybe it was to draw the Saudis further into a war they cannot win, but if that is the case, this is not, in my opinion, the morally or even politically appropriate thing to do, if only because of the damage suffered (yet again!) by the Russian diplomacy.
When Russia unilaterally refused to deliver the S-300s to Iran and in 2011 when Russia allowed the anti-Libyan resolution to pass, Medvedev was in power. Now, however, it is Vladimir Putin. This time he cannot argue that “the other guy did it”.
I find this latest development both very disappointing and rather frightening.
What do you think?
Cheers,
The Saker
Very disappointed in Mr. Putin. I thought he was a man of true justice. Yemen, like the other countries in the Middle East, is being slaughtered. When people within a country rebel against each in a civil war, it should be between those factions alone.
I agree that this is a very disappointing move by Russia. I think it has something to do with China. Not only does Russia have to respect China’s vote here, but it also has to consider implications for arguments that it may want to make about Ukraine sooner rather than later. with that war looking like it is on the verge of going hot again.
I believe that this plays on another level too. Putin and Russia are considered by a lot of western citizens to be a reasonable leader and a “balanced” country. This is not to be underestimated. People listened to the russian point of view in the the cases of syria and Iran. It was public dissaproval both in the states and uk. Which delayed the plan for an attack on assad. Msm would have fried russia if it vetoed the resolution, and for no gain for the RF at all. The west is in deep trouble, not because of Putin or Russian propaganda. But because of it’s own mistakes, and the continius disguise of elites interests as moral compass. West is loosing the trust of it’s own population. In a way cold war 2 was introduced not just to corner Russia but also to consolidate public support to the western governments/elites. This was succesful in a relatively low level. If Russia vetoed the resolution it would be depicted as the devil’s incarnation. Putin does not want that. He wants to be able to address western citizens not painted as an enemy, but as a sensible leader. This has it’s benefits, let’s say that tomorrow there is a western military intervention in ukraine. What do you think the western moral be? Suspecting they are on the wrong side of the conflict and all..
What I think, and what I’ve told you before, is that it is a mistake to see Putin and Russian state power through some kind of moral lens. Putin is of course good for Russia and the bulk of the Russian people. And Russian state power isn’t quite a bad as its western counterparts. But it is very similar in terms of moral standards. I hope you don’t still see that as a racist comment.
Russia is well aware that the Saudi and Zionist Anglo American are pig-headed for a massive Sunni-Shia war in the Arab region.
The main target of this resolution is to trap Iran as Iran has been accused of weaponizing the Houthis.
The next strategy of the Saudi Zionist alliance is trying to implicate Iran of supplying the Houthis with WMDs.
We can see their initial effort of accusing Iran of supplying Houthis with surface to air missile: http://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-wants-to-block-iran-from-arming-yemens-houthi-rebels-1428868461
They need a casus belli to attack Iran and Russia does not want to jeopardize the security of her nation.
That’s why I believe Russia is trying to distance herself in the Yemen conflict and portray herself in a neutral positition.
Russia and Iran have proposed a ceasefire and peace dialogue. Saudi rejects such proposals. There’s no other alternative for Russia except abstaining.
Perhaps the reason the Russians wimp out at crucial junctures is because they falsely believe that a pack of anti-Christ Ashkenazi self professed “Jews” are Biblical Israel, and Russia needs to kowtow to Israelis.
Russia is part of Christian Israel, but as long as they imagine that they are human beasts of burden for the Talmudists pretending to be real Israel, Russia is going to get hurt and cause others to be hurt, as per Libya and Yemen.

Telephone conversation with King of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud
At Saudi Arabia’s initiative, Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with King of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud.
April 20, 2015
17:30
The King of Saudi Arabia highly assessed Russia’s efforts to normalise the complicated situation in Yemen and expressed gratitude for Russia’s position during the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution No. 2216 on April 14.
Both leaders reaffirmed their readiness to deepen coordination between the two countries on the regional and international agendas. They expressed their mutual desire to continue building up mutually advantageous bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas.
Mr Putin invited the King of Saudi Arabia to visit Russia.
I believe Mr. Putin is well aware that the Saudi and it’s ally Israel are obstinate in waging an incessant war against Iran in the near future based on recent Saudi’s barbaric attack on Yemen.
That is the reason why Mr. Putin lift the ban on the delivery of S-300 surface-to-air missile systems to Iran as it serves as Tehran’s defensive purposes after Saudi invaded Yemen.
Mr. Putin’s attempt to solve the conflict in Yemen through diplomatic channel is very much appreciated. It is such a shame that the majority of the Muslim nations except few of them such as Algeria and Iran do not lift a finger in condemning Saudi’s atrocities towards Yemen.
God Most High in the Quran has instructed the Muslims to make peace between two factions of Muslims that fall to fighting:
“And if two parties of the believers quarrel, make peace between them; but if one of them acts wrongfully towards the other, fight that which acts wrongfully until it returns to Allah’s command; then if it returns, make peace between them with justice and act equitably; surely Allah loves those who act equitably.”
When I first read this nearly a week ago it came as a shock because between the lines I sensed an undercurrent of realization that an organization ostensibly founded to promote international dialog = peace has become irrelevant and vacuous in either event. What happens, when the knee-jerk reaction of the UN is to send invaders euphemistically called Peace-keepers, do we see peace breaking out all over the place? Alas, rape, pillage, plunder and oppression usually see an up-tick. It’s not about peace and I suspect, was never really intended that way. So why do its member nations continue to assign envoys, and play along with this expensive charade? That’s an interesting question, I think, and I first asked it a high school history class…which didn’t do anything good for my grade. I still do not have a good answer. My initial impression was that by abstention, Russia was making a very pointed comment about efficacy of the UN from the outset. I would not be surprised to see later on, that Russia abstains itself out of the UN altogether.
Russia’s vote in UNSC shows influence of a zionist talmudic jew 5th column
in Russia. This 5th column supports Israel and jewish controlled USA. Moreover,
Israel and Saudi have joined together in support of ISIL When events and votes
seem contradictory and confusing, one must always step back and determine
role of the international jew.

Fascinating article as today, 07/17/2015, we look at the genocide in Yemen. I stumbled upon your article as I have been searching in my mind – and on the internet – searching for answers to same questions you proposed. But, now we have the benefits of the Saudi cables through Wikileaks and their buying of “silence” through their petrodollars. Furthermore, we have recent news about Saudi’s purchasing significant arms from Russia subsequent to this “abstention.” What a cruel and disrty world we live in. But, if it is true that this was protection money paid to buy the Russia’s “abstention” wasn’t it clear that this abstention would have been against the vital national interests of Russia?
