We need your help. One of our moderator had to reduce his moderation time for medical reasons while another had to leave for personal reasons. Yet in the same time, the current crisis in the Ukraine has resulted in a major spike of visitors and, therefore, having moderators available 24/7 is really becoming crucial.
Specifically, we need moderators for the following time slots:
- Sunday 9am – 4pm EST (1400-2100 UTC): 1-2 mods
- Sunday-Monday 7pm – 9am EST (0000-1400 UTC): 2-3 mods
Let me just add that you don’t have to commit to a full time slot, even if you can do just a few hours in the time slots above would be a huge help.
I would also say that offering to moderate is as much a donation as any financial support, or even more. Our comments section is superb, but now it is cracking under the load of visitors.
Friends, this is both urgent and crucial, especially in the current situation, so we turn to you and ask for your help: if you have enjoyed the blog in the past, now you can “pay” us back by helping us in this difficult situation and it won’t cost you a single penny.

Moderators are truly an irreplaceable and vital resource for our blog.
Andrei, what do mods do?
Primarily they enforce these rules: /moderation-policy/
But we work in a special way: all the comments intercepted (for whatever reason) by the mods go into what WordPress very inelegantly called the “trash”. However, they are NOT destroyed there. Several times a day I go through these comments and I either “approve” of them to “permanently delete them”.
Why?
First, two brains are better than one.
Second, to be deleted a comment needs to be disapproved of by both at least one moderator any myself.
Third, instead of having to parse all the comments, I only parse those who are sent into “trash”.
Fourth, I don’t have to deal with moderation-related complaints (the chief of moderation, Herb, does that)
You could say that the moderators act like cops, they “arrest” a potentially offending comment and then I act as a judge at an arraignment hearing, which means that I either release the comment or I send it to “jail” (in this case, I permanently delete it).

You know how you guys posting comments can help the moderators? Think twice if it is really necessary to post long essays. Go straight to your point and don’t try to prove that you would be the better saker/Pepe etc.
