I friend just sent me this in an email and I thought that the best thing to do what to reply with a post. Here is what he wrote:
I’ve been wondering something for some time now regarding the “war” in Ukraine and Novorossiya. Occasionally I hear mutterings from the NAF about “going on the offensive” sometime soon (supposedly when a certain turning point has been reached or some unnamed goal accomplished). However, it has surprised me that there has as of yet been no small operations or maneuvers in greater Ukraine and specifically in Kiev itself. It would seem to me that a targeted covert campaign would be within the scope of the abilities of the NAF, no? Planned incidents and/or hit and run strikes within the city that would lessen the taste for war among the (it would appear) mostly indifferent people. Or is it thought that this might actually add some resolve to continue the fighting? History shows such actions to be the pattern, though the overall effectiveness of such tactics can be fairly questioned in most cases, I think. Curious as to your thoughts.
This is a very interesting question and a fairly complex one. In reality, there are two distinct issues here:
a) why is there no apparent resistance in the rest of the Ukraine?
b) where is the Novorussian counter-offensive?
The two issues are linked by a common denominoator, but they are qualitatively different. I suggest we take them one by one:
Why is there no apparent resistance in the rest of the Ukraine?
The first thing to admit here is that not all Ukrainians are opposed to the new junta. Well, by now probably most are, but not with the kind of determination which would make you join a protest movement or, even less so, an insurgency. For one thing, most Ukrainians have been raised under various degrees of russophobia, from the more-or-less nationalistic and russophobic Soviet Ukraine, to the rabidly nationalistic and russophobic Ukraine after 1991, to the insanely nationalistic and russophobic Ukraine after 2013, the official ideology and political climate in Banderastan is hysterically anti-Russian. So even those Ukies who might not be neo-Nazis of Bandera-groupies are not at all necessarily pro-Russian at all.
Second, there is an information blackout in the state and even “independent” media. We have all seen how even directors of major TV channels get beat up by Ukie nationalists if the don’t broadcast “comme il faut” programs. You can imagine what happens to smaller media outlets! So the population is told that the Ukie army is fighting, I kid you not, a Russian invasion! They are truly told that the Donbass if chock full of Russian Spetsnaz forces and tanks. I have even seen a report about 30 Russian T-90 MBTs attacking a Ukie defended village. So the level of propaganda and, frankly, zombification is simply unimaginable and while many Ukrainians might not like the junta in power, that does not mean that they would like a Russian invasion of the Ukraine.
Third, while this is practically not covered in the western media or blogosphere, most Ukrainian exiles agree that there is real terror in rump-Ukraine, especially in the cities of Kharkov, Kiev and Odessa: hundred of people have been kidnapped, disappeared, tortured, beaten, threatened or otherwise abused. The police and SBU dungeons are full of suspected “terrorists” “traitors” and “separatists”. People get threatening telephone calls, family members are threatened on the streets, at work, in school, etc. The moral heir to Stepan Bandera are very, very good at that kind of stuff and since the world media, human rights organizations and governments are more than happy to look away, the Nazi death-squads in Ukieland don’t have to be shy about their terror.
Fourth, and this is the painful part to admit. Just like in Novorussia, most Ukrainians prefer to just sit, wait and see what will happen. These types are almost exclusively interested in material goods and to them Russian or Ukrainian, Nazi or democratic, Orthodox or Uniat – does not matter. What matters are the contents of their fridge, the car they drive, the TV set in their dining room. If they were told to become Zimbabwean Anarchist Hare-Krishnas to get a better income they would. I don’t feel comfortable going into the “why” this is the case, but let’s just say that Ukrainian passivity is not a myth.
For all these reasons combined, there is no insurgency, no uprising, no sabotage in Banderastan. Or, if there is, it is minor. Most Ukrainians are confused, frightened, partially brain-washing and have to rely on rumors. All this will make a population very passive. From that point of view, Crimea was the ultimate counter-example and the Donbass in somewhere in the middle, hence all the difficulties faced by the Kremlin (and the Novorussian resistance) to somehow solve this problem.
As for the Novorussian forces, they simply don’t have the luxury to prepare sabotage operation deep behind enemy lines. Right now, what the Novorussian Resistance Forces are doing is “playing the fire brigade” – they are rushing from one point to another to “extinguish” various Ukie penetrations into Novorussian held territory. Let’s look at that a little closer:
Where is the Novorussian counter-offensive?
The rumors of a Novorussian counter-offensive have been circulating for weeks, and yet no counter-offensive is materializing? Why?
The key here is the numerical and technological superiority of the Ukie side. Let me try to explain.
For the Novorussian the equation is simple: the shorter the line of contact (or, if you want, “frontline”) with the enemy is, the better. The longer it is, the worse. Think of the scene in The Matrix were Neo is fighting a horde of Agents Smith: even though Neo is surrounded by hundreds or, possibly, thousands of Agents Smith , the only fight 1-5 at the same time simply because you can only fit so many Agents Smith into the immediate perimeter around Neo. Real warfare is not that simple, of course, but the underlying idea is the same and this is one of the reasons Strelkov gave up Slaviansk.
The second thing which a lot of readers ask is: excuse me, but if the Ukies are losing, why are they constantly advancing? There is no contradiction here. What the Resistance does is regularly retreat to let the Ukies enter into Resistance territory which they turns into a pocket or “cauldron” for them. At which point the Ukies either die or retreat. Please keep in mind that in most cases the Ukie advance is reported, but the subsequent retreat is not. Finally, the western media feeds the public “approximate” maps which are, in reality, simply false. This is one taken today from the BBC website:
Compare that with with this one of the same period:
The contrast could not have been bigger. The western presstitutes make two crucial mistakes: first they assume that if unit X moved from point A to point B that means that point A still remains in friendly hands. This is not so. Most of the time as soon as unit X moves from point A to point B, the other side retakes A and unit X is surrounded. Second, the presstitutes also think that all the Russian or Novorussia info is “propaganda” whereas what comes out of western sources is reliable. Hence, you get maps like the one above: worse than useless – actually misleading.
By the way, there is a guy on YouTube called Dima Svets who makes pretty good commented reviews of combat maps (like this one). He speaks in Russian, but if you want to just get a feel for what the real maps looks like he is a good resource.
As I said above, most of what the Novorussians are doing right now is “playing the fire brigade”: the Ukies attack on all fronts, as soon as they begin to punch through the Novorussian positions, the central command sends in reinforcements who stop the advance, and try envelop the Ukie force before it can move back. The reason why this basic maneuver works is twofold: the distances are very short and the Novorussians are vastly superior on a tactical level.
But a counter-offensive is en entirely different business. For one thing you need to concentrate your forces at the point you want to achieve a breakthrough. Furthermore, you probably want to fake an attack elsewhere, which also requires more forces. How could the Novorussians concentrate their forces without risking a Ukie breakthrough in their rear?
Also, assuming it is successful, a Novorussian counter-attack would imply a lengthening of the line of contact and an increase in the risk of being enveloped and surrounded. True, the Ukies suffer the disadvantage of having a huge territory in their rear so it is hard for them to predict where to place their reserves, but they have enough motorized and mechanized units to move in fast, and they also have artillery and airpower. So for the Novorussian forces a breakthrough in the depth of the Ukie territory could become very very dangerous.
The two sides have not fought themselves into a standstill yet, but they did fight themselves into a draw in which neither side can do very much. The size of the Resistance-controlled territory has been reduced to a level which is manageable for the Resistance and too tough to crack for the Ukies. Now it becomes a willpower game.
Unless some external factor freezes the conflict “as is”, both sides will continue to move back and forth with minor tactical successes until finally one side reaches its breaking point. At that point, the breaking side will not gradually retreat, but will rapidly collapse. I am at this point unable to guess which side is closer to that breaking point. The Ukies have been butchered in absolutely fantastic numbers by the Resistance, but they keep throwing more and more men, equipment and units into the battle, over and over and over again. I don’t have a way to gauge how long the regime can keep doing that. I know that there is a growing movement of “mothers of servicemen” who are protesting and that especially in the western Ukraine there is a movement to say “we don’t want to die fighting the Russians over the Donbass”. Corpses of dead Ukie serviceman are brought literally by the trainload but the junta does not have the money to pay for the refrigeration, nevermind a decent burial. So families are forced to pay to get their loved one, often they are told to transport the corpse in any way they want, they have to pay for the refrigerations, they have to pay for a new uniform in which to bury the solider, and they have to pay for the funeral. Can you imagine the horror and despair of these families? And the number of thus affected families is going through the roof, especially in the western Ukraine because the junta believes that these western Ukrainians are less likely to desert or switch side.
I think that it is important for us not to solely focus on the horror of the Novorussian civilians being massacred by the Ukie forces, but also on the horror of Ukie forcibly conscripted (up to age 60! And since the begging of the year already 3 partial mobilizations have been ordered and executed by the junta) and sent as cannon-fodder to be killed by the Resistance forces.
If Novorussia can hold another couple of week or so, then the tide will definitely turn against the junta. Right now there is nobody to negotiate with, and nothing to negotiate about. But as Novorussian politician Oleg Tsarev recently said, as soon as the junta forces feel their first major defeat the Europeans will suddenly demand all sorts of negotiations and then, maybe, will it become possible to negotiate something. But until the Novorussian forces convincingly show that they cannot be crushed (and so far they have not shown that), the junta and it US bosses will never negotiate for real. They might pretend, like they did many times, but not in earnest. As long as the USA and the junta can have to hope of winning purely militarily, by crushing the Resistance, they will never negotiate.
The Resistance looks pretty good right now. What they need now a a solid and undeniable success. Until then, the situation will remain frozen.
The Saker
PS: I am under huge time pressure again, so I wrote the above “as is”. I might proofread and correct it tomorrow. But today I really cannot. Sorry.
Whatever the circumstances Putin cannot allow a catastrophic collapse of Novorussia. This would have a devastating effect on Russian leadership globally, the BRICS, SCO, Syria and Iran. The world is watching. Russia must create the space for a global revolt against the empire!
On the second map, could someone translate the meaning of the different symbols that appear on the bottom right… Especially the circle with the x in it and the arrow with the curved bottom ?
Thank you.
Cauldron 1.0 was undeniable success. They probably need much more than that. They need to weaken Ukies to the point that another mobilization is needed (and there are probably many, who were still not recruited under third mobilization). The breaking point for the junta will be multiple defeats and nationwide resistance to further mobilization.
This is off but on a humorous note. Created this a while back, it illustrates US foreign policy re Russia. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BnUwoE8CAAA-Rge.png

A very timely post. According to public information, the NAF is currently on a multi-front offensive in the north/south – Severodonetsk, Novoazov.

All support to the Soviets!
Dear Saker,
Thank you for your assessment. The arrival of the salvation convoy coincided with ria novosti publishing a note on yats whining that the ukrs cannot make it through winter without an extra Russian gas inflow of 5b m3. Certainly the ukr is under the spell of full blown self-deception and control from usaians, but this request for help indicates that the ukrs are finally waking up to discover that though all the pledges in the contrary sense, eu will not supply them with the gas they badly need.
On the other hand, a contraoffensive as you put it seems to be courting the risk of being outnumbered and crushed. So it very much seems that with the present distribution of forces and though we do not know how much the ukrs have stockpiled and in conditioned to be used (according to Colonel Cassad is obsolete stuff) and having today the finnish pm declared that the eu is not entitled to suminister war material, what Donbass can do is keep the front short and lure the ukrs to be engaged, divided into islands and finished.
Rather than going for mariupol, is letting them come close and sending small teams for scouting behind the lines.
And making their lines of communication a living hell.
With the near arrival of winter, the ukrs getting desperate with the economic collapse and the massive burial of their kin, they will wake in dismay out of their zombie and lamentable states.
What a waste of life is the lesson that appears the universe to be offering them for a lecture.
In Argentina, in the war with the brits for the Falkland/Malvinas, the presstitute sold night and day that the brits were being defeated. Then, suddenly, the lie could not be contained, the usaians showed to the argie fascist military that they were for the brits, and snap, everything collapsed in a single day ot two.
Then it may be the time for Donbass to run for mariupol.
Very much seems that Russia and Donbass is playing the minimalistic strategy, which so far appears to have been fruitful.
Thank you dearly for your excellent work.
Kind regards from distant

Global revolt against the empire: It is beginning among the young all over the world with outbreaks of active resistance and rapid politicization in Ferguson, Europe, Chile, Spain–even among the young Muslims of Europe who see Daash as winners against the empire. The young people are unemployed in larger numbers and poorer than their parents and they want to create a better world. Maybe they are naive and mistaken as to how to do it but the desire is there. To underestimate this force would be a mistake. Gaza and Ukraine are the lynchpins. There was a world wide youth revolt in the 1960’s and it could happen again.
On August 26th there will be some kind of talks in Minsk. There was a rumor that the Kremlin fired Strelkov in order to make a deal with Kiev and Washington. The thinking is that Strelkov wouldn’t have laid down arms in case of a deal, but that his replacements will.
The problem is that Washington doesn’t want a deal. I’m guessing that it’s satisfied with what’s going on right now for divide and rule reasons.
It seems that in the last few days Putin increased his support for the Novorossian rebels. The situation in Lugansk and Donetsk improved as a result. And today we even heard of fighting on the coast! Presumably Putin increased his support in order to strengthen his position at the upcoming talks in Minsk. That means that he’s not planning to simply give up the Donbass at those talks. If the rebels lay down arms, he wants something in return. And he thinks that the better the rebels are doing, the more Russia will get at the negotiating table.
But it seems unlikely to me that Washington’s Euro and Kiev puppets will offer anything at those talks. They’re not going to recognize the Crimea as part of Russia, they’re not going to guarantee a neutral (i.e. non-NATO and non-EU) status for the Ukraine and they’re not going to consent to the de facto independence of the Donbass.
So the talks will not produce an agreement and the war will continue. Both NATO and Russia will keep increasing their support for their proxies. More and more civilians will die or flee the region. I really don’t see an end to this war.
The Ukraine could collapse economically, yes. But why would its US owners let it collapse militarily?
@ Saker,
Q: But until the Novorussian forces convincingly show that they cannot be crushed (and so far they have not shown that)…
R: What makes you say/conclude that?
A full, standing KFK army has ‘liberated’ Ilovaysk by 25% [link to Colonel Assad – 7 trackers].
This means the ‘resistance’ has already won. The only thing they have to do is to inflict more losses, destroy and capture more armor and start a serious guerrilla warfare behind enemy lines. Destroy convoys, blow up bridges, trains, reinforcements, ammo depots, etc.
The KFK can’t and won’t win this war. Look at the Palestinians, they’ve been doing this for over 6 decades.
There was an item on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation yesterday that was a rebroadcast from the BBC World Service. It had someone from their Ukrainian service claiming all kinds of evidence for the separatists shooting down MH17 based on “intercepts”. As it went on the broadcast became more and more farcical – a discussion between a drunken rebel and a woman about having mistaken a civilian plane for a military one. The BBC has lost me.
Looking for videos/photos of the aid convoy being unloaded in Luhansk… Anyone have any links?
Russia is demanding to know about MH17:
http://en.ria.ru/world/20140823/192273535/Russia-Wants-Regular-Transparent-Reports-on-MH17-Crash.html
My view is that Ukraine is a failed state with a destroyed economy which will be Balkanized as was done by Yugoslavia by the institutions of NATO, EU, US, oligarchs, bankers (IMF/world bank). Sadly, many Ukrainians are drinking the cool aid provided by the Junta. The latest is that “winning” the war will save the Ukraine economy as described by Yats:
“People who lose a job due to the reforms carried out by the government will be sent to restore objects in the East of the country. Such a solution of the employment problem was proposed during a meeting with journalists by the prime-minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who was appointed by the Verkhovnaya Rada.
“The freed-up people we will send to the east,” – announced he and one of the journalists asked, if this will be applicable to the officials who lost their positions, the prime minister replied: “Everyone. Everyone who wants to work and earn”.
Yats is repeating the discredited myth that “War Is Good for Business” http://www.globalresearch.ca/debunking-the-economic-myth-that-war-is-good-for-business/5381405
This was originally debunked by 9th-century French economic journalist Frederic Bastiat, although most Nobel Prize winning economists choose to believe the myth:

please understand there are RAIDS happenning in the North and the South behind Ukie lines.. many weapons are being captured and brought to the militia.. rocket launhers and ammo and self propelled artillery as well as mortars in just the last week. there is a big raid going on now to the north of lugansk from the border toward lichicansk shelf creating a mess for the ukies in there rear. the last 3 weeks has seen a huge increase in artillery, armour and ammo and a increase in troops from the southern cauldron. remember the 72,79,24 all eliminated along with now the 30,80,51,17 and the volunteer bat getting it at muissisk-ilovasik. they have gained from saur-grave all the way to amvroseivka in the south and raiding to uspenka and bombing with rockets all the way to the mariuple road(H20)— comapre the battle map of 8-1-14 with todays and you will see a vast gain. thanks for the tools UKIES !!
How did the rebel fighters acquire superior combat skills? Weren’t they from the same military background as the government forces? If immigrant Russians, don’t the two countries follow similar military systems?
Saker
Nice piece of writing. Even a person with zero knowledge on the subjects should be able understand what you are explaining.
From the letter:
“However, it has surprised me that there has as of yet been no small operations or maneuvers in greater Ukraine and specifically in Kiev itself.”
Sounds like he was talking about special forces and sabotage ops. There have been some of these reported occasionally. There is probably a lot more of these sorts of ops than is reported, though. The reason is secrecy is necessary for them to work and the more one talks about the ops, the more the other side knows about how they are done and can take more effective steps to prevent future ops. So it’s best to say as little as possible about these.

I read early this morning that Mariupol and the coast is in play with some kind of activity going on. And that is not the first time a small report about action in/around/near Mariupol has been leaked. Some units are operating in the South.
Mariupol is the natural place for the counter offensive because the militia will not get trapped and lines of logistics are by sea. The Russian navy and special forces can protect them easily.

Clausewitz established that most attacks diminish in strength the longer they continue, whereupon a critical point is eventually reached at which the power of the attack is superseded by the strength of the defence.

Is there any place on earth that’s suffered more than Ukraine and Novorussia over the last 100 years? The pictures of children dancing around a burning effigy of Putin demonstrate a profoundly traumatized and distressed population. Psychologically and spiritually it may be worse than Gaza because unlike Palestinians most Ukrainians don’t know, or resfuse to admit, the cause of their misery.
The problem for Ukrainians is the same as it is for everyone else: the vast majority of people are too terrified to confront organized crimminals.
If we find the answer in Ukraine then we find it for the whole world. My only conclusion thus far is we need a champion. So far Putin and Nasrallah alone fit the bill.
Excellent analysis, first draft or not. Thank you.
From an outside perspective, Novorussia has the high moral ground since a) it was attacked first by the Kiev war criminals and b) it is not attacking Kiev or other parts outside Novorussia through covert operations.
Crimea is gone. Novorussia will go. What’s left?
One assumption and an important question:
I assume that Kiev sent the best troops they had in to battle. Since they’ve had such serious losses, I suspect the replacements will be even less effective.
Here’s a very specific question. The corporate media is selling the story that Russia fired artillery into Ukraine and otherwise engaged in military action. Is there any way to verify this?
If they did, there might be some evidence but Fogh and Breedlove don’t bother to offer any. It’s just more of the same b.s.
The Russian Ministry statement is a fully satisfactory rationale, btw.
Russia on Unilateral Start of Humanitarian Aid
Saker, what sources do you have for the “disappearances” going on in Kiev and other areas which are not aligned with Novorussiya? Who is documenting this repression of Ukrainian citizens? Have your informants communicated this to the EU or any other international body, intergovernmental or non-governmental, eg Amnesty International? If so, what response did they receive?
I am not disputing your information. I would like to know more about what the Kiev Junta is doing, not just on the front lines, but with regard to their “own” populace. As you will readily appreciate this is not easy to come by in the EU media.
At the moment, Rump Ukraine is basically being propped up by the willingness of the US to purchase their worthless currency. For how long is the country going to be able to keep afloat, just in terms of making payroll? How can they afford the present conflict? At what point will it be necessary to call on a significant overt or covert commitment of men/materiel from NATO/US? Or is the assumption that they can handle it themselves?
i have yet to see any evidence of the massive support the media is telling us the FR has supplied to Novorrussiya, either. So is this a war of attrition, with both sides running themselves into the ground, at which point the vultures will swoop on the dessicated carcase? Because that is what it looks like.
The NY Times suggested in an article that the departure of Strelkov and Borodai may be a preparation for negotiations – as Kiev doesn’t want to negotiate with rebel leaders with the Russian nationality. Does anyone have any comment?
The NY Times has with its most recent articles a map that is quite similar to the BBC map. Under the map they have written that the map was composed after consulting both sides. Makes me wonder who they consulted on the rebel side and what he said.
While I agree with your basic analysis, Saker, one of the problems with shortening the front line is that it also concentrates the Junta’s artillery, which is not subject to the same considerations of contact as the front line troops as it can be deployed in depth, with long range artillery far behind the front line howitzers and shooting over them, bringing a greater concentration of Junta firepower onto a given kilometre of front.
Lacking manpower and heavy artillery or air power, the self-defence forces are essentially fighting a fluid hit-and-run type of warfare much like the NLF did in Vietnam, rather than a trying to hold territory behind a solid front line in WW I or WW II style. The aim is to inflict significant losses on the enemy while minimizing your own losses by not presenting a fixed target for their superior weaponry.
My concern is that winter is coming, fast, and the leaves will be falling off the trees in a month or so, making it much more difficulty for the resistance to ambush or retreat from the Junta’s superior firepower, and in particular, airpower. One of the things that enabled the NLF to successfully fight the overwhelming US forces was the heavily vegetated terrain in the mountainous and continually covered tropical forest of Vietnam.
The Novorossian resistance with be very exposed to air attack in the open and soon-to-be coverless steppe lands. The Germans and Russians fought over this same area for several winters in 1941-1943, of course, but they both had air forces and were roughly evenly matched, with large reserves of manpower.
Winter is going to be a big problem for Novorossia, with it’s devastated cities lacking heat and power.
Speaking of ‘insanely nationalistic’ Ukrainians:
Do you know that Ukrainian language came from planet Venus? – ENG SUBS – YouTube
Is this video for real or a parody? Is this the garbage that children are being taught in school?
Here’s a partial answer to my question on the reality of Russian artillery support for the aid convoy. Of course, Fogh Rasmussen didn’t say when and where the artillery fire took place. Clever guy.
Right, they did so without offering any evidence although there’s video out there of the convoy. The political and military heads of NATO told the Post about Russia firing across the border but, guess what, no pictures at 11.
Here’s an interesting line from the Russia escalates tensions with aid convoy, reported firing of artillery inside Ukraine Russia escalates tensions with aid convoy, reported firing of artillery inside Ukraine, Washington Post, 8/22
“For Ukrainian officials, a potential military response ultimately depends on whether the Russian convoy tries to do anything more than distribute aid.” Washington Post, 8/22.
Shameless contradiction. If a Ukraine military response is contingent on a military act by Russia, may the Kiev government failed to listen to the NATO Secretary General on the Russian military acts (from the same link):
“Russian artillery support — both cross-border and from within Ukraine — is being employed against the Ukrainian armed forces.” NATO Secretary General Fogh Rasmussen
So this is much more than a convoy to “distribute aid” according to NATO but the assumption in the Ukraine official statement to the Post is that the has not been “anything more” than an aid mission.
These people can’t even keep the lies consistent in a single article.
Saker, here’s another question for you.
I know that throughout Ukraine the Communist Party gets a substantial minority of the vote. I recall that even in Lviv it reached nearly 10% before the putsch.
I believe from years of watching that it could not get this vote on sentiment and nostalgia alone; that it must require strong grass roots organization and independent communications channels to sustain.
We have seen that the Putchist government and the far right parties have singled out the Communists for violent repression and that the CPU has called on its units to “go underground” and learn to operate under illegal conditions.
Looking at this from the outside, coming from an anti-Communist tradition but now finding yourself standing alongside them in the Donbas and in defense of Russia, what can you see about what role they might play in the rest of Ukraine – as organizers of resistance or eventually as organizers of an uprising?
[You might want to answer privately if you feel this is too sensitive to post, or post without an answer and see what your readers say.]
Perhaps this would be a good question for “Colonel Cassad”. Or do you know what his thinking is on the matter?
I would recommend Gleb’s blog today. An interview with a Ukie General who sounds like a real human being.
General Ruban
You read him and sense that he would be ideal to put in charge of Kiev when the junta is hung from a gallows.
Even if the junta and its owners wanted to end the war with a deal, they would have to precede that with an appropriate media campaign at home. You can’t go straight from “we’re heroically struggling against the devil and winning” to “we’ve agreed to the entry of Russian peacekeepers into the Donbass.” The TV audience would not understand. And I haven’t seen any signs of a change of tone in Ukromedia. Which is one more reason to think that the talks in Minsk will be fruitless.
my prayers for the people of the militia, who are fighting for all of us!
Thank you, Saker. What you’re saying really makes a lot of sense. But what also struck me, hard, was that when you were talking about the strange passivity of the Ukrainian people, you could just as well have been describing the typical American! Just the other day a friend asked me if I’d ever watched — really watched — anybody watching teevee. And of course everyone here knows exactly what he was talking about: that strangely inert place you get to where, even if the show really isn’t that good, you sit and watch it anyhow. That’s basically a hypnotic state, a light trance — and perfect for propagandizing, starting at a very early age. Add in what is known about neuronal plasticity, the growth or shrinkage of nerve endings in various pathways of the brain according to how much they are used (yes, habits are actual physical phenomena — isn’t that wild? — but they can also be changed; it just takes a lot of time and effort). In any case, the point is, we’ve all become conditioned, to one extent or another, by sitting there as passive receptors for… shopping, violence, crudity, you name it. Add in that we’ve always been a fairly materialistic culture, and that despite our current straitened circumstances, we still are. And the average Ukrainian, sadly enough, sees this essential emptiness and passivity as something to emulate. Hopefully they’ll wake up soon, and we will too.

re: Tribute to Merkel.
The main EU supporter of the neonazis is visiting Kiev: wouldn’t it be fitting if the heroic psychopaths (which are especially heroic when they slaughter unarmed civilians) gave recognition to the German government for its unwavering and determined political and financial support? They could for example create a new battalion “Merkel Heldenstandarte” (Merkel heroic flag) which would be used in definitely heroic situations, like burning unarmed civilians alive, using phosphorus, Grads and heavy missiles on cities and destroying basic infrastructures of villages and cities. Wouldn’t that be a fitting tribute?

“…Fourth, and this is the painful part to admit. …”
You will find this ‘passivity’ in many other countries, especially of the west. Conditioned. Learned helplessness. One of the central threads in the media/psyops. It’s a feature. Last post.
I haven’t had internet access for a day and I would like to make a few quick observations.
I’ve missed knowing what’s happening in New Russia and not being able to read Saker’s and commentators’ analyses here.
Not because I want to be entertained or to be an armchair general. And not because I think “everything” depends upon Putin or Novorussia.
IMO, each of us, in our own country, has to make a decision about the stand or action we will take. The struggle in Novorussia is very, very important but it would be a sad mistake, I think, for us to sit back and let them do all the fighting for us.
In that context, though, it’s most helpful to know how all the battles are going and thus, big thanks to Saker, Mindfriedo, Gleb, and all the others.
Anon. at 21:20: I think Anon. at 22:31 gave you the answer. Believe big circle with x is an artillery strike, small circle with x is ags grenade strike. Will try to give you the link here as well:

Nora:
I value your opinion. It bothers me, though, when you use “we” when, I think you mean, the US govt.
As far as I know, neither you nor I, are creating havoc in Ukraine. I know that, in the past, it was customary to say, “our army”, etc.
That’s too close and an incorrect identification, I think.
I’m not trying to sidestep whatever responsibility I have as a citizen of the US. But there are many things “my” govt. has done which I’ve really struggled against.
Regarding MH 17, don’t rely on Malaysia. From today’s Sunday paper:
TIME TO MOVE ON

Told ya.
“However, it has surprised me that there has as of yet been no small operations or maneuvers in greater Ukraine and specifically in Kiev itself.”
The neocon line in the media war – which is where the neocons have the biggest advantage – is that the rebels are terrorists.
So…
not a good idea
This is anti-Narod as such. And it offered Narod a deadly challenge. In comparison, Ukrainian Nazis are simply pawns at the hands of the global anti-Narod fading into the background. If there were not a powerful group of traitors in Moscow at the very top, we would already be outside of Kiev. Of course, we will still be there. Narod will be there. Russians will be there. But there is the following question: what about the State? Which path will it choose? Is it with Narod or its antithesis? This battle is more frightening than any military initiative. By changing the ratio ever so slightly at the surface, at the periphery, we end up with colossal results. As soon as the traitors slightly change the reports as to what is really going in in Novorossia, they create disinformation, increase uncertainty, and leave determination behind. Everything works: false arguments, selective usage of facts, lies—here the anti-Narod bureaucracy is a master.
I did not anticipate that the war against the sixth column at the top would be so bloody and difficult, and that its counter-offensive would be so cruel. After all, losing thousands of citizens in Novorossia, murders of women and children—these are simply the consequences of the actions carried out by the sixth column in Russia, which has been attempting to push the State onto its side. Its thesis—pull Strelkov out, begin negotiations, compromise with the junta—else its stolen wealth in the billions, real estate abroad, families taken there long ago, omnipotence in Russia—will suffer. After all, it is anti-Narod that the elite comprises almost fully. There is only one ambassador for Narod. But he is restrained by the State’s machine of death.
As in 1612 during the Times of Troubles, Narod must take its own initiative. It cannot solely depend on the State. The latter is partly paralyzed by the sixth column. Even Putin cannot bear all of the responsibility. Historic Being is our cause—the cause of the Russians. Russians today are Novorossia, on the map and in the heart, on the machine gun and on the social-networking avatar. What a difficult moment…I do not recall another one of this caliber in my life…But it is also joyous! An awakened Russian defending the Russian World—this is true delight. We are armed Russians, what a delight!

For following the military situation in Novorossia, I strongly recommend this site: http://militarymaps.info/
The map there is scalable, it shows nearly current situation on the ground and is very frequently updated, therefore it allows you to actually follow the development “as it happens”. And it seems to provide very reliable information.
For example, it showed nearly “live” development of the path of the humanitarian conwoy, and right now you can follow there e.g. the fast openning of the Lugansk “vise”, or the fights in the vicinity of Ilovaisk, Doneck, or Saur-Mogilla. It almost seems to be too good to be true, but I really found the information there very reliable. Worth to give it a try.
Regarding the territorial sovereignty of Ukraine, I have these comments posted by me and others:
Ukraine borders with seven countries: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Russia, and Belarus. The total stretch of the Ukrainian border consists of 6,992.98 km (4,345.24 mi).
In reality Ukraine does not have real established and ratified borders with Russia, Belarus, and Moldova (republics of the former Soviet Union). The borders with other countries were “inherited” ; from the Soviet border patrol service which was recreated into the Ukrainian after the fall of the Soviet Union.
PUTIN can legally take eastern Ukraine if he wants to .
There is no territorial integrity, the eastern borders of Ukraine have not been internationally ratified by an Internationally recognised agency such as the UN.
Russia could claim its Russian territory stops at and includes Kiev if they wish to.
The Eastern border of Ukraine has not been ratified by any official body, it may as well end at the Dnepr.
Furthermore, the big mistake of not ratifying the eastern border with the UN will be a major fault-line Russia would happily exploit, and rightly so.
The Ukraine failed to ratify their official borders with Russia at the UN, LOL!
that made my day to hear…
Their borders could stop just before Kiev. Russia should claim back their territory, they have a say in this.
Is there any truth to the rumour that Strelkov had moved to Ferguson, MO after resigning his position in Novorossia? ;)

Thanks for this excellent overview on some of the same questions many are pondering.
If as you said
“If Novorussia can hold another couple of week or so, then the tide will definitely turn against the junta. Right now there is nobody to negotiate with, and nothing to negotiate about. “

So why the August 26 meeting in Minsk?
Germany supports Minsk talks. “President Poroshenko wants to achieve a peaceful settlement in the east (of Ukraine)”, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel
OR Is it for
Porky to beg Mr. Putin for an early Christmas gift like this, please overlook our unpaid past due invoices we do need some gas:
Kiev Says Ukraine Needs 5 Bln Cubic Meters of Russian Gas for Winter
“ “ MOSCOW, August 22 (RIA Novosti) – Ukraine needs to purchase additional five billion cubic meters of gas from Russia for the forthcoming winter season, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Friday.
“Can Ukraine now survive without Russian gas? No, it can’t. How much Russian gas do we need to buy? About 5 billion cubic meters,” he said in an interview with Ukrainian TV channels.
He said that three-party gas talks, involving Ukraine, Russia and the European Union, are scheduled to take place next month.
“I hope there will be some final stage to these talks,” he said.
He added that Kiev had reserved $3.1 billion for gas purchases in the National Bank of Ukraine.
On June 16, Russian gas giant Gazprom introduced a prepayment system for gas deliveries to Ukraine amid a dispute with Kiev over its $4.5 billion gas debt. The European Commission and Gazprom anticipate problems in winter, when Kiev is likely to run out of its own gas reserves. “”
more, read the rest of it
~ ~ ~ ~
Whatever happened to the big bragging of reverse-flow of gas supplies from EU through Slovakia?
How does anyone meet with, negotiate with, someone known and proven time and again to be untrustworthy?
Well Mr. Saker, in about 10 days Ukies’ complacency walks. Ukraine’s hryvnia (UAH) is in free fall. Closed on Friday @ 13.5. Looks like the IMF will need to rescue the banks on the backs of depositors. You have a choice, Cyprus or Greek style.

“Aoife said…
Saker, what sources do you have for the “disappearances” going on in Kiev and other areas which are not aligned with Novorussiya? Who is documenting this repression of Ukrainian citizens? Have your informants communicated this to the EU or any other international body, intergovernmental or non-governmental, eg Amnesty International? If so, what response did they receive?…….”
Your question was to The Saker, but here’s what I’ve read:

NotSoFast,
Oh dear. Just reading your thoughts about a tribute to Angela Dearest makes me realize I’ve now developed the same visceral gag response to her that I’ve had to Tony Bliar since the run-up to the Iraq War. (Can’t stand to even see his face during the intro to CrossTalk — I start to gag, throw up and scream at the same time. I think one more look at her sour puss and I’ll be doing the same thing.)
WestTX,
Thank you. I’m getting a lot out of your comments too, and I think you’re every bit as frustrated with TPTB here as I am. But I use “we” for a couple of reasons and yes, it bothers me too every time I do. However, I remember very well when we used “we” when we were proud of things “we” did — and I figure if it’s okay to use it when we were on the right side of things (or at least believed we were), it’s more important than ever to use it now when we clearly know better. Because, although you and I, and I’m guessing most people here are horrified and ashamed of the US contribution to worldwide strife, it kind of stops there: we’re still funding it with our tax dollars and not driving the bums who voted for it out of office or doing anything else, really, to stop it or even try to figure out how we could. So yes, it sticks in my craw and I’m hoping it’ll stick in enough other craws that maybe we, here, can take some time to figure out what exactly we can do to stop these horrors. After all, Ferguson shows we’re more comfortable than ever doing it to anyone considered “other” — and AGS’ story shows it doesn’t take more than a request to speak w/the police about a fraud case to, somehow, get oneself plopped right into that very same bin. “It can’t happen here” — nonsense, it already is! And how many people even care?

Not sure if it the same clip but have ya seen The National tonight? Can’t view yours with this device but there was a clip from the Toronto Ukraine gathering that had both the Right Sector Canada and incompetent Alexander as well. It might have been nice if the CBC reporter would have menrioed that the RS leader is wanted by Interpol since “she” must be aware that we have not only published this and specifically targeted CBCNews via tw*tter as well as via email and other social media tools with the details. This was just brought up on a comment thread via our web portal.
For those so inclined feel free to take a peek and plz feel free to add your few cents, (and maybe a few links to the Vineyard and supporting resources referenced here), since the CBC staff seems pretty interested in following the comments as we expose their shenanigans. Plz note that contributors are always welcome since we are rather busy putting together screengrabs and text summaries for our next onslaught against our national broadcaster related to the garbage AP pieces they are republishing, hoping they will straighten the coarse and represent our best interests as opposed to what suits the Harper Regime’s narrative…

“Mariupol is the natural place for the counter offensive because the militia will not get trapped and lines of logistics are by sea. The Russian navy and special forces can protect them easily.”
“Maybe Strelkov’s ghost is back in action?”
No doubt Strelkov is now helping to coordinate the ‘special ops’ behind Ukie lines. And certainly even the threat of an assault on Mariupol, including from the sea, will force the Ukies to garrison it and waste resources trying to hold that town. Porkyshenko and the junta will order a suicidal defense of Mariupol if necessary — Novorossiya winning access to the sea before the final peace settlement has to be avoided at all costs. This would be an order handed down from Washington, who doesn’t want the humiliation of Chinese or Iranian humanitarian cargos sailing into Mariupol’s port and being unloaded, not to mention future Chinese port calls if the ChiComs sail through the Bosporous? Ditto for aid from Venezuela or Argentina to Novorossiya delivered by ship!
Hey folks, I think it’s time for a contest! ;~)
We really need a better name for Our New Elites, the ones AGS calls Bolsheviks and Larchmonter calls the Cult of Liberalism and I think of as Neoliberal warmongering corporo-bankster fascist psychopaths. I sat on the porch swing and swung and swung and the only thing I could come up with is just too danged nasty (I really do like it but it really is too danged nasty). So how ’bout it? They’re running this country into the ground and killing people left and right damned near everywhere on the planet, and we have yet to come up with one name to refer to them by. With all the brainpower on this blog, it should be a piece of cake! ;~)
(Okay, we probably ought to agree first on who’s in this group: let me start with Neoliberals, Neocons, banksters, spooks, MIC types, corporatists (Koch brothers et. al.), various think tanksters, new academic elites… I’ve probably forgotten some so feel free to add on.)
They’ve taken over the place; they should have a name all their own, don’t you think?
I’ve recently become a big follower of this blog. Thanks, Saker.
I am very depressed and down about my country (the USA).
Just tonight, I was attacked by my own brother for a social media post that compared the rate of police shootings/killings in the USA to other nations. The statistic, of course, was astounding: 409 police killings last year, versus close to zero in some EU nations, etc.
My brother said,”Obnoxious comparison.”
He then told me to leave the country, and furthermore, that the fact that my student loans in are in Income Based Repayment hurts and angers people like “him” (rich people).
wow.
He’s a perfect replicant example of how most upper-middle class Americants think.
Our relationship recently took a turn for the way worse when we discussed the Gaza Massacre. He taunted my posts about dead Palestinian children, calling all Palestinians barbarians and terrorists, etc.
I won’t go into the useless attempt on my part to explain the history of the conflict.
My main point: I fear for my country. They are ready to go fascist. I am not kidding.
Slightly off topic, but I’m dealing with russians who religiously follow the former staff of Lenta on a facebook group called Лентач as I recall. These limp-wristed hipsters seem to post daily alarmist stories on possible/rumour-based maybe-soon-to-happen ‘travesties of Russian governance’ and the like. It definitely smells 5th column-y to me and I wonder if anyone can confirm that they have formal ties to/funding from the enemies of Russia. I understand Lenta was founded by Russian-Israeli Anton Nosik. Maybe they are just idiots who watched too many Mary Ringwald movies and believe that the American dream can and should be brought to Russia
Anonymous DumpHarper:
Yes, it was the same broadcast that you saw.
Somehow, the messsage has to get out that these are Nazis – the opposition parties hsould be all over this, with the Harper junta supporting and courting the Ukrainian neonazi vote.
It’s difficult to belive that the CBC, Canada, and the Conservatives have fallen to this level.
Still, they can be embarrassed by exposing them as Nazi lovers….the word Nazi still represents evil for most people in Canada.
Maybe people see how overthrowing Yanukovich made things worse, and fear the same for Poroshenko. Why would life in Central Ukraine get better if someone sabotaged the government? Would life get better if Moscow got to choose an oligarch instead of Washington?
You may be overly cautious in contemplating a military collapse for Kiev. A large part of their reserves are said to be from or in Kharkov and Odessa. They can’t rely on them. In fact, a big question is what would happen if the rebels broke through to Kharkov. My bet is Kharkov would fall quickly, and a lot of supplies would then be available for the rebels.
Also, we have seen how broken the Ukraine really is. Their military approach has been so terrible that minimal support from the Russian military and FSB may be more than enough to do the trick.

Situation in Donbass by August 24
Excerpts from link directly above:
Overall, the situation although remains difficult, but has a clear tendency for improvement, the militia is carrying out offensive action on a number of locations, while the junta offensive choked and stopped almost everywhere.
1. First, about the military action in the area of the shoreline…today fighting broke out in the area of Novoazovsk, where a powerful air defense hub was created since April and where an assorted soup made of various units of dubious combat readiness is stationed to cover the border with the Russian Federation…
Overall, what’s happening is not yet a decisive strike but simply a disturbing raid on the enemy rear, which ended up unpleasantly surprising to the junta…
3. Positional fighting continued today in the area of Saur-Mogila, Shakhtyorsk, and Torez…
The South Cauldron 2.0 is holding on for now, but the losses and the trophies there will be plentiful – the militia carry out attacks on Dyakovo, offering the same conditions to the current generation of the encircled ones that were offered to the previous generation of the encircled ones – leave into the Russian Federation and surrender materiel to the militia.
4. …Overall, today we can finally state that the offensive on Donetsk failed and there’s no direct threat for the city…
6. The assault on Luhansk failed…the militia carry out an offensive action against Lutugino and Schastye. The loss of which will mean a complete catastrophe for the junta military that besiege Luhansk, which will be cut in several pieces, although a part of them are already effectively in the state of the operational encirclement.
In the video I just posted, the silence during the ending credits is due to capitalist copyright issues. I had not realised this till after I posted the comment. In regards as to whether or not the Novorussians should be carrying out operations in west Ukraine I believe this would be a bad idea(with the exception of “special” military targets.) Any action like that could somewhat plausibly be construed as a “terrorist attack.” In fact I’m quite surprised that the Ukie’s haven’t staged any such false flags in the west yet given the growing public mood regarding all the young soldiers coming back in boxes.
Also for all the people of Ukraine, whether a child being held in her mothers arms, a volunteer fighting to defend his home, an elderly person on the street, or a soldier drafted against their will who have been killed all for yet another lie, all I can do from here is pray for your souls.
We must not forget who lit this fire.

Interesting video,
Consul General of the United States Otto Hans Van Maerssen delivers anti-Russian speech in Yekaterinburg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=yWDooUo0mHM
In his speech, the consul talks about the illegal seizure of Crimea by Russia, how the USA is taking care of peace in Ukraine, and how Russia is fueling the war.
The comments about the video, by Urals residents, do not sound surprised. Russian Maidan will start in Ekaterinburg.
The speech was sponsored by the plethora of American franchises such as Subway Sandwich shops, Hyatt Regency, Coca/Cola, Pepsico, and other proud Russian enterprises.
Who is in control in the Urals?
Russia has never been conquered from the West.
Only from the East…
The fifth column has a long tail.
Notice the look on the face of the Consul as the video fades at the end.
VP sure has a lot to worry about, or does he have a few more Surkovs up his sleeve?
The video is dubbed to Russian, there has to be the original in English, needs wide distribution.
hey Saker,
I came up with an interesting idea the other day. It’s a stretch, but in light of your recent article it’s worth considering. I won’t go on about it here at length because it’s a lengthy subject, but if you wanted to, I could probably provide more materials or even write a small article.
First, so few historical events like wars, uprisings and such which happen on a large scale are ever viewed in light of human health. And it is incorrect, in my opinion. Give me a population like the French who have traditionally eaten well because of their culture, and you have a population that’s quick to riot, protest and generally take to the streets.
Give me a population like Americans, whose over all nutrition is horrible, full of GMOs and other crap, and you get a much more passive, docile population, content to watch TV and Fox news, and hence, much more manipulable.
The point I am trying to make is that just like with an individual, whose ability to live vigorously is rather dependent on his or her health, same happens to populations. Of course, now with globalism you get imported foods, but with a largely poor population, the trends are usually much more straightforward and you can trace them pretty easily.
Consider Salem witch trials. There have been a couple of very interesting research theories which posited that these events occurred due to widespread fungal contamination of the grain people consumed. So they ate bread and hallucinated, and sometimes had convulsions and generally saw witches. So basically everyone got poisoned and everyone went crazy at the same time, not necessarily because people were evil over all.
Has anyone here heard of a condition ‘iodine deficiency’?
Well, I have found out that Ukraine is one of the places where this is particularly rampant in this part of the world.
Also, consider the Chernobyl disaster. For a population already low in iodine, this would have been even more terrible. And not just for adults at the time, but the children and teenagers, especially. It would have also further deteriorated this already existing condition in the population and also leached the ground/produce of iodine.
part two:
The most common known thing about iodine deficiency is that it affects the thyroid gland. But there are many others.
Particularly interesting are the psych effects: it can give rise to cretinism in children. This is an excerpt from a US med paper:
“Iodine deficiency in child is one of the factors that diminish his/her mental and intellectual development. The impact of the severity of iodine deficiency on both intellect and memory has been studied. It has been established that reproduction of verbal information diminishes and visual memory and other mental activity deteriorate in iodine deficiency. The number of accentuated personalities increases in the groups of children with decreased iodine levels. Self-overestimation occurs more frequently in these groups than that in a group of children with normal levels of this trace element. The manifestation of egocentrism and aggression increases in proportion with the more severity of iodine deficiency.”
It can also cause brain fog, depression, passivity and other mental disturbances.
And now look at this map at the link below. It’s a map of Ukraine which shows the areas badly affected by this condition: it’s the West Ukraine that is the worst.
http://thyro.info/v-ukraine-naschity-vaetsya-okolo-80-regionov-s-defitsitom-joda/
What’s interesting is that if you type ‘iodine deficiency’ into google in Russian, the next word that comes up for reference is ‘Ukraine’.
Consider, a population of people, already predisposed to being manipulated and brainwashed, with a few choice ‘leaders’ who are ready and willing to do so. People who are, by nature, unfortunately, the perfect fodder for such things. That would also perhaps explain why the Ukranian army is such a joke. Obviously they are underfunded and underfed and not taken care of or well trained, but this would also explain the low morale, the low energy, almost, when it comes to real fighting (not artillery shooting).
Fascinating, no? Very sad
This is an extraordinary article to read for someone from the ‘West’- (but could be East, South or North also I realise) only recently stumbling across your website…
We live, trying to envisage what is happening, trying to read between lines, trying to interpret the lies of the press, and then suddenly, there you are
and I am close to you. . . God speed your news to the world, God protect you and all people who speak and bring the truth of your country, standing for freedom.
Dear Saker,
Remember that when Poroshenko was elected president a few months ago, he promised to finish off the rebels within “days”. Well, months have gone by and Poroshenko has in effect discredited himself, as he is no closer to accomplishing his goal now than he was then.
The Empire is breaking its teeth trying to chew off Novorussia. And this was primarily an attack on Russia, and not on South East Ukraine. The Empire has produced the exact opposite of the end it desired in Russia, which was “regime change”. Instead Vladimir Putin and his government are more popular than ever and are firmly in charge of the situation, from Lugansk to the Chinese border.
The Neocon arsonists of the State department have clearly bungled this one, and it is thus not so surprising to see more realistic and sober members of the establishment like Mearsheimer offering a different assessment of the situation in Ukraine, and proposing options for a reasonable way out of this foreign policy disaster (yet one more!).
So, in my humble view, the Resistance in Novorussia has already accomplished much more than I thought possible at the beginning of the conflict, and they have earned the gratitude and the admiration of all Russian patriots and those who side
with Russia in her principled stand against the destructive and incoherent, not to say irrational, policies of the American Empire.
These resistance fighters are indeed worthy heirs to the Red Army fighters who broke the back and the spirit of the Nazi invaders seventy years ago.
All the best to you and your readers,

Of course, Fogh has his own reasons to escalate.
On 10 June, Volkskrant reported that the Dutch National Court of Auditors had determined that NATO couldn’t account for billions of dollars, and wanted November’s NATO Parliamentary Assembly in The Hague to start asking questions. Two versions of the same story are here and here.
A month later, a plane full of Dutch citizens, owned by a country which indicts US-UK-Israeli leaders of war crimes, was blown out of the sky, and Fogh started screaming his lungs out for war.
If you were an unprincipled PR grotesque like Fogh, which would you go for? Peace, and a leisurely scrutiny of your dodgy accounts, or War, where you can embezzle squillions more, and nobody will be ever the wiser?
