11th century fresco of the Resurrection, Chora Church, Constantinople |
Today is by far the biggest and most joyful day of the year for Orthodox Christians. This is also the day when Christians greet everybody, regardless of their faith or lack thereof with the words “Christ is Risen!”. The ancient tradition has many meanings, but one of them is the fact that Christ did not only resurrect for the pious believers, but for all of mankind and in His resurrection he “co-resurrected” all of humanity. I think that it is therefore only appropriate for me to also greet you all with this ancient greeting – Christ is Risen!
For those of you more theologically inclined, regardless of your religion or denominaton, I am posting an except from the first epistle of Saint Paul to the Corinthians which has a profound exposition of the importance of the resurrection of Christ for all of mankind.
I will “see” you all on Monday, kind regards and have a peaceful and joy-filled Holy Paskha,
The Saker
——-
Saint Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians (chapter 15 verses 12-58)
Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. For “He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,” it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all. Otherwise, what will they do who are baptized for the dead, if the dead do not rise at all? Why then are they baptized for the dead? And why do we stand in jeopardy every hour? I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. If, in the manner of men, I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantage is it to me? If the dead do not rise, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!” Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.” Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame. But someone will say, “How are the dead raised up? And with what body do they come?” Foolish one, what you sow is not made alive unless it dies. And what you sow, you do not sow that body that shall be, but mere grain—perhaps wheat or some other grain. But God gives it a body as He pleases, and to each seed its own body. All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, and another of birds. There are also celestial bodies and terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory. So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man. Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

The Whole Duty of Man
9. Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also taught the people knowledge; he pondered, searched out, and arranged many proverbs.
10. The Teacher searched to find delightful sayings and to record accurate words of truth.
11. The words of the wise are like goads, and the anthologies of the masters are like firmly embedded nails driven by a single Shepherd.
12. And by these, my son, be further warned: There is no end to the making of many books, and much study wearies the body.
13. When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: Fear God and keep His commandments, because this is the whole duty of man.
14. For God will bring every deed into judgment, along with every hidden thing, whether good or evil.
Thanks to Saker for pleasant reading and contribution, and all the best to all in Jesus Christ.

Personally, I find Mouravieff’s gnosis, holy grail stories and Celtic traditions intriguing. Certain modern day channellings are quite insightful as well. The bible contain metaphors and secret messages for those who find the patterns.

Your post was a wonderful surprise. Thank you very much. I too love Paul. For those who don’t I would like to place my hands on their head or shoulders. They would immediately learn the Spirit is very powerful. And this childish war mongering we are seeing is only a prelude to a wonderful transformation in Christ.

Hi Saker,
We’re in Seville for Holy Week, and the processions have been non stop since at leadt Wednesday. They carried the Virgin past our window last night, and as I write the drums are beating out another procession to the Cathedral a couple of blocks away. I’m no longer Christian, but I find it moving and important just the same.

Let God arise and let his enemies be scattered, and let those who hate him flee from before his face! (Ps. 67:2)
Christ is risen from the dead…

Christ is risen from the dead…
So let the wicked perish at the presence of God, but let the righteous ones rejoice. (Ps. 67:4)
Christ is risen from the dead…
This is the day the Lord had made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. (Ps. 117:24)
Christ is risen from the dead…
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.
Christ is risen from the dead…
It is the Day of Resurrection! Let us be radiant, O people! Pascha! The Lord’s Pascha! For Christ our God has brought us from death to life, and from earth unto heaven, as we sing triumphant hymns!
Christ is risen from the dead.
Let us purify our senses and we shall behold Christ, radiant with inaccessible light of the Resurrection, and shall hear Him saying clearly, “Rejoice!” As we sing the triumphant hymns!
Let heavens rejoice in a worthy manner, the earth be glad, and the whole world, visible and the invisible, keep the Feast. For Christ our eternal joy has risen!
The Angel cried to the Lady Full of Grace:
Rejoice, O Pure Virgin!
Again I say: Rejoice!
Your Son is risen from His three days in the tomb.
With Himself He has raised all the dead.
Rejoice, all ye people!
Shine, shine, O New Jerusalem,
The glory of the Lord has shone on you.
Exult now and be glad, O Zion,
Be radiant, O Pure God bearer,
In the Resurrection of your Son!
This is the Resurrection Day!
Let us be enlightened by this Feast and let us embrace one another!
Let us call “Brethren” even those who hate us, and in the Resurrection, forgive everything and let us sing: Christ is risen from the dead…
The Christ forgave even those who drove the nails into His hands and feet, the hammer wielding Thors! and their modern tattooed caricatures.

@I’m no longer Christian, but I find it moving and important just the same.
I would be extremely curious to know why, if you are no longer Christian (in other words you emphatically denied the divinity of the Christ and His Resurrection), you still find it moving and important? How do one like you manages the cognitive dissonance?
WizOz
@WizOz
I can fully empathise with the fact that one can be a non-believer but find the tradition/culture/imagery moving and important. I hold the same views and do not see any cognitive dissonance.
Easily explained: i might dislike classic cars but i like visiting events where i can see the enthusiasts dress in 1950s clothes to match their cars age.. and like.the whole jolly atmosphere. I like travelling and am fascinated by different cultures and history but i may not feel that it is something i would want to be part of, over the long run. I always make sure to visit churches, mosques, synagogues, temples on my travels as i feel these reflect the cultural life of the country i am visiting. I may feel that the catholic emphasis on the baroque is OTT, the vibrant beauty of the islamic mosques is well-matched with the sombre quiet nature of the people worshiping there, the synagogues are bland and uninspiring and i am puzzled how people can be seen loudly negotiating business deals in a corner……each visit fascinates and tells me something about the community around me. The orthodox christian world is for me, the “real deal”… the chanting, the aroma of incense, the glitter, the complex beauty of the decor…it does not mean that i believe in what is being done before me but i admire the culture, find it moving and if it is an important part of that culture, i respect the ‘presentation.’ and am happy to participate in the Epiphany. That is once a year in the East when i am with friends – but i can indulge in my own kind of Epiphany the year round each time i visit a spa which has a Turkish sauna next to a Finnish sauna…and after visiting the various places of worship, i can reflect on the spiritual values of the people i have visited all over the world and compare this with what it taught them about interacting with other people…
Happy Easter from Germany!
Thank you for your post and all commenters for their additional greetings! It’s very nice to read so many positive greetings and the rest of the net just doesn’t have any.

I certainly don’t have any belief in the Divine Pumpkin or anything else that smells of superstition. But I respect those who do, and yes, I find the communal aspect of common belief in something greater than one’s little narcissistic self moving. We have things in common; whether the beliefs refer to black holes or quarks or anything else we suppose to be of ultimate reality is of secondary importance. I don’t have any problem with other people’s religious beliefs, and I don’t try to force my own disbeliefs on them. It’s none of my or their business.
So, why don’t you keep them for yourself?

The Orthodox Church celebrates 12 major and 12 minor feasts, but Pascha is not among them. Pascha is the ultimate victory toward which all the others lead.
Today the cross is empty.
The Cappadocian fathers taught universal salvation, and the Orthodox believer “may legitimately hope for the salvation of all” which I do believe.
@I certainly don’t have any belief in the Divine Pumpkin or anything else that smells of superstition
But if you don’t have any belief why do you feel the urge to advertise the fact the you are no longer Christian? And what respect do you show for the Christians who “believe in the Divine Pumpkin”?
WizOz
@The Cappadocian fathers taught universal salvation
One should be very cautious about this question. Not all Cappadocian Fathers “taught” universal salvation. The only one that can be said to have spoken about it was St. Gregory of Nyssa, but his assertions have been rejected by the Church.
A good summary in http://orthodoxwiki.org/Apocatastasis:
St. Gregory of Nyssa accepted the idea of apocatastasis from Origen. However, this part of St. Gregory’s writings has been unequivocally rejected by the subsequent Church Fathers:
St. Varsanofios the Great, criticizing the doctrine of apocatastasis, when asked about St. Gregory’s opinion, has answered: “do not think that people, though also saints, could completely understand all depths of God… Even if a saint speaks about such opinions, you will not find that he confirmed the words as though had the statement from above, but that they resulted from the doctrine of his former teachers, and he, trusting their knowledge of them, did not inquire of God whether it was true.”
St. Herman of Constantinople has also expressed a negative opinion of the doctrine, but he supposes that the works of St. Gregory have been damaged by Origenists: “those who liked that absurd idea, as if for demons and for people who will be subjected to eternal punishment, is possible to expect the discontinuance… they have taken his clean and sensible works and have added the dark and disastrous poison of Origen’s nonsense.”
St. Mark of Ephesus, after citing St. Gregory, exclaims: “Are we wrong when we do not believe those words of St. Gregory of Nyssa, considering them forgeries, or, even if they are original, to not accept as contradictory to Scripture and to the general dogma?”citation needed
St. Maximus the Confessor, rejecting an Origenistic interpretation of apocatastasis, considered that St. Gregory used this term “in sense of restoration of cognitive forces of the man in that condition of the correct relation to truth.”
St. Photius the Great has expressed the Church’s general interpretation in one phrase: “that in works of St. Gregory, Bishop of Nyssa, where restoration is mentioned, it is not accepted by the Church”
The position of the Church is crystal clear:
“If anyone shall say that all reasonable beings will one day be united in one, when the hypostases as well as the numbers and the bodies shall have disappeared, and that the knowledge of the world to come will carry with it the ruin of the worlds, and the rejection of bodies as also the abolition of [all] names, and that there shall be finally an identity of the γνῶσις and of the hypostasis; moreover, that in this pretended apocatastasis, spirits only will continue to exist, as it was in the feigned pre-existence: let him be anathema”. (Fourteenth anathema against Origen, adopted at the Fifth Ecumenical Synod of 553)

Is it a cosmic coincidence that Orthodox Easter comes a week before Victory Day celebrations.
Χριστός Ανέστη!
This is perhaps not for everyone, but India’s Aum theory also describes the path from matter and consciousness (the universe and ego) to the realm of Eternal Awareness, the Redemption and the Awakening.
The creation expanse, in Aum theory, can be described using the three primal aspects of matter, consciousness, and Eternal Awareness, and these three primal aspects can be robed in the religious iconography of your choice!
Aum theory then explains the astonishing appearance of complex consciousness, ‘The Orchestra upon the Rock from Nothing’!

no gods no masters?
cognitive dissonance?
I, having graduate from a theological University, will give a more lethal blow to the christian – There is no historical evidence of Jesus…
But friends thats the mystery in it ALL!!! Think about it…
Are we matter only or non-matter envolope in matter? Whats the intended msg here? Really?
Put in quantum physics term, evoloped in Taoist Buddhist ‘wrapping’,
‘Christ is risen’ = ‘The matter return to Nothingness and from Nothingness it became matter.’ (TM to ME!!! Finally have the language to share here)
I felt v bad I failed to explain Nothingness to Hdan few yr ago here… I didnt have the language then…
but later I ‘woke’ and relieased its all around us… esp w OBE
Now, I distinguish between Jesus and Christ… Then there is the historical Jesus, historical Christ and spritual Christ – This is getting abit deep and theological discussion I wont go into it as its really a personal discovery journey and personal experience. Plus I promise da boss I stay clear of that…
But I have come to appreciate it more and more… Christ is Risen… is not so simple words or ritual no more…
Happy celebration of non-matter LIFE (eternal)
be well be safe
Happy Easter my fellow Orthodox and those well wishes!
Well wishes to the Saker and his family and all those celebrating this holy day as Christ Has Risen, Indeed He’s Risen!

No wait it was a month ago.
Today May 2nd is the Sunday after the Full Moon on 27th April.
But the Full Moon after the Spring Equinox was on 28th of March. So the Sunday after that was Easter.
i can’t see how using the old Julian Calendar is relevant here: the Equinox date is unequivocal so is the Full Moon following that.
JC was crucified on April 1 33 AD and that was a Full Moon/Eclipse day ie the Passover festival. Resurrrection was 2 days later Sunday 3rd April. That’s where the idea of ‘Sunday after the Full Moon after the Spring Equinox’ comes from as date for Easter Sunday.
This year the Jewish Passover date was 27th of March – there is no equivocation here. You can’t just stick the Crucifixion/resurrection date onto an inaccurate calendar (Julian)
Both the Julian and the Gregorian calendar are imperfect.
orthochristian.com/89363.html
The Julian one at least has the advantage of tradition of thousands of years.
Orthodox Easter (Pascha) is calculated as the first Sunday which occurs after the first full moon, after the vernal equinox, after the completion of Passover.
Passover completed the evening of Sun. Apr 4, 2021 (which was also Western Easter day, this year). The next full moon was Apr. 26, 2021. The Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal Equinox after the completion of Passover is therefore Sunday, May 2, 2021, which is Orthodox Pascha in A.D. 2021.
Western Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox — computing the date of Western Easter does not take the Passover dates into account. Therefore, Western Easter was Sun. Apr 4, 2021.
At least this is how the calculations of the dates of Western Easter as compared with Orthodox Easter (Pascha) was explained to me. As an aside, in the languages of traditional Orthodox lands (Russian, Serbian, Greek, etc.), the words for “Pascha” and “Passover” are exactly the same. So, from that angle, Pascha/Orthodox Easter could also be called the “Christian Passover.”
A universal Church council could obviously (conciliarly) decide to change the date of the calculation of Pascha, but thus far this has not occurred. A universal Church council has not taken place in a very long time. Some non-universal Church councils have non-conciliarly tried to “impose” calendar changes, but these calendar changes are not recognized by most Orthodox Christians. Upwards of 70-75% of the world’s Orthodox Christians remain on the “old style” or “Julian” calendar, and I believe that all of the non-Chalcedonian (or “Oriental Orthodox”) churches remain on the old-style calendar as well.
A minority of Orthodox Christians (mostly in the West) decided to switch to the “revised Julian Calendar” or “new calendar” during the 20th century, which more or less amounts to continuing to use the Julian Calendar for Paschal date calculations but using the Gregorian calendar for other fixed feasts. The “revised Julian Calendar” (RJC) creates a massive mess, however, since the Orthodox rhythm of fasting and feasting is totally messed up on the RJC. And saints days that were meant to be celebrated during Lent or during fasting periods end up not during fasting periods, etc., on the RJC.
At best, as it’s been explained to me, the primary reason that some Orthodox churches in West continue to use the RJC is because it is “easier to celebrate Christmas on the same calendar (and thus on the same day) as the West.” But as the West grows more and more post-Christian, this reasoning becomes increasingly irrelevant. On the Julian Calendar, which most of the Orthodox Church follows, Christmas obviously still occurs on Dec. 25, but the Julian Dec. 25 currently falls on Jan. 7th on the Gregorian calendar. Confusing…..
The accuracy or degree of “perfection” of whatever calendar over another is totally irrelevant. The dates of the Church’s Pascha calculation do not change until the Holy Spirit speaks through the Church, which would happen via a universal Church council. The Holy Spirit does not deign to let the Church be governed by a panel of “calendar experts” !
A wonderful Pascha to all — Christ is risen!!
