Since the West’s Great Lockdown started I’ve been warning the West that they can’t do it – a capitalist-imperialist system cannot do an immediate 180 and copy China, Iran, Vietnam and others. I gave so many reasons why that was a catastrophically bad idea:
The “sports-journalisation” of their media, the unbloody flag of Y2K, counting on Germany as “reliable partners”, the perilous idea that social media users should constitute a vanguard party, a corona response shaped by middle-class mediocrity would have been acceptable if there was any middle class left in the West, only Black Nationalists picked up on my phrase “the Great Segregation”, a gratuitous use of the word “Michigander”, a polite suggestion that widespread American matriarchy may promote the hysterical acceptance of any idea that springs to mind, the fact that if the Western 1% would collude to start World War One isn’t it possible they would conspire to create a Great Lockdown, and a couple dozen others.
I certainly persuaded myself the Great lockdown should end, at least!
However, it turns out I’m a really bad revolutionary: Instead of gleefully putting my boot heel on the forehead of the corona-felled West and calling for immediate and violent revolution I kept giving them ideas which were aimed to help them avoid pushing their society into Great Depression II-levels of joblessness, starvation and stagflation.
In essence I was yelling, “Stagflation is not some word that I made up! You should really reconsider trying to be like China overnight because there is no Mandarin for ‘Great Recession’!”
Listen to me… giving fair warning to the capitalist-imperialist enemy. What a softie I am! What a phony!
If there’s one thing the last 20 years of Western history has taught me it’s this – blaming Islam is always an acceptable explanation for mistakes: I have taken to heart too much that a Muslim’s duty is only to warn others (this is why Islam has no missionaries).
Well, it’s time for forcible conversion! Unveil the American Cultural Revolution!
Corona will unveil the American Cultural Revolution
Look: I was wrong – it’s all over for the West now.
It was over before it even started because capitalism-imperialism is no way to run a cultural bloc, but I gave enough fair warning in May 17: The date the Great Lockdown must end or Everything Bubble 2 pops.
The US, the leader of the West, has 43 million unemployed, which is undercounting, around 42% of whom aren’t going to be rehired for years, who already had lousy jobs which were underemployment and not full employment, which provided lousy and stagnant wages, which is hardest on a youth class who can no longer be distracted by taking pictures of and dissecting the different flavours of their avocado toasts because the avocados are all being dumped into a ravine to keep prices down by a farmer who is only a few months from suicide.
Hertz, JC Penny, Pier 1 many other top retailers and countless restaurants already have something in common with the lilies in the field described in Matthew 6:28 – Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not. Who can toil for not just bread but the credit card interest charged for that bread when bankruptcies of Biblical proportions have only just begun?
Bankruptcies lead to job loss; job loss leads to hunger and foreclosure; hunger and foreclosure leads to asking for government handouts; Anglo-American liberal economics’ refusal to give government handouts leads to endemic poverty and suffering; endemic poverty and suffering is proof that your favourite sociopolitical system sucks.
Stop pretending that the capitalists of any school have solutions to this – “letting capitalism run its course” via non-interventions is not just immoral and heartless but unpatriotic treachery: you prefer to maintain the fiction that your favourite sociopolitical system doesn’t suck rather than feeding your neighbor?! I am no promoter of “culture with American characteristics”, but at least I tried to warn them to avoid starvation, murder and chaos.
The US is, without the slightest exaggeration, now encountered with a fatal paradox: The only way to save “capitalism with US characteristics” is to immediately take public action to save it, but the actions required to save “capitalism with US characteristics” would destroy the system of “capitalism with US characteristics” beyond recognition.
The leftist opportunity provided by corona lockdowns – you’ll HAVE TO talk politics now
What we have now is a situation where people have the time to complete the single-most necessary task which precedes revolutionary change: talking seriously to each other about politics, and demanding the other person either admit to hard choices or get out of the way.
Since 1980 the hyperfinancialisation of the US economy enabled credit-based materialism on an incredible scale, and this mad scramble of work-buy-sleep-repeat has come to a temporary end – this is a great boon. This forced break is the greatest gift coronavirus is giving the US – it’s like a Ramadan they never had.
Let’s assume there’s a second wave, and a Great Lockdown II, or at least many other hysterical shutterings of auto plants and schools after one new corona case is found, and a real stop-and-start quality to life for the next 12 months or so. This should require more “People’s QE”, but it definitely means that Americans will be forced to often stay at home and really talk – via Zoom or the telephone or in person while being masked – about how outdated and aristocratically-rigged the Western liberal system is and how it needs to be changed, to modernise, to progress for the better.
Basically, the short- and medium-term conditions are spectacularly ripe for Cultural Revolution across the West.
There is no V-shaped recovery – they actually did this stupid thing I warned them not to – and you can reliably count on there being favourable conditions for fomenting leftist dissent until at least 2023.
Beyond the certainty of slow-drip economic disaster – corona is the pin which has popped the West’s Everything Bubble II economy – what’s so unique about this era is that we all have so much more time at home to stew about bad politics. So very many will be doing this without any stew, or only on barebones government-provided stew, but that is precisely what a Cultural Revolution is: stewing and arguing over what form our obviously-broken society must take from now on.
This is what happened in a China where revolutionary spirit was dwindling and mutating into a city-based elitism, as well as in an Iran which had declared non-allegiance to both the East and West despite having no modern Muslim political-cultural example to model themselves on.
Corona is doing what the Yellow Vests did – forcing open a space for honest political dialogue, finally
The simplest way to explain it is to put it in Western cultural terms: what France’s Yellow Vests are demanding is a French Cultural Revolution in order to expand democracy’s reach into the lower classes, something aristocratic Western liberal democracy has never achieved, nor even aimed to. – the parallel with 1960s China and 1980s Iran could not be more clear… if the West wasn’t so hell-bent on distorting those two eras, as well as distorting the Yellow Vests, too.
The Yellow Vests aren’t going to get revolution – such is the power of the modern aristocratic forces arrayed against them. Similarly, despite all the guns in private hands, the US is even less ripe for a modern revolution due to the 40 years of enforced political ignorance and political apathy that I described.
However, just as the Yellow Vests forced open a new space for honest political talk in France, the consequences of the Great Lockdown will create the space for honest political talk in the US.
The fall of the dollar, ‘Liberty or Boogaloo’, true cultural revolution – these things appear far-fetched to honestly expect (at least in late May 2020), but we can realistically expect that corona’s popping of Everything Bubble II will dramatically change the US political dialogue, like the Yellow Vests certainly did in France.
I have obviously reassessed my editorial line – no more warning, because the fight is over: the corona overreaction has knocked Western capitalism-imperialism to the canvas and it will remain floored for at least 2-3 years.
So if there was ever a time where an American could say openly, “You know, I’m not sure if those socialists ever had a single good idea, but I do know our system has definitely lost its way,” and not worry about being all alone in saying that – it is today and during the now-certain era of economic hardship.
“Our system has lost its way” is the ubiquitous, mantric phrase which always indicates the coming of revolution.
However, I’m certain that if Lenin was around in May 2020 he would do what he did between the twin revolutions of February and October 1917 – he would have forbidden the Bolshevik Party to take power because cultural conditions were not yet ripe. The capitalist-imperialist Americans (and French) are so very impressed with their own cultures that true revolution is not yet possible.
It’s fun and interesting to read a journalist write that revolutionary changes are on our doorstep already – I don’t think such journalists are personally familiar with revolution. We can’t even know just how bad it’s going to be until the West actually opens up, but after all this Great Lockdown we do know this: it’s going to be quite, quite bad for them.
Would Americans fiscally blow up America rather than go somewhat socialist for the benefit of their own 99%? This is more than just the topic for an upcoming column – it’s the question of the corona-crisis/Great Depression II era.
In whatever sense this means to you: corona is not going away. Its presence will be viscerally felt for the coming months and few years – now is the time, finally, when Americans will be receptive to the case made by true leftism.

Ramin Mazaheri is the chief correspondent in Paris for Press TV and has lived in France since 2009. He has been a daily newspaper reporter in the US, and has reported from Iran, Cuba, Egypt, Tunisia, South Korea and elsewhere. He is the author of the books ‘I’ll Ruin Everything You Are: Ending Western Propaganda on Red China’ and the NEW ‘Socialism’s Ignored Success: Iranian Islamic Socialism’.
Maybe. Or gulled into major warfare by a false flag attack even more spectacular and notorious than 9/11.
Bingo! Should be a really great show! Provided you’re not one of the victims, anyway.
USA’ll do a UK and send the kids back to school so their wage-slave parents can go back to lethally dangerous working conditions to make the oligarchs even richer than Trump’s tax cuts and trillion dollar handouts have already made them. They’ll die in their droves, and the ruling cliches will solemnly lie over their 40 year old port about the death stats, declaring anything remotely like true stats to be fake news.
Who cares if the proles die as long as they generate wealth for their masters? The internet won’t be a medium for significant honest discussion because as soon as anything on the main alternative media reaches a critical mass of relevant discussion it will be shut down. The revolution has been delayed for too long, and the proles are hopelessly divided and fragmented in their public discourse.
And I hope to God I’m completely wrong.
One would think the US could as least give itself a FDR type response but it can’t do it – it would violate the precepts of the dominate turbo capitalist neoliberal economic orthodoxy that has the US by its throat. US elites would rather destroy the entire country (or the world) than give it up. They don’t care about the people that are just a lot of road kill.
I actually wrote that a New Deal II is the logical outcome/goal of a US Cultural Revolution , but I took it out. Trying to make these shorter….
But I will probably write about it later – as it’s most useful to stay within the American context when discussing America, it seems impossible this idea won’t come up.
Whatever the USA will look like post-lockdown, it will have very little to do with whether or not COVID-19 is still around. That was just the pretext for a total reset of the world’s economy and the cover story for the draconian New World Order that will soon come into being. Sorry, Ramin, no chance of a populist revolution, at least not in your lifetime.
We’re talking about the second Industrial Revolution here, folks, where most workers will be replaced by automation and robots. The lumpen prolétariat will be as superfluous as pack animals in this new economy. The almost suicidal COVID-19 zombies, those who now flock to the beaches and bars in the midst of a lockdown, are maybe not aware of this, but they should be. They’re ultimately bound for extinction just like the dinosaurs. Heaven help us all.
The robotic-automation is inhuman. It is not meant to serve the vital interests of real humans, and it does not.
The same goes for the 5G technology. I know a lot of people, and no one that I know has a need to receive and transmit teraflops of data in real time. Real humans don’t need to do that to live their daily lives. Just do not.
But a vast, artificial intelligence that aspires to rule the planet might.
If the ultimate outcome is the extinction of humanity, then who or what is in reality the driving force behind the robotic-5G-computerized-“world-of-things”-automation?
Never fear, Sarah Conner is out there somewhere.
We are way past that point. The situation we face is far more insidious and threatening than the simplistic scenario in the Terminator movies.
Richard Sauder is someone who seems to appreciate the COVID nightmare, although we are only just at the beginning.
Ramin’s picture seems bleak, but is far too rosy. This is not going to be a few years of major hardship, then slowly limping back towards the world that we once knew. The COVID-19 crisis is meant to bring about massive and permanent changes. Envisage a brave new world where AI, mechanisation and control will be omnipresent. Most people will become redundant in every sense and there will be a major adjustment of population levels.
Next we will face a regime of testing, tracing, quarantining and the fear it causes with the official knock at the door. Testing will inevitably give way to vaccination, which will be the key step, as once the program is complete, humanity is past the point of no return. Agenda 2030 looks very much like it will be coming quite a few years early.
In the UK around 60 5G cell towers have been burned down. Maybe the English can teach their American brethren how to be revolutionary once more.
‘… those who now flock to the beaches and bars in the midst of a lockdown …’
Are the only hope we have against the Covid Rouge.
The ones flocking down to the beaches are actually the smartest ones. Sun, salt, iodine, fresh air with the right ionization, etc. will actually help their auto-immune system to overcome illnesses. That’s why the French government did forbid any access to the beaches.
There are few leftists in American . A lot of fake Leftists who beyond the Orwellian narrative are actually right wing. There is almost complete ignorance about economics, see Michael Hudson’s books. Can the Covid lies be debunked or will the New World order’s RFID chip and vaccine reduce everyone to drones? At any rate the Davos crowd look like they are destroying the West,. The us problems are multiplying rapidly.
And who or what is behind the Davos crowd? The Davos crowd are just the public face(s) of whatever or whoever is behind the curtain. They are the front men, the circus clowns to distract the global audience’s attention. Who or what actually owns and operates the circus clowns = Davos crowd?
@ Richard Sauder
Hi! I just enjoyed reading your comments to my wife. It was so much fun “reading between the lines” that hint at the much bigger picture that very few dare to address even indirectly, or even try to comprehend. Thanks!
It’s not something that the featured bloggers here even indirectly acknowledge, even though the evidence is blatant, global and in all of our faces, big time. The nation-state unit of analysis is less and less applicable to our predicament. We are facing something else, an over-arching meta-reality that is super-ordinate to nation-states. And it does not mean well.
There is no V-shaped recovery
I totally agree on this. I cannot believe how many people, allegedly including Democrats, think that this will be Trump’s secret weapon in Q3. There are so many things I don’t know but a ‘V’ shape recovery, will the hosts on FOX who are saying this finally lose their jobs when this does not happen because even their audience which craves happy talk will turn on them like the CNN audience lost faith in their prophets?
This is why their cannot be a ‘V’ shaped recovery. Let’s suppose we do everything correctly in reopening the economy and do not reinfect ourselves. Now let’s see what’s going to drive this new economic boom … I know consumer spending. Yeah, the first thing i am going to so is take the last of my savings and blow it on a trip to Disneyland, a big vacation, Las Vegas, you name it, I’m going to party, party, party … well maybe not. Actually I’m going to dig a few holes in my yard to see where I can hide a few tin cans of cash.
Sorry to get emotional but I just can’t stand the smug look on the faces of these hosts. Don’t they realize that people who experience real trauma tend to change their behavior or do they really think that a Captital Gains tax cut solves everything. Well if you got a nice job where you just have to show up on TV, wear a suite and say, we are great, China’s bad, and you always keep your job then the world always looks great to you.
(BTW is drinking your own urine actually a thing, I mean if I can’t pay the water bill ….)
Yes its a thing, we had a coal mine disaster, Westray mine, where that what the poor fellows had to do to survive.
Id collect rain watee in barrels first, lets be proactive a little here dude!
Cheers!
Pictou County has some of the sweetest ground water found anywhere in Canada, drank it for years. I’d pass on the rain water unless you are distilling it to get the acids out.
Cheers, M
The Germans had wheel barrows of ‘cash’ and couldn’t buy a loaf of bread after WW2. Not sure what burying cash will do, unless it’s a presious metal………………which might get one killed faster than they could spend it.
Cheers, M
Well, urine is sterile, fortunately.
But as for digging a hole in your garden to hide your money…..
Better you dig some decent holes and grow food….. the distribution network is very shaky in North America. Here in Canada many people are now doing that. I do a lot of gardening every year, and this year I have to wait 3 weeks for a delivery of topsoil, and many seeds are sold out. As long as you have enough to eat, you and your family can ride out this time.
Great article, as expected from Ramin. Two things I’d like to comment, first, it has always amused me that many Americans defend their right to carry guns as if it was sacred, yet most of those people have zero clue as to why and what to do with them, guess they look nice to have on display. The Westerners and specially Americans are too proud and indoctrinated to believe in their superiority and exceptionalism, that is until they become exceptionally impoverished and hungry.
Which brings me to no. 2, Chilean authorities have recently declared in Santiago that “scarcity does not justify the protests” that are currently taking place in there, in spite of the Covid crisis. I hope this is just the beginning of many more to come.
Yes, indeed, for those who can read Spanish here is a link to an article about the protests
in Ecuador yesterday.
https://www.elcomercio.com/actualidad/protestas-medidas-gobierno-ecuador-coronavirus.html
Among the many grievances are an end to some fuel subsidies, $300 million cut from public education budgets, massive unemployment, frustration with the looooong Coronavirus lockdown, rampant government criminal corruption, including in the government/public hospitals, and much more.
I fully expect more protests in Ecuador, larger, longer and much more intense. The people have had their fill of “official” incompetence, organized criminal corruption, lies and exploitation.
June and July could be very combustible in Ecuador.
For those who don’t live in the US, it’s hard to comprehend just how completely brainwashed its people are, as we’ve been indoctrinated since grade school in how we live in the freest and best economic system in the world, and if you are not a winner it’s because you’re a loser and deserves their fate. That you should be able to take care of yourself without any help, that community funding of anything but the police and fire department is socialism, and socialism has never worked but to enslave and kill people, because look what happened to the USSR.
For proof, we just have to see what is happening right now across this country, where instead of realizing that our system has utterly failed to protect its citizens from this virus, and are forcing people to choose between getting infected or go broke and hungry, what do we see?
Large numbers of us are insisting that it’s a conspiracy to entrap them, that freedom demands they ignore the dangers, that it’s ok if this is killing mostly old people and minorities and those in prison or in big (liberal) cities, and that we should hoard food, buy a generator, protect yourself with guns, and don’t trust anyone.
Does this sound like a country that is on the verge of revolution? Certainly not one from the left.
No, what’s going to happen is more of the same: more and more people will fall from the so-called “middle class” into poverty, and they will be ignored, as those already there are now. The stock market is already almost recovered, and the high-tech and creative type workers get to work more from home now, so everything is fine for them.
There will be no revolution.
”There is almost complete ignorance about economics,” How true and how tragic. just think of all the great theorists: Schumpeter, Veblen, Marx, Kalecki, Keynes, Polanyi, Von Mises …. the list goes on and on, but of course these oustanding theorists represent the great unread. In a know-nothing world there is no future, the masses have been narcotized and the leadership is utterly corrupt. It’s not that there are also some quite clever, insightful and writers and philosophers, but they and their works are simply not read or referenced. Again the world is full of literary traditions: In England, France, the US, Russia, Germany, Spain, Japan, Latin America, these are the critical consciousness of society, but they make little impact on a society which is preoccupied with the Kardashians. The reckoning is in siight, we will pay the price.
>Well, it’s time for forcible conversion! Unveil the American Cultural Revolution!
Forced conversions don’t create true believers, but only those who perform an outward show so they are not harassed. From what I am seeing, there will be no revolution. To be blunt, many Americans are stuck on stupid. They are still polarized between those who despise Trump and those who think he is a genius and is taking systematic steps to bring down the deep state. They can’t face themselves, their failures and wrong thinking. They can easily be moved to blame another who is not to blame. It is China’s fault. It’s the communist Democrats. They can’t even see the prison being built around them through a bipartisan effort. A system far worse than mere Feudalism is in the future. I read somebody’s post on social media last night. It mentioned a number of very unsavory qualities and conduct which was meant to describe the Democratic party. I had to comment on this because the person had just clearly described how U.S. foreign policy and diplomacy work. I didn’t bother reading the reply, which I’m certain was not pleasant.
Very intriguing article and, as ignorant as I am, I suspect mostly true. It is evident that corruption at every level in our society has brought us to this point. My conviction is that we only have one political party in the US, authoritarian, with possibly a faction or two. Whatever emerges from the ashes will certainly be Totalitarian.
After nearly 80 years of traveling the world I suspect that the “Americans” are the most ignorant and poorly educated people of this world. No Sir – there will be no revolution in this place unless you would classify a stampede for free food as revolution.
This is a rousing call to Americans to act and I applaud it. However I am convinced it is moot from the get go. The reason? There is no real leftist movement in this country. Can you name any segment of the population from which this movement can arise? I can’t. The Unions? Come on now! I spent 20 years as a union rep trying to break them free from control of the Democratic Party and act as an independent entity. All you get is frustrated, reviled and marginalized and finally sick. The only good thing that came out of that I was able to help found a Labor Party thinking people would rally around it and move the country left. The Democrats threatened it harshly and scared people from using it. It sits there online (at least it did) moribund having run one candidate for office in the Carolinas who lost. Kaboom! End of story. Most union members cling desperately to the Dem Party even as their power wanes. And that Party has significant power to screw those who stray.
Mr. Ramin, your articles and those of Saker, Michael Hudson, all writers on Information Clearing House and myriad others move and touch me to act every day. But no matter how hard one tries to convince others you can’t crack through the propagandized sculls of most Americans.
I will say the one group of people I had the most success with at the basij level was African Americans. They are really ready to rumble if the right leadership comes along. There may be no other group on the planet who knows for a hard fact that they are being and have been royalty screwed by imperialist ruling classes. They also have a very good bullshit detector which is why they distrust “left” movements.
Yours is a great article but I won’t wait up nights looking for people to arise. I think the people of this country have cooked their own goose with fear and apathy and now await their fate unwilling to act.
Make no mistake there are going to be rebellions but they will be narrowly focused and will probably do more harm than good with no plans to take meaningful power. We saw people start to act on Memorial Day with the one thing they know right now, defiance of authority and it actually made some leaders start crying which means they are scared. At least those with some sort of humanity left.
Good luck with your rebellion. As Danny Glover once said “I’m gettin’ to old for this shit”
I’m afraid you’re wrong about most black culture and leadership here, it is also wedded to the demos as well: just look what happened with Biden.
“Similarly, despite all the guns in private hands, the US is even less ripe for a modern revolution due to the 40 years of enforced political ignorance and political apathy that I described.”
It isn’t that people in other parts of the world are incorruptible, but the Pindos are so greedy, reactionary, and backwards that they go ape-shit at the prospect of gargantuan lawsuits against all and sundry, amusingly including their “fellow” compatriots too. Now, to have a social revolution from below, people need to soberly assess their rulers’ degree of ineptitude, rottenness, and the alignment of class forces at home and abroad. Way beyond Pindo mental faculties. But, of course, the Pindos are fabulously dexterous with their private firearms and, ahem, incredibly “well-versed” about their Constitution, LOL.
Yes there is a revolution in the making, and whats most intriguing , is that one does not no were the rabbit is going to pop.
“I have obviously reassessed my editorial line – no more warning, because the fight is over: the corona overreaction has knocked Western capitalism-imperialism to the canvas and it will remain floored for at least 2-3 years”
For me, the difference between Covid19 and AIDS is in Scale but pattern is same , albeit with slight adjustments here & there. I anticipate a controlled demolition (a.k.a 911), instead of an “overreaction”. Isn’t the so called “social distancing” tantamount to denial of human to human contact, reminiscent of condom use in terms of aids, which destroyed intimacy & meaning in sex.
To top it, even Antony Fauci (the veteran aids “warrior”) is back doing what he knows best. Time will tell, all we can do is to be vigilant
The left that I know supports the ‘lock-down’, the right who tend to work, have biz, and understand economics, are opposed to the lock-down.
So let’s get this right, the people who have destroyed the US-Economy say in Oregon & Washington where Liberals Governors have completely destroyed restaurants and bars, these people are going to bring exactly what? More of the same? More lockdowns?
The left has failed, because the left was always ‘false’ given that FDR was a ‘rich guy’ from a rich family, he pushed the ‘left’ narrative, but made sure his people stayed in power.
The ‘right’ the so called reactionary’s, are more closely aligned with Muslims & Orthodox Russians;
But this site continues to push the narrative that the ‘left’ will save you, yet its the left that brought you Hollywood, and has completely destroyed the USA family. The left ‘democrat’ party are poverty-pimps, they only have one game ‘free stuff’, the entire world has paid by endless wars.
Hey get a life, the left is kaput.
”But this site continues to push the narrative that the ‘left’ will save you, yet its the left that brought you Hollywood, and has completely destroyed the USA family. The left ‘democrat’ party are poverty-pimps, they only have one game ‘free stuff’, the entire world has paid by endless wars.”
To a certain degree, the material by some of The Saker’s contributors — Ramin Mazaheri, Pepe Escobar — does make use of leftist jargon, but not for the sake of promoting fairy-tales about ’the left’. The Saker’s focus overall is on Russia and the Empire’s war on her. I agree with you that the left — in the West — has degenerated to infantile zombies, totally possessed by Hollywood, sexual aberrations, Russophobia, and ’free stuff’ at the expense of the Third World.
”The ‘right’ the so called reactionary’s, are more closely aligned with Muslims & Orthodox Russians”
There is a grain of truth in that as well, but the fact of the matter is that the Left/Right ’divide’ has never been decisive except as part of the West’s self-promotion and deceit. The real divide is between oppressed and oppressor nations. I feel inclined to say that the term ’reactionary’ applies to people anywhere who side with imperialism, ’left’ or ’right’ regardless.
The real divide and struggle is Nationalists vs Globalists.
The left vs right paradigm is a distraction, a mirage.
